POLITICS

Hidden Depths

The scion of a family of warriors, John McCain seems easy to venerate—or caricature. But he is more complex than you may think.

McCain is a fine American but in politics... he's a moderate Republican. Republicans have to contribute to conservative Republican campaigns (such as Sarah Palin's or others!) or the news media will continue to keep liberal Democrats and their stupidity covered for the public, and morphed into competent leaders!
The news network formula is easy to see! All a candidate has to do is speak anywhere for 10 minutes and insult the military, cops , christians, achievers or gun owners and the networks declare the candidate a brilliant actor!
Someone so "in touch!" So "caring!"
A candidate who can speak 10 minutes and not insult these target people will be declared out of toch. dull. Rambeling. A homophobic, bigoted ,sexist racist!l
That's all there is to it! If you show contempt for who the news networks hate, they campaign for you. If you fail to show cataloged contempt, the networks wage a hate campaign against you.
Republican modrates consistantly get clobbered by this formula as if they don't see it! And get clobbered again and again...like Mccain!
Conservative Republicans win against this formula. Rather, they counter it! Conservative and Moderate Republicans have different instincts and reflexes. One always fails.

Until most members of the media get it in their head that McCain has thrown his idealism and the maverick past down the window, we are in trouble--because they are not doing their job. They should have seen what is happening, and called it like it is. Clearly, we know now that Palin and McCain are no reformers but partners marching to the same Karl Rove tunes that have been played by Republicans in Washington and throughout the country most menacingly in the past 20 years. After Palin's big speech, what next? And does it (should it) matter? Palin has not answered specifically to many allegations or scandals swirling around her nor has she addressed any of the real issues of this campaign. Instead, she comes blazing with negative attacks and pleading that she be considered fit for the job simply because she is a woman who is your ???average hockey mom.??? With that any woman can be Vice-President or even President. Left behind in this calculation are women who are truly qualified for the job???K. Baily Hutchinson, for example, on the Republican side! To add insult to injury in this gamble, Palin felt able to compare her competency and background with that of Obama--a Harvard-educated lawyer chosen by his Party (not by one man) who served eight years in the Illinois Senate, is serving in the Senate as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, has managed a very successful campaign and is received enthusiastically within the United States and around the world. I can't believe it. The only way Palin is better than Obama is gutter talk! Because Palin delivered a good speech written for her by Bush-Rove divisive dark operators, that suddenly eliminates the concern we should all have about her qualification to be a potential Commander-in-Chief? If the media caves with feelings of guilt, we are done as a democracy and the most powerful nation on earth. At its best, the media stands as a sentinel of freedom. This campaign should be about facts (see the AP fact check on the RNC, Sep. 4/08), truth and issues, not personalities and personal attack. An uneducated electorate wielding a vote is a danger to democracy. That is why we have often elected the wrong people, for the wrong reasons and times. Dr. Sam

Re: Your Comment: "Clearly, we know now that Palin and McCain are no reformers but partners marching to the same Karl Rove tunes that have been played by Republicans in Washington and throughout the country most menacingly in the past 20 years."

This is your unsubstantiated opinion. Please, feel free to substantiate it with some facts.

Clearly, you didn't listen to Palin's speech. If you did, you would have heard her say why she's going to Washingtom.

The liberal media not doing their jobs? I agree with you on that one. They're in the tank for Obama.

    Who is the true reformer?

Sarah took on the corrupt Juneau political machine.

Obama turned a blind eye to the corrupt Chicago Political Machine (CPM). He even (of course) gained new 'friends' from the CPM who helped support him in his early political years in his campaigning.

Hmmm. . . . . You dont have to be a brain surgeon to figure THAT one out.

    It's called "Protocol"...

President Bush has been America's "Big Brother" for almost 8 years.

You know, the Big Brother, if you had one, you'd go get when the bully down the street bloodied your nose. Your Big Brother would go down there and kick his @$$!

