Laura McGann, an enterprising reporter for the online Washington Independent, was doing a basic check on John McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin, and called up Kristie Smithers, the Wasilla City Clerk where Palin was Mayor. Ever courteous, McGann thanked Smithers, noting that she must have fielded request after request from the McCain campaign and Republican vetters.

"She chuckled," McGann wrote. "Then she told me that I'm the first person who has asked her office for anything."

The incident reflects the apparently superficial examination of Palin's past and present by the McCain campaign - a lapse that has produced a seemingly unrelenting series of negative news stories, many stemming from the new media, many catching Republican operatives off guard and many demonstrates the lightening fast response of both the blogosphere and the mainstream media.

Palin has turned into a media goldmine, not least for that pioneer of the Web

The media loves a lier because it sells so much product no matter who the lier is it really doesn't matter. they will ride this story until the lieng clown leaves town and since Mccain's campaign never vetted Palin it is the media's duty to do so for the Ameriacan people's own protection.

America loves a liar.... well that explains the fascination so many have for Obama

      Hi Driver,

The only reason that she is his pick is because of the 11% or so of former Clinton supporters who are angry at the Democratic Party. I am watching the coverage of the RNC on MSNBC and CNN, the Clinton women have been mentioned several times on both channels. I guess McCain feels that since they wanted a woman he will give them a woman.

I am waiting for them to come out singing her praises, or not. It will be interesting to see their reaction.

        WALL STREET JOURNAL POLL:

21% Hillary voters voting for McCain
        27% Hillary voters still undecided
52% Hillary voters gone over to Obama

Odd, a Gallup Poll shows 81% of Clinton voters are going to vote for Obama,

They also wanted and got the rich evangy base but they did not get the young evangies i think the younger religious right is smarter than this bull sh!t and i have more faith in the women of my great country to fall for this gimmick. I have been watching the Rep Convention also, since i have a few days off from the road. And from what i can see and have been reading is that they are not connecting. This must have been one desperate decision considering McCain was not able to connect.

Oh goody goody..we get a septagenarian and a newbie to state politics with ZERO federal credentials as the Republican choice this year.

Good grief..all of you disillusioned Republicans had better do something about your (ex) party.

I have no problems with the REAL things that republicans are supposed to represent. Small government, balanced budgets, favorable trade balances etc.

But the last person in the white house to do any of that was Bill Clinton. Ronnie didn't do it, and neither did Bush Sr. Think it over. If "tax and spend" democrats are the only ones who ever balance the budget.....what do republicans really stand for.

Sarah Palin is a joke..and not even a funny one. McCain only got her because he felt he needed a woman..and Pawlenty told the RNC he wanted nothing to do with the 2008 McCain train wreck.

Hispanics Unite. Support McCain. What has our support of the Democratic Party done for us? Look at Chicago. A large Hispanic population. Who are the Hispanic leaders? Sycophants who spend their day kissing the fondillo of a tyrannical corrupt bombastic and stupid Irishman. Look at Chicago. Where our most of our children fail to graduate from high school. Compare this to Miami where support of the Republican Party has brought real power and prosperity. Obama does not know our community. Obama represents the past. It is not change that he will bring but a return to failed liberal policies. Support McCain.

I didn't know that illegal Mexicans can vote. Don't you have a shack to rebuild?

      • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 09/04/2008 10:24:43 PM

Unfortunately, if Obama and his far left liberals have it their way, illegals would be voting - their promises to them is how they become so popular. Unfortunately many of them are too ignorant (not stupid - simply ignorant) of the lies being told to them...

    • Posted By: neos @ 09/04/2008 12:03:42 AM

Surprised to see that you don't understand that the latino community is NOT a monolithic entity. The predominantly Cubano population of Miami has a very different history from the Mexican population in Chicago. Educate yourself first. .

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state _ by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

I don't like promises of grand programs and tax cuts for 95% of the people when we are in such debt. Maybe I'm the ultimate idealist but what's wrong with TELLING THE TRUTH for once. Under the circumstances we can't have it all right now. I'm sorry but politicians like Mr. Obama assume the gullibility of people by telling them what they want to hear. A different kind of politics? So far, it's pretty run of the mill. There is no utopia out there - there is just..life.

      • Posted By: kle5507 @ 09/04/2008 11:31:08 AM

Didn't you hear, Obama's going to tax the rich and give the tax break to the middle class. It always surprises me how the GOP managed to manipulate the working class into thinking that their rich and that they should support tax cuts for the Rich and Oil company. Trickle down econmic = gives money to the rich until the pockets are full and anything that falls out, the poor and the middle class can fight for it. Wake dude. You're not rich! And you won't be. It's a GOP propaganda!

Becasue we all ned to laugh once in a while - Did anyone stop consider this scenario, just for fun? IF MCC were to win and Palin becomes Grand Poobah becasue some tragedy befalls MCC. Can you imagine her husband? The president's spouse - Grizzly Adams, ice fishing on the Patomac, snowmobile racing in the rose garden and moose hunting on the mall. Don't forget the home smoker he's got going outside the east wing, Think about all those state affairs dinners, he's wearing a plaid lumberjack shirt and asking each dignitary how he would like his moose steak grilled...

