Comment: We should never vote for the color of a person because that is bigotry . His color does not make him any less or more capable of running this country. As far as I am concerned, I accept your analogy and lets place Obama on the moon!

Comment: Will Obama`s experience match that of Ronald Regean? Have Americans forgotten the hero and main man from stage and screen? When did they raise the bar for president of the United States? Did anyone have any questions about his experiences? Was he looked upon as too weak to lead in spite of his actor abilities? Is an actor the same as a senator or community leader? One more question, and that is,where did Barack go wrong in his quest for the white house? I am thinking maybe if Barack take some time off and sharpen his skills in the actor and movie business then perhaps those who question his qualifications and experiences would finally be satisfied once and for all,and then maybe not. Obama is caught between a rock and a hard place due to the fact that he is a shade too dark for America.

What on earth are you writing about.
Ford is an admirable person, but so is Mr. Obama.
Do you think McCain and Pailin are going to be the choice in November?

Comment: I agree that having a black as one or both of the presidential nominees is a great leap forward. It is such a shame it wasn't one of the many better qualified blacks that are ethically more upstanding like Ford from Tennessee. I will not be able to vote for Obama as he has caused me to lose all faith in him. I do not feel Obama is honest and most certainly lacks integrity.
Not enough experience either and his do nothing record speaks for itself.

Comment: I agree that Barack's nomination was a historicial event. I really do not care if he becomes President -- but the nomination was the true celebration of all Americans. The job as President of the most powerful country on the planet is not an equal opportunity position. But again hurrah for the nomination.

Comment: Yes, Howard , maybe it would have been an historic time ,if obama had actually been Nominated instead of Chosen by the DNC. They should have gone with Hillary (the sure winner) but since they did not, I am protesting against their Choice with my vote.
It has Nothing to do with him being Black ,as the blacks are so fond of saying .
He never could win ,with no experience and his constant waffling on every issue .

But , alas the DNC has spoken and LOST my vote.

Comment: As an American I stand in awe to see a true moment in American History! Yes, I truly believe that we are on a special time and moment in history and the only thing that really bothers me is how the so call God fearing, high moral country first Republicans can't for a moment knowledge the fact that Sen. Obama has what it takes to be a leader for this country. They engage themselves in nothing but cheap politics, smearing good Americans and what is worse, lying to other Americans , just to win an election. Please Sen. McCain, STOP IT!
You are an American first, why do you lower your campaign to such ugly tactics that only produce division, hatred, resentment and shame? I'm a proud US VETERAN and I served my country with honor! Many have given their lives for this country we love so much and yet you do not hear them day in and day out bragging about their heroism. The Bible says , Let others do that for you. Don't let your right hand know what your left has done, otherwise you have already received your reward. As a Minister of the Gospel, I'm proud to give my vote for an American that I believe will represent all people, in regardless of race, color, religion, etc.
May God give you wisdom, love and peace so that you may make good, righteous decisions, even if it means that you don't win an election. I rather win a good standing with God and my fellow citizens.

FINEMAN you must acknowledge the fact that whichever party man win, the republican or democratic, it will be a new and exciting chapter in U.S History. So be fair, give Palin some credit (no matter which party you may favor)

  • Posted By: vallihi @ 09/05/2008 1:20:15 PM

Comment: As a partisan Democrat Howard Fineman supports Liberal candidates and slams Republicans repeatedly. Those of us who are Republicans expect nothing less, but what does Howard say about Gov Palin being the first Republican Vice Presidential candidate ??? Zip.
Just for the record Obama is the first half black/half white candidate to run for the Presidency from either
party on a major ticket.. If he were white, he would not qualify for such a high honor. Despite his black father, it was his white grandparents who welcomed him into their home in Hawaii. The raised him until he went away to college, but his community service in Chicago was in the black community. Has he ever performed community service in poor white communities?
He established his credentials among the black community as a path to high office.
Let us see what comes of his candidacy, but Mr. Fineman , a little praise for Gov. Palin is long overdue!

Comment: Not taking sides? laughable. His nomination is historic not because he is black, because never in American history has a party nominated someone who is friends with so many unsavory characters in such a short life. His good friends, self described homegrown terrorist, non-repentant (Bill Ayers), convicted criminals (Tony Rezko) and racist Preacher (who Obama modeled his life after) is beyond troubling. His refusal to release important papers is not change, but politics as usual. . Historical indeed.