Of all the things that are going wrong in the country, President Bush wasn't "trying" to fail. He was actually trying to succeed, but failed in the process.

The Democratic Party invited former Presidents Carter and Clinton to their convention to speak "live" before the country and the world.

The Republican Party and Senator McCain relegated a "sitting" Republican President to a "live-feed" via satellite!?! What the heck!?!

Instead, they had in attendance "live" a sitting governor who is so proud of her pregnant 17-year old daughter and 17-year old boyfriend that they were put on display before the country and the world as the "New" face of the Republican Party, instead of a "Sitting Republican President!?!"

Of all the things President Bush's father did behind the scenes to ensure the Republican Party held onto the White House for 2 consecutive terms, his son's political party is so dismissive of him that he's quietly asked not to attend the RNC convention!?!

Of course, former President Bush looked at his watch. He probably couldn't take much more of the BS...oops...I meant "lack of protocol!"

Senator McCain didn't know that the Democratic Party was holding their breath to make sure Governor Palin accepted the nomination, because "Opposition Research" indicated that the McCain/Palin ticket was a sure loser...a McCain/Hutchison, a McCain/Romney, even a McCain/Crist would have easily defeated the Democrats.

Senator McCain doesn't understand that the average American "Grandmother," the bedrock of American family values, takes pride in the "chastity" and public image of their granddaughters.

Granddaughters like Jenna Bush and Chelsea Clinton.

Senator McCain is not only going to destroy some of "Grandma's" fine china, he's successfully destroying the Republican Party.

By the way, "Grandma's" that can't see themselves voting for Senator Obama will vote for Senator Biden instead...same result!

    Republican Torture-Pigs and Perverts

We beat the Nazis without torturing prisoners, but Bush/Cheney decided that a few raggedy Taliban in caves were more terrible than the enormous German Army, and they disgraced the United States with crimes against humanity that Eisenhower and Roosevelt and Patton and Abraham Lincoln and Washington and Grant and even William Tecumseh Sherman would have condemned as contemptible sub-human perversions.

Palin and McCain want to continue these perverted crimes against humanity.

Sarah Palin is just another Republican torture-pig and pervert.

John McCain is just another Republican torture-pig and pervert.

A vote for Palin/McCain is a vote to disgrace the United States and the all the generations of our brave soldiers who rejected torture as a perversion unworthy of even the lowest human garbage.

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/05/2008 7:45:39 PM

Are you speaking of water boarding, or that equivalent of a college hazing incident at Abu-Ghraib? Either way, neither compare to having Americans' heads hacked off with a dull machete without so much as an aspirin to dull the pain, or electrocution of our soldiers, or having their eyes gouged out while they are still alive. Having said that, on September 6, 2006, the U.S. Department of Defense released a revised Army Field Manual entitled Human Intelligence Collector Operations that prohibits the use of waterboarding by U.S. military personnel.

Of course, you don't want to hear this, as it removes one of your reasons to hate Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin. If you bothered to stay informed, you would know that McCain has publicly stated that he doesn't condon torture in any form.

You are free to call John McCain and Sarah Palin torture pigs and perverts. Because it's a false accusation however that has no basis, you reveal yourself as a spineless coward that puts your choice of party above truth.

And by the way Jacob, don't be so naive as to think Nazi prisoners were only offered 'a little sponge cake und a little vine" while being interrogated in WWII.

People must remember that Hitler was also chosen democratically

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 09/05/2008 3:30:09 PM

Not exactly. Hitler came to power because the political system in Germany at that time gave disproportionate power to third parties. This enabled a small cohesive group to take over the government. This flaw in the German system was corrected after World War II.

GOTTA LOVE THIS FAMILY!!! Even better, you gotta love the GOP's effort to run a trick-play w/ 5seconds left in overtime....and the play goes HORRIBLY wrong!!!!

This is worse than a "Hail Mary" pass!!!!

You're so frightend of Sarah Palin that you wish to destroy her in any way you can. And this is what you come up with? Poke your pacifier back in your mouth and climb back up in your high chair, infant.

