Don???t worry about Obama being a radical. He???d sell his own mother in order go get to the white house. He, like those who support him will change their mind as many times as is necessary in order to achieve what they want.

I agree, Obama is a worthless human being who won't help his brother George in Kenya who lives on $1 a day! He won't help him, LETS HIS OWN BROTHER LIVE IN POVERTY yet wants the RICH in America to pay over 50% in income taxes to support the poor, give out free health insurance, etc, etc

So What If He Is A Muslim? So everything! It is politically correct to say that the muslim religion is a "peace loving" religion. That is a load of crap. Take a few minutes and read some of the koran. It REQUIRES practicing muslims to hate all other religions. Take a look at what is being taught, right here in the USA. Muslim schools are teaching the same hate that they are in the middle east. It is time that we wake up. We are at war, wether you realize it or not. A few minutes of "open eyed" investigation will bring the truth into the light.
There are indeed "peace loving" muslims, but they are not "practicing" muslims, but rather "secular" muslims. When you understand the difference, the truth becomes clear.

  • Posted By: blindhowlin @ 08/25/2008 3:21:28 PM

Truth is irrelevant here. Over the last 8 years, Republicans have made great use of the fact that if you repeat a lie enough times, the majority of American people will accept it as truth.

    • Posted By: EagleJim @ 08/25/2008 3:46:30 PM

Blind Howlin, you should free up your intellect a bit. Try becoming more of a free-thinker instead of such a blind kool-aid drinking partisan, who beleves everything his side says is true, and who has opinions and judgements spoon-fed to him.....who obviously believe that "the party" is the only entity qualified to ascertain reality.

You obviously don't know that "Big Lies" are told by both parties.....by ALL parties.

Taking the position of "we're pure and righteous; they're evil and corrupt" just makes you out to look very foolish and ignorant. C'mon, wakeup. Both sides are equally flawed and both sides use lies in politics when the truth doesn't advantage them.

Again, knucklehead, Big Lies are told by both sides.

      • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 08/25/2008 3:55:24 PM

Eagle Jim, you are guilty of the worst kind of intellectual laziness. I speak of the notion that there are always two equal sides to any debate. Unless you believe in complete relativism it is apparent that some arguments carry greater more and intellectual weight than others. Fox news has helped perpetuate this inane idea that if you can stake out two side of an argument that they are both equal and that is being "fair and balanced"

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 08/25/2008 3:43:19 PM

Or the majority of American are not sufficiently educated to understand the truth. Fear wins a lot. That alone goes to show the character, or lack thereof, of this country. Say it enough and it will be believed. Good article though, it can be a reference to all the bloggers who say - who me?

  • Posted By: cbat @ 08/25/2008 12:03:51 PM

Thank you Newsweek for bringing up this crap again. Did you or not antcipate that the closet racists were are just looking for an accuse to not vote for Obama and would take this article totally out of context. If Obama was a Muslim, which is NOT, the McCain camp would have no problem exploiting this issue, but they have not. The Muslim faith is no different from other religions, they have good law-abiding people, and bad people who are extreme, who twist the religion around to suit them and justify wrongdoings. just like Christians. Yes, I said Christians. Some of the most bigoted, hypocritical and judgemental people I know, and I was raised as one.

    • Posted By: 4astrongamerica @ 08/25/2008 3:55:05 PM

You are being judgemental and hypocritical yourself. I am a devout Christian and firmly believe in my faith. As part of my faith, I believe that we should love one another, treat others as we want to be treated, but I also hold other high moral standards. My religious beliefs are only part of who I am. I am also a hard working, law abiding citizen, American taxpayer, devoted wife and mother who has earned my way out of a life of poverty. I consider everything that is important to me and my family when voting. I do resent; however, being labeled a racist if I choose not to vote for Mr. Obama. I respect the right you have to your opinion and your vote as you should respect mine. Ordinarily, I believe that respect is earned, but I will offer you mine as a show of good faith.

  • Posted By: lionssmile @ 08/25/2008 3:53:47 PM

Obama NEVER said he didn't want to wear the flag pin because he didn't want to take sides. He said he didn't wear it because wearing it doesn't prove you are patriotic, it's what you say and do that proves you love your country not what you wear. Kind of like going to church every Sunday doesn't make you a Christian. A person who is suppose to be trying to follow the example of Christ, like taking care of the poor and infirm.

