      I had lunch with Chris Dickey today. He is a funny, warm, generous, intelligent and articulate man.
      He is doing his job as a journalist. Apparently, this essay has sparked quite a heated debate, so he must be doing his job exceptionally well.
      You don't have to agree with his views, but to make personal attacks on someone you have probably never met, just reflects poorly on you.

You really believe Sinclair that a sitting 'state' senator with the wife and kids you just saw will rendevous with him using his real name as he claimed and do a deed in the cab? Doubtless that would be a regular deed which even for a state sentaor would be on the vines in no time and he would have his balls literally cut at home. This man who Krauthmmer, Buchanan and the most argent critic has called extemely intelligent, who Bill grudgingly termed smart as a whip early after their campaign fight? In a he said he said scenario you harbor no reservation that a convicted felon could be little lying adn in need of attention and choose rather to believe Obama is lying? Are you sure you dont need to search within for the answer to your crusade? You are rich enough to afford the time out, no doubt.

    C'mon, Dickey...spare us the lecture on Diplomacy. Diplomacy without the will to act IS meaningless and harmful. Look at the UN...a bastion of Diplomacy who accomplishes little beyond self-grandizing, immeasurable numbers of cocktail parties and social events, and immense corruption and waste. Oh...but for the wonders of Diplomacy. Thank goodness Mr. Obama will save such the noble act of talking to our neighbors and enemies. Please....despite the cartoon characterization Bush as put forward by "journalists" such as yourself, one need only look at the endless amounts of "talking" that led to the Islamic fanatics to think that America was weak and ineffective. Endless UN speeches without action lead have led to Darfur and so many other human rights catastrophies, as dictators simply thumb their nose to Diplomacy. Good luck, Mr. Obama. And have fun at those wonderful Washingon cocktail parties sipping wine and chatting about how dreadful things are in Dafur and how someone really ought to do something about it. Good luck with talking the Taliban out of their penchant for the destruction of Western civilization and for the re-establishment of 12th century Islam around the world.

      I didn't notice the Bush administration caring much about Darfur, or much else on the continent of Africa. Could it be that's because they don't have any oil, so we don't really give a damn about them? Sure seems that way.

      Diplomacy has it's limits, but it's tough to argue that the Bush administration tried any at all, because they didn't, they just behaved like the hot-headed bullies they are.

      At least with Obama we know he will attempt diplomacy with all our adversaries so we are not so isolated if it becomes necessary to use the best military force in the world. At least with Obama we know he won't resort to the thuggery of torture to advance a questionable strategy.

      We used to think that of McCain, too, but John is pretty desperate to get elected. It's a shame to see how he has stooped to the level of Bush/Cheney/Rove when he really didn't have to.

          the 4th trimester refers to the time that the baby, that is born alive, is left to die in a dirty utility room of the abortion clinic. Sometimes these babies linger hours and hours before they die...they are cold , can't breathe well, they suffer until they die...alone.

    Diplomacy from a position of weakness does not work for anyone but the other party. How many times does the US have to get screwed before you and your kind understand that there are some nations that only understand one thing. Strength! They will play nice as long as you will talk and all the same time they are stealing you blind. I haven't been in a fight since 2nd grade but I have always understood the time does come to fight. I can't understand people like this that think you can talk out anything with anyone. This sort of thinking ruled during the Clinton years. The practice of sticking our heads in the sand cost us dearly on Sept. 11th. While we were talking they were planning and schemeing to kill our people. I often wonder just what sort of attack it would take to change these peoples minds. How many have to die? Our young men and women in our military understand this and many have given their lives for people who would not fight for anything. What would it take?

      Unfortunately because of the policies of George W. Bush, we are in a position of weakness. Our military is tied down in Iraq and if Bush and McCain have their way, they will be tied down for a long time. Iran knows this and are not really scared right now. 9/11 happened because Bush decided not to listen to the warnings that were given to him, not because of Clinton.

        Nonsense. You will have observed that the French have no military in Iraq,and no military worth speaking of in Afghanistan. Yet they are being ignored by the Russians,while they continue their occupation of Georgia.

        Why?

        9/11 was the fault of both presidents as so deemed by the 9/11 Commission,a bi-partisan creature.[bear in mind that Clinton,in 1996,ignored a similar warning. Indeed,the faults of both administrations are a mirror match].

        and felt like a description of an alternative reality (somehow, in
        the speech, there was missing a clear identification of the evils
        fought in Europe by America, and a consequent drawing of moral
        equivalences between the various regimes. Of course the venue made it
        difficult to address this (but why?)). His "proud to be American"
        message didn't quite ring true. His 'stirring' church-preacher
        cadences at times seemed to be falling very flatly (like a tombstone)
        on the audience, and were thus thankfully transparent.

    For the Dems the word Diplomacy is just a word. In the USA thier "diplomacy is a discrimination campaign directed at americans... at least 5 of them! The frame work is Americans Suck First!
    The DNC and Liberals have no example of diplomacy to show us!
    rather than attack iraq they will appease and find fault with Americans (The Americans Suck First campaing!). a very Martian way to go about things Mr. Dickey!
    Like rather than focus on high oil prices , the Martian way is find fault with Americans first! Everybody use a tire gage --and learn another language!

    The next President needs to create strong allies in India and China, regardless of their faults. At the same time, we need to repair ties to Europe and Latin America. That is the true path to national security, not threatening (or invading) countries that don't share our every ideal.

    And by the way, the Iraq war is about IMF corporations like Exxon taking control of Iraq's oil.
    Of course, profit comes into play. But now the IMF, can by way of economic stress, further sink
    it's teeth into the American fabric. Public laws 89-719 and 94-564 just aren't enough for
    these people.

    An excellent column.... Now, it would be nice if your readers would count the war metaphors McCain has used not only for Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and Russia, but also for the environment and for his Democratic opponents. It would also be good if your readers would count the exaggerations, misstatements, and outright lies issued by both camps as covered by www.factcheck.org and think about whether a candidate who lies his way through the campaign would also lie his way through the presidency.

    Ditto to Mr. Dickey. This is what we call a substance oriented article that shows the real differences in Foreign policy between Barack Obama and John McCain. John McCain's foreign policy is described as from Mars which is true and supportive of Mr. Dickey's assertion of John McCain's foreign policy. He has pretty much learnt from George Bush that preemption is the way to dictate foreign policy. Yet, it has failed miserably both in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    American people must realize that there is a candidate Obama) who is judgmental and obviously from the earth that can give a profound foreign policy in the 21st century. Again, it has elaborated Obama foreign policy in his web site about Iran, North Korea, and how to carry on a prudent foreign policy that will restore American credibility around the world that has been lost for the last eight years.