    • Posted By: RetiredMarine @ 09/04/2008 10:12:20 PM

Your comments show your ignorance. You seem to think that the "BIG CITY" is the only place we can get leaders and that everyone else is backwards. That is typical of liberal extremists. For your information, Moose is very good meat and would be a rather expensive dish to serve. Besides that small fact, what would her husband have to do with anything? Why does dressing up mean anything? What is wrong with a flannel shirt? I know Jimmy Carter is a piss poor example of a president, but look at his pictures - you will find he was probably one of the only presidents never seeming to wear a tie... I could go on and on but discussing this with someone as simple minded as you is rediculous...

The snarky Ms Palin wants the media to report on her undereducated teen son going to Iraq, but would prefer that they leave her HS drop out whiskey-swillin' daughter and her HS drop out drunk boyfriend out of it. She also doesn't want the media to get too close to the fact that the Lady Bristol is having a baby after being impregnated at 16. That's bad of the media - they should leave it. She does wants the media to report her opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere - after she supported it with deed and money. But, she does not want the media to report she left her little small town broke while mayor, but please do talk about the 80% lovefest-rate as a 1 1/2 year Gov. The media should steer clear of oil talk, oil-job hubbies, oil conflict of interests, murdered dogs and Library books.

The media should stay far away from her being under investigation by a bipartisan state legislative body. And Ms. Palin really promised to cooperate with a legislative inquiry, but this week she hired a lawyer to fight to move the case to the jurisdiction of the state "personnel board" - which Palin anoints and appointed. In her cloud of rhetoric musings and snaps, Palin said speeches are just a "cloud of rhetoric." Which the media should ignore altogether. And for God's sake - for the religious right - don't talk about the lobbyist hired and ear marks received, squandered and hidden. Instead talk about how she was vetted two week ago in three hours.

But she's apparently a good AIP hockey wife, who should be forgiven. A bit nasally though like Fran Drescher. I bet those glasses cost more than a haircut too. Stylish. She'll look good giving her sister's ex the boot.

McCain blew his chance to roll out his VP choice in a positive light. Geat for the right-wing Limbaugh listening base, but not so great for the majority of Americans who are tired of divisive Rove style partisanship and gridlock. After a brief attempt at an upbeat bio, someone cried havoc, and let loose this self-described pitbull with lipstick. Palin came across as stubborn, narrow-minded, mean-spirited , sracastic, smug - well, essentially a female version of George W. Bush. Speaking of W., his party kept him at satellite length and gave him less than eight minutes of their time - how pathetic is that.

Heck, I thought the Honorable Rev. Wright was given that speech of hate and anger, but as I looked a lil closer, it was this little white girl from a small country town in Alaska. Pretty lil thang too, I must say.

Thought the crowd resempled Rev. Wright's church as well, but the convention center was full mainly of old white folk. Looked like a depends party going on up dere.

    Hmmm?

Obama wants to bring the country together by hope.

McCain wants to seperate us by using a lil' white woman.

Guess that McCain feller, the war hero, is to old to get things done fer himself anymore. I thought he tried to use Cindee befer when she told us how proud she is to be a Jerk-merican. Guess she can't get the job done either. She's kinda long in the tooth, now.

Wonder when he's gonna ask the lil' white gal to accuse Obama of touch'n her somewheres private?
Why heck, it worked in the Tulsa riots, it worked in Missippi with Emmit Teal, and it worked in Floreeda at Rosewood. Just a few sampl'ns of our grand ol history. Blam'n da black man gets white fellers all riled up an all. Kind a like mob or somethin.

Quite a bit,... unless you are Sara Palin and then it's just lip stick and the pit bull she compares herself to doesn't need it.

Ha Ha ha Ho Ho Ho He He He

Do we have the where-with-it-all to realize unlike Sara Painlin that her bad joke was a direct cut to the working mothers of the United States who actually do participate in their children's activities (sports and other wise) through great sacrifice making sure their children have a good chance at a balanced, well adjusted life and maybe don't have time to always look their best in doing so. Calling them pit bulls without make-up. Typical out of touch Republican Clown Elitist, diguised as of the people (Get Real!). I don't have anybody on my block, who like this Clown, who thinks like she does, that women always have to look their best appearance wise no matter what they are doing. The GOP Politburo forced McCain into choosing Palin so an Ultra conservative will be in-line in case McCain croak or for the next election. She's just a puppet for WingNut like J. Dobson who is the biggest phony in the molds of Robertson ..etc. To win this election, McCain has whored himself to the darkest element of our society which is otherwise known as the religious right.

If Palin gets into office, this is what will happen:
    1. The 3 retiring justices will be replaced by ultra right-wing Scalia/Thomas/Alito clones.
    2. The Education department will be abolished. Evolution will be banned from public institution and replaced with creationism. And they won't have to disguised it with that phoney "intelligent design" crap.
    3. The EPA department will be abolished.
    4. Abortion will be abolished. Pro-choice avodcate will be prosecuted and put in jail.
    5. No more endangered species list. Hunt everything, save nothing.
    6. Drill, Drill, Drill. God Damn the Environment! You think Smog is bad in BeiJing. You hadn't see anything yet.

