How much does past experience forecast future presidential performance? The only way of knowing is to wait fifty years. How about a Congressman who had been a big city machine politician after failing as a businessman and whose international experience was limited to a part of a year in France? Can't you imagine the shrill voices of the talking heads on both extremes of the political spectrum if either party were to nominate such a person today? Yet Mr. Truman's leadership resulted in programs that continue to benefit the world today. Today he is acknowledged to be one of our greatest presidents. But, thanks to the Harpies of both the Right and the Left his approval rating was lower than any previous president.