Comment: HOWARD FINEMAN'S BEST QUOTE YET:

"If you read me on a regular basis, you know that I do my best not to take sides."

How can you write that and look in your children's eyes? We read your blog. We can document your not at all subtle taking sides. Is this really the best you can do? How about a little disclosure that you've been traveling with the Obama camp -- even on his world tour? It's comments like your that give our website so much traffic. Thanks for not making me read the whole blog. Five paragraphs in was enough. Keep up the good work!

ps. Walter Cronkite would never have had to stipulate: "I do my best not to take sides". He would have let his words speak for him. And yours have spoken loud and clear: I love Obama and I am not man enough, journalist enough, ethical enough to write a disclaimer. Bias is bas enough...not admitting to it is worse.

    Comment: The Best Candidate

True, Obama???s nomination is historical. It appears the country, and the Democrats in particular, were ready to nominate a black man, and that may be the essence and the allure of the Obama candidacy. Sen. Obama is a marvelous speaker, but his experience is thin and he has almost no record to speak of. He does not have a distinguished legislative record in the US or the Ill Senates. Moreover, he has taken highly controversial positions on the ???Born Alive??? legislation, proposing care be withheld from infants born alive of botched abortions, a practice rejected by both the US and Ill governments subsequently. Obama has close associations with racist minister Rev. Wright, terrorist and Pentagon bomber William Ayers, and convicted criminal Tony Rezko. Clearly, Barack Obama is not qualified by experience or judgment to be President. Let???s hope history making does not overcome rational thought.

Comment: The Democratic Party however was not ready to nominate the most qualified candidate because she is a woman. And Obama voted against the wishes of the Illinois Chapter of NOW. He doesn't have a 100% voting record. In fact, he prefers "present". And if you're interested all his legislation as an Illinois senator came in his last year courtesy of Emil Jones. His son is going to be an absolute disaster but the Daley Machine sanctions nepotism.

Comment: I did not see race as the intended theme in the program that led up to Obama???s speech. What I did see was a review of some of the events that made last night possible for Barack Obama.

I believe his premise center around the thought that this country needed to be reminded of some of the struggles of the past before it could gain the confidence to trend new ground. There are many who feel that Omba???s journey is an unobtainable dream, He had to remind everyone that the same thing was said of the Civil Rights Movement and going to the moon.

If this country can rise above the old rhetoric that was meant to keep us divided, I believe the possibilities for ending the war, economic growth and a positive standing among other nations under an Obama & Biden administration are endless.

Comment: Dare270. I think that you are stretching Obama's greatness just a tad. Come in out of the sun and relax. As far as America being destroyed it hasn't been. Sure we have several problems. However, the economy is showing some signs of turning around. Incidentally, taxation as Obama has advocated earlier in the year is not the way to fix an ailing economy anyhow. As far as change, it seems that Obama still likes to be cryptic in what this change is going to be. Finally, why should we suck up to the international community. I frankly don't care what the European Community thinks. In many poor countries in sub Saharan Africa, people have great respect for America. Obama and pacifism is not the answer.

Comment: McCain's choice of Sarah Palin for his running mate is the social equivalent of putting women back in the kitchen, b arefoot and pregnant. She is a token, for window dressing the GOP's real interest in nominating her - to drill in Alaska. Big whoop.

  • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/29/2008 12:12:34 PM

Comment: You think McCain's choice of Palin will focus on women's issues? Haha. that's a huge laugh.

Here is what someone wrote in comments on the Washington Post website today:

Sarah Palin is in no way, shape or form anything of the stature and experience of Hillary Clinton. Most of her supporters will gladly vote for the Obama-Biden ticket. A formidable team, with complementary skills and capabilities, who inspire courage, optimism and respect around the world.

Contrast that with a 72-year-old man whose health is not robust, coupled with a 44-year old church lady with five kids and ZERO overseas travel, no foreign policy credentials. Guess who will be calling all the shots? McCain!

We will be the laughing stock among our enemies - easy target for picking off our president and allowing a totally shallow, inexperienced church lady to become our President.

All for the sake of the Religious Right and the option to drill in Alaska. Once again, the GOP putting us in jeopardy with a misjudged choice and greed to appease the major oil companies.
    _________________

McCain-Palin will be a disaster. Nobody in their right minds will vote for an aging President coupled with a token female who's only there to allow drilling in ANWR. She won't champion equal pay for equal work, women's rights or anything remotely connected to Hillary Clinton's platform/interests.

