Please be aware that the only reason most of you have a problem with the convention coverage is because you disagree with most of its content, not because they are interrupting speeches. I would wager that the majority of you already knew that C-Span has uninterrupted gavel-to-gavel coverage of both conventions. The reason people don't watch the C-Span coverage is because it is boring. The reason you tuned into the mainstream media coverage is to hear the talking heads proclaim your candidate of choice the second coming of FDR. Because they didn't, you are now outraged because you had to listen to criticism of your candidate instead of the 4 hour infomercial that is a national political convention.

Somehow I doubt the people so disgusted with the media coverage of the Democratic convention will be so vociferous when Chris Matthews is flapping his gums during the Republican convention.

Be passionate, but at least be intellectually honest with yourself.

Thank God someone has addressed this!! I'M NOT A SHUT-IN (just a political junkie!) but most of my convention watching time goes to CSPAN. I certainly don't need Blitzer, Scarborough, Matthews, et al. to "help" me interpret what I'm hearing, tell me what to listen for, etc. Only rarely do any of these people say anything that is remotely relevant. My (least!!) favorite was Matthews' insistance last night that the Clintons have a "personal plan to retake the White House" - give me a break! What a stupid comment.

Thank you for commenting on what I've been thinking the past two days. I always watch MSNBC and love Keith and Chris but would they just shut up for one minute. And the panel, can we do away with Pat for just this once, please just go away. I almost missed the entire Montana governor's speech until I started filipping channels until I found it. He was great...everyone should have been listening. Now this morning, the talking heads are dissecting every sentence of Hillary's speech. Give me a break. She did what she had to do so stop making it into something it's not. I guess they're hoping the Dems will be as brash and insulting as the Republicans will be next week but thank God they're not rising to the occassion.

Being a younger voter, this is really the first time I've truly paid attention to a convention. Listening to the pundits on MSNBC and CNN over the last couple of nights, I couldn't believe how much 'down-time' there was between speeches. It wasn't until I was listening to NPR while doing errands last night that I even realized that the MSM was completely cutting out speeches. I don't know if I've ever felt so furious and cheated. It was as if Governors and Senators from battlegrounds states didn't even matter....

yeah, ccn was talking through half the montana governor's speech, who did an excellent job. after hillary he was the highlight of the night. another network that i was watching didn't air him at all. i'll have to watch c-span for the next two days and go to their website to find out what i missed from mon and tues. finally newsweek does a story that has some credibility.

Thank God for CSPAN -- an American treasure! And their website is great! I have watched CSPAN for years for presidential campaign coverage.

Thank God for CSPAN -- an American treasure! More people need to discover how great CSPAN is for Presidential Campaign coverage. I have watched it for years. I always go to CSPAN for what I want to see to bypass those horrible talking heads. And on their website you can get a convention schedule.

I too am fed up with the punfits - especially Scarborough and Buchanan. I've stopped watching MSNBC. A lot of speeches and events - including the convention - are streamed live on http://www.cnn.com/live/ Dishnetwork has added an extra channel just for the convention. It's a live feed like C-SPAN.

    • Posted By: loriw @ 08/27/2008 2:16:43 AM

Dishnetwork charges for the channel and I'm not paying extra for it.

  • Posted By: loriw @ 08/27/2008 2:15:19 AM

Exactly, they are talking over the very people that we tuned in to hear ( and it wasn't the talking heads).
There was an "Unemployed Nurse" who I guess gave a speech tonight but it wasn't broadcast on CNN because the media had to hear themselves talk. I had a lot of interest in what this nurse had to say because i find it really hard to believe that there is an unemployed nurse in a country that has a nursing shortage. I can only assume that she must be disabled or us unemployed by choice. If anyone heard her speak would you please tell me what she had to say. Being a nurse i am interested.

Didn't watch any of it. When the Republicans have their turn , won't watch any of that. The conventions have been useless since the candidates are already picked going into the convention, If Obama and Hillary had been tied, with no clear winner , then it would have been something to watch. Now, its like watching a corination. Lots of pomp. Lots of fluff. A lot of negative speeches. At the end of the day, when this is over, these 2 parties will still have to work together to fix a lot of problems left by George Bush.

Amen! I ususally like to watch the political coverage of MSNBC and CNN, but the talking heads were unbearable. I switched to C-SPAN; at least I can listen to the speeches and watch the convention proceedings and make up my own mind minus the self-absorbed, over-hyped blather from the cable network talking heads.

i agree c-span no spin no rep trash no mud!! how refreshing. please shut Pat Buchanan up or show a disclaimer of "Republican shill" under his talking head. Having different points of view is one thing but the obvious twisting of fact to suit Republican talking points and his trying to bully over any other person making a point in the Deocrats favbor.

PUNDITS ARE ONLY SPOUTING OFF WHAT THEY HEAR FROM THE CANDIDATES. GET REAL, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WILL, THANK GOD, PREVAIL IN NOVEMBER TO SAVE THE COUNTRY AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

CNN spent too much time talking over Governor of Montana's great speech too!!! He was the speaker just before Hillary and he had a lot to say about McCain's stupid energy policy proposals, about Obama's and about the differences between the "same old, same old" and the need to vote for change ("change we need") - he was GREAT and got a standing ovation, but I guess they didn't think he was substantive enough until they started listening to the crowd's enthusiastic response. He's definitely a politician to watch!

I think tonight went extxremely weel and I hope the plan to built to the final credcendo on Thursday will galvanize voters to defeat McBush. This is mission criticcal - our whole future is at stake and the world is watching.

If we end up wtih McCain, the rest of the world sees this as the definitive decline of America's power and influence. We will sign our warrant to weakness and descent. It will be the end of America's era of greatness. Couple that bad decision with our dependence on world oil - we consume 25% of total world production and have only 3% of it in our country (this from the Montana Governor, who knows the oil biz since they are drilling in the Bakken formation in his state and in N. Dakota) - discovered or not!

We have peaked out on oil in the USA since 1970, just like we will have peaked out on our country's geopower if we elect McCain in 2008..

I started watching the Dem Convention on MSNBC. Ugh! It was forty minutes of talking heads fifteen minutes of convention interupted by comercials. Then I remembered CSPAN and have been there ever since. I found MSNVC insulting my intelligence. I tuned in to see the convention and all I got was opinion,, speculation, gossip and trash. Oberman, Mathews, Buchanan, and the whole lot need to shut up and watch and learn. Thank God for CSPAN. I got to see the convention the way it was many years ago. unadulterated, unabridged, and uninterupted.

I agree and noticed the same thing. Even MSNBC. Thankfully span did cover it. PBS wasn't bad but, C-span
did it right. Their audio wasbetter too.

    great article. I completely agree.

had to switch over to cspan just so I could watch the coverage in peace. Then after the speeches the endless trivial dissection began...of course getting the theme of the night all wrong!
