      The comparison of Obama with Palin is a fair one. Palin would become president should McCain suddenly die or be unable to fulfill his duties as POTUS, and, at McCain's age, that is a very possible scenario.

    I recant my position on the "Freudian slip" that Biden made.
    After watching his speech a second time I think it was written into the speech exactly that way!
    Do they really think we are that dumb to think that he didn't purposefully make the association with GWB?
    Either way it was just plain dumb. Yes, I think this is the DUMB and DUMBER ticket.

      Quick question for you Democrats! If Obama can rise up and achieve greatness as you all say he has. If Obama's wife who also went to Harvard and rose up to become an economic success, then WHY is it that they feel the Democratic supporters are SUCH LOSERS that they can't rise up to WITHOUT THE HELP OF BIG GOVERNMENT and OBSCENELY high taxes?

        Because it is Big Government, Bush-style, that is preventing working class Americans from moving forward. The Obamas were in school in the 70's. Life was very different then. Housing was still an affordable and appropriate investment, 20-somethings didn't mortgage their futures to go to college, and people didn't go into bankruptcy court after a trip to the emergency room.

        That's whay the democrats - Bill, Biden and Barack - are saying. It used to be that hard work was rewarded but the special interests and the big businesses (oil, for one) and the lobbyists have taken over. Hard work is no longer rewarded - you can work for 30 years and lose your retirement and health benefits when the company goes out of business (Enron, anyone?). You can fight for your country, come home and have poor health care and no GI benefits.

        Yes, the Obama's made it through hard work, brains, and a bit of luck.

        Give the rest of us a fairer shake, and we can, too. Not handouts, not subsidies, not reparations, not socialism, just a fairer shake.

        That's all we ask, and that's all the democrats are asking for us, the middle class.

        The irony is that the republicans will benefit as well.

          Sorry but you obviously didn't do your homework. Lately yes the Republicans have been moving more towards big government and away from their roots. But Democrats have always been about big government which is why much of the mess exists to begin with. Democrats are looking for equality? Please! Go back to social security where they promised the money going into it would never be used for anything else. Didn't take long for them to lie about that and come up with more government programs to tap into SS. You have been fooled by the Rhetoric they spill at every election.

        Do you drive to work on roads paved by the government? You are benefitting from a government subsidy or "handout" as you would like to call it. Many of your daily comforts are made possible by government but I am sure since this is the internet you will make up some story about how you live in a log cabin and walk uphill in the snow using your bootsraps to work in coal mines everyday whereas in reality it seems like to sit on your rear must of the day typing in the computer. You are a real Horatio Alger! Good luck getting better internet access once Neanderthal McCain is elected who knows nothing about these fancy new devices call computers. Perhaps he and Ted Stevens can build a system of vacuum tubes to help you spew your nonsense.

    Sorry Mr. Speech Writer, but I beg to differ.

    Many of us will vote for Obama precisely because we think he will handle a crisis like Russians in Georgia better than McCain.

    I believe Obama will not issue bellicose and empty saber rattlings like McCain and the rest of his republican predecessors. I believe Obama will get on the phone with our allies (the ones he will ensure that we have) and call emergency meetings of his advisors, and then issue a forceful, powerful, appropriate message to our country, our allies, and our adversary.

    I also believe Obama will do a much better job of presenting America's interests in the world so that we have far fewer adversaries than we do now.

    I don't believe McCain will do anything different than his war mongering brethren in Washington have done for the last 8 years. He will issue angry rhetoric and back it up with a bully's show of force that will be as futile as it is unnecessary. He will enflame the issue, rather than attempt to deal with the issue.

    No, Mr. Speech Writer, we don't want the McCain way. We will vote for Obama BECAUSE he will handle the crises better than McCain.

      How do you know that? What in Obama's actual actions make you believe that. Things he has actually done? His first reaction was to defer to the UN. About going to the Olympics he wanted Congress to weigh in. I'm not saying McCain can do it better - I don't think there is a basis to that argument as the sole reason for voting for Obama.

        Iraq wasn't a threat, and if it was, there were better ways of dealing with it - for starters, having some international cooperation, besides Tony Blair.

        Bin Laden is a threat, and he is still out there, still causing us trouble, and Bush and McCain aren't interested in finging him.

        Tough to have faith in a man with a warrior mentality who can't figure out who the real enemy is. McCain was a valiant warrior, but he isn't the man for the job in 2008.

        A true leader doesn't need to have all the answers. He just needs to know where to go to find the answers, and how to ask the right questions. Obama has already proven he can do that - that is his experience. I'll take his experience over McCain's any day.