She will be another Church Lady. Where is Dana Carvey? He did such a good job on Bush Sr.

      Comment: Washington Post?

"Palin is in no way, shape or form anything of the stature and experience of Hillary Clinton"

Check the back issues when they wrote that Sen Clinton had no experience and was basically Bill's first lady wife. They would bash whatever female and whatever person opposes Obama. And how credible is a rag that writes: "44 year old church lady" and never mentions the word Governor? Does the Washington Post think articles such as this: "inspire courage, optimism and respect around the world"? And what of the person quoting it?

Comment: Notrouble. I think that you are stretching it quite a bit regarding McCain's health problems. The last that I heard is that McCain was given a clean bill of health. He hasn't had any problems with melanoma as of late so you might want to be a little more factual. As far as age, Biden is no spring chicken himself, so don't make McCain's age an issue. Also, I haven't heard but has your guy Obama quit smoking yet? I hope that he has because that is also a big health risk. As far as being inspiring, Obama is only inspirational to Obamists. Many Americans are finding out that Obama is just a typical political hack who sounds good with teleprompters all around him. Yet when he answers questions we get good answers: 57 states, taking an asthmatic to a breathalizer. Obama did make these references

Comment: If McCain is so great, why is it that the GOP never picked him in 26 years as their nominee?

He's their second or third choice, representing the dregs of their party's talent - they have no more talent to offer, and Sarah Palin is a risky choice. Very risky. She has never even set foot out of the USA, so ZERO foreign policy experience. She has five kids, one with down's syndrome, so her true interests may be compromised and rightfully so. She is scary in that if she became our President, she has nothing to qualify her and she is only there to get drilling in ANWR. That is her sole purpose, and McCain's sole interest in putting her as his VP. Plus she appeals to the Christian geeks among our population (some of them, not all). She won't be for women's rights - she's just window dressing for the GOP who have no good candidates to offer to the American people but the DREGS of the barrel.

Comment: Notrouble. To even make an issue out of Palin's child with Down's Syndrome shows what a simpleton that you really are. As far as risky, Obama himself is about as risky as you can get. Example: 57 states, taking an asthmatic to a hospital and hook him up to a breathalizer (this is good if you are drunk but not when you have problems breathing). Talking to rogue dictators with no preconditions. Having no energy plan other than airing up your tires. Acting embarased about Americans when they go to Europe and all they can say is "merci bocoups" when I am not sure that Obama can speak a foreign language shows that Obama is not fit to lead.

Comment: MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS A REPUBLICAN

I had a "DREAM (nightmare)" of what the Country might be under Obama.

There will be a new national Anthem to include Black nationalism.
Maybe a new Flag, new coins, currency.
All Americans travelling overseas, will be required to know a second
language before they are allowed to board the plane. Pledges to the
Flag is banned as it may offend certain religion like Islam.

CNN and MSNBC will play 24 hours of only positive news on Obama. Fox
news is shut down. No criticism allowed.
Patriotism, Pin Wearing and waving the American Flag will be a thing
of the Past. Obama surrenders the sovereignty of this country to the
U.N. Obama will visit Iran, Cuba, North Korea etc to beg their
forgiveness for the so called crimes that past US Administration
    carried out.
J Wright, Farakahan, Ayers, the Chicago mob, all will have high
important post advising Obama and policy matters must get their seal
    of approval.
Billions and Trillions of our Tax money will be given to third world
countries to buy their love and forgiveness for us. Remember, in
Obama vision,it is important for the World to Love us.

Oil will be so, so short in supply that there will be more cyclist on
the roads than cars. USA will become China of the 1980's.
Taxes, will be so high that all business will have closed and the
only job available will be to those who carry a Obama Party Card.
All across, America, people will be forced once a month to attend
rallies at Stadium singing praises and hearing sermons from KING
    OBAMA.
School children are forced to read both his books and call Obama
    "Dear Leader"
People who do not faint at his rallies are charged with the crime of
    not being a Obamots.

This nation will turn backward into, prehistoric mode with no Coal
plants, no nuclear plants, no oils rigs etc as it sickens Americans
and especially the World. Remember, they need to love us.

