Why this hue and cry over a small minority of whites who would cast their ballots for President on the basis of race when 90-95 percent of blacks favor Obama? Racism is racism no matter whose skin color is involved. Or would the commentator have us believe that those 90-95 percent of blacks would vote for Obama solely on the basis of his qualifications? I doubt it. This article reeks of hypocrisy.

This is the most racist article I have read in Newsweek. Hopefully rhetoric like this will not hurt Obama's chances. Wasn't it Martin Luther King Jr. who dreamed of a day when a man could be judged by his character instead of the color of his skin. Weisberg just doesn't get it . . . . .

Should McCain choose Condoleeza Rice to be his VP, it might help both him to win and the nation to heal.

  • Posted By: Another old man @ 08/28/2008 12:02:27 PM

This is what a Republican friend of mine says: McCain should announce: "It is said that if I win I win because of my opponent's race. I now have to choose my VP. I have many choices, many good choices. So to counteract the abovesaid opinion, I will choose my VP on basis of race: Condoleezza Rice."
The exact form of the announcement aside, that decision could both help McCain to win and help the nation's healing.

The thing is, it shouldn't even be about who's black and who's white. It should be about who can do the best for this country. $100 is worth today what $70 was worth four years ago, and McCain certainly isn't going to make that any better. If Obama wins, then we've got a shot, but if he doesn't, then we'll have botched our chance for getting this country's head out of its own ass. And the scary part to me is, it might be the last chance we ever get. If Obama can't do it, then who else will be able to in the future? That's why I feel that it's not just that he should win, it's that he was to win. So do the right thing and vote for Obama.

Weisberg wrote "The Bush Tragedy". Hardly. And that is just Weisberg's opinion.

Seems like Weisberg is also putting too much into this presidential election. This is only an election for President of the United States. We are not trying to solve all the problems of the world with this election. Way too much is being put into the meaning of whether Obama or McCain is elected.

I am concerned about Obama's inexperience and I am going to vote for McCain. This is NOT a vote for Bush so please get over that. Bush is not running for president.

Weisberg is a tool. What was the point of the article? should i feel bad that i'm white? is there something i'm supposed to feel guilty for? its because of you condescending starbuck drinking elitists that fans the fires of racism. stick your 'you don't get it' and I do smack in the hole you think doesn't stink.
how is it that 15% of the population requires a 100% of our attention. i don't see that 15% of the population caring about how i'm supposed to pay my student loans, feed my family, earn a living wage, or own a home. what don't you write about that.......i guess you never considered that, doesn't taste good with latte.....

I just want to defend Pat Buchanan.

There's nothing wrong with him "fretting about European-Americans losing control of the Country". After all, if the Jews were ever in danger of losing control of Israel, you can bet they'd do some fretting!

Just one of many reasons why Buchanan's fears are logical is there are so many examples from history of how a economically dominant minority (which Euro-Americans are set to become) will be horribly abused and/or robbed by the less successful and intelligent majority.

One example of this is the Armenians, who the economically dominant minority in Turkey and were repaid for it by being subjected to genocide by their jealous countrymen.

Another example is the Jews, who were a economically dominant minority in Germany, and let's just say that didn't turn out too well for them.

What do you have against Euro-Americans that you think it's somehow wrong to worry about us becoming an economically dominant minority in the United States of America?

I really am curious, as I'd like to know where you're coming from here.

    p.s.

On the issue of Jews not voting for Obama because they think he won???t support Israel enough. First off, I want to make clear that one of the few things I like about Obama is that he???s much less likely to send Americans off to die for the sake of Israel than McCain is.

Nonetheless, are you quite sure these Jews are being entirely illogical? If it so happened that Mr. Obama thinks the same about Israel that his friend the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, it might cause Israel some problems were Mr. Obama elected.

NO BOUNCE FOR OBAMA EVEN AFTER THE MICHELLE AND CLINTON SPEECHES! HMMM COULD IT BE THAT EVERYONE SAW THAT MICHELLE'S WAS A SCRIPT AND THAT CLINTON BARELY ENDORSED OBAMA (NEVER SAYING HE WAS READY TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY OR THAT SHE THOUGHT HE WAS!) WITH GOOD OLE BILL SPEAKING TONITE THERE WON'T BE A BOUNCE IN THE FUTURE EITHER! BILL CLINTON WILL NOT LET ANYONE TELL HIM WHAT HE WILL SAY IN A SPEECH AND YOU COULD BET HE WILL SAY WHAT THE OBAMA CAMP DON'T WANT YOU TO HEAR (ITS PART OF THE CLINTON PLAN!)