    Pres.Clinton and Joe Biden and Sen.Hillary, speeches was very moving to me. I'm a independent voter, I'm not a big fan of the Clinton's but they did what I wanted to hear . All of the them, Hillary, Bill and Joe made me stand up and clap for them during and when finish. I felt good for the Democratic party, I will vote for Barack Obama..McCain is way out of touch, flip/flopping all over the place. POW card is played out !

      I agree. I cheered Gore - what a mistake he made not allowing Pres Clinton to campaign for him. It would be a different country and it would have been a different speech. Obama shocked me as to how much he had to read directly from the teleprompter - especially the few sentences about his mother. Was about time he showed some testosterone - Joe Biden must have woken him up.

      Small businesses create 80% of NEW jobs. Taxing small business owners $280 BILLION is going to mean FEWER new jobs and I predict 2 to 5 million MORE LOST JOBS.

      A TRILLION dollar tax increase over the next 10 years on Social Security taxes is going to cripple the economy.

          There is a lot wrong with this country. Public schools have failed. Democrats support teachers unions which PREVENT them from firing bad and ineffective teachers. These kids grow up, fail, are poor and thus become Democrats. Coincidence? No I think Democrats want to keep people down, uneducated and poor otherwise NOBODY would vote for them!

          I'm not going to pay more under Obama. Day he is elected I setup bearer share Panama corporation and put half my business there and will sleep so soundly knowing that while America is moving socialist they aren't going to pull me into their abyss with them!

            None of that is true actually. Education reform has been the Republican achilles heel for quite some time. Adopted in 2000, and never realized. Especially the home-school, or money following children to the best educations. Lots of promises and nothing delivered.

              Ok so why won't Democrats even TRY school choice? Competition is the BEST way to improve school results. I am lucky that I went to a private school from Pre School till 8th grade. Then instead of going to an all boys school I choose a local public high school. Boy what a JOKE public schools are and that was almost 20 years ago they've FALLEN so hard since then.

              I should have skipped High School altogether as the only things I learned there that I didn't already learn in private school was Physics, Chemistry and Calculus!

              I'm not saying I'm LEAVING but instead of paying taxes on $400k to $500k income I'll structure my business so that I make $150k to $200k here in the US and $300k+ offshore! Then I'll use my Panama corporation debit visa card to buy gas, pay bills, pay mortgage, eat out with, etc, etc. TAX FREE MONEY, I should have done it years ago but LOVE America, but its apparent to me that the country I love is either dead or rapidly dying due to all the dumb A$$es that want SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.                 So you want to take money out of the economy via manipulative investment practices and providing software that enables others to do the same, but you don't want to pay taxes. You claim you love your country, but you'll effectively transfer money offshore for your own personal benefit. You drive on roads, you use the postal service, you accept protection from the police, but you don't want to pay for any of it yourself.

                I've seen women who handle their business without any of the selfishness, typecasting, misogyny, and lack of care for anyone but yourself that you demonstrate. I'd say most women I've seen in business tend towards *less* ego than men, though obviously it all depends on the individual and stereotyping anything doesn't help.           Thanks to NAFTA BEFORE Bushs' terms..You Dems think everything is automatic and have no negative reprocussions in the future...NAFTA sent jobs to China, Mexico, Taiwan and everywhere else theres cheap labor..Hence the layoffs which caused loss of homes, which helped cause bad mortgages..But Dems will blame Bush and the war...Not the fact that their sweet talking Clinton set the ball in motion on both the economy and the war in Iraq.     In all honesty McCain will face harsh criticism on his debate responses since they will fall in line with Bush rhetoric. McCain has said stay the course, 100 years in Iraq, economy is in good shape, strike first ask questions later, kill for oil, drill for oil, redact the constitution, bring the Great Wall of China to Texas. He's a bush lap dog with no originality. Add that to Bush's ego and you have World War III. You have suppression. You have starvation.

    No more Bush. No McCain.

        All jokes aside, this issue with Russia really concerns me. I really believe that a conflict between the US and Russia would be detrimental to the entire world in one way or another. This is definitely one that needs to be avoided, all war should be avoided if possible, But Russia and the US is on another level..

        It's like they NEED war be it with Iran, Iraq, North Korea or Russia. The current powers that be are damaged!

    Shame on the Republicans for taking us to war without any strategy, and simply making one up as you along, like GW Bush chose to do. Why we are still there nobody knows, but it's a shame we just didn't focus on attacking the extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan where the heart of terrorism beats. The so-called experience of the Republicans sucks and McCain is More of the Same, since he never spoke out against Bush's policy in iraq which has been a multi-billion dollar " Mission Unaccomplished" !

