THE LAST WORD

Anna Quindlen

Endless Summer

In the future, all presidential candidates should be sent to a secure, undisclosed location with lemonade and some Adam Smith.

Comment: Thank you, Anna. I don't see why it is so difficult for congress to actually enact such a scene. There could so easily be a start date for campaigning for the presidency, then a legislated "chill out" period. I thought it was much to Obama's credit to take a measly little week off and go on vacation to Hawaii -- and of course he was vilified for it. August is the perfect month -- no public politicking of any kind for 2 full weeks prior to the start date of whichever convention comes first. Just think about how that down time could help each candidate to refresh his/her mind, get some much needed rest, some quiet, contemplative time...wow, too good to be true?

    Comment: Ms Quindlen--

"...a week before the conventions each candidate would go to a secure, undisclosed location and make a concerted attempt to remember what he or she stands for."

    And you?

Isn't it ironic: Xerox is hoping it can profit by teaching companies how to reduce their printing.