The Truth is the WingNut are pushing for armageddon so their souls can be save. And Earth is disposable since they will be all in Paradise.

September 03, 2008. So the mainstream media seems to now be letting up on the Palin baby drama, but we're not. MediaTakeOut.com just received evidence that calls into question whether Gov Palin's alleged son Trig was born when and where she claims.

We conducted a preliminary search of the Mat-Su Regional hospital's website (where baby Trig was supposedly born on April 18th), and the website DOES NOT show any record of Trig's birth. Instead, the site shows that only 2 baby's were born in the hospital that day - an Isaiah Travis and a Kayden Lexus.

It's still not enough for us to CONCLUSIVELY say that Gov Palin is full of it, but we're getting there. So now let's go with what we know AS FACT:

    1. Palin hid her pregnancy from the media. When she finally announced her pregnancy (in March) she was not showing any obvious signs of pregnancy despite being 7 MONTHS PREGNANT - Source.

    2. Gov. Palin mysteriously took her daughter Bristol out of school a few months before the March pregnancy announcement. The "official" reason for Bristol's removal from school was because she caught a serious case of Mononucleosis.

    3. During the time that Bristol was out of school with that "serious case of mono", Trig was born.

    4. No record of Trig's birth is readily available from the hospital which Palin claims to have delivered.

    5. And here is the kicker. Since Bristol is supposedly 5 months pregnant now, she must have conceived her child while she was out of school with that supposed serious case of mono.

    Stay tuned............

When the whole world is watching, Ms. Palin chooses to describe herself as a bitch with lipstick (defn of a hockey mom). And the GOP loves it. No where in her speech did she recognize the economic condition of the country. IRAQ or the emerging cold war with Mother Russia. This morning's unemployement rate is at 5.7%, the highest since 9/11. And Palin wants 4 more years of the failed Bush Policies.

I saw the McCain's new Ad yesterday. He's using Palin to go after the Big-O. It's so sad that the former POW known for his steel will is now using the short resume of his VP (the former Ms. Congeniality) to fight his battle for him. McBush wants to turn this election into a personality beauty contest. Talk about sexism.

I'm offended. So I've decided to do something about it. I donated some money to the Big-O's war chest this morning. And I suggest all of the Big-O's supporter on this forum to do the same. The GOP only understands one thing. That is money. And the more money we give to the Big-O campaign, the more dis-spirtied we will make them. If they report fundraising of 47 million, we'll give and help the Big-O meet 100 million. If you contribute to your 401K to save for the future, then see your donation to the Big-O's campaign in the same light. I've decided that I'm gong to give a little each week to the Big-O's campaign so that I and my family will have a brighter future. Don't just get mad, get even!

. . . . what about Sarah Palin and her hatred for America. Don't believe me...just ask the party she use to be a member of.......The Alaskan Independence Party.

Huh?. . . We all remember Obamas pastor (Rev. Wright) at the Trinity United Church of Christ (www.tucc.org). . . where Obama also thought of Rev. Wright as his spiritual mentor, close friend (who was like an uncle to him) . . who has helped shape his spiritual and moral beliefs he values and his life as a whole (given he had no father figure) over the past 20+ years. How can any American not consider how much influence this man might have had upon Obama who was as close to him as he has been over the past 20 + years? Think about it . . .especially in the world that we live in now with the ongoing threat of national terrorism (in add'n to international terrorism). And us knowing that Obama is willing to go talk to terrorist leaders without preconditions (IRAN is a tiny nation that is not a threat) and as no problem having relationships with past admitted terrorists that are unapologetic (Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Rashid Khalili) and radical orgs associated through Obamas dealings with the firms that he was a director on board(s) with Bill Ayers at Woods Fund for 10 years in the 90s.

That is the funny thing about some Republicans is that with no regard, they have destroyed not only Rev Wright but all BLACK churches that speak out against social injustice. If bothered to first hear the entire speech you would know he was actually referring to the government treating its citizen as less than human. It's like walking into a movie late watching 5 minutes and leaving. When asked you say you didn't like the movie. The youtube loop was ONLY a line in the speech. What is worse is that it is not even the WHOLE line in that one speech. Yes it was one speech... one time, not 20 years. You know that already because on the fact that you ALWAYS have solid references. However instead of the whole speech on Rev Wright, this time you choose youtube's clip. There have been many interviews in which he stated that youtube took his words out of context. I guess you share news only if it HURTS Obama

If you want to go back 40 years and not only tell us what Ayers did then but also give us references about the blatant inequality at that time, I'll read it.

I find it rather funny that McCain calls Palin a "reformer," but while she was mayor of Wasilla, the town received almost $12 million in earmarks. As mayor she hired Steven Silver, former Chief of Staff for Sen. Ted Stevens, as a lobbyist for Wasilla. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-earmarks3-2008sep03,0,6851593.story

The only thing Palin will change in Washington are her baby's diapers.
