In the future, all presidential candidates should be sent to a secure, undisclosed location with lemonade and some Adam Smith.

Thank you, Anna. I don't see why it is so difficult for congress to actually enact such a scene. There could so easily be a start date for campaigning for the presidency, then a legislated "chill out" period. I thought it was much to Obama's credit to take a measly little week off and go on vacation to Hawaii -- and of course he was vilified for it. August is the perfect month -- no public politicking of any kind for 2 full weeks prior to the start date of whichever convention comes first. Just think about how that down time could help each candidate to refresh his/her mind, get some much needed rest, some quiet, contemplative time...wow, too good to be true?
Ms Quindlen--
"...a week before the conventions each candidate would go to a secure, undisclosed location and make a concerted attempt to remember what he or she stands for."
And you?
Thank you, for your column consistently reminds me the whole world hasn't gone crazy, nor is the opposite true, that I've gone crazy. When I'm fearful that whoever has the most simplistic answer to this very complex world will rule the day, I can remember your writing. There are no quick and easy answers, no matter how much we wish for them. It's a complicated place, and we need folk like you to remind us to take a deep breath. (Isn't that what summer was supposed to be all about?)
Took the words right out of my mouth! Thanks for saying what too many don't want to hear - or think about.
Anna Quindlen???s ???The Caucasian Card??? was painful to read. When she, even in an opinion essay, so flagrantly misrepresents the facts pertaining to this issue, she loses all credibility and hurts both back and white people. Problems are never resolved by pretending they don???t exist. And dishonesty used to further one???s agenda is both unprofessional and unethical. Where is Newsweek???s editor? Even as fiction, which it is, that piece is ugly. And it tarnishes Newsweek???s reputation too.
You said it, sister! I can't take 2 more months of this insanity. Take all news streams off your desktop, & tivo everything you want to see on TV,. Also, I like to to sit out on my deck, surrounded by potted geraniums, read, & pretend I'm in Italy.

Anna Quinlan's column is the first thing I read when my Newsweek arrives, but this week I'm wondering if she would have written it had Hillary been the one receiving the nomination. I sense some cynicism, some bitterness that the campaign is going on sans her candidate. She is right - the campaign is going on too long, but not to the extent that it deserves her column space. She is better than this.
Right on, as usual! :-)
Yes endless for the blind; those who really have their eyes open are saying the opposite.
What I want to know, and what Pastor Warren didn't ask, is whether Senators McCain or Obama think puppies can go to Heaven? And will they appoint Supreme Court Justices that feel the same way as they do about this?
Beautifully written, Ms. Quindlen. I find the thought of a quiet backyard at night with the family evocative and a good analogy for what we need. Except that this is not a regular election; the way this country is run for the next 10 to 15 years will either spell a new beginning or a waning for the US. That deterioration has already started and God help us that it is not too late.
Americans cannot afford to be lazy this time. What we need is to focus less on the entertainment value of this election and more on the issues. Don't tune out, just tune in to what's important, because what is important right now is critical.
This was an inspired column, Ms. Quindlen (Although I am as guilty as anyone of binging . I've found that watching BBC helps). Keep up the good work.
Anna Quindlen for President! At last, someone displaying a whiff of common sense! But the problem is that the press, which has grown to mega-monster proportions, won't let the subject or the candidates alone. We have been subjected to some of the silliest reporting ever produced, and we tremble at the thought that there is more yet to come. Perhaps it's the media in need of isolation; better yet, why can't we downsize it?
I love this. I totally agree. I was just thinking the other day about how this presidential race has been going on for a long time, and I am already tired of hearing Obama's and and McCain's names. That's pretty bad.
