Thank you!!! Finally someone has the courage to point out the truth about what's really behind what's going on here. It became obvious to me months ago that the elephant in the room in this election cycle was race. As one who grew up in the segregated South I am painfully aware of the evil and destructive results of racism. I totally agree with your analysis and your warning of what it will mean if this country doesn't wake up and realize that a man of Obama's intelligence, temperment, and judgement not to mention his policy statements which are right here at his web site on the internet are clearly stated and easily accessible to anyone at any time of the day or night, so the excuse that people don't know enough about him is no one's fault but their own lack of curiousity...or is it that they don't WANT to know about him because of the color of his skin. I have long waited to see SOMEONE point what certainly should be obvious to any astute observer who is following the two candidates closely and making judgements on their style and grasp of issues. I find it astounding that Senator McCain, the POW war hero who I use to think of as a maverick, a man of honesty and integrity, has turned out to be just another politician who will do anything and say anything to attain the office of President. We need an inspiring wise leader at this critical time and Barack Obama fits that description. Wake up America, we cannot afford to get this wrong AGAIN!

Of course white people think that Obama would give African-Americans preference over white Americans... white Presidents have been giving white Americans preference over African-Americans for two centuries. We cannot believe someone wouldn't give their own race preference. That's why race continues to be an issue in our society.

I knew it was coming....If we don't elect Barry we are a bunch racists!!! We're supposed to vote for him because he's black...isn't that racist???? I'm not voting for him because he is a leftist America hater who blames the world's woes on America and thinks more Big Govenment is the answer. I'm voting on principles not because of "White Guilt" like so many other of my brethren. Blacks should be careful of what they wish for...If he's elected some might say OK Black America you've made it! Now shutup and go away!

The article is not saying we should vote for Obama because he is black. The article is saying people are not going to vote for Obama because he is black and the more qualified candidate. We really do need education change in this country. Try reading slower and summarizing the paragraphs. You may just get it.

    To B1962,
If you think you'd be considered an Uncle Tom, then feel proud being an idiot. You site no reason for your apparent disdain for Obama. Just going along for the ride, right? Got nothing better to do?

So Jacob, who will I be..and "Uncle Tom" because I am a Black man who will not vote for Obama?

Mr. Weisbert, this is, by far, the exact truth I have been waiting to see in writing. We, as Americans, will loose our very sould if Senator Obama is rejected because of the color of his skin. Some white Americans want him to be "white", but he can not because "America" says he's Black. Blacks want him to be "more Black", he can not, he is biracial. It's as if everyone wants him to choose sides. As he is a human being, as we all are, he is doing the best he can with the reality that is his. I have watched cable tv and have cried at the behavior of some pundits and others. The media has become so unfamiliar to me it is unrecognizible. However, if this is the way Americans want to continue, and have this bigotry taught to their children, then America will be America no more. The time has come. Otherwise, if McCain is elected, we, as Americans can look forward to World War III, courtesy of John McCain. And this, many Americans know is true. They voice these opinions strongly on "The Journal" on C-Span as they call in on the Democratic, Republican, and Independent phone lines. What actually surprised me was the truth of white Americans who strongly voiced this fear of a McCain election. Thank you.

In sum the article is self serving & narrow; race & racism is alive & well , it will not change if Obama wins nor will a loss stop others in the future.Voters vote for a variety of reasons; the reliance and polls the Clinton's efforts in the primaries is misplaced. Obama campaign rest on Bush"s failure, absent this fact he may not be in the race, and McCain"s mystique is finished . With Bush & Co. as a subtext, the neighbors are fine! Many have discoursed on what an Obama victory could mean for America. We would finally be able to see our legacy of slavery, segregation and racism in the rearview mirror. Our kids would grow up thinking of prejudice as a nonfactor in their lives.
    I am amaxed as

DID NOT FIT IN POST: The following is amazingly presumptuous "Many have discoursed on what an Obama victory could mean for America. We would finally be able to see our legacy of slavery, segregation and racism in the rearview mirror. Our kids would grow up thinking of prejudice as a nonfactor in their lives. Rearview & nonfactor, I thought this type of naivete was non existent; if in doubt visit Tulia, Tx.

I find your premise that any white person who does not vote for Obama is racist insulting. Could it not be that we don't think he is qualified to be president, regardless of his race?

    • Posted By: luvUsa @ 08/23/2008 10:30:56 PM

Think about it. What experience did G.W. BUSH, Ronald Reagan, JFK, FDR, NIXON, Clinton and others have. No one tried to discredit them on their lack of experience in the the run up to the election. Why is that? Just another coded way to be an undercover racist by questioning Obama's experience?