Thank god I woke up and broke into a cold sweat. it dawned on me, why
on earth would anyone consider voting for Obama. If he was not
affiliated with any Party, would anyone really vote for him based on
his experience, his friendship with J Wright, sat thru this militant
Black theologian Church, with Black value system for 20 years, Ayers,
Rezko etc. Obama claims to be a Christian, yet never showed when he
was baptised, or even has a Christian name. Why would he still be
want to be known by his Muslim name?

Don't forget China is placing 25,000 automobiles onto their streets EACH DAY EVERY WEEK PER MONTH YEARLY. Now, how does that equate to the Global Warming Propaganda and Green Solutions?

It is going to be so nice to have a president who actually understands the problems with America and how to fix them. Our country will be on the fast track to recovery from the Bush 8 year fiasco that is sending this country on a downward spiral to destruction.
I cannot believe people are actually thinking of voting for McBush, you like high gas prices and soaring inflation, our economy going to hell, us losing our power in the international global politics, and a government overtaken with right wing conservatives who only look out for the wealthy.

    No more McBush 08

Comment: Mr. Fineman: Yes, it was a historic day for many to see Obama elevated to the Dem nominee. But, once again, we are mowed over by the media blitz of identity politics...of race and gender before anything else. And, one again, the false image of the Democratic Party being the only party of Diversity. Tell that to Colin Powell, Condelesa Rice, and the many, many other folks of all colors and ethnicities, and different genders that have or are currently serving under a Republican administration. This issue is a red-herring, proprogated for pure political reasons by the Dems, but unfortunately, so too by too many of the media. It's a sad joke that we are forced time and time again to listen to a myth that only serves to further divide our country. Just look at the posts on this blog that spew ridiculous statements such as Republicans don't care about women, or black people. We certainly all can and should complain about Politicians looking out for only their own butts at our expense, but the notion that only the Dems are looking out for diversity and "the little guy" is utter nonsense.

Comment: Ok Mr. Fineman, we all will remember this historic day when a black man was the nominee for his party. Now we need to move on. We are not going to elect Barack Hussein Obama president just because he is black. Is being black a new qualification to the presidency of the USA? The answer is NO. s So let's stop play favoritism, lets be real journalists and stop conning the American people into voting for an unqualified man just because of his race. Let's stop playing the race card and the poor people against the richs card. This is America, we all wants to be succesful and we are not envious of people who works hard to make the American dream. This is not Cuba, China or communist Russia where we take form the oneswho work hard and give it to the lazy ones. We do not hate people just because their are richs. We are not talking grassroot liberatyion church concept here. Only in America that Bill Gates can be billionaire by working hard and starting from nothing. Do I hates Bill gates because he is rich certainely not. He inspires me into trying to be the best that I can be. The idea of denigrating beople just because he or she has money is a dangerous concept whose root is from communism. We certeinly needs change in the US. But is Barack Hussein Obama is the change that we need. The answer is categorically NO! We do not need a Hugo Chavez in the US. We do not need a class warfare in the US. This rethoric is very dangerous and will lead to the fall of the US. However, you leftist liberals in the media want the fall of America. You want a new world order in whcih there is no America. You are not American citizen but rather Citizens of the World, the new World. I am black and I will not be voting for Obama because as a patriotic American woman and as a nationalist, I put my country first, before any race, gender, age or creed. I want the best more qualified person to be the commander in chief and this person is not Obama. As a true American, I do not trust Barack Obama's judment due to his questionable association. I want to see if Obama is a legitimate American, but Obama does not want to release his birth certificate. You see, I cannot vote for a communist like Obama in spite of him being a black man with mixed heritage just like my 14 years old son.

He appealed to everyone - left out nobody - and spoke so ELOQUENTLY and INTELLIGENTLY that I find it hard to believe we wouldn't elect him in November -- it is just impossible not to like and respect and admire this wonderful candidate - a once in a lifetime politician - whose brilliance is only enhanced by his dedication to the plight of our fellow citizens.

There is nobody else but Obama to elect as our leader, as far as I'm concerned. There is nobody else in the whole country who could possibly hold a candle to him and his wife Michelle.

An excellent convention! Superb spirit and wonderful talented leadership - very encouraging.

Out with the old, in with the NEW!!! I'm ready for change - and only hope even 30% of it could come to pass in Congress. That would be a significant achievement and worthy of America's rekindled "promise" that we've left by the wayside for so many years.

A day when America's first politician of African-American heritage accepted the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. It was reminiscent of the spirit of change and American pride exuded during the times of the late Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.
