My grandkids love Crocs, and at 1 1/2 and 4, they looks cute in the neon clown shoes. I am not so sure about my contemporaries...well, actually I am sure. They look terrible. The end. Steve Tuttle's original made me chuckle heartily, and his second commentary...even better. Such a beautifully mean spirit! I don't want to marry you Mr. Tuttle; my husband is a delightful man--who does not wear Crocs--but I do want to read more of your commentary. Your are both tasteful and a hoot!

My kids love Crocs and I did love Crocs but they hurt my feet. I loved both of your essays. Humor wrinting is a gift and you have that gift. As for the people who you insulted who went to buy more crocs- Boy did they show you, huh? People get upset about the silliest things. I'm sure they are the same people who say the following to me when they see me with my two biological sons and my Korean daughter. "She'll be very smart you know" I always reply that "Yes she is smart and my two Irish American sons are idiots" Maybe it's because they wear Crocs. Thanks for the laughs. Peace, Mollye

Aw man, everybody. Don't be so serious, so defensive. This guy is writing to entertain, not speak in absolutes or insult entire fields of professions. Mr. Tuttle, you're great. Crocs are pretty goddamn awful, in my opinion. But that's what's so great about people... everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, and in the United States you are able to make your opinion known.

It may interest some of you that those of us working in the Nursing and CNA fields are usually encouraged to wear Crocs because they are easly cleaned because no fabric is used to make them, Bacteria and viruses living on the surface of crocs are easly sanitized. Since the CDC states there will be a pandemic in the near future, Probably starting in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted care facilities. I would be happy to see health care workers taking care of me wearing these. And why the heck arn't you making comments about those stupid looking baggy pants hanging down arount everyones knees???

All those who were offended by his first article seem to have lost their sense of humor. In today's world of turmoil and strife, if a man can't write a humorous article about some ugly shoes, then we as educated and literate people have more to worry about than being offended. I understand that certain professions, such as nurses and doctors, as well as people who find them comforting due to medical necessity should not be offended by the remarks as they were not directed towards you. For people who find them useful for running errand, grab some flip flops and learn to laugh again.

I think that all who are outraged by his article are taking life too seriously. With all the trauma and turmoil, if one can't knock on some ugly (and maybe comfortable) shoes, we, as an educated, literate people, have lost our sense of humor. If you are offended, look at your feet and honestly tell me that they are a stand-up fashion statement. For nurses or others who need them to ease medical issues, I have no complaint. But for everyday activities, at least get some flip flops for strolling around town.

While I agree Crocs are homely looking and are out of place in many social situations....I think there are probably a few people with aging arthritic feet that are glad they exist. Me, I stick to my Dansko sandals and clogs.

Yes, please DO write (negatively, of course) about people talking in public on cell phones! I've been fuming about that for years!!!

I posted a comment here earlier and I can't believe how many responses have arrived since! One of the main themes I have seen (aside from the hatred of crocs) is the blatant mis-spelling and mis-use of the English language. Really? could you ACTUALLY care less? or is it that you could not care ANY less? hmm... which is it, I wonder. Some of these comments are hilarious, while others are just a sad commentary on the state of the nation as far as being able to correctly speak and spell the primary language of this country.
It is like watching a car accident (unfortunately), even tho I am disgusted by the language and the spelling, I cannot stop reading!

Ok so I'm not for or against Crocs, but when my friend started explaining this article to me I wondered...who would possibly be lame enough to write about hating shoes and what gives them the right to say anything....ok so then she sends this to me. I nearly pee'ed my pants (and that could be really embarrassing seeing that I am "working" right now). I honestly could care less about what this man thinks about Crocs....he's a comical genius in my book. what are you doing working here? Be a comedy writer or something. No that???s a lie....stay here to entertain me. If your other marriage proposals don't work out....look me up! I'm engaged....but I think my fiancé wouldn't mind if I got a hobby!

    Keep up the great work!

Mmmmm....now I'm hungry for rasins! lol!

One thing I see as a main theme (aside from the hatred of crocs) is the blatant mis-spelling and mis- use of the English language. Maybe that could be a future subject. Really? could you actually care less? or is it that you could NOT care any less? hmm.... which is it? Some of these comments are hilarious, but some of them show the truly sad state that we, as a country are in, when we can't handle the basics of the primary language of this nation.

I read this response/follow-up article without looking at the original, but I think I can assume how the rant went. It's one that's championed by many in our country and has the facebook groups to testify to it. But I laughed quite a lot reading this and thoroughly enjoyed it, though I had no plans to read the actual article until I reached the last couple of sentences, so thanks for including that quote.
P.S. I also hate crocs, consider them ugly, and have gone on a couple of short rants over their less admirable qualities... but I'll admit that I've also had the paradoxical desire to buy a pair for my summer job. In the end I couldn't allow myself to be one of the many who've bought into them, but it is rather embarrassing that I actually considered it at one point. :) Thanks again for the laughs!

I agree with this wonderful writer. Crocs are just not okay to wear in public... or ever. It's like people don't even care how they look anymore. Crocs might feel comfortable to you, but what about all the people who have to see you in them? For God's sake, please think of others for a moment.

  • Posted By: Erin S @ 08/24/2008 6:27:55 PM

I am so glad that someone has finally said it: Crocs are THE ugliest thing to have ever hit the United States. It's like people don't even care how they look anymore. Just because they are comfortable does not mean that they should be seen in public. Crocs might make you feel good, but what about all the people who have to see you in them?