  • Posted By: Geoffrey MacPherson @ 08/25/2008 2:54:37 PM

First of all, it's not surprising that 10-12% of Americans think Obama is a muslim. We live in a country where people like Rosy O'Donnel can spout off millions about a 9/11 Bush conspiracy and a third of people profess belief in UFO's with no scientific evidence. The 10% believing him to be muslim is the usual percentage of ignorant people our country accepts in our free society.

As to Islamophobia, I can't believe you would even ask the question. Of course there are a lot of Americans with fears of the religion. I can assure you that the 9/11 hyjackers did not shout, "Jesus is Lord" when they crashed the planes. The people murdering Americans are professing a belief in Islam. Of course all Muslims aren't suicide bombers but the ones that are, are. To not recognise that fact is to deny rational thought.

Finally, Obama will be elected or deafeated based on his policies and character, not by color or religion. Those issues are far more important to the pundits than the vast majority of Americans.

Well said, however I think that you are being a bit naive to think that race and religion will not play a major role in about 10-20% of the overall population. As an educated black female who has successfully navigated corporate america for over 20 years, I can assure you that regardless of education and qualifications, race still matters.

      • Posted By: AskPlus @ 08/25/2008 3:49:21 PM

That percentage is always there. Well said.

Look at these blogs. Wow, this is one dumb country. Bush is Jewish, terrorist, vegetarian - have you heard?

  • Posted By: MSKP77 @ 08/25/2008 3:41:21 PM

No, it's not surprising that up to 12% think he's a Muslim. His name is all many people need to hear before making a decision about that, albeit an ignorant and uninformed one. The fact of the matter is, the vast majority of the country is Christian, with probably close to half being fundamentalist Christians. Christianity as an organized religion is about getting converts and having people think the way they do. It's the same with most religions and many times the true message gets lost in the mad grab for church members.

The only candidate who would have it worse would be one who was not religious at all. I feel certain people would elect a Muslim over an Atheist. Atheists are the most feared of all, unfortunately.

  • Posted By: mjbruce @ 08/25/2008 3:19:34 PM

Well. as most of us Americans know that the radical muslims have ruined it for the decent muslims. You cannot blame the decent Americans for doubting anyone that comes from that religion now. They have always said they would get us from within. Look at all the mosques that are teaching hate and all that crap about Americans. Their kids go to these marassis (sp) and learn all of it. Like we americans want to kill all of them and tell them that we are the devils and eat little kids and the list goes on an on with all this hubbub. just nonsense and kids don't know the difference. They teach it in our colleges and universities also in case you do not know....

Romney - an effete French-speaking millionaire.

McCain - an aging old fart who is still reliving his Viet Nam days, still fighting the wars, but he ditched his first wife for a millionairess. Now he too is a mega-millionaire. Out of touch. Out of tune. and Running Out of Time.

Bushes - the most mysterious family in the USA. Supporters of the Hitler regime. Wall Street Scions. Mega-millionaires with close ties to Saudi Princes and the Bin Laden family. Architects of two of the worst banking crises in the history of the USA. Perpetrators of four wars, reinstitution of torture, imprisoning illegally, profiteering off national disasters like Hurricane Katrina, and of course, creating one of the world's largest humanitarian crises in the Middle East - displacing MILLIONS of people from their ancestral homes in Iraq permanently.

Do my fellow Americans really want to be represented by these *** for another four years?

Try to adapt. Try to embrace cool. Try not to blow it again. The world is watching, hoping and waiting for us to wise up and show our true colors once again: Courage, Loyalty, Decency, Intelligence, Ingenuity, Honesty.

We have lost our way with the Bushes. McSame and Romney will be like Laurel and Hardy trying so hard to appeal to the Middle Class - the majority in this country who works hard to put a roof over their heads. These effete, elitist millionaires are not only out of touch - they're out. Period.

Everyone on this blog is confusing Muslim with Fundamentalist Extremist.

Fundamentalism - in any religion - is truly the danger. Not someone's Muslim, Buddhist, Christian or Jewish faith in moderation. It's Zionists, Fundy White Supremicists, and Muslim extremists who are the threats to peace and prosperity.

