This has to be the most myopic piece of horse patooey that i've read in Newsweek in at least a day or two. Point number one, Palin has more real world experience than the MTV/media created Democratic PRESIDENTIAL candidate and is a breath of fresh air when you look at the Bidens of the world who are giving Congress a 9% approval rating. I suspect Jonathon Alter is peeved that the Republicans chose not to smear a woman in a primary campaign, ignore a womans 18 million votes, and then demean other women by suggesting that Palin will fail. To the contrary, in most instances you don't have to do anything to become a senator except be wealthy, kiss the butts of your party, be a lawyer, or have a family name like Kennedy.or Daley, and HER approcal rate in her home state is about 10 times that of Congress. She will ear Biden alive, get the PUMA as well as most of the woman vote in this country, as welll as that of the the 30-40,000,000 hunters, fishermen, and gun owners in this country-and probably that of the military. The Dems can attack all they want because they know they don't have any more chance of winning in November as McGovern, Dukakis, Kerry, or Gore.

    Two Questions for McCain:

    1) If Sarah Palin had been a male, with the exact same qualifications, etc. that she has, would you have chosen him?

    2) When running against George W. Bush for the Republican nomination, in a debate with Alan Keyes and Buch, you stated that the government should not absolutely forbid ab abortion in the case of rape, incest, or possible severe physical damage to the pregnant woman. Bush agreed, and you then demanded that he work to change the Republican platform, which called for abortion to always be illegal, no matter what. You called Bush a hypocrite for not attempting to make that change. Now you are the candidate. Will you have the change made, or have you now adopted the "abortion should always be illegal" view of your running mate?

see the video of the debate:

I don't know if I should be insulted that the McCain campaign thinks we're all that stupid, or terrified that THEY are that stupid and could possibly end up in the White House.

Three strikes, you're out, My Friend (TM).

You giddily accepted endorsements by Parsley and Hagee to pander to the Evangelicals and have since had to backtrack when it came out that they were nut jobs. You just rolled out Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee as the face of your Hispanic Family Values tour (and don't even realize yet how poorly that will play out - por Dios, que alguien le explica que significa gasolina!) Now you've picked a woman with the thinnest of resumes hoping to pander to the female vote. On a professional level, she doesn't have the education or experience to be President. On a personal level, what kind of mom puts that kind of ambition ahead of her family when she has a four month old with special needs? As a professional woman and mom, I would be circling my family wagons and making sure that all my kids were OK with such a huge adjustment and just spending as much time as I could nurturing my new baby. I guess that's why the Republican slogan is "Country First" and why I am a Democrat.

As a single working mom, I totally support John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate.

What a joke. Like Mr. Zoid said, there are a numbers of smart articulate experienced women in the Republican ranks that have the knowledge to be a heartbeat away . McCain just killed his chances.

Whether you need the help or not, Newsweek seems perfectly willing to give it.

You guys are putzes. If some rag wasn't paying you to spew liberal crud and criticism of all-things-republican, you're opinion would be stuck in the audience of the "cubicle next door". There's a big difference between a Presidential candidate lacking experience, versus a Vice-Pres candidate lacking experience. One is IMMEDIATELY unqualified, and the other will unlikely ever have to prove the fact that she's fit to lead. The O'Bama ticket can't escape the fact that it's ticket would be stronger if O'Bama was the VP in support of someone who has substance AND experience. Yada yada yada.

The media infuriates me with their obvious bias toward Barack Obama! If he had chosen a Governor, with Sarah Palin's qualifications the media would think that it was great. Also, if Mrs. Paulin would have been a Mr. there would have been no reference to the 5 children, one of whom has Down's Syndrome, possibly being a hinderance to that candidate performing his responsibilities. I an sick to death of hearing the media's opinions----just report the facts, and let us form our own opinions!!!

Word on the street is "Pretty good choice!" -What a Trump!