Both Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden respectfully asked both parties to leave children out of the campaign. What part of your candidates request do you not understand? Or is it that you are just a child yourself, and can't keep from acting your age?

Do the world a favor and try to grow up....

You're right. I'd want to keep my kids out of the campaign arena , also....especially if my 17yr old was a drunk whore, who got knocked up by her boyfriend. Especially if I was part of the GOP that touts their superiority on family values, and abstinance. Especially if I was a mother w/ a daughter, that every mom in this country teaches their daughters not to emulate.

                You're right......we're sorry.

We're having a problem with your identity... a few posts up you signed your name as "Dumbass", (I corrected your 3rd grade level spelling for you) but now you're signing your name as "Idiot". No matter... they both mean the same thing and fit you perfectly.

Frightened!?!? You idiot...I feel sorry for her and her family. She'a being used as a guinea pig by the GOP, and McCain is pimping her and daughter in order to catch the crumbs of irrational women who may fall from Obama's, obvious, victory table.

This woman's family secrets are being investigated w/ a fine-tooth comb, her financial and political world is being turned upside-down (she's currently under investigation by the ethics committee), her husband's political affiliations are being revealed (once campaigned for Alaska's succession from the U.S.), and her daughter's sexual history will conitinue to be news-worthy.

Frightened?!?! You absolute dunce!!!! This woman will be used and ruined, and the GOP will still lose this election.

You collossal idiot!!! Oh yeah....the daughter hasn't denied the pics.

You're so full of sh!t your eyes are brown, friggin' hypocrite. Yeah, you're not scared, the election is already over! Right... That's why you just threw the infantile tantrum you just threw.

This woman will be used and ruined? Please, grow up before you make yourself look even more like a jackass than you already have.

This comment came from a Republican woman.

I am a Republican woman and thought Gov. Palin's speech really packed a punch. When she made the "community organizer / 'real' responsibilities" comment, however, I cringed with embarrassment. If it weren't for community organizers with names like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Bloomer, Gov. Palin would never have been standing on that podium. Perhaps the term "community organizer" is vague, but the comment demonstrates how out of touch she is with the impact people and volunteers in the trenches have in trying to improve lives. Discounting the credibilty of this role is a big mistake. Can you say "Boston Tea Party"?

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 09/05/2008 12:27:59 AM

The only difference with Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Bloomer is that when they were community organizers they made significant accomplishments through their own efforts, but in Obamas case after 3 years in the role as community organizer he managed to get asbestos removed from low income housing projects. Anthony, Stanton and Bloomer made their own rules and responsibilities to make the accomplishments they made. Obama on the other hand can account as his major accomplishment getting the absestos taken out of complexes. The reason that Obama is continually questioned or targeted on this role he played cuz he has said many times that it was what helped him to qualify to get into politics to run for office..

      • Posted By: NewsWkDickG @ 09/05/2008 1:03:09 PM

Funny, what Obama accomplished in his few years as a community organizer seems more substantial than what McCain accomplished in his many years. Interesting.

McCain turned 72 this month! God forbids if something happens to him, this ex-mayor and beauty paegent (under federal investigation whose husband is VP of British Petrolium and he is anti-abortion and wants to
reverse Row V Wade) from Wassila is going to have the key to the nukes. NO WAY, NO HOW, NO McCAIN!!!

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 09/04/2008 8:06:32 PM

72 is the old version of 62 in this day in age. McCain has been thoroughly checked out and is fine for a man his age. He gets checked out for any cancer lesions every 2-3 months so that if any sign of skin cancer pops up it is addressed immediately. He just, last year, hiked the total rim of the Grand Canyon last summer with his sons and his mother is 96 and still feistily getting around just fine for a woman of that age. Given all that, McCain dropping dead is the last of my worries.