Down with Fundamentalist Religion - it is the roadblock to Peace. I'm all for any religion in the White House, as are most Americans. The nuts on this posting are totally out there.

    • Posted By: Screenplay @ 08/23/2008 11:50:39 PM

McCain signed a pre-nup. Romney actually "worked for a living" and "made his own fortune". Brought the Olympics back to life financially, which was no easy feat. Biden voted for the war, said that Obama was inexperienced. Obama now turns to an aging white- haird Biden, for "changing" back to " change in the White House" by edorsing experience which Obama said he did not need...confused yet? Now let's see how the Clintons will play out the convention...this should be very good theater, after all they have booked the best nights at the convention, the best caterors, the best entertainment....

Oh last time I looked was those awful millionaires that provide jobs for the masses. You're position in life is what you choose to make it.
Libs, I have found, like spending other people's money , as what did the Obama (after book sales) give on his muli-million dollar income to charity..1%?? Check past records of donations to income.

Yes, everything is totally acceptable as long as the candidates are Republican. Romney, McCain, Bushes, Cheneys - all can do no wrong. But those Dems - they like to spend? What are you talking about?

We had a perfectly balanced budget and a huge surplus from the last DEMOCRAT in office. And look what your bums did with it.

9/11 happened on the Republican watch. Your leadership should be tried for War Crimes in the World Court of the Hague for illegally capturing and imprisoning people without legal representation, and for torture that was also illegal. Because now, if someone does it to our own soldiers, we will not be able to hold the moral compass.

Your GOP leaders are trash, stinky and corrupt. Get the big money out of politics - it's a conflict of interest for a mega-millionaire to run for President.

Sure, let them create jobs for people in the private sector - totally with you there.

        • Posted By: cutter37 @ 08/25/2008 3:37:37 PM

The Congress, not the President, is primarily the budget balancers or busters. The DEMs give the crdit to Clinton for balancing the budget. He certainly played a part, BUT it was Newt Gingrich's "Contract with America" that gets most of the kudos. Give credit whwere due! I'm not defending Bush or the last 3 Congresses re the shameful runaway spending. We need to end this Iraq disaster and exact from them enough oil money to reimburse our costs in ridding them of Saddam. Many Iraquis, I'm sure, never asked for us to get envolved, but I bet they're glad that we did. We also must end or seriously reform ALL the entitlement (welfare) programs.

...and while it was under Republican control it basically spent this country into bankruptcy...check out the GAO's own numbers behind the massive debt incurred under Reagan, Bush, and Shrub. It's appalling. Or it should be, if anybody paid attention.

          • Posted By: mcrochip @ 08/25/2008 11:12:42 AM

And the President, a republican, has vetoed every attempt at change presented by the Congress.

  • Posted By: rdoudna @ 08/25/2008 1:45:34 PM

I'm sorry for all you guys thinking that the US is a Utopian society, it's not. A Muslim has no chance at becoming President for the forseeable future. We are bigots and what's more we know it. Personally I could careless if Obama was a Muslim (funny how we all love Muhammad Ali) he's the best man for the job. But there are far too many others that do care because they are bigots whether they want to admit it or not. That said, Obama is not a Muslim, end of story.

Obama is the LEAST qualified candidate since 1948! He wants to raise taxes in the beginning of a RECESSION. Go ahead and hate the rich but top 10% income earners paid 2/3 of taxes. The rich pay YOUR fair share.

They also spend 40% of the consumer economy. So what happens when you raise the taxes on the rich?

One, Obama plans to increase the total tax rate to OVER 50%! This includes income tax, social security tax, capital gains taxes, etc add up to this. All this money will flow into Washington which we already know is SOOOOO GOOD at spending OUR money! It's going to be wasted, nothing will change EXCEPT the rich will have to use more tax loop holes, open FOREIGN non US companies, invest OFFSHORE and this will lose the VERY PEOPLE WHO VOTED for Obama their jobs. 2 to 5 MILLION jobs will be lost and Obama will be the worst President since Herbert Hoover!

      • Posted By: createdequalchrissy @ 08/25/2008 2:49:52 PM

Careerdaytrader, it's obvious what side of the financial fence you reside. I'm not rich nor am I poor and I pay my own "fair share" of taxes.