    "What will the neighbors think?"
The only reason why this presidential election seems to be about race is because the media wants it that way. That is the story and they are sticking to it. This ridiculous article claims with so much authority that "Obamas defeat would say that we as a nation chose not to put race behind us." What a naive notion. I am a white female who grew up in rural AL and I dont care what color or religion our next president is. What I take note of is a senators voting record. Where does he stand on the issues I care about. However, If I did not do the research myself I would have no idea what Obama's voting record looks like or where he stands on issues even though I read Newsweek cover to cover and listen to NPR daily. The only thing I hear from the media is race, race, regligion, and then more race. I know the man is african american, I can see that. Now tell me something that I really care about......This article has it completely wrong. It states that if Mcain is elected then it would draw "global ire". The only people out there who would be out of luck are those who would love to see the demise of this great nation.

Dear Mr. Weisberg. You have to be kidding me! Right? According to you, if the American people fail to embrace this media created ???gift??? from the heavens it must be because Obama is black. Nothing else. We Americans should just ignore Obama???s socialist domestic agenda, weak kneed approach to foreign policy and total lack of experience to vote for the guy because he is black and it will send a good message to our ???neighbors.??? How demeaning can you get? I have faith in the American people and hope that despite the media???s push to put this half-a-term Senator in office on a wave of white guilt, that substance will ultimately prevail to elect the more qualified candidate.

Thank you for common sense from infidel18. It has nothing to do with color or race. It has to do with experience, and voting record. Obama's record on Taxes, 2nd amendment, and ABORTION. How can anyone who has looked upon a picture of their unborn child believe that it is OK to "abort" the most precious of gifts and throw it away.

When was the last time you went to adopt a poor black crack baby? You only care about them before they are born and then once they are they can drown in the waters of Katrina.

        • Posted By: katie0511 @ 08/27/2008 3:22:19 PM

OHHHHHH BULL, its about responsability. My mother was adopted by a poor but clean and self sufficient couple. They raised her as their own with lots of love and God. My aunt and uncle adopted a child. My wifes first cousin adopted a child. Be caring mothers and fathers and NOT crack heads!!!!!!!!! Taking care of what you helped create. No child born to my family will be lacking a home if I can help it.

Comment: When was the last time that a black woman addicted to crack decided to kick the habit in order to contribute to society, and then give birth to a crack-free baby?

In reading the comments to your article, it makes me proud as an AMERICAN (not black, white, red, asian, african,or whatever other appendage you may choose, I AM SIMPLY AMERICAN) that the majority of the posts see through your racist and ignorant argument. Obama's poll #s are dropping in almost every cohort of voters because voters are seeing past the charismatic facade and seeing that Obama is not qualified.

This essay clearly shows that racism is alive and well in America - ON THE LEFT. To assert that an Obama loss would be due to racism is preposterous and inflamatory. Apparently Mr. Weisberg forgot Dr. King's admonition that we are to judge a person by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin. Ironically, Mr. Weisberg admits that he likes and admires John McCain but only discusses Senator Obama's speechifying, his ability to raise campaign funds and - of course - his skin color. Mr. Weisberg forgets to mention anything about Mr. Obama's character.

    • Posted By: EducatedBlkWoman @ 08/27/2008 1:09:21 PM

If its only on the left then why was Rush Bozo on his show calling Barak a product of affirmative action and not the hard work it took to excel at his studies and make it to where he is today. The truth is racism is still alive in America. Black people still have to work twice as hard to be on level playing fields. Affirmative Action helps white women far more often than blacks. I know it I live it. I have been passed over for a white girl dffgigirwoman trttrained

  • Posted By: katie0511 @ 08/27/2008 11:53:30 AM

My vote will have nothing to do with a man's color or race. It is based on my beliefs. Barak Obama's voting record on abortion(how can anyone who has held their own newborn child not believe that a childs life at any stage is of no value), taxes and 2nd amendment rights. It is that simple.

"Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now" -- Barack Obama

Obama only wants the white house for himself, and the majority of his supporters are supporting him because he is black, not because of the democratic agenda, which I doubt most could recite.

    No way, no how, Nobama.
