Also Thursday, Obama took on cable's kingpin, Fox's Bill O'Reilly, in a taped interview his show is stretching across four nights. Not only did Obama take time away from the GOP convention with his Fox appearance, he spoke to a big potential audience: Fox's convention viewership has been bigger than any network.

The two men talked about the Iraq war, dealing with Iran and the war against terrorism.

After the segment, O'Reilly brought two commentators on to ask for an evaluation of their performances. "You both get an 'A' in my book," said Jane Hall, an American University professor.

For Obama, he now avoids having cable news' most popular host criticizing him for not consenting to an interview.

"He's a tough guy, Obama," O'Reilly said. "I looked at him eye to eye, he's not a wimp. He's not a wimpy guy."

Palin is a modern day representation of the type of woman who beat the odds when the country was settled. She is very much like the women who made it here on old boats and then moved the country westward and battled disease and the elements with no medical care, maintained a family, and had mutiple childbirths all in a frequently hostile environment. They were multitask-oriented in desperate survival situations and normally outlived the men and had to carry the full burden of the family long afterwards. She and McCain share a spirit of optimism that is refreshing in this politically charged atmosphere where the other side is broadcasting negative waves and neither Palin nor McCain suffers fools. The task of uniting the country in order to create the synergy in problem solving for which America is famous in crisis situations will be daunting if they are elected. We have the most dysfunctional Congress since the Civil War and a news media with polar opposites that fuels the political divisions in the country. You can see anecdotal evidence of this if you scroll down the discouraging comments on this site - some of which have psychotic hate messages- and wonder if the country will ever find the right balance.

The fact that the GOP convention was in Minnesota just completes the flashback scenario ... 1970 I think it was, Lou Grant hires Mary Richards (after one interview) as associate producer at WJM ... Why? Because she had spunk (even though he hated spunk). Now in 2008, John McCain hires Sarah Palin (after one interview) as his veep candidate ??? for the same reason. Excuse me John, the joke was only funny the first time.

Obama took an active role in the Senate's drive for improved border security and immigration reform. In 2005, he cosponsored the "Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act" introduced by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

FACT: That infrastructure project has not yet been approved by federal regulators. The proposed pipeline would ship natural gas from the Alaska's North Slope to homes and businesses across the United States. In June, the Alaskan legislature, with Palin's prodding, agreed to pay Canadian energy company TransCanada $500 million as an incentive to build the pipeline.

FACT: While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin hired Steven Silver, a former chief of staff for Sen. Ted Stevens, to lobby Congress for earmarks. Wasilla received around $27 million in federal money, about as much as Boise, Idaho. Boise has a population of 200,000 people, compared with Wasilla's 10,000. Earmarked funds went to sewage improvements and improving roads connecting the town to a local ski resort.

As for the Bridge to Nowhere, Palin initially supported using federal funds to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island, which has 50 residents and a small airport.

It was not until the plan was ridiculed that she withdrew her support. Critics contend she still supports using federal money to build a 3.4 mile Road to Nowhere on the island for $26 million -- from the funds for the bridge.

FACT: Soon after entering office, Palin put the state-owned Westwind II jet that her predecessor Frank Murkowski purchased amid much criticism. When the deal fell through with the sole eBay bidder, the plane was sold offline.

Alaskan businessman Larry Reynolds paid $2.1 million for the jet after learning about it from Republican John L. Harris, speaker of the Alaskan House of Representatives.

Palin, as she said, drives herself to work. In July, her Chevy Suburban was rear-ended while driving from Wasilla to her office in downtown Anchorage.

A week later in Berlin, Germany, on July 23, Obama used the word "victory" three times to describe Allied successes during World War II. And in a June speech about the prospect of universal health care, he said Sen. Hillary Clinton "will be central to that victory."

While a state senator in Illinois, he sponsored two contentious bills, one that studied racial profiling by police and another that ordered interrogations in potential death penalty cases to be recorded.

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, was once a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, its officials have said.

News of Mrs Palin's former membership comes as the latest in a string of potentially embarrassing disclosures about her past.

The party has lobbied since the 1970s for the right to hold a referendum on whether Alaska should secede from the United States. Its motto, "Alaska First", Contrasts sharply with the John McCain campaign slogan: "Country First."

BIG NOTE: It seeks "the complete Repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska" and aims to be "self-sufficient" by using profits from Alaskan OIL and GAS RESOURCES. It claims that the vote held in 1958 which led to Alaska becoming the 49th state of the US was CORRUPT and did not offer a PROPER CHOICE.

While it is thought that Mrs Palin officially left the party to become a Republican in 1996, she recorded an address for its convention earlier this year in which she said: "I share your party's vision of upholding the constitution of our great state" and told members to "keep up the good work".

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP), confirmed to ABC News that Mrs Palin and her husband Todd had both been both members and attended at least one party convention.

