I am a Viet Nam Vet. My sons are and have served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Korea. I am tired of people confusing patriotism for political blunders. The Bush/Cheney regime know that Americans would do that. They were banking on it as the scammed this great nation out of billions in contract on the blood of our brave fighting forces. WAKE UP! We need people at the helm who are not beholden to the money mill called Washington, DC. John McCain's war record is no more honorable or notable than the thousands of fighting men and women whose live are lost because of the lies concerning Iraq's intentions and capacity to threated the United States.

No one person can change everything in a nation as diverse and complex as ours, but at least we are sincerely being offered a seat at the table. A table that regular Americans have been banned from for eight years. So John McCain and his so-called "straight talk express" can rush itself out of my face. I have heard enough about who has inherited the "right" to be president because of some limited and convenient interpretation of patriotism. Let's, in this land of oppotunity, give Obama and opportunity to offer a more inclusive, open, globally savvy and peace leaning government. After 8 years, anybody trumpeting the Bush plan has got to be on some really bad drugs, Like Oxicoton [sic]. Are we going to let racial bias, party blinders and fear of change stop us from having any kind of a shift toward progress in this country?

Forget about the John Wayne images that McCain rhetoric evoke. That was a time when we were told that Native Americans were blood thirsty savages, blacks were only good to shine our shoes and woman were only show pieces for a man's lust. Who's still there?

Picking Biden proves the point the Obama needs all the help he can get. I am no fan of McCain, but Obama needs to gain experience on his own, not use the knowledge base of a VP. I wish him luck but I believe it's goint to backfire on the Democrats.

    Sealteamo,

Thanks for you post at 11:59.

I hope more and more vets, especially from Vietnam, speak out to expose McCain for the fraud that he is.

I respect that McCain showed integrity when he was a POW..but the fact is that he would never have been a POW if his father and grandfather hadn't both been admirals because no one with his grades would have gotten into the US Naval Academy much less graduated at the very bottom of the class and still got into flight training.

What you said was especially profound because McCain clocked a total of 20 hours of combat flight time up to and including the flight were he was shot down. He was awarded 28 medals for his service. That adds up to about 1 1/2 medals for every hour of time he actually spent in combat.

Then there are people like you and my brother who spent months and even years on the ground in conditions that were just, if not more hellish, than the Hanoi Hilton...who probably have little more than their veterans health benefits as a reward for their sacrifices.

Anyone who has been a veterans hospital knows how understaffed and underfunded they are, .especially now that Bush had caused tens of thousands more casualties who will need some type of care for their entire lives.

And McCain hasn't been the champion of vets that most people would expect of someone who wears his POW status on his sleeve.

McCain is another Bush..he's skated through life on the connections, handouts and favors of others. He's never had to go out and really earn his own way in the world.

It's time to elect some people who have shown that they know how to work to get what they want.

    • Posted By: Jebber @ 08/23/2008 12:43:47 PM

With regard to your criticisms of Senator McCain's war record, you are a jerk. He served and suffered for our country. Your facts are incorrect - you have believed lies. More importantly, I suppose your guy is Barack Obama - someone who "earned his own way in the world"? - someone who "knows how to work to get what they want"? Yep, a guy who took advantage of affirmative action to get into a top law school. A guy who was an activitist who befriended crooks (and got his mansion from one who is now in jail), radicals (who once planted bombs in the Capitol Building and Pentegon), and regligious bifots (can you say: God ___ America!) in order to climb the political ladder. A guy whose wife was making about $100K a year until her husband became a U.S. Senator, when she was given a newly created "public relations" job (with no specific duties) for more than $300K a year. That's an honorable, hardworking guy who made it the hard way! The fact that he is a socialist is frightening enough, but those of you who think his life reflects the American dream should examine your facts.

As the article alludes to, it's not just a smart choice, it's also a very interesting choice. They complement each other on strengths/weaknesses, and they have different personalities - Obama scrutinizing every word and camera angle and Biden always speaking his mind, sometimes without thinking much... yet their views are probably right in line with each other. Fascinating.

