In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address.

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

This is too much. You obama bloggers have crossed the line. Does anyone not find these comments offensive as a human being? two bloggers talking about a mother's desire to have her son slaughtered "fun times in the Palin family!" to make room for the next illegitimate child?

Comment: "So she's encouraging her son to join a baseless cause and possibly get slaughtered at 18...fun times in the Palin family! But it's all rifles and guns and god in 'Laska ya'll. Please."

Comment: "Of course she wants him slaughtered...gots to make room for the next illegitimate kid, right?"

And here's what another regular blogger thinks. She blames IMPOSTER for "rehashing" it.

      Posted By: Pia1981 @ 09/04/2008 14:49:27
Comment: "I don't like those comments either, but why rehash it? Why call attention to it again? Very inflammatory."

The level of inhumanity in here is appalling. I'm ashamed to call you my fellow Americans. Go ahead with the personal attacks on me. I'm an adult -- not a pregnant teenage child or a brave young man going to war to keep me safe. You can say it right to my face. It will be more evidence of the lack of human decency by obama supporters.

For a Jr. Senator and a Person as Un-Informed as Sarah & Rudy "Mr.911" Giuliani, who called Obama a "Social Activist" & "He's Done NOTHING..NADA"

The Jr. Senator will PROVE, he's done Much More than What Sarah Palin & R. Giuliani Described & Demeaned last Night !!

    109th Congress

Obama took an active role in the Senate's drive for improved border security and immigration reform. In 2005, he cosponsored the "Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act" introduced by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

He later added three amendments to the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act", which passed the Senate in May 2006, but failed to gain majority support in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In September 2006, Obama supported a related bill, the Secure Fence Act, authorizing construction of fencing and other security improvements along the United States???Mexico border.

President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act into law in October 2006, calling it "an important step toward immigration reform."

Senate bill sponsors Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Obama discuss the Coburn-Obama Transparency Act.

Partnering first with Sen. Dick Lugar (R-IN), and then with Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Obama successfully introduced two initiatives bearing his name. "Lugar-Obama" expands the Nunn-Lugar cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons, including shoulder-fired missiles and anti-personnel mines.

The Lugar-Obama initiative subsequently received $48 million in funding.

The "Coburn-Obama Transparency Act" provides for the web site USAspending.gov, managed by the Office of Management and Budget. The site lists all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward and provides breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract.

In December 2006, President Bush signed into law the "Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act," marking the first federal legislation to be enacted with Obama as its primary sponsor.

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

In August 2005, he traveled to Russia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. The trip focused on strategies to control the world's supply of conventional weapons, biological weapons, and weapons of mass destruction as a first defense against potential terrorist attacks.

While you're at it try to find one example of where barry actually crossed the aisle in the US Senate.

Once again, Alter shows himself to be a blithering idiot! ! If Gov. Palin is poorly suited for the vice presidency, what pray tell is Omama - TOTALLY UNFIT!!! A "community organizer" -like Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton!?!Yes, Obama is a glib speaker, mouthing platitudes and glittering generalities! PLEARE, A;LTER, petroaphy and disappear like the other dinosaurs!!

It seems the MSM was rapt in ecstasy that they missed barry's own sarcasm of McCain.

  • Posted By: T0NY48 @ 09/04/2008 11:23:18 AM

I was wondering how Mr. Alter determined that Governor Palin has little or no knowledge of world events beyond energy matters. Has he had extensive discussions with her, or quesstioned her about world matters? I'm an independent that is not sure I want Governor Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency, but the more I read comments like this, I tend to agree with conservatives that there is a pronounced liberal bias in the media.

A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School

As a member of the Democratic minority in the 109th Congress, he helped create legislation to control conventional weapons and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal funds. He also made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During the 110th Congress, he helped create legislation regarding lobbying and electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism, and care for returned U.S. military personnel. After announcing his presidential campaign in February 2007, Obama emphasized withdrawing American troops from Iraq, energy independence, decreasing the influence of lobbyists, and promoting universal health care as top national priorities.

Later in 2007, Obama sponsored with Kit Bond (R-MO) an amendment to the 2008 Defense Authorization Act adding safeguards for personality disorder military discharges, and calling for a review by the Government Accountability Office following reports that the procedure had been used inappropriately to reduce government costs.

He sponsored the "Iran Sanctions Enabling Act" supporting divestment of state pension funds from Iran's oil and gas industry, and joined Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in introducing legislation to reduce risks of nuclear terrorism.

A provision from the Obama-Hagel bill was passed by Congress in December 2007 as an amendment to the State-Foreign Operations appropriations bill.

Obama also sponsored a Senate amendment to the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide one year of job protection for family members caring for soldiers with combat-related injuries.

After passing both houses of Congress with bipartisan majorities, SCHIP was vetoed by President Bush in early October 2007, a move Obama said "shows a callousness of priorities that is offensive to the ideals we hold as Americans.

"Helped create" "cosponsored" being the operative words. All his legislation in the IL Senate was pushed through in the last year once emil jones decided to "make himself a senator". And you've been called out on the SCHIP and you still leave it in there.

Alter - another piece of crap article. I heard Kos is looking for a blogger who can count. Did you like the Hockey Mom signs?

Alter writes: "He'll win or lose for other reasons." Alter can't stand the idea that his boyfriend could be dragged down by a mere "girl". Therefore any reason will do -- as long as it's not the giant superwoman towering over Captain Arugula.

By the way, Sarah knows how to field dress a pundit. Be afraid little Jon, be very afraid.

If I was going to hire someone to run my company the first thing I would do is look at their education.

