I so agree with this article. Watch PBS or C-Span. On C-Span you get gavel to gavel coverage and no pontificating talking heads!! The limited commentary on PBS includes historical facts and comparisons to previous conventions/candidates, etc. Other than Keith Olbermann, I can't kill off my brain cells watching pundits and talking heads with more mouth than brains!! What a shame too for cable could have so much to offer . . .

I am glad I caught this article. It was catharsis. For Pete's sake! Just let us watch what is happening, not the paid pundits. ANd while I am on the subject, STOP playing the attack ads over and over FOR FREE. If the parties are going to act like uncivilized animals, they ought to at least have to pay for air time.

Do I ever agree with your comments about cable shows airing attack ads over and over for FREE. And I agree with this article. Watching political events on PBS or C-Span is definitely the way to go. Who watches/listens to those inane talking heads on Faux News, MSNBC et. al? I do like Keith Olbermann but you can fire all the rest of them and the world would definitely be a better place. No, wait, the economy is bad, don't fire them just compel them to keep their mouths shut unless they are reporting real news, relaying historical facts or introducing the next segment. I miss all the great old newscasters who had more brains than mouth.

This is exactly what I said on my blog yeaterday. The talking heads are making up controversies and ignoring the actual convention. I am at this moment watching Chris Matthews trying very hard to exploit his conspiracy theory of a huge rift between Clinton supporters and Obama. If, yeaterday, I had not been stuck on an airplane and only had CNN available I would have been watching cspan, the only honest coverage on tv. I did get to watch the convention in the saved footage offered in cspan. I think the talking heads need to move aside and let the public see the actual convention. I do enjoy Maddow and Olberman but they too should take a break and lock Matthews in a closet. Even the right wing tools on yuor staff have been more fair than Chris.

I'm so glad you told me about C-Span. I suppose I should've known. I found it remarkable that they talking heads (all of them, liberal, conservative, idiots all of them) kept telling me that the Dems didn't do enough with the first night. Well, for crying out loud, how in holy jumping hell would we, the viewers, have any idea when you jackas-es can't seem to shut up for a second. Usually I live with commentary from both sides. I even find it interesting from time to time, even though I think it hurts more than helps in almost every case. However, yesterday I was honestly enraged that network suits (again, all of them, from every conceivable political stripe) could be so amazingly self-absorbed, vain and narcissistic. Outrageous.

The Republican-Owned-Controled puppet theater ... parading as "news" , proved once again they are not aiming to inform the American people in an impartial manner. They are higly paid cheerleaders for the McCain camp (Keith Olberman excepted!). How else can you explain the negative spin on Joe Biden that started as soon as the 3.00 a.m. text messages went out? (McCain had his "base" the media prepared!). How else do we explain the blatant censorship of the Democratic Convention.? I watch CSpan for uninterupted coverage ... I need unfiltered Bush/McCain bashing!!! Our media has been hijacked along with the rest of our democracy.

No Regrets for a Love Of Explosives; In a Memoir of Sorts, a War Protester Talks of Life With the Weathermen
    By DINITIA SMITH
    Published: September 11, 2001

'"I don't regret setting bombs,'" Bill Ayers said. '"I feel we didn't do enough.'" Mr. Ayers, who spent the 1970's as a fugitive in the Weather Underground, was sitting in the kitchen of his big turn-of-the-19th-century stone house in the Hyde Park district of Chicago. The long curly locks in his Wanted poster are shorn, though he wears earrings. He still has tattooed on his neck the rainbow-and-lightning Weathermen logo that appeared on letters taking responsibility for bombings. And he still has the ebullient, ingratiating manner, the apparently intense interest in other people, that made him a charismatic figure in the radical student movement.

HUSSEIN...YOU HAVE BEEN LYING ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP, WITH THIS TRASH......TELL THE TRUTH......We feel YOU haven't done enough.....

    NOBAMA!!!

