A very touching and inspiring story. I have enough concerns about his connections in Chicago's machine politics, his light experience, his voting record and his sometimes disdain for working folk to not vote for him. Still, his story is impressive and in its essence, what America offers people willing to work hard: opportunity. Thank you for a thoughtfully written piece.

This is an absolute joke. Waaaaaa Waaaa I lost my father. Get real man. I lost my mom but you don't hear me advertising it. Nor do you hear about thousands of other kids advertising it. This reminds me of..... yeah... that guy who they say is the Messiah? Jesus? Yeah that's it. Didn't his mom have a fling with a Roman soldier and was raised by his step-father, had a prostitute for a wife etc??? Or am I thinking of Barack Obama. Geez they seem so similar, that and the fact that they are both FALSE MESSIAHS!

Yeah how RIDICULOUS. Vote for Obama because he didn't have a DADDY. That seems to be the theme behind his candidacy. It's definitely not experience as he has NONE. Most of the time in Chicago and also in the Senate he'd vote PRESENT but not for or against the bill. It's funny how having a RECORD is not something he ever sought out. Nobody REALLY knows what he'll do as President. TOO RISKY!!!

careerdaytrader - vote for McCain because he was a POW.

NEWSWEEK has buried the TONY REZKO story. They thru it up on their site today and buried it at end of the day. Couldnt find the link to the article so I used Newsweeks search engine which is useless. Then I googled it outside the site and found it. When i pulled up the link, the lead in page shows 3 blogs (the norm) but when I went into the all comments area every blog was wiped out. I dont think that was coincidental.

DOES ANYONE ELSE FEEL LIKE WE ARE LIVING IN THE USSR OR CHINA HERE? The MSM I have lost any respect for. . . they only feed the public what they want them to see and if they are pressed to at least write an article that is controversial about Obama, wham, it is gone within 24 hrs, buried in the site.

ANYWAYS, if anyone wants to read the Who is Tony Rezko article, here is the link that leads to where it is buried somewhere within this site:

Enter Your CommentObama would be our first known "bastard" President. How charming. But the real importance is he is RISKY. he is or was a muslem. He has no core values,(abortion issues) from "Daddy". His connections are shady, he lowered the bar on picking friends. He is an Apostate, not Apostle. So many strikes against him...so few days left, must get the word out again! Where is Reverand Wright anyway, heard he is writing a book, uuuh, uuh.

Yes, I do at times believe we are living in a totalitarian state. It is not however a news periodical that is inflicting it. The disease is in the Justice Department.

This article was truly interesting. Compared to average American children Obama really did have an unusual even strange upbringing. It goes a long way to explain why Obama doesn't really share the values and priorities of most Americans. The way strong men were admired in Indonesia, and women were looked upon as something for strong men to dominate and take, goes a long way to explain Obama's contempt for Hillary Clinton, and the way he's continued to disrespect her after the primaries. From the cultural perspective that he learned at an early age a woman has no right to challenge or disagree with a man. The article was very interesting, but also very troubling in that it shows the U.S. could be on the verge of electing a man that trully doesn't not share Americans core values, and may even disdain them.

Stuffed shirt (biden) meets empty suite (obama) total wardrobe malfunction. What did obama learn? Zilch.

This article is a fawning piece of drivel turned out by someone Newsweek salvaged from Grub Street. In hard copy it may have some value as bum fodder. If its intent was to bring tears to ones eyes it failed. Jon Meacham needs to look up the definition of RUMP SWAB! Then go out and find another line of work.

Chris Matthews says Obama gives him a thrill running up his leg. Mecham seems to get a wet warm feeling running down his when thinking of Obama. He's lost objectivity and a willingness to do the normal reporter's job of checking facts. Basically he's rewritten Obama's book as a news article without any real effort to verify fact.

The story about the boxing gloves is a case in point. Conveniently the stepfather is dead so the only source is Obama. In today's Washington Post, David Mariness quote's Obama's half sister saying her father as a "sweet and quiet man." WHich is it? Sister's "sweet" father or Obama's rather nasty, cruel man? He just made up this story, and Meacham swallowe it hook, line and sinker.

The most tellling aspect of Barack Obama Jr. -- what Mecham completely missed -- is the amazing ingratitude of Obama toward a grandafather who completely adored him and denied him nothing. In the book Obama portrays his recently deceased grandfther as a drunk, a loser, and an embarrassing ass. This goes with the portrait of Grandma as a racist. This man has no loyalty, no sense of decency.

Barack's steeliness is what first interested me in his campaign. And his superb intelligence. We have not had so intelligent a leader, we have not actually had a leader, like Barack in a very long time: probably FDR is the last although the parallels between Barack and Abe Lincoln are stunning. Ole "Jukebox Johnnie: McCain, plays side A and B on every issue, won't even know what hit him. This will be a blowout election.

    • Posted By: loriw @ 08/24/2008 12:18:51 PM

I guess it is Obama's "superb intellegence" that allowed his to arrive at the conclusion that it is OK to allow a baby to die alone in a cold hospital or clinic's dirty utility room after it survived a failed abortion because it is too "burdensome" to the quack abortionist to require him to call a doctor to provide care for the baby.
Will Obama "intellectualize"that it is also OK to refuse care to the very elderly and the medically challenged disabled as well ?