Boy, I am sorely disappointed in the vehemence directed to Sara Palin. Let's stop trashing her until we really can make an intelligent descision, rather that one that is based on a lack of knowledge and obvious hatred. No matter who McCain picked the Obama supporters would have found negative and hateful things to say. I am glad McCain picked a non Washington DC person. It is a true opportunity for fresh insight and new ideas.

once again, liberal media-ites take a good ,lovely, qualified VP candidate that is a woman and make her as a pawn in MCcain s` quest for the presidency. She is the face of REAL feminism. You media elitists that are unashamedly in bed with th d emocrats/ liberals, will charaxterize hillARY as a pioneer, a trailblazer, qualified, surely destined for the Presidency . Meanwhile she never was anything of the sort. Why do you thnk she will fail? They will destroy Obama in the fall.

obvious who reads Newsweek and MSN and where their votes lay...still nothing new

  • Posted By: cerrojim @ 08/29/2008 7:11:15 PM

Markky, Mark. We Dems don't need Newsweeks help. Old John is helping out just fine.

  • Posted By: Markk3441 @ 08/29/2008 7:07:49 PM

Newsweek might as well just come out and say 'we will do everything we can to elect Obama' these days...

They seem to have long ago given up any semblance of neutrality.

"Fair the well, OLD John McCain, Fair the well, I'm gone."

John, you could have picked a more experience religious righty to help you out with the base.

Trophy wife, Trophy VP. Thanks, John.

Once the shock of the GOP actually nominating a woman wears off...the real campaign will start and we will see what Ms Palin is made of. If Obama/Biden are smart they will ignore the fact she is a woman and debate her on the issues. She comes from the right-wing Evangelical branch of the Republican party (the same ones that brought us George Bush) so Im curious to know how she feels about the Bush presidency? Does she think he is a great president? Do her policies resemble hers? How long has her family profitted from working for Big Oil? Does she opposed abortion even in the case of child rape? Does she think Creationism is science? (none of this wishy washy 2 viewpoints rhetoric). The press needs to get on board and ask the same tough questions they throw at all the other candidates. Just ask Hillary!

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 08/29/2008 6:39:52 PM

Its got nothing to do with the fact that Palin is female, its the fact that she has no idea what she is doing out there; she said last month on camera, "come on, im a hockey mom from Alaska, do you really think its a possibility? I don't, so i can just focus on my state of Alaska:)". 72yrs old as of today, 72 with prior health problems, and if you think that America is going to look at this young lady as a viable option to deal with Putin, and Iran, and China, just to name a few, than you are out of your mind; and luckily, we will never know, cause the race ended today for John McCain.

      • Posted By: shortjames @ 08/29/2008 6:50:37 PM

I totally agree with your position that gender is irrelevant. That is the point of my post, dont make the mistake of thinking that just because she is a woman means she isnt far-right wing. I suspect McCain obviously chose her over more qualified GOP women (like say Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Meg Ryan) hoping her youth and attractiveness would act as a foil for her radical political beliefs.

        • Posted By: shortjames @ 08/29/2008 6:54:34 PM

Er.."Meg Ryan"...LOL at self. Meg WHITMAN

  • Posted By: RO in Reno @ 08/29/2008 5:58:07 PM

"Hail Sarah Pass"is probably the best description I've seen, McCain and Co have shown facination with the success of HRC, and the anger of her supporters that seems more vindictiveness than any thing else, Some mcCain supporters have even suggested HRC would actually vote for McCain she won't of course She does love America and has the best interests of people at heart.

But I suspect we'll see a lot of Palin in the next eight years, she'll be groomed for 2016, if nothing else even the Republicans have recgognized the fact America is ready for a woman president

    • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 08/29/2008 6:50:11 PM

There's nothing facinating about Hillary! Democrats agree judging from the primaries! And her campaign of Americans Suck First from Bill is nothing to inspire or shape anyones' thought! Biden is the plagerist of thoughts, ideas and words! And he refused to permit crime control until everyone agreed with his silly gun control schemes. (What a goof ball!).
The recommendation to McCain was he better get his self a strong conservitive VP. And play to the GOPs conservitive base! He has done so...and he has done well!
