Obama Misspeaks, Calls Biden 'The Next President'; Biden Calls Obama 'Barack America'

ABC News' Sara Just reports: Journalists who were awake until the wee hours waiting for confirmation that Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., was indeed Barack Obama's running mate, cannot be blamed if their hearing is a little fuzzy today.

But after today's Obama-Biden speeches to a massive crowd in Springfield, Ill., many reporters are rolling back the tape and asking each other, "Did he really say that?"

When introducing his running mate, Obama said, "So let me introduce to you the next president - the next vice president of the US of America, Joe Biden."

And then when it was Biden's turn to speak, the Delaware senator called the presumptive Democratic nominee "Barack America" instead of Barack Obama.

"My friends, I don't have to tell you, this election year the choice is clear. One man stands ready to deliver change we desperately need. A man I???m proud to call my friend. A man who will be the next president of the United States, Barack America,??? Biden said, per ABC News' Sunlen Miller.

Well, I disagree with the over-simplifying of the reason why campaigns fail. Dukakis' tank moment is short had for his failed bid but he didn't lose because of that, he lost because George H. W. Bush attacked him and he didn't defend himself. Kerry (who should have known better) didn't lose because of the Swift Boaters, he lost because it took him two months to call them on it. In both cases people wondered, with good reason, how can a person defend this country when they are unwilling to defend their good names.

Things stick or don't but to reduce a campaign to a single symbol works well for TV but is rarely the case in real life. Obama did well in choosing Biden, because as an attack dog he'll pound on McCain day in and day out, that's what people want to see, someone who will fight for them. Is it an accident that the most influential Democratic politician in the last 16 years won the White House twice because he never hesitated in taking off the gloves? Hardly.

This man supports Corporate annexation of our government, use of government to restrict ???free??? enterprise to the chosen owners of congress, use of government ???regulations??? and ???regulators??? to facilitate the looting of our treasury, our natural wealth, our parks and preserves, and all ???public??? resources! He actively installs judicial activists to promote the death oriented philosophies of the Evangelical movement and the most ???rabid??? reactionary preachers of lies, filth, and heresy! He is an apostate of Strauss; a fellow traveler with Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Feith, Clarence Thomas, Bork, Kristol, Alan Keyes, Francis Fukuyama; Ashcroft; and William Galston to name a few! The Straussian ???noble Lie??? fist so well with their assumption of ???elite??? right to lead and be served by the lesser humans who actually ???own??? no houses!

Biden has accepted $5,133,072 in contributions from lawyers and lobbyists since 2003. Obama does not accept contributions from federally registered lobbyists.

And he has one other weakness that hasn't received much attention to date. One of Biden's sons, Hunter, is a registered Washington lobbyist in a year in which Obama has been excoriating lobbyists and the culture of corruption in Washington. The younger Biden is a name partner at the firm Oldaker, Biden & Belair, LLP, and seems to have specialized in lobbying for just the kind of earmark spending by Congress that Obama has vowed to slash. Republican insiders say the party is likely to make an issue of Biden???s family lobbying ties.

Also expect to hear more about Biden???s close ties with credit card companies. His largest contributor (based on total contributions by employees) over the past five years has been MBNA, the Delaware-based bank aquired in 2005 by Bank of America than until then was the world's largest independent credit card issuer and a major supporter of the 2005 bankruptcy bill that Biden crossed the aisle to support.

I have to agree with some of the posts here that Newsweek has lost all journalistic integrity and any hint of fairness. Sad that it had to come to this. As far as McCain and his houses, well I can't fault a guy for having the good sense to marry a beautiful rich young woman.

WHY IS IT A SURPRISE THAT ROUGHLY 30% OF HILLARY'S VOTERS IS GOING WITH McCAIN?

This should not be a surprise. Exit polls taken after numerous democratic primaries showed 10%-to-20% of those voting for Hillary, said they would never vote for a Black man as POTUS. These are not my words. These are the responses given to exit pollers as they queried voters exiting the polls. It is only logical that if 15% of her voters freely acknowledged Obama's race as the reason they voted for Hillary, then you can safely assume a matching 15% felt the same but did not publicly admit it. In addition, 10%-to-30% of Hillary's voters were primarily GOP crossover voters and Reagan Democrats, that acknowledge to polling people that they were planning to vote GOP in November no matter what.

With these two facts unhidden and publicly available, why is it a surprise that nearly 30% of Hillary's voters are supporting McCain? Duh?

With 20%-to-30% of Hillary's voters acknowledging during the primary they never planned to vote Democratic in November's General Elections, is it not disingenuous for Hillary to claim she has 18-million cracks in the ceiling. Really? With 20%-to-30% never planning to vote for Hillary in November? Is it really 18-million "sincere Hillary supporters", or is 18-million minus 3.6-million crossover voters causing havoc in the democratic primary?

Sean actually makes some sense here. The media is always looking for that ???sticky??? moment to either catapult or sink a politician. We as Americans need to do our own research and figure out which candidate is best for us. The numbers are what they are???.just numbers and are not an accurate depiction of who Americans will REALLY vote for.

Here???s a hypothetical question: You are in a voting both, the ballot outlines the policies of Candidate 1 & Candidate 2. No mention of age, race, color, party affiliation or wealth. Who would you vote for? Probably the one that has your best interest in mind???Right? So why can???t we just close our eyes and take this approach with this upcoming election??? It might sound naive, but a person can dream. :)

We as Americans need to vote for the best candidate to lead this country back to prominence and take care of home first. Regardless of their race, creed or color.

What difference does it make Mr. Alter. As long as we don't have the chance to vote for that horrid woman that you and your fellow journalists destroyed with your sexism, your personal bias, it's win-win for you. I write with disgust as a long time democrat who has no party any more; who has no fourth estate to go to for truth and protection of democracy.

Obama camp downplays Clinton backers at convention

DENVER (AP) - Barack Obama's campaign dismissed concerns about the impact of die-hard supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton on the choreographed show of unity Democrats were opening Monday at their nominating convention.

Opening night at the Pepsi Center, the main venue for the four-day Democratic National Convention, aimed to tell the Illinois senator's personal story to the millions of voters nationwide who will begin tuning in to the presidential campaign. Obama's wife, Michelle, was the evening's keynote speaker.

An emotional highlight was expected to come with a video tribute to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The liberal stalwart was diagnosed in May with a malignant brain tumor and has had surgery and a six-week course of chemotherapy and radiation.

Behind the scenes, however, polls showing significant Clinton support still being denied to Obama and pro-Clinton demonstrations at offsite venues were creating a different kind of anticipation. Clinton has backed Obama and was scheduled to speak Tuesday night.

"There are a lot of delegates here who had passionate choices in an extended primary season," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs told "Today" on NBC. "We feel confidant that if we can demonstrate a record of change, a record of vision ... a team of Barack Obama and Joe Biden can convince Democrats, Republicans and independents to support a ticket of change in November."

Republican candidate John McCain tried to widen any schism remaining between primary-season rivals with a TV ad featuring a Clinton supporter who now backs McCain over Obama.

"She had the experience and judgment to be president," says Debra Bartoshevich, identified by the McCain campaign as a former Clinton delegate. Of McCain, she says: "I respect his maverick and independent streak, and now he's the one with the experience and judgment. A lot of Democrats will vote McCain. It's OK, really!"
