If you didn't have a reason to vote Democratic in the general election, John McCain just gave you one. What other party would have the nerve to put forth a candidate this unqualified and unvetted, and ask the entire world to take their word that she's qualified. After spending 18 mnths trashing Obama for being too new and untested. The rest of the planet, not just Americans have to be shaking their heads in disbelief.

As an American I'm appalled, as a woman I'm insulted. Talk about a lack of judgement. This tactic by the RNC goes beyond political partisanship to win an election, it borders on reckless endangerment of a nation.

While already old news, this article turned out to be prophetic in ways Alter didn't anticipate. With the headlines trumpetting Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy, there are suspicions that Bristol Palin is not in fact five-months pregnant but instead delivered a child in April of this year, the child named Trig claimed to be Sarah Palin's.

Mainstream media sources have revealed that:
    1) In March of this year, Sarah Palin first announced her "pregnancy" one month before the child was born. Friends and coworkers had been unaware of it, and she had not looked pregnant. It was only after the announcement that Sarah Palin's public appearances suggested that she was pregnant.
    2) Bristol Palin was out of school for five months (allegedly due to mononucleosis) at the time Trig was born.
    3) Sarah Palin was at a Texas conference in April when she claims her "water broke". She subsequently delivered a speech to the conference, then traveled to a backwoods hospital in Wasilla Alaska (where she was mayor and has great influence) to "deliver".
    4) Photos of Bristol Palin in late 2007 show that she, not her mother, appeared to be pregnant.

I agree that 17-year-old Bristol Palin should be off-limits, but Sarah Palin, as vice-presidential candidate, gets no such free pass.

If she has deceived the American people by claiming her daughter's child is her own, and covered up that falsehood by saying that her daughter is now pregnant, we deserve to know. Sarah Palin's willingness to expose her daughter and her family to such a media spotlight shows abominable judgment and morality.

Why is the McCain camp sending a large group of "vetters" to Alaska now - to get more information about Palin or to dispose of the evidence against her?????

    • Posted By: jon-jon alter @ 09/02/2008 3:05:05 PM

hello barry blogger. didn't you get your master's memo? The Palin family is off limits. Aren't you still getting paid?

      • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 09/02/2008 3:32:41 PM

He said the Palin family is off limits, not Palin's mis-guided notion that abstinence-before-marriage is the only sex education that should be taught in schools.

How I do love the irony!

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 09/02/2008 2:51:33 PM

I had the same question - what is the point in vetting her now? It's too late - McCain picked her and he is going to have to live with the good and the bad.

    Quantity or Quality?

I find this article disingenuous as the author rejects Palin as inexperienced while failing to apply the same logic and standards to Obama. Moreover, when required to make a crucial decision, Gov Palin has made incredibly good choices, while Obama's choices have proven to be poor. Palin - abolished state income tax and sales taxes, pushed through $40billion TransCanada pipeline, reformed Oil Conservation Commission, refused "Bridge to Nowhere???, chose to bear and raise a child with Down Syndrome. Obama ??? chose the racist Rev Wright as his spiritual and personal mentor, terrorist and Pentagon bomber Bill Ayers as political ally, allowed Tony Rezko to buy his home for him, opposed the Surge, preventing medical care to born alive babies from botched abortions during ???Born Alive??? legislative herarings??? Need we say more?

It is not the quantity of key decisions, but the quality of the decisions made. Palin???s have out-shown Obama???s clearly.

State income and sales tax were abolished in 1980 - long before Palin was Govenor.

Palin supported the bridge to nowhere until it became politically untennable.

Chose to bear a child with Down Syndrome - I don't think she chose to have a child with Down Syndrome.

Need we say more? I think you need to start by saying something.

Apparently, she will hike her skirt as does her daughter - one with a baby the other with one the way. Great examples of Republican leadership and values. Drop trouser, hike skirt just keep the baby but hte same ole politics in Washington. McCain is like Bush, rely on what I say and not how I act or what I do.

Prediction Market Starts Betting On Chance That Palin Will Withdraw From Ticket

The Intrade prediction market has opened trading on whether "Sarah Palin [is] to be withdrawn as Republican VP nominee before 2008 presidential election." At 8:55 am, Tuesday morning, the market is selling the prediction at 18 a share and rising. That means 18 percent of traders think there is a chance that Palin will be removed from the ticket.

Intrade predicted Joe Biden would be Barack Obama's running mate in August and its traders were also correct about every Senate race in 2006. It fell flat in predicting a Democratic majority.

Whoever is in the White House does make a difference. It isn't only the president, but the people around him. If they reflect the views of corporate America, we can expect that tax breaks will continue to go to the rich; that regulations on bankers and polluters will be minimum; that the insurance companies will continue to profit while millions go without health care; that the US constitution, Geneva Convention and international treaties will be disregarded; that the Supreme Court will be packed with conservatives; that jobs will go overseas; that prisoners will rot in Guantanamo; that the infrastructure will crumble; that college will be only for children of the wealthy; that the ecology will suffer; that veterans will be ignored; that we will treat the
peoples of the world with contempt; that we will persuade by intimidation and guns; and that one day we will be broke, when our Chinese bankers call in their markers.