    Al Gore just gave the single finest speech directed to a national audience of any at the Democratic Convention so far. It was carefully reasoned, specific in its arguments, no endless repetition of unsupported conclusions, forceful but not bombastic, and packed a lot of content into 20 minutes or so. Boy do I wish Obama would give some speeches like this. Maybe he will during the general compaign. Alden, Le Claire, IA

      You are absolutely 100% correct. Gore was the speech of the night. I remember what he said policy wise and he had complete grasp on what he was saying and believed it. Just like both Clintons. I remember what they had to say. Obama I kept wondering why he had to read each line and seemed unfamiliar to him. He did well attacking McCain because that required rhetoric only. Joe Biden's was the most entertaining even if he didn't say anything of substance. His treatment of his mother did more to get Hillary Clinton supporters to cross over than anything Obama will ever say. She should make more appearances with him if able - if only on Your Tube. She looks game.

      There were lines right out of Senator Clinton's stumps. Her speech writers have been working with Obama's. Bill Clinton's was written by himself and delivered much more convincingly over the TV, which is what matters. Clinton talked about the issues with conviction and knowledge and Obama looked left and right reading them from the teleprompter. Al Gore, although he rushed over the applause, spoke like a president and what he knew what he was talking about. I found it interesting Obama's insecurity in making Pres Clinton speak at the Pepsi Center and not at Invesco. Had he the crowd would have been riled up for hours. Biden-Gore-Clinton-Obama would have been awesome. Waiting 3 hours for 30 minutes didn't come over well. He could have at least came out right after Gore. Somebody better wake this man up and tell him Democrats have not put anyone in the White House since Clintons and it's their proven voters who are unhappy with Obama because he refuses to ask for Pres Clinton's advice. That is the biggest indictment of his inexperience.

    You get paid for this. I think you may want to listen to the speech again Mikey. Please remember he is trying to win the presidency which has been literally stolen the last two elections. The glass is half empty for you Mikey obviously, or maybe you fall short of objective. Are you kidding this is exactly what he has been saying this whole damn campaign.     Lincoln had eight years as a state legistrator with no national experience became a great president. FD Roseevelt had little experience great president, John F Kennedy same thing and William J Clinton. So what dose this exprerience thing tell us about a president. Not much it is their intellect , character, commitment, and unshakable belief in their cause that made the difference.

      I'm amazed that people are still bringing up this ridiculous argument. It's just like Obama's fairy tale on Iraq. Lincoln got around by horse and train as did information. He didn't have to worry about airplanes flying into the Pentagon. JFK came from a long-standing political family and was a war hero. He had 14 years experience and much more than 150 days in the Senate. Clinton was a governor for 10 years. Obama has absolutely no governing experience and neither does Biden. Bush is the only president who has to deal with widespread at any time terrorism. No comparison to a previous presidency is remotely realistic. The next president will have to deal with global terrorism, two active wars - one fomenting and one looming - a recession. unemployment, foreclosures, energy crisis, healthcare, masssive debt, immigration...Obama would be the least experienced president at a time when experience and judgment (his iraq speaking out "judgment" has been debunked) is paramount. This next president will face the most challenges ever in our nation and Obama would be the least qualified president ever. Just fact. Try not to sugarcoat it. Whether the voters care now doesn't change the facts.

      Since the primary obama has changed positions on FISA, abortion, Iraq, sitting down with enemies without preconditions, universal healthcare, DC handgun, death penalty...all since June. Unshakable? And he refuses to admit that the Surge worked.

      Just say he inspires you and that's why you're voting for him. All the other arguments don't hold water. No I am not a Republican and think Obama at this point is the lesser of two evils and Biden just gave him a chance to win. I would like people to open their eyes and see who Obama really is and understand that a man as inexperienced as him will have every American's future in his 2 years on the national scene experience. And anyone would be CHANGE! in Washington after 8 years of Bush.

    Did Michael Gerson listen to the same speech on Thursday night that I heard? Obama called for unity in the face of divisiveness, he did not emphasise division. Unless he feels that any disagreement with the status quo is 'emphasising division'. This is along the same lines as calling out the Democrats as being unpatriotic. No, it is you, Mr. Gerson, who is devisive. You are spewing the same old Republican rhetoric. You, and the Republican establishment, are getting desparate, and it shows. For shame.     Are you guys serious? Good but not great? He had 90,000 people crying with his brilliance. How can a guy who wrote Bush's speeched comment on Barack Obama. Obama is the genius, you guys are speech writers. It must be real hard writing Bush's speeches (terrorism, Al-qaida, terrorism, al-qaida, terrorism, osama bin laden, terrorism...etc.)