It's really sad to read some of these comments. Some still defending the Iraq war. Some ultra conservatives that actually believe that Iran poses a threat. It's obvious that many of you really don't research these topics very well. You just have a opinion based on superficial exposure to the topic. How many of you know that McCain wants to give corporations a blanket 10% reduce in taxes and hope that it will stimulate the economy. Where Obama says he'll consider corporate taxes if they bring the jobs back from overseas, provide health care for their workers and stop paying their CEO's like rock stars. Which plan makes more sense to you? McCain is the one who is saying Obama will tax everyone. I'm going to let you research that one. McCain is also the one telling you that off shore drilling will bring down gas prices (maybe in 5 to 7 years), but the fact is oil companies aren't doing enough drilling on leases they already hold. And it's the Speculators that are driving the price of oil up. There's no shortage of oil. There isn't a line of tankers outside Saudi dying to fill up with oil. There isn't one gas station on the planet that doesn't have plenty of gas to sell you. The Saudi's offered to increase production and no one wanted it.

FINALLY!!! Someone states the fact that Hillary didn't want the VP position. I knew that from day one. But there are some idiots out there that say that if he didn't pick Hillary, he won't get their vote. I know people would like to see a woman in office, but study the facts. People are more blinded by the notion that it would've been historical, instead of thinking what was best for the campaign. It's a great pick for Obama. If you're a TRUE Democrat or someone looking for a shift in politics, you'd make the right choice. There's a lot of "spiteful" voters out there. Grow up.

Read about Brzezinski and you will understand the relationship.

        • Posted By: engnr2b @ 08/23/2008 12:14:43 PM

OK, I still don't understand the relationship. Just because someone (who by the way doesn't have any phoenetic tie to bin Laden, Barack Obama, or Biden) excersized poor judgement on the Soviet Union's aggression, or supported East German dissidents does not make Obama, and/or Biden Osama bin Laden. You are a certified nut, lady.

          • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/23/2008 12:22:50 PM

Brzezinski leads Obama's foreign relations team. Now, do some research for yourself as to how Brzezinski's advise lead to the worst (and continuing) disasters. Read how Brzezinski FUNDED OSAMA BIN LADEN under the Carter administration. Read how Brzezinski's advise was the direct cause of the US hatred and formation of Islamic Fundamentalism. And, remember that Obama CHOSE him to be his number 1 advisor.

            • Posted By: engnr2b @ 08/23/2008 1:23:07 PM

Then say that, instead of making some ignorant, racist, tie with the two names. You wonder why people are berating you for your comments, its because MOST of us view people for who they are, instead of trying to make fun of their 'funny name', or assuming that anyone whose name doesn't sound like yours is a terrorist. I am african american, with a family name of Spotted Horse. I suppose you'd think (incorrectly, of course) that I'd scalp you? Or lynch you? No, I simply have a name that doesn't sound like yours. You brought this all on yourself, lady.

    • Posted By: engnr2b @ 08/23/2008 11:57:06 AM

Why does that speak volumes? Are you really that ignorant? At least everyone else backs up their comments with valid belief systems and facts. Making some sort of pheonetic tie (which is a stretch at best)with Osama bin Laden's name does does not mean that Obama and Biden are from Iraq, or Afganistan, or that they are bin Laden, or that they have his belief system, or whatever you were trying to imply. You know what speaks volumes; your shallow view of politics.

      • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/23/2008 12:05:33 PM

Research Brzezinski's history. Brzezinski happened to be advisor to Kennedy & Johnson (Vietnam war intervention). CARTER - funding of money and arms to Afghan Mujahideen (now known as Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda) to overthrow USSR backed Afghan. Political asylum for Shah of Iran - caused the hatred of US and the Iranians to take over US embassy. Brzezinski - indirect creator by direct planning of the Islamic Fundamentalism. Brzezinski - number one foreign relations advisor to Obama.