Obama did not pick someone from a swing state and he did not pick someone who was his best friend. Obma picked someone who had run against him for President, someone who had over 30 years of experience, someone who would comfrotable and easily take over Presidential duties if need be. More importantly someone who is known and admired by all the leaders of the world. Obama thought about who what candidate would be best for the country, not what candidate would bring in the most votes. That is what Vice Presidents are all about and that is what we should be looking for. Perhaps the Vice President doesn't make a big impact on the overall election but in this case is should. John McCain is 73 and the oldest person to ever run for President. A President of that age should have considered this and there were plenty of really qualifired Republicans who could have been "on spot" ready if need be. There is no comparison to the readiness of Joe Biden and dangerouly unreadiness of Sarah Palen should one of them have to assume the Presidency. The population of Alaska, the budget of the Alaskan Governor, the staff of the Govenor of Alaska, etc,, etc. is smaller than most major cities in the country. Let's get real here..........

Pretty cowardly to remove these sexist lines without explaining or apologizing. NEWSWEEK, you have no soul.

"The balance between work and family, always a ticklish issue, will be brought into bold relief by the fact that the Palins' fifth child, Trig, was born with Down syndrome in April. Many voters will wonder whether Palin should undertake the rigors of the vice presidency (and perhaps the presidency) while caring for a disabled infant."

As a woman, I am insulted to think that thr Republican Party think they can pick a female VP and assume I will vote for them because of it. Well, if they think that, they are a far cry from reality. If they think they can pull the Hilary women, they are wrong again. The issues Hilary stood for do not come any where near Ms. Palin's view of life and life issues. I am more determined now to vote Democratic and let the Republicans plan to backfire in their faces.

    • Posted By: jon-jon alter @ 09/02/2008 2:52:28 PM

It was beyond insulting, wasn't it? As if a Sen Clinton supporter would vote to make a Republican the highest ranking female politician in history and possibly the first female president.

The issue shoud not be Govenor Palen herself as she is just a pawn for Senator McCain. She is a distraction from his gaffe's, inability to make his vicious attacks against Obama resonate and to change his message to mimic Obama's campaign for change. The real issue is Senator McCain is ready to potentially put the United States in harms way with a candidate who could well become President at some point in the next few years who he did not even know. Her vetting was non existent and he made sure there was too little time to do a thourough vetting. Obama has been vetted consistently over the past eight years as he ran for Illinois State Senator and the United States Senate. He has been scrutinized over the past 15 months more intently as has his wife and family history. It is evident that Senator McCain would puts winning this election ahead of ensuring his second in commancd is ready to lead. His arguments over her experience are ineffective and absurd and I shudder to think how absolutely ridiculous this country looks to other countrries and their leaders at this time. Osama Bin Laden and Putin must still be laughing at this turn of events. Shame on John McCain, the Republican party leaders and voter man or women that would accept the Govenor (no matter on how lileable she may be) for this vital position at this precarious point in time. There is too much at stake in America today. Our economy, the state of our Planet, our security and the future of our children is at stake. The women who supported Hillary and the women who didn't are too smart to be seduced by such a dumb and "Rove" snarky attempt as this.

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 09/02/2008 2:46:54 PM

I think this continues to illustrate just how much control the religious right has over the republican party. McCain wanted to select Lieberman. I think that would have been in interesting choice. But Lieberman's pro-choice stance was deemed too much of a risk.

Presumably McCain's team did the math and determined that Palin would attract more voters from the religious right that Lieberman would attract from independents and conservative democrats.

I guess we'll see what happens in November.

  • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 09/02/2008 2:42:21 PM

I think Palin is a great choice.

Candidly, I was a little concerned about Obama selecting Biden. I understand why Obama did it, but since Biden comes from Delaware, he is not in a position to give Obama a big boost in a critical swing state like Ohio, Pennsyvania or Florida.

I was concerned that McCain would pick someone from one of those states, which would really help him in the electoral account. I am glad he didn't.

I don't think the Vice Presidential candidate is going to have a big impact on the overall election for Obama or McCain. Interestingly, Obama's selection of Biden sort of deflates his whole anti "politics as usual" stance and at the same time McCain's selection of Palin sort of deflates his whole experience is important stance.

I think the VP selections ended up being a wash.

Ms. Palin said she is against big oil, lobbyist, corruption and the good ole' boys network. That's describing Mr. McCain. And Levi Johnson, the 18 hockey "don't want any babies" player who drinks and swears a lot is not someone you want immediately in your family - baby or not.

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 09/02/2008 2:31:22 PM

Yeah, I kind of questioned the wisdom of that as well. It is unfortunate that she got pregnant, and I respect her for holding herself accountable for that and keeping the baby (assuming it was really her choice). It is not going to be an easy path for her - put many woman across the country have to deal with the same thing and she has a supportive family. I am sure she will be fine.

