Over50, you have some valid points. You are correct to say that color is the wrong reason to vote for anyone, just as Mr. Weisberg says it is the wrong reason to vote against anyone. The truth of the matter is that elections should be voted based on the issues and how each candidate intends to handle them. Unfortunately the majority of the voting public don't even study each candidates position. They vote along party lines or based on the lesser-of-two-evils.
Race is an issue in this election. Obama may say he doesn't look like the faces on the currency and that he may have a different sounding name, but he isn't saying this to get that 12% of the populations vote. He is saying these things to get the point across that they should not matter. His opposition has taken these comments and made him out to be racist. They have linked him to people of color who have made racially motivated statements for the sole purpose of establishing guilt by association. That is unethical and unfair. Overtly these may seem like simple political attack ads, but they play on the deeply held fears of white america's psyche so that people accept these misrepresentations as facts and don't look past the statements to the motivations behind them. Nothing McCain's camp is saying is overtly racial in nature, but the effect unleashed most definitely is.
My vote is going to Obama, not because he is black, but because I believe his policies will help our country not only internally but within the world community. In order for America to recover, we need both a strong infrastructure as well as strong allies. I just don't think McCain has the knowledge to deal with the first or the diplomacy to deal with the second.
It is unfortunate that such a dynamic country is still held hostage by small minded
tribal affiliations in the 21st century!! It is this group of bigots thats accelerating
the demise of the so called American empire espcially in a global economy.
Too bad so sad as you say in America.
Another BIASED, HATE spreading artical by an author (Jacob Wiesburg) that needs to be FIRED. You Jacob are promoting RACISM with your articals. What, you think the whiteman will shiver in fear over fear of more Roddney type rioting?. That may have worked for OJ Simpson. NOT THIS TIME !. If the blacks start rioting America will be covered in smoke, not from the homes and buildings the blacks would be burning and looting, it will be GUN-SMOKE, and when it's all over, and the smoke clears, the survivors fingers will be pointing to the MEDIA!.
I think you've missed the point, Mr. Weisberg. Write the same article from the perspective of the black voter. For whom is he or she voting, and why? Answer: Obama, because he's black. That's the wrong reason to vote for anyone.
As for the worst part of our history, I'm really sick of 12% of the population holding such huge sway over American life. There are constant "reminders" that my ancestors were slave owners. Perhaps you include yourself in that category. My great grandfather fought to end slavery, but no one, black or white, has ever offered to thank him and the other hundreds of thousands of white men who laid their lives on the line to se the black man free. And, by the way, I've never owned a slave, and neither did my father, my grandfather, or my great grandfather. And yes, I detest modern black culture. I hate "hos" and "pimps" and "bling," and rap music.
FINALLY...Someone said it out loud! Let's stop beating around the bush (no pun intended) and call it exactly what it is. The reason why Obama is not 10pts ahead in the polls right now is not because he is too liberal or an elitist or (my personal favorite) too "exotic". It is because he is BLACK. Whether Americans agree with his policy ideas or not, one thing is abundantly clear...Ordinary (read: white) Americans would not have these so-called "trust" issues with this same candidate if his skin tone wasn't so dark and name wasn't Barack Hussein Obama. We can pretend that as a country we are above and past racial/religious prejudice but it is still a very ugly part of not just our past but our present. Sadly, the proud and proclaimed bigots are refreshing...at least they are honest with themselves and the world. The group that scares me are the people that don't mind hiring an Obama as their mechanic or even their accountant. They'll send him a pie when he moves in across the street or have a beer with him when the game is on. BUT when they are alone behind that voting curtain and they have to make a choice to overcome their hidden fear and prejudice to vote for an Obama or to keep the status quo, this is where we will see how far we've come as a nation . Don't kid yourselves America.