So let me get this straight, if you don't vote for Obama you're a racist? Well, I'd have to say that that is at least partially true. However, if you're a white person running for mayor in a so-called black city, you have no chance of getting elected. This is "our town" they would say (and I've heard them say it). And if we do elect Senator Obama, who is obviously the better candidate, it will NOT end all the racial problems of this country. That's just a silly view

This article hits the nail on the head. It is frustrating and perplexing that the people most hurt by the Bush/McCain policies (ie. the poor and the working class) are just those people who will turn away from someone who actually has the vision, the desire, and the ability to help ALL Americans, not just those well off or lucky enough to even care about corporate tax breaks.

  • Posted By: SAGG @ 08/23/2008 10:01:18 PM

Wow. Pretty blunt stuff. I think you're mostly right, though. I also believe some whites are trying to find reasons for NOT voting for Obama, as opposed to simply not voting for him. That way, if he loses, these people can say, "Hey, it wasn't race! I'm not a racist! He just didn't do so and so!" The fact of the matter is whatever Obama does, he'll be far more criticized than the "safe" and "familiar" McCain. This is about HIM, not us. Not our country. Not about the economy and the Bush policies that McCain's espousing which helped to cause it. Nothing else exists except stopping Obama. God, I hope Obama wins, I really do...

Joe Biden said it best just last year: "The more people learn about them (Obama/Clinton) the more their support will evaporate." And it's happening.

To the Polynesian/English/Italian Lawyer: You would rather vote for a candidate who graduated in the bottom 1% of his class at the Naval Academy or a person who graduated in the top 1% of his class at Harvard Law. You would rather vote for a person who has the character to commit adultery while his wife who waited for him for six years while he was a POW in Vietnam or a person who never has cheated on his wife. You would rather vote for a US Senator who helped his friend Charles Keating get preferential treatment and was indicted than a US Senator who has fought against influence peddling in Congress. You must be one helluva a lawyer! Did you get your law degree in night school?

Its tragic that racial bigotry is still alive and well in our country. The country has one chance to elect man who would change the direction of this country. McCain has lots of negative baggage which I hope that the Obama campaign can present to the American people.

  • Posted By: Galasso @ 08/23/2008 9:10:18 PM

This article is the height of absurdity. Weisburg draws conclusions that suit his purpose to use race as the reason for Obama's slide in polling while completely discarding any other negative information on his chosen candidate. America would elect a black candidate easily if that candidate didn't have the questionable baggage of Barack Obama or proved to be so liberal as to identify himself as a socialist. This is not that complicated - Obama's major flaw is his stunning lack of experience and his inability (or refusal) to articulate what "change" means. His flashy oratory skills are sharp when he is snapping his head back and forth in an arc between teleprompters, but when he is unscripted, the hesitation and stammering is almost unbearable to watch. He has presented himself as an enigmatic figure who criticizes the past without offering a single substantive policy answer to any question as to his plans. He looks like he's "winging" it most of the time. That's not good enough. Weisberg is not credible whatsoever in this article.

Another insult from the left! Obama, his campaign and wife have insulted americans and white's through their deeds, affiliations and words and then compound the insult by asking for our vote. Also, my guess is that the fewer than 10% of blacks that choose not to vote for Obama are older citizens too, and their thoughtful choice will be similar to others who chose not to vote for him. Enough, with the blackmail tactics, that is, if one doesn't vote for Obama, their racist. Grow up! You want to be honest? Barack Obama, because of his thin resume and lack of experience has no business being a candidate for president of the USA.

At one point I agreed somwhat with this author, hoped that obama might be able to heal some of the differences between races and countries. Not too sure now, whats he going to change? and how is all this change going to be paid for? sounds similar to some others who offered big change and delivered too! much at the expense of freedom and liberties...Castro for one. His talk is all too similar, his ideas cloudy and unrefined. it has nothing to do with color, you should feel shame for making it an issue. I want whats best for my country, America. Obama's starting to look like he is turning to anything that will get him votes. this is a sure sign of weakness to Americans, our Allies and our enemies. And you trying to make a race issue of it just seems to add to that feeling....pity.

    • Posted By: markshells @ 08/23/2008 8:51:51 PM

I forgot to mention that Obama's running mate has ALSO spent 30 years in the senate, like Mccain....did HE make a ton of difference? I think not! Another flawed attack by Obama. Inexperience is not really an issue. new views may be what we need, but we must have strong leaders, not someone who resorts to chicken____ comparisons that don't stand up under scrutiny.
