Nostalgic for imperial glory? Or boldly reaching for a cosmopolitan future? What a nation chooses to wear at the Olympics says a lot about its people.

blacks of all socio-economic levels have appropriated polos, plaid and all things prep to celebrate and enhance their culture, specifically hip hop and rap music. perhaps the author is revealing his own racism by implying that black people who wear Ralph Lauren's designs are ignorant of the clothing's inherent white supremacist, culturally elitist messages. it must be his duty to enlighten them.

I can not believe the reactions this article has provoked! These people are angry - but i somehow think that they've missed the point - and misdirected their anger.

As a Womenswear Designer who has a deep love of history and politics, i constantly relate fashion and that form of self expression to 'the bigger picture' - the events going on in the world around us have the ability to make massive impacts on our lifestyles, therefore somewhat dictating our tastes and behaviours. It is fascinating how you can really gauge the mood of a people/nation by looking at what they choose to wear.

Some of us think about style and dress more than others - some of us being more comfortable with using our bodies as vehicles of self-expression - but a vast majority of us choose 'not to bother'. Little do they know that by making that choice, they have already thought about what they are wearing more than they would like to admit.

If each country/nation competing in the Olympics had paraded a work of art around the Bird's Nest Arena in the place of their kitted-out teams, and Mr Reddy had then written a similar article analysing the self-expression of each nation through that work, I doubt very much it would have garnered such a violent response.

I think that people are quick to judge Mr R's opinions and studies as 'frivolous' and 'pointless' because they don't consider fashion as a worthwhile or important form of expression. But it is - more so than any other form, because we don't all paint pictures and write poems everyday - but we do all have to get dressed (for the most part!)

I would encourage those who have taken the time to write such damning responses to take their own advice, and seek counsel with a therapist for their anger issues. Clearly this article is being used as a scapegoat.

What's really scary is that this retard's view is so freely accepted by the main stream media, so much so that it's printed in a majoy U.S. "news" magazine. Can you imagine David Duke writing something about blacks are monkeys and it being printed in....well, Newsweek? People, wake up, this liberal country is about to elect an affirmative action president who hates whites as much as this retard.

    What a bunch of fluff!!

This is hilarious!! These leftists rally against American influence and affluence but the fact is they would not exist without these things. It is only in stable, wealthy societies that young people have the time to sit around in coffee houses and contemplate the meaning of it all (while their rich parents pay the bills) and grow up to become academics who generate nothing but ideas. Don't get me wrong, we need thinkers and ideas, but life in a poverty stricken, war torn nation does not lend itself to their creation. While these leftists root for the destruction of America, have they given any thought to the alternative? No, because the naivete' afforded them by their stable, wealthy society ensures thay have never experienced real hardship!

What a sad little piece of pathetic foolishness! Please get some help with your self-esteem issues, Mr. Reddy.

    Hey Sam,

What you need is a long session on the therapists couch.

    Gee Sam,

Looks like a lot of folks think the way you do........in the institution.

I'd say get back to reading as apposed to writing as these posts so eloquently illustrate even if they are the institutions comic books.

Don???t give up your day therapy or you may wind up in your own little recession if not already.

So if the Russians do try to expand their empire again, returning the peoples of Georgia, Poland, Latvia, etc to bondage and oppression, will you whine at those mean old WASPs (a la Darfur) or will you simply shrug your prissy well-dressed shoulders and say "oh well, suchs to be you"? Will you whimper like a puppy as you pay more for gas at the pump, or do you believe that everyone who uses gasoline (except yourself) deserves to be punished? How can any thinking person take you seriously, or the cage liner that publishes this tripe?

Good Comedy, I would have thought this was an article from The Onion had I not actually read it on this site. At least from the line above "Newsweek Web Exclusive" we can see that even Newsweek has deemed it too stupid to waste paper on.

Good Comedy, this should have been published in The Onion.

Sounds like a article pulled from the fashion section of Pravda, or the Evil West Times.....I can't believe this leftist actually got something printed outside of MoveOn. Reddy, why don't you move on to Dog Fancy or doing press releases for Pelosi, or something...........

You really need to find a hobby. Are people paying you to come up with this crap? I've found that people who think the way you do somehow resent their own upbringing or income level, and therefore have to disparage it. Really, get over yourself.