Dr Bill - you need to get a life - are you a medical doctor - don't blame the democrats for the problems in health care - it is the sucking blood of the pharmas and the insurance cos that are destroying your profession. We need to address these issues - Obama Hillary will do that.

Stop the character assassination - that's what Rove and Rush do - and they are the only multi-millionaires that I see around.

I agree with much or your article. I just wrote an email to about half of CNN about their woeful coverage... and then switched to PBS.

  • Posted By: wendynyc @ 08/26/2008 9:26:21 PM

Thanks for noticing - the media outlets are becoming so boring - it is cheap for them to get these fool talking heads to give us their same ol opinions - I am fed-up with Buchanan, Scarborough, Wolf Blitzer even Anderson Cooper and those sour-faced women - Mrs Greenspan, Ms Borger etc etc.
You are out of our lives - I don't watch them anymore - NPR, CSPAN,PBS - BBC - UK Telegraph, Gaurdian -
bring em on.are all so much better.

  • Posted By: wendynyc @ 08/26/2008 9:15:29 PM

Thanks for noticing. We the American People deserve better - these media outlets are making themselves more and more irrelevant. These talking heads are going to put these media companies out of business - can't wait for that to happen.

People should stop looking at these cable corporate MSM channels and turn to C-SPAn. They will get full coverage and have an opportunity to think for themselves.

i think this whole election has been guided by pundits and i only have one thing to say to my fellow americans....shut off the talking heads, check up on facts and vote with some common sense. another 4 - 8 years of george w bush is a mistake we cannot repeat with mccain.
    obama 08!!!

Newsweek is the most biased Liberal magazine and site I have ever seen-I am a Democrat who has never voted Republican since 1960-don't condemn Fox when you are just as bad the opposite way--fair and balance is in neither of your repertoires--I have been a Newsweek subscriber and reader for years but you are now way out on the left wing!

As someone who has watched Mrs. Obama speak on -camera on several occasions over the past year, this writers comment "The speech looked like it had been rehearsed down to the last hand-flutter" is part of the "coded" pundit speak problem. ANY one capable of using the internet or watching a TV would know that this ISN"T THE FIRST TIME SHE HAS GIVEN THIS KIND OF SPEECH BEFORE. But since Newsweek is part of the "fair and balanced" MSM , I am not suprised that NEWSWEEK is as out of touch as the rest of these overpaid blowhard cretins that have unlimited access to a public soapbox. I'm sure that Mrs. McCain with her wonderful background in drugs and adultery is more in line with your view of "what's good in America".

I don't have cable tv, so I was only able to watch the convention via the internet. CNN's video streaming had almost no commentary by any newscasters.

It was incredibly refreshing, and covered every single speech without any blabber in my ears.

Once again, very glad I don't have cable.

  • Posted By: Heartlight3 @ 08/26/2008 7:35:11 PM

Amen! I will be watching the rest of the convention on CSPAN. I wanted to hear Obama's sister. Unfortunately, I was flipping back and forth between CNN and MSNBC who did not show it, while CSPAN and PBS were showing her speech.

Since there seem to be so many stories about Obama, and posts with links to his statements; well here are a few for John McCain:

I was totally disgusted with BIll Mawr's comments about religion and Mormonism last night during the Democratic National Convention. Although I am not a Mormon myself, I certainly do not support bashing other faiths. We need more tolerance in this society and fewer pundits and comedians who smugly criticize people of faith. He belongs on HBO and people can read his book on religion if they like, but please re-consider having him as a commentator, as he has no business making such comments about religion in the guise of a commentator. Kudos to Chris Matthews for countering BIll Mawr's comments.

Absolutely correct. Such drivel. Get Cronkite back. At least he thought about what he said and didn't simply parrot the talking points of either the Republicans or Democrats. Such useless discussion. Why should we watch the pundits when they seem as bored as I was watching their pontificating.

  • Posted By: notunderage @ 08/26/2008 7:02:15 PM

I agree. I will be watching the rest of the convention on PBS. Less talking heads, more actual coverage of the speakers