"the worst part of our history"
At first glance, I didn't think he meant slavery. I thought he meant the last 8 years of Christian extremism, an unjust war, letting Bin Ladin go free, fictitious WMD, letting poor people drown and starve after Katrina, but spending 29 billion to bail out Bear Sterns .... now Freddie and Fannie... We are hated around the world, and our economy is bad. In RECENT history, in the the ~50 years after the Civil Right era and the 60's, the last 8 yrs HAVE been the worst part of our history!!
Your article just represents another attempt at "reverse discrimination " at the highest level. To say "Obama's defeat would say that when handed a perfect opportunity to put the worst part of our history behind us, we chose not to" basically says chose Obama not on his merits, but to prove to the world we are trying to not discriminate agaisnt a black person. so we will chose him, even if he is the less quailfied candidate. I don't even think Obama would want to be elected for that reason, I hope not. So lets not use race to explain anything here, most white people will vote for the person they believe will be the best leader for this country, I suspect most black people will vote for Obama based solely on the fact that he is black and that tells you how "the perfect opportunity" really was chosen not to. posted by WFD @ 9/8/08 12:15pm
Why would anyone want to put a black man in the Oval Office just because he is black or to cure the sins of the past? This is affirmative action at its worst. If Barack loses this election it will be solely because he did not have the guts, strength, intelligence, foresight to select the best running mate in the person of Hillary Clinton. When you have two great horses running such a close race and your due in for the victory race, you don't pick up one of the dead horses and drag it in the race behind, i.e. Joe Biden, who could not even carry his own state against Clinton. Reminds me of Ashcroft who lost an election to a dead man in the Governor's race and is then rewarded with the Office of Attorney General. I am not voting for Barack Obama because I don't agree with where he stands, not because he is black. His judgment of not selecting Hillary further affirms my inclination of his poor judgment. Nothing bad in his ability as a lawyer, a speaker or a person as a whole. I am sure he is a great father, a family man, but in matters that deal with the country i find him sorely lacking. He took gigantic a leap backward in selecting Joe Biden and not Hillary Clinton. History could have been made and I can almost assure you that his lead in the polls would be double digits had he made the right choice and not a selfish choice.
Now this is playing the race card to the fullest! According to the way this article is written, we should ignore qualifications, ignore everything, and focus on the fact that Obama is black so some how, by voting for him, racism will magically come to an end. So listen up America.....ignore who you think is the best canidate, and vote this election based on race! Talk about "White Guilt"!
Why do you automatically think that because the article talks about people being racist, it's referring to white folks?
This is by far the most perceptive piece I've read on the run up to the election. Unfortunately so. You may, in fact, be the first to have the audacity to say what everyone knows, but few are willing to speak about openly. If Obama wins it will only happen because the percentage of racists in our country has finally been reduced to an imperceptible minority. I'm hoping that's the case, but I'm not holding my breath. Thanks for telling the truth.
I agree. This article talks about those who purposely will not consider voting for Obama simply because he is an African American. This is a fact... and there may be a significant amount people in this group that can negatively affect his chance of winning the presidency. The article does not state that these folks are all white people, or even just white people. Racists comes in all races and nationalities.
I agree with you, jhubers, it took guts and insight to write this article. Why? Look at the negative comments. Facts are facts. As Judlseih above stated, this article talks about the people who are purposely not considering Obama because of the simple fact that he is an African American. These folks will say it is for other reasons why they are not voting for Obama, but they know what's in their heart. Tharticle is
Weisburg is way off. In his strange and simplistic view of this race, there is no merit to John McCain, and no great liability to Obama. The truth is both candidates have liabilities and merits. The issue of racism actually works in Obama's favor, not to his detriment. People are jumping on the Obama bandwagon either because of black-against-white racism, in some cases, or as a white statement (to oneself, primarily), that "I'm no racist!" (See, I voted for Obama, so I must not be a racist, think some foolish people.)