        • Posted By: careerdaytrader @ 08/25/2008 3:37:05 PM

Bullshit you DO NOT PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE of taxes ! Go to irs DOT gov. Go to tax statistics and take the total revenue and divide that by all the income tax returns filed. It comes out to $9,600 or so per person. Also considering many returns are for kids or people basically not making much the AVERAGE REAL TAX PAYER should be paying $12,000 to $15,000.

My guess is you paid $4,000 to $6,000 in taxes. You may even feel that this is a lot! But trust me its the rich who pay YOUR fair share and we're sick of even the TALK of raising our taxes. It's people like me who are making up the $6k to $12k you FALL SHORT in paying!

I resent people like you who don't even cover your fair share telling ME I need to pay $150k a year vs $107k! Pure BS ! You are a thief criminal and so is Obama. That A$$hole won't even give his poor brother George in Kenya who lives on $1 a day any money but wants ME and other successful intelligent people to pay more in taxes while the less intelligent, lazy good for nothings pay NOTHING more?

          Pure BS!!

      Hmmm. Kennedy, LBJ, Carter.

  • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 08/24/2008 11:44:00 AM

It is naive in the extreme to think that anyone of Muslim faith would be elected as president in America in 2008. We have been attacked by Muslim extremists - did you think people wouldn't notice?

Just as someone of Russian descent could not have been elected in the 1950's or even '60's, because their ties to our enemy of that moment, the Communists, would have been suspect, so too would anyone with ties to Islam, however tenuous, be acceptable now.

But the proplem is worse than barring someone of the Muslem faith from the Oval Office. Evangelcals in this country have made Christianity -specifically, blind allegiance to Christianity - the litmus test. It isn't even enough to be Christian anymore, one has to be the "right" type of Christian. You have to love Jesus enough, and in the correct way - even McCain, without any vague ties to Islam is suspect.

All religions don't have equal access to the Oval Office, and haven't for some time. But in the last 20 years, it has become increasingly apparent that for many, there is only one religion that is acceptable for any Oval Office candidate, and that is the radical, born-again, evangelical brand of Christianity that thrives on intolerance and arrogance.

To them, Obama, with his message of tolerance, diplomacy, working together to find solutions, and his personal beliefs in a women's right to chose what happens to her body, will never be acceptable. His family ties to moderate Moslems are just a convenient way to paint him as unacceptable - as far as evangelical Christians are concerned, he IS the infidel.

And he would be if he had no family ties to Islam.

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/24/2008 8:11:47 PM

I agree with much of what you say, but we have not been attacked by "Muslim" extremists so much as terrorists. These could have been ANY religion(s) - but they just happened to be Muslim.

This country is dominated by Evangelicals and also by Jews. Anybody who happens to be Muslim would automatically be suspect.

But I take Obama at his word - he's a Christian, he's a deep thinker, he has obviously pondered about life and death, and matters that concern Evangelicals.

So why this lingering doubt that he's lying about his faith? Why the concern about Reverent Wright? It's all just fodder for the ignorant to continue to be ignorant - and gives them a better reason not to vote for Obama. They may not like to admit it's simply because he's black... he's also very different from many Americans in terms of his background and overseas exposure.

I grew up overseas and I can tell you, it's a real eye-opening experience. You get to see the US from different perspectives and it really makes you think. You also get a lot more news of the world than you do here. We tend to focus our news on very narrow interests and leave all the rest. It's a pity, because with all this communications 24/7, we're still fairly ignorant as a nation.

"Education" is not indoctrination or brainwashing which often occur in religious upbringings. BUT, such activity is also replete in many of our universities being spouted by liberal, never having toiled in the outside world, tenured professors working their Svengali actions on impressionable sophmoric minds.

This is a free country and Senator Obama if even he were to be a muslim should not be discriminated against for choosing a religion that he is comfortable with. Unfortunately, lies, propaganda and bigotry diminate the airwaves and e-waves. He was a member of Rev. Wright's church until recently. A period some media have peddled to be in excess of twenty years. How many more lives does he (the Senator) need to be a muslim? I know Americans are not stupid and can see through these lies. As for me, I will vore for him. I do not care if he dined with the Prophet Mohammed or with the Devil. He has his right to his religious beliefs.