After reading this and seeing JOhn Meacham on Meet the Press, it is apparent that Mr. Meachem has taken it upon himself to issue one glorious, flowerly, shoe polishing piece on Obama after another. He has a serious man-crush on Obama and the only thing he will be focused on is everything HE can do to put Obama in the White House.

The insular Republicans chose John McCain thinking they were seeing light at the end of Goerge Bush's tunnel of darkness when in fact the light they see is an onrushing train.

Comment: I also find it interesting that Fineman says that many Americans can identify with Obama's upbringing in today's America.
Gee, I thought that his upbringing and dreams of overcoming his life of ''hell'' were the real problems of the day: broken families, absent father, child-rearing grandparents, food stamps.... OH YES.... I forgot.... they lived on food stamps but got free college degrees, they resided in Hawaii, wow, that is a terrible place to have to grow up, then they got graduate degrees for free at the best schools .,.. OH YES ... I forgot ... DADDY got free education, MOMMY got free education, SONNY got free education, or, at least part of ot. I guess Obama's college loans for PART OF HIS HIGH-BROW education was his TRUE STRUGGLE in life.
Wow, I can identify with all of this .... CAN'T YOU PEOPLE?!
I could have sworn the American dream was a loving family, undivided and close enough to be in the same household as well as the same country, work hard to educate oneself for the chosen field you have dreamed about since a child, while eating your dinner cooked by your MOM and discussing it with your DAD, while your SIBLINGS chimed in about their own dreams.
Yep, I can sure identify with Obama. .....
Somebody convince me, please, because Newsweek, hard as they TRY TO, have not succeeded.

If Obama's strength and success as a self-reliant man come from the absence of a black father, than why are there so many poor and uneducated black people in America?

Since 70% of black children in America today are born into or raised by a one parent (women) household.

    Oh, that's right. It's whitey's fault.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 08/24/2008 9:14:15 AM

Nice. Maybe because Mr. Obama overcame what are apprently long odds.
I being white, have no personal guilt about it. I overcame mine too. You can here.
I believe in equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome.

Sometimes occurrences in our childhood can shape us, can dictate our futures, for better of for worse. Obama has taken the very best of his father ---his father's dreams, brilliance, ambitions, wanting to bring about a positive change in his government ----and learned from the very worst of his father ----his father's excessive pride, his self loathing, his excessive indulgences (ie women, alcohol), along with the support of a non racist, caring maternal family, and became the Leader he is today.

You have it wrong about OB not inheriting his fathers excessive pride . . . He is even worse than obscessive about himself and his pride:

      DEFINITION OF POMPOUS

Main Entry: pomp·ous Pronunciation: \??päm-p??s\ Function: adjective Date: 15th century
      1 : excessively elevated or ornate <pompous rhetoric>
      2 : having or exhibiting self-importance : arrogant <a pompous politician>

      EXAMPLES OF OBAMA POMPOUSNESS

Now tell me these actions (just a sampling) pertaining to Barack are not signs that he just thinks he is the cats meow. There is no doubt in my mind this man is very much an elitist.

      * Created his own presidential campaign SEAL in the image of the official Presidential seal (altering the words). http://embeds.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/06/23/obama-seal-no-more/

      * Asked the other day if he EVER DOUBTED HIMSELF, Obama replied, NEVER! And grinned broadly. Sounded more like a 20-year-old than someone that just turned 47.

      * OBAMA REQUESTED to accept the Democratic presidential nomination at a 76,000-seat open-air stadium (a rather dramatic venue) rather than at the site of the Dems national convention location across town where nominations usually are held (holds 20,000 seats). (This moves creates many logistical problems the DNC twill need to deal with as well as raises SECURITY CHALLENGES). All because he wants to be idolized by people in massive proportions all around him (like Caesar or Nero) in a grandeur atmosphere. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/07/07/politics/main4236555.shtml?source=RSSattr=HOME_4236555

      * Obama requested aides to try to arrange a speech at a second DRAMATIC VENUE: Berlins Brandenburg Gate! Was not approved. This was the same venue that Ronald Reagan spoke at and JFK made a speech in front of when they were Presidents, not wannabe Presidents.

I watched CNN yesterday and one of the reporters made a comment that one of Obama's chief staffers calls him "oba-me" due to excessive pride and (in my opinion) other narcicistic traits.

ELITIST CHARACTERISTICS - Is Obama an elitist?

        * An Elitist considers himself to have outstanding personal abilities, intellect, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes - even though he does not.

        * An Elitist believes that their views on matters should be taken most seriously and that their views should have most weight when compared to others.

        * An Elitist considers that their views and or actions are most likely to be constructive to society as a whole (THE WORLD, Berlin speech, Berlin speech, THE ONE!). They also believe that, given their extraordinary skills, abilities or wisdom, they believe they have renders him to be especially fit to govern or control.

        * People who believe they are an Elite individual assumes that they should have special privileges and responsibilities in the hope that this arrangement will benefit humanity as a whole (THE WORLD, Berlin speech, Berlin speech, THE ONE!).