"When she joined the party our platform was right under her nose," Mrs Clark said. "I can't understand why in God's name she has aligned herself with a candidate who opposes the development of our republic and Alaska's resource wealth," she added.

"As his sentencing nears, pressure is mounting on Tony Rezko to cooperate with federal investigations into some of the highest-profile politicians in the state -- including Gov. Blagojevich.

Two more trials -- one in Chicago next spring, one in Las Vegas -- hover over the Wilmette businessman and onetime prolific political fund-raiser for the governor and BARACK OBAMA.

Tony Rezko was inside the federal courthouse as recently as Aug. 14, sources for the Sun Times say.

Now, sources tell the Chicago Sun-Times that Rezko has been seen at the federal courthouse as many as a dozen times since his June conviction. He's been held since then at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago.

Rezko hasn't had to be back in court since a jury convicted him of corruption charges involving state deals. And his scheduled Sept. 3 sentencing was recently pushed back to Oct. 28".....ONE WEEK BEFORE ELECTION....hmmm...just a coincidence???

Palin's speech just oozed sarcasm. No substance, no issues, just plain sarcasm. What will be interesting is to see how she stands up on issues, against Biden. Being mayor of an Alaskan small town and convincing everyone that your different from Washington doesnt justify anything. She has been deployed to get the right wing(and women) vote because the conservatives werent sure themselves on McCain's pandering over the years.

The hoopla is over and now we are left to contemplate our choices. It would seem that:

If you want an attack dog, as she says, ???a pit bull with lipstick???, a feisty individual waiting to take over, then Sarah Palin will fill the bill. However if you want a Vice President with all that entails, with the appropriate qualifications, capabilities and stature, then Joe Biden superbly meets those requirements.

If you want someone who has flown an airplane, someone with a patriotic and influential military ancestry, someone who is unquestionably patriotic and who has been a heroic POW, someone who has a history of supporting Washington as it is yet who advocates the need for change, someone who admits that his party has ???lost the people???s trust???, someone who challenges the people to create the change, then John McCain answers your needs.

However if you think what is needed is someone with the stamina, the intellect, the compassion and understanding to implement change, someone with the clear thinking, someone experienced in fighting for the average person, someone who won???t just bore you but instead sincerely feels the meaning behind the words, someone who is not only patriotic but capable of and committed to being President for all Americans, then Barack Obama is ready.

In any case, it at least has been very clearly identified and completely admitted by all parties that we desperately need change and that we just can???t have more of the same!

Okay "Nut Job #1" what is your point? Yet another McCain supperter who is so "dumb struck" that your only resort is to use use profanity. Didn't you learn in grade school that those who cuss do so because they lack the ability express themselves.

Write your point and back it up. If you can't do that, I suggest you take a intermediate or remedial Writing class.

On the other hand, you may very well just be in middle school using the word "Du fuss?" Are you serious? If so, stay out of grown folks conversations. You're obviously not ready to engage in these discussions.

McCain may believe that he made a strategic move by chosen this "Pitbull with Lipstick" so to speak, to win H. Clinton supporters when infact he actually p'd many of them off, as well as non-Hilary supporters. This country is concerned about who is going to step in and take on his role as President of the United States in an event that he can not perform this great responsibility. It seems he didn't give this much thought. McCain suffers from serious tunnel vision "Winning the Presidency" . This fact alone convinces me that McCain is not as concerned about the future of this country as Barack Obama is.

I'm going to go online and look for credible, non-biased bio's on Palin. Everything I've read about her thus far is negative and I'm sure they are generated by individuals who oppose her. The only compliment I've read was one she made about herself as a self acclaimed reformer and that can be bad in many ways. I am turned off by the countless jabs she makes Senator Obama. Maybe there are some vendictive Republicans who enjoy watching Obama receive a good tongue lashing; but, many of us who are really are concerned about our futures would like to hear her ideas on how she plans to address the many issues and crisis this country is suffering from. Self acclaimed "Tough Reformer" and crap talking is not going to move many undecided citizens. She only appeals to people who already supports her and McCain. I am also turned off by her cheap shots about how Senator Obama reached out to impoverished communities. The message in this is "These people are not worth MY time" and "Their votes don't mean anything to me". Although this says more than enough about her, I still plan to read up on her.

McCain picked her to win the woman vote after he saw that Obama didn't pick Hillary as his running mate, plain and simple. She will never become president because a woman having any authority over a man runs against Republican Party values. Republicans also believe that homosexuality is against natural law and therefore will not legalize gay marriage. The Christians are too stupid to realize that Republican Party values are based on their interpretation of natural law, not on Biblical morality. This is why evangelicals vote Republican instead of Democrat.

I never thought I'd see the day i would say these words, "Bush is not the most inept speaker to ever run for President", enter the new champion, John McCain.