Sarah Palin holds a BA in journalism from the University of Idaho, earned with credits from three schools; her grades have not been released
    .
Barack Obama attended Occidental College for two years, and then got his B.A. from Columbia University. He later got his law degree from Harvard Law School (where he became the Harvard Law Review's first black president), graduating magna *** laude. Obama was also a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.

    Enough said Obama 08

Yes. He is Ivy League educated. And yet he couldn't make a decision on when life begins. Said it was above his pay grade.

      Obama 08!

I guess one has to attend liberal elite universities to be qualified for the Presidency or Vice Presidency now. How pathetic you are. As a registered democrat and Hilary supporter I find those comments pathetic. Being President or Vice president has little to do with IQ points or only the intellectual elitist wackos would be allowed to be president.

A president/vice president needs a very large dose of common sense not intellectually elitist left wing views to be succeed in the office. That common sense allows them to choose pragmatically the people that serve in the cabinet and other high government positions.

Clinton was an intellectual but except in his personal sexual proclivities he was pragmatic and sound in who he chose for most government positions and he had the experience of being a governor.

I was very disappointed when Obama chose Biden who is the ultimate Washington Insider and the type of politcal hack who votes 100% party line. Palin is a maverick just like McCain. If we democrats take them lightly because we feel intellectually superior we will again lose the Presidency.

After all is there anyone that needs common sense more than a mother of 5?? As a mother myself I find her compelling and very interesting. She is far more "intersting" than a political hack like Biden

This column is about as prescient as his column yesterday predicting Governor Palin's belly flop. Millions of us are still laughing at that one. This is pretty funny too, though. Must suck to be so publicly humiliated.

    • Posted By: cult followers @ 09/04/2008 6:58:13 PM

He doesn't care he's so caught up in his manlove. alter's been called out on every article and skewered at pro-obama media sites and yet he persists. Journalistic integrity? Andrea Mitchell looked like somebody stepped on her dog last night and Chris chill up my leg Matthews is pouting like a scorned lover. At least Kos obama's unofficial official blog finally got called out on something.

  • Posted By: plb1 @ 09/04/2008 2:52:28 PM

Time will tell whether Sarah Palin will "belly-flop" or whether it will be the media. I'm betting there are a lot of Americans who will decide, as I have, that the media's obvious rush to judgement against Sarah Palin, its blatant attempt to denigrate and discredit her before she was even introduced as the Vice-Presidential candidate, its demand for "answers" from her, before she had a chance to speak to her record in an appropriate public forum, will be viewed as unfair and un-American.

Right wing nut case religious types are not really pro life you are pro fetus. you have no desire to help the child after it is born and their families as they try to make it against all odds. You cut education programs or under fund them you cut housing programs for unwed child bearing young mothers as did your new hero Sara Painlin. you elevate the number of children in the last 8 years from 27 per day to 35 per day who die because of living on the poverty level in this country ( Do the math 8 years = 102200 dead) with the mantra of everyone should be able to fend for themselves. you have no Phuching clue what is happening on the streets. You have no family values except when it is your own family. And you call off limits to any of the press talking or asking questions about your families but your have no problem parading them in front of the country for votes! Your ideas are antiquated at best and your opinion stink of elitness. Your new hero hasn't a clue in the same way your party doesn't. the conventions proved where your party comes from. republican convention attended by 2 to 1 white males as opposed to females. 1.4% were minorities and you couldn't even fill the small capacity venue. democrat convention 44% were minorities and women out numbered males and you couldn't get a seat if you begged borrowed or robbed one in that huge venue. if you think Sara Painlin is going to energies the female vote in this country? Well like I said your ideas are antiquated. But there is one small group you will energies and that is the people who don't give a sh!t about who is running this country and are not paying attention to the campaigns. They will decide at the last minute with the last campaign commercial they like because they don't have a clue.

Omaar, did you watch all of her speech last evening? If so, what do you believe she meant when she said the Rep party was going to storm DC. How can one storm their own party?

Hey, sweet Seej! How are you? I hope you had a good trip last week.

I watched the speech....pretty good speaker this Sarah but so is Obama. I watched most of her speech and have to conclude that to me she sounded like she was doing a celebrity roast. A friend of mine who is a Rep and also watched Sarah, agrees.

This article makes good lining for my bird cage or may be better suited for paper training a puppy. I'll have to go to my doctor's office to get a copy because I certainly won't purchase it. Newsweak would have to pay me to take it. I used to 'attempt' to read Newsweak to obtain a balanced view. Unfortunately...

Jon is misguided yet again...he has his head up his lower orafice again...or he has it up Obama's orafice...but wherever it is, the man-love exhibited here has continued the erosion of objectivity in reporting...

Perhaps Newsweak has given up on being a true journalistic outfit.

The selection of this unknown quanitiy is the act of a desparate man ie political party that faces the likely probability of losing in the November election. The Republican choice to put a woman on the bottom of their ticket is sad and cynical and scary. "Juno" comes home to haunt America. She is a slap in the face to all those so-called "Hilary" Democratic women. Michelle Obama and Hilary Clinton she ain't and we best not get it confused.

  • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 09/04/2008 3:25:18 PM

Funny now Palin is crying sexism (of Course!) but when Sen. Clinton's camp made this claim Palin accused Clinton of being a Whiner.

    Interesting!

  • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 09/04/2008 3:20:22 PM

Those of you who watched Sarah Palin give her speech last evening....please explain to me ( I would prefer a Rep. to do that) exactly what she meant by saying that 'we',( I assume by "we" she meant that she, McCain and the Rep. party), are going to storm DC. They are going to storm their own Republican party, meaning clean-up? hmmmm. I suppose one can say she made a gaffe.