I am just not sure how marrying a dunder-headed numb-nuts is going to help her situation. Odds are it will just end in divorce. Personally, I think she is better of single.

Well it seems the democrats are not happy with any thing and will go to the ends of the earth to discredit people. Sarah palin???s 17y/o daughter is pregnant but so is 2 million other unmarried teens in America! But because its Mrs. Palin???s kid that makes her a bad parent or not in touch with her children???. I guess all the other parents of the other 2 million are bad as well! But wait her husband got a d.u.i. 22 yrs ago and had an accident that caused some property damage so he???s an awful person according to the liberal democrats! It makes no difference that Joe biden is a long time big government spender all the while he claims to be a regular guy! He says I ride Amtrak everyday to work and home he fails to mention that that Amtrak ride costs 97 dollars a day! That???s about the amount of money that 25% Americans make day (they are the low income earners but before taxes they are considered middle class according to the government which is a bunch of bull in my opinion that???s at poverty level!) and he spends it on Amtrak yeah he a regular Joe! And barrack Obama well he???s no angel either he???s got some pretty bad bill???s hidden in his closet not to mention his admitted marijuana and cocaine use years ago but lets not talk about that says the liberal media lets talk about mr.palin???s d.u.i. Or the 17 y/o???s pregnancy this liberal bias in the media is getting a little aggravating but I think that the American people will see that this whole thing is leaning to far left and it will back fire in obama???s face costing him the chance at being the leader of the free world! It???s a shame that our election process has come to this! as you can see all the dirt being dug up is from the move-on.org idiots who wants those morons running the country they have obama in thier poket he's thier hand picked choice !

Like McCain you don't get it either. Your party is the one who set the so called standards not the Democratic Party. How quickly you all forget that the Dems are the heathens that needed for God to rain on our parade. YOU Right Wing Conservatives are the biggest Hypocritcs on the face of the earth and you VP Pick Proves it.

Have been a republican all my life and I have never been so disappointed with a vice president ial pick such as Palin. Mr. McCain just shot himself in the foot. This year I am voting democratic, I am fed up with the republican party and their tactics. The only reason he picked Palin is because she is a woman and no other reason. Does he think that American women are stupid? I am completely embarrassed to say i am a republican.

    • Posted By: smilingagain @ 08/29/2008 8:15:48 PM

Well quite honestly we embarrassed to have you as a Republican. And by the way, it isn't " voting democratic" (that is a form of government) it is voting Democrat which is basically the same as voting for Socialism in America.

      • Posted By: RiversideWarrior @ 09/02/2008 1:39:36 PM

Being Republican is somewhat like being in a strange place now that they are prepared to support someone that was a member of another political party in the mid-1990's that was advocating for a vote on Alaskan independence.

  • Posted By: naturallygreen @ 08/29/2008 7:46:55 PM

"Desperate times - desperate measures". I thought that John McCain was a seasoned smart man, scratch politician. Can you realy trust this guy's judgement now. How can you compare her to a Hilary, this is just commical . Granted shes attractive, energetic and what else. ...... ???? THIS IS EMBARASSING!

    • Posted By: RiversideWarrior @ 09/02/2008 1:34:45 PM

You forgot that she was runner-up Miss Alaska 1984 and was a member of a political party in the mid-1990's for two years that was/is dedicated to holding a vote on whether Alaska should become an independent country (maybe she should be running for Alaska "President"??)

  • Posted By: grej @ 08/29/2008 8:03:36 PM

This is now "kick the woman down week". You know what is embarrassing? Gov. Palin
has actually run something, even if Alaska is a small state. What has Barack done?
Community organizer. Gov. Palin is head of the Alaska National Guard. She can shoot
a gun, is a hunter and member of the NRA .She makes Barack look like a woose.
And as far as her being a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Empty suit Obama
will be the President! At least Gov. Pali will have some on the job training unless
McCain passes away on his first day in office.

    • Posted By: RiversideWarrior @ 09/02/2008 1:29:53 PM

Given the lower IQ and lack of education associated with the majority of GOP voters, the selection of Palin will do little to dissuade them from "staying the course". However, for this independent voter and many others this choice really gives us pause for thought. Think about it, just 20 months ago this person was the Mayor of Wasilla City, pop. 5,500 (and maybe some bears and caribou thrown in for good measure). I can think of a few municipalities in the US that can provide a greater degree of executive-level experience than that offered by Wasilla City (from Austin to Tallahassee). She is also extremely conservative, even on issues of concern to women such as the right to choose, birth control and gender equity on equal pay between men and women for performing the same jobs. In short, she is no Hillary. Do I want the Mayor of Wasilla City a heartbeat away from being my next President if the old guy (he turns 73 next August) keels over? Any voter, man or woman, would be pretty crazy to vote for such a ticket given the risks involved and it says a great deal about McCain's lack of good judgment on making important decisions.
