I am an editorial writer myself and was struck soundly on the funny bone with every word I read. I got a few sideways glances in the waiting room at the doctor's office reading this article and laughing heartily. My favorite parts were the ones I could relate to myself. Those groups of people who love to tell you how wrong you are and proceed to do so in an English/Not-So-English hybrid. I like to refer to those comments as "vindicators."

I love your articles!! They must be read with a sense of humor though... which sadly, the American population is lacking. =D Your articles definitely made my day!! =D

Oh for crying out loud. Both articles were hilarious. People need to stop taking things (and themselves) so seriously. Lighten up. It's called a sense of humor. Get one.

I am the person who responded with the "Obama supporting" regarding the ending of the article stating Yes!We!Can! . This was not about you as an individual supporting Obama, but the use of Obama's media style campaign to turn a new group of -used to be watching sports and chatting on my space- to a new group of people that read and watch the news, because of their newfound interest in politics due to the Obama campaign, and his rockstar face on posters and shirts to promote this frenzy. This new group of readers for Newsweek also happens to be the market demographic, and I have seen Newsweek and other news organizations change to cater to this new group of viewers that advertisers are paying big bucks for. Newsweek is now purely about making money from those advertisers, and an article making fun of something caters to the same groups that would do just that. Making fun of people eases the intimidation these people might get from an actual news magazine, and brings these readers in that the advertisers want. You are lowering the standard of your magazine to attract this marketable crowd. My feedback was clear about this, but good way to spin it. And truly, the reason people were upset, was because you were not just giving your opinion on the shoes, but actually laughing at people in public and encouraging your son to do the same. It is hard to understand why a writer for Newsweek would be so un-enlightened to act in this manner. We become dependent on Newsweek to be one that will give us an actual straight story, then we find a writer perceives the world and people in such a manner. Very disappointing! I think people were frustrated by that, rather than the opinion of a show style. Really over the top and gross, this is why you received so much feedback. Corporate advertising in a consumer society...it's the new oil, the new corruption.

I know I'm late in reading and posting to this, but I don't get to read Newsweek in a timely manner. Usually in the waiting room of a plasma donation center.
After reading this, I had to go back and read the original essay. To sum it all up... "ROFLMAO". Seriously... I fell out of my chair. Newsweek is getting the bill for my hip replacement. :-)
I could rant on, but I have limited space.

I like how people angrily rebut the assertion that they're dorks by writing vacuous, irrational, and ineffectual diatribes about how wrong it is to hate a pair of kitschy shoes. Irony, for the win!

    You are my new HERO!
i actually laugh out loud when i was reading your article.
I found it funny how americans were so outraged by your
previous article. The thought that there is people out
there actually wasting their time getting mad at you
for writing that article and expressing yourself just
made my day. Those people just need to start worrying
about some real issues instead of silly ones like this one.
    Keep it up!

Thank you, and again, thank you.

I wanted to shove a pipe into my butt every time I see someone wearing them.
To distract the pain...Again, Thank you.

Hilarious. I first read the article and laughed, sharing it with my husband who had recently bought a pair of crocs, against my better judgement. I told him he was not allowed to leave the backyard with them on and then joined a group on Facebook called: "I don't care how comfortable they are, you still look like a dumb$%^." The essay couldn't have come at a better time! THEN to see the response, was classic. People in crocs look lame. I think they are OK for kids under 2, just because they can put them on easily by themselves.
I loved the part in the response about Mr. Tuttle being called un-American and him pointing out the fact that they are all made in other countries. Hilarious and please keep it coming: the croc hate and the witty articles, breaking up the election overload.

I have to admit that when I read the original story, I didn't find it that funny. I thought it was a little out of place in Newsweek and thought mocking other people with your child was not setting the best example.

However, this response is one of the funniest things I've read in a while. I read it over breakfast and nearly blew my cornflakes through my nose.

I think this story and the responses say a lot about human nature. I think the reactions definitely say more about the individuals writing than they do about the author. The same is true for Mr. Tuttle. What he says about others is really a reflection of him.

At any rate, this was very enjoyable. So Thanks.

ah ha ha ha! i think you're awesome! regardless of my love of crocs! i appreciate good humor and what's the big issue here... while i love crocs... i think that they're ugly and make your feet smell... now they have the ballet flats and the little shoes that look like real shoes, and i love walking on what feels like marshmellows especially when i stand for 5-6 hours at a time.... ppl need to lay off their stupid b.s. when did it become wrong to express your opinion?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for speaking out against crocs. I have been known to tell wearers to their face that crocs and uggs are the ugliest shoes on earth and they should never be worn, under any circumstances. I laughed so hard I was crying. You made my week.

I laughed out loud reading this article. I don't remember being as amused by the original crocs article, but I do plan to revisit it. I don't own crocs but have been thinking about trying them out. I'll admit, your original article did give me pause. Thanks for my morning laugh.

I love this piece and the one preceding it! Thank you for a witty essay that I'm looking forward to sharing with my students. Just another reason why learning how to write properly is essential. Who would want to be on the receiving end of such jabs? Bad enough when your English teacher pulls your writing apart and uses your piece anonymously as the "don't do this example", but to be such an example in a national publication? Oh, the shame!

Nothing makes me take a brighter outlook on the world than a witty peice of satire, spiked with a couple of long-deserved stabs at the mechanics of online posting. Alright, now that I've dubbed myself the high school loser, I must say- I haven't laughed like this in a long time. Thank you Steve Tuttle, for helping me survive the beginnings of my junior year at high school, and for having either the courage or the indifference to speak out. When newsweek (enjoy it as much as I do) is filled front to back with head-spinning politics, it's very refreshing to have a good peice of satire to relax with. I hope you shall be here to help me survive college, if not, I think I'll go subscribe to Time. haha...

The response to the responses to the article on crocs was even more hilarious than the original article. I'm surfing the net for more articles. Hey Tuttle -- they better be good!