    @ Softball mom:

Your ignorance bewilders me. I guess you don't know or perhaps understand what's been happening for the last 5 years; let me fill you in. We were led into a war under false pretenses (LIES to put it simply) by a bunch of rich Republicans with only their own best interests at heart. They've led a war that has spent billions upon billions upon billions upon billions of dollars, and there was absolutely NO relation between Iraq and terrorism (well, when the war started... of course now that we've raped their country for 5 years they probably want to kill us all now). Maybe we should've sent our troops to Afghanistan instead... Oh wait, I forgot, there's no oil there. And all the while they were doing this they were giving tax breaks to the RICH and doing nothing for the middle class. And you talk about tax increases? Maybe the half a trillion dollars we spent on a completely unnecessary war should be more to blame for that necessity. Bush has flushed this nation's economy and respect around the world down the toilet and he's wiping his *** with the middle class. Vote McCain if you want this to continue. Vote Obama if you want any hope of moving forward and recovering from this disgraceful Presidency.

    • Posted By: Twister52 @ 08/23/2008 12:04:38 PM

We were led into a war by a bunch of "lies" by rich Republicans?

You have absolutely no idea how clueless that statement is, do you?

Have you done ANY research about how MANY Democrat party leaders (ie, Congressmen, Senators) and leaders of other nations publicly stated BEFORE the war in Iraq began that they believed that Saddam Hussien (sp?) had weapons of mass destruction and was a threat to the free world? Seriously, go google something like "Democrat leaders WMD statements" and see what you get. And, please, don't stop at the first link you find that claims "oh, those quotes are taken out of context" and stop reading. SEARCH and READ a LOT and it will become clear to you that Bush made the best judgement he could with the the military intelligence he had; the SAME judgement many of your sainted Democratic party leaders made.

With loyalty and trust like you display I bet you would have criticized Lincoln's Civil War decision too. Like Bush, Lincoln had numerous detractors and nay-sayers who tried their best to destroy him and yet almost 140 years after the war ended, he's still generally regarded throughout the world as one of the best presidents America ever had.

      • Posted By: smashley @ 08/23/2008 12:27:44 PM

We need to stop playing this blame game. Mistakes were made on both sides of the issue, there is no doubt in that. Regardless, the call to war was absolutely led by George W. Bush. And it was a mistake. And it still is a mistake.

    • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/23/2008 11:56:32 AM

And Obama's #1 foreign policy advisor is none other than Zbigniew Brzezinski, who under Jimmy Carter, single-handedly is credited for arming and funding the now Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, Iranian takeover of the US embassy, providing chemical warfare to Saddam to use against the Iranians - not the Kurds.

Good judgment? I think not. Not with Brzezinski at the helm. His hatred for the Soviet Union has been the death of many a US military troop - from Vietnam to the Iraq-Afghanistan wars and is responsible for the 3000 civilian lives killed on 09/11.

      • Posted By: raddave @ 08/23/2008 12:34:10 PM

Brzezinski did not single handly arm the mujahadeen, he was a proponnent to giving them arms, but that is a program that lasted through out the 80s. The Mujahadeen was not Al Qaeda. He did not cause the Iranian Revolution, itwas the State Department that decided not to help the Shah. And the National security advisor does not decide policy on wheter to give weapons to another country, so he did not give Saddam chemical weapons. The Iraqis developed those on their own.

        • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/23/2008 12:49:24 PM

You didn't read far enough to find out who was the mastermind behind. And, Brzezinski headed the Chemical Warfare Commission under Ronald Reagan. Saddam was backed by the US - "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".

Brzezinski's control over Carter was the strongest. It was also his plans for Operation Cyclone that spelled out how to fund and arm the Afghan Mujahideen - of which Osama bin Laden was part of and became leader of. Maybe you need to look up bin Laden and do some research.

      • Posted By: Let'sGetReadyToSTOPRumbling @ 08/23/2008 12:29:33 PM

I still think you are demented.

Firstly, "Obama" is not "Usama" and he, the presidential candidate, has no more ties to the midEast than you do. Too bad you biggots cannot understand that, like most Americans, Obama has ancestory in another country... on another continent (Africa, specifically).

if your allegations were substantiated, you would be able to state the "source(s)" of YOUR information. Just because you spew words about a foreign advisor, that doesn't convince this reader (and probably many others) that your comments are any more accurate than your play on names.

Secondly, if your accusations were near accurate, you give one person too much credit. Which of the politicians campaigning has an absolute history of perfect political alliances and professional or personal choices? Jesus Christ/Allah/Jehovah/Buddah, etc. is not running for President!

Too bad for you that McCain doesn't have a brother that's the Governor of your state this election (how about finding one of the "chads" and using it as a necklace).

        • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/23/2008 12:44:05 PM

        • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/23/2008 12:37:01 PM

Did you bother to google Zbigniew Brzezinski before you started to berate me? If you don't know anything about a candidate, you research those who he has surround him. I already knew about Daschle and Hart. It was Brzezinski that required going through mountainous articles. And, it is Brzezinski who scares me even more than Cheney.

You need to crawl back under that rock! I'd rather fight the enemy over there than over here. What about Obama's 683 billion dollar spending bills or did you conveniently leave that out? That is above and beyond the deficit. Where does he get the money? How about Obama's shaky foreign policy of appeasement? Iran will bomb us. It will happen and if it does I will be looking for the very folks who put this garbage Obama into office!

John McCain was in the Hanoi Hilton largely due to the fact that he wasn't the most competent pilot. He crashed 5 planes during his short active duty career - 4 in accidents that he was responsible for in one way or another and the one he was shot down in.

But then what do you expect from someone who graduated 894th out of 899 students in his class at the US Naval Academy?

Geez...even Bush applied himself more than that and he's a moron.

We do not have a good choice for president. Neither of the candidates is fully qualified to lead this nation into the future. Their are valid arguments against both candidates. America is in big trouble. The question is: Which one will cause the least irreparable damage? A careful study of their entire lives will be necessary to satisfy that question, and still the question looms; What is each of their true agendas? Is it the betterment of America as a nation or ??

I have seen a few comments about oil leasing that seemed to come from misinformation. I own several properties with mineral rights. We occasionaly have companies lease this property for a 5 year period at a fixed price per acre. Many of the properties have been leased over the last 40+ years with no drilling taking place. The leasing company leases large amounts property in the area and may drill only on the property with the best possible chance of finding oil. The reason there is no drilling on most of the property is because there hasn't been enough oil there to produce. After 5 years the lease terminates and the oil companies have to renew the lease, which they pay for again. With that said, Why would the government, who owns the oil rights on off shore properties not what to lease the rights to the oil companies? This would put millions of dollars into the treasury and even more if they hit oil or gas. Makes no sense to me. In the next 20 years, even with alternative energy, the U.S. will need 25% more oil and gas than we use now. This should be a no brainer.

Fox News is re-airing the Saddleback Church forum today. I recommend that if you did not see it live last Saturday, you catch it today in it's entirety (avoid soundbites). I was not sold on either candidate, and after voting for Bush in the last election, I was leaning toward Obama this time. However, after seeing how the two candidates answered that Pastor Rick's questions, I'm definitely voting McCain! See it for yourself...experience and leadership, versus waffling. That's what I saw, you will too!

    • Posted By: ajani1000 @ 08/23/2008 12:38:39 PM

I am suprised that many people ignored the fact the McCain avoided a reply to 3 major questions. He eloqently said "BUZZ WORDS" to trigger a certain response to the "Christian" audience and those who sometimes do not listen "CRITICALLY". Even though Barack seemed to sputter, you could tell he was thinking his thoughts out and not just say "what the audience wants to hear". Secondly, if McCain was truly against certain issues why is he considering a V.P. who is pro-choice...I give John McCain a Gold medal after the forum with Rick Warren, he wowed the audience with "powerful rhetoric" and I give Barack a gold medal for "thinking his thoughts out".....Americans stop being so naive......

      • Posted By: OcPete @ 08/23/2008 1:15:51 PM

ajani, I must have been fooled by the "BUZZ WORDS" and rhetoric, because I (according to you) don't listen "CRITICALLY". That said, will you please point out the three major questions, that McCain avoided. I will pay attention this time, even take notes on what you're talking about...unless of course, it's above your pay grade.

Well, Obama killed two birds with one stone this time...First off, the candidate for "change" really turns out to be the candidate for status quo in picking Biden. Secondly, Biden's selection underscores Obama's self realization of his lack of experience and ignorance in foreign policy. Well, at least Obama 'came clean' with the American voter on these two things BEFORE the election. Hmmmmm, come to think of it, can you name 3 bills Obama has sponsored during his short senatorial career. Ok, well, maybe name two then. Oh well, can you just name JUST ONE??