Obama has a stunning lack of accomplishments for someone in his position, and it isn't racist to point this out, or refuse to vote for him. Affirmative action may have its time and place, but at NO TIME should we treat the most powerful position on earth (POTUS) as one where affirmative action applies. If Obama wins, it will be in spite of his (non-) record, not because of it. As a freshman senator, he's only sponsored (by himself) one bill, and co-sponsored 2 others. That's enough for some of you voters?!?! Really?!?
And it truly is the economy stupid! The war was a lie yet no one really admits it. People like adulterer Rudy Guiliani is held in high regards yet NY appeared to have funded his trist with now wife. This hero appears to have left his first wife because he didn't like the way she looked and it also appears he filed for a marriage license to the rich lady before the ink was dry on the divorce papers. Yeah, Limbaugh in the inner city to buy drugs yet he sets the standards for morals and values. Pat Buchanan considered a serious analyst when he preaches old divide and conquer rules and doesn't appear to care for anyone who doesn't look like him. Yeah i'm mad, good and mad that even when faced with the truth, people won't stand up. The millions watching the speech for her because they wanted to see what she was going to say not because of a love affair for her or McPain, and the same with him. Women aren't going to fall for this poor subsitute. We went to war on impulse and we're in a mess and he chose Sarah Palin on impulse and it is already messy for the scandal in her own beloved Alaska. They were so busy lying and ripping at Obama that they forgot to give a platform for getting America back on track with the economy, the war in Iraq, supporting our troops after they come home, health care, education, which obviously this woman needs to spend more time at home and less trying to advance her career. She attacked hard working americans by belittling what Obama did to support the thousands of people who lost their jobs. I noticed she said nothing of his former Pastor because hers is scandalous so much so they took down the website, but not before I got a couple of those hatefilled sermons. I can't say anymore because I am getting mad!!! I pray that the Lord will rid this country of its bigotry, hate filled ways, the divisiveness, the poison that divides us. Until we all recognize that not one of us is better than the other, I guess it will be hard to elect a woman or a black as President.
This is a true comment. He would be leading by at leat 15 to 20 points but America holds a higher standard for him because of the color of his skin. When the media was poking around in his background did anyone have a problem no they just expected it. but when the media started poking around in sarah palin's background it was off limits and the republicans cheered. Her teen daughter is paraded around pregnant with her boyfriend and america cheers, Michelle Obama is really proud of her country because they finally recognized a black man and a woman could be president. Obama lived on the same street as a bomber when he was 7 or 8 years old, later served with him at an event, he is labeled unpatriotic, Sarah Palin's husband is a member of the separtist party and she is revered, the obama kids were interviewed on television, this woman's kids again pregnant teenage daughter is held to a no standard hands off Sarah Palin's family values, she lies to america about a subject she has paid no attention to but yet alask received 27 million in earmarks. McCain tries to stop the information from coming out on the investigation called trooper gate in Alaska until after the election. Come on what is wrong with this picture. It is time All people are treated equal and this separatism, racism, hate, poison, division stops dividing us as Americans. That is why I support Obama fair and equal treatment for all not some.

Newsweek has miscalculated the downside associated with printing Mr. Weisberg's opinion.
Myself and my neighbors all agree that we have lost respect for what we perceived to be a legitimate publication.
If Obama is not elected it will be due to the fact that the country felt there was a better candidate for the position or the left was just to much to stomach.
What gives? It's a no brainer. McCain is qualified and Obama is not. End of the story.

Finally some truth speaking! An Obama loss would not mean to me a loss for America. It would mean that the America that I have come to know and love is still here. For me it was said long ago, there are two Americas, one black, one white, separate and unequal for all time.
Were Obama to be a clear thinking Black man with centerist ideas I may be inclined to agree, but, his thoughts and ideas lead me to recognize his obvious Socialistic tendency. Socialism has not worked wherever it has been tried, and for the political Left to attempt to put a new face on such an old mistake by hiding it behind a face that is Black is troublesome.
If Obama wants to open the discussion let him say what he means instead of cloaking the long, slow slide into govenment dependence by simply calling it a "change" to a better idea.