As for Obama, he wants to drastically reduce our troops and our missle systems, he wants to meet with leaders with terrorisit countries with no pre-conditions and in no way I cannot picture him taking military force on Iran . . . With Obama in office he will tamp down this country to take the US sovernity away rather than build it up. There is no doubt in my mind. And now with Palin on the ticket with her executive and financial management and budget background to get us out of the economy mess (both Obama and Biden have non of that experience. . .none) that has only strengthened my pull towards a Republican vote. Lets see how she plays out in the VP debates early Oct. She is not called Baracuda for nothing. ; 0 D

      • Posted By: Kboogie @ 09/04/2008 8:27:58 PM

Can't wait for that foreign policy debate w/ Biden. And that gender b*llsh*t won't make him shy away from totally destroying her. I have to admit, Biden is an azzhole and lives to belittle opponents, and loves even more to condescend. He won't give a damn that she's a woman.

This should be fun!! Get that card ready, Share!

        • Posted By: sharenews @ 09/04/2008 11:47:55 PM

I agree that Biden should debate against Palin just like he would debate against male VP (which means keeping sexist remarks out of the picture which he has been known to make in the past). I personally do not think he will do anything of the kind. That he will be his usual attack dog and we will see how Sarah Baracuda holds up to him. You gotta remember, McCain has the experience needed to deal with foreign policy stuff, knows many leaders well, has visited their countries many times, has built personal relationships. Then there is McCains long military career (which helps but is not the sole reason for being Prez), totally has been dedicated to his country . So Im not worrried about Sarah not being extremely versed with foreign policy, especially giiven we have General Patraeous and other ground leaders to advise the prez at all times. Besides, you can bet once McCain is Prez she will be taking a 'tour' to meet all of these leaders numerous times (like Obama did this summer and all of a sudden people are less worried about him on foreign policy? Yeah, right. He not only does not have foreign policy background, but he has never led or managed anything from an executive level where a CEO (e.g. mayor, governor, etc.) is making decisions on a daily basis. So given that, the reality is that the Obama ticket has no executive experience at all. The McCain-Palin ticket covers both the foreign policy need and the executive knowledge to get us out of this economic mess were are in. McCain -Palin is the stronger ticket the way I look at it.

But back to your point, sure, I do think Biden should go at it with Palin like he would if she were male VP. No hold barred. And I gotta feeling that Sarah will stand up for her own. I cant wait to see the two of them debate. Biden better watch out when the get into the debate about our economy cuz he cant get help from Obama on that one either. LOL. It should be fun, fun, fun!

You are not worried about Sarah but I would be extremely worried about Sarah if she were our VP, God forbid! She is grossly under qualified, extreme in everything she does and, even now, only functions as an attack dog. McCain could have chosen so much better but his only criteria was for someone that could be the slanderer of the opposition and someone to appease the base in his party who were aggressively attacking him. As a result, he got what he got. I realize you are not going to give up or even admit the obvious and still go on and on, quoting sources and trying to sway people's thinking and manipulate them to get their vote. That is a shame but hopefully your tenacity and repetition won't mean much as the facts become more and more apparent to everyone. Personally I get tired of this stuff, especially when it is so obvious that with some people, no matter how much truth stands before them, they still depend on the BS.

      • Posted By: NewsWkDickG @ 09/05/2008 12:48:09 PM

McCain throughly checked out? Twice with melanoma, has physical difficulty, would be 72 starting his term, has made numerous blunders, loosing his train of thought, confusing heads of state, mixed up on geography re nations currently in conflict, has trouble without a teleprompter, can't handle a computer,,, and you would have the 'pit bull with lipstick' as vice president. That isn't funny, that is downright scary!

  • Posted By: MrIndia @ 09/03/2008 4:43:27 PM

I know i am a naive fool but i still fanatsize about a McCain-Obama ticket. McCain's experience, gravitas, character and old school values would have nicely complimented Obama's unbridled energy, daring and vision. Together, they could have made America finally and comprehensively realize its promise. Both for itself and for the world at large. Too bad party politics won't allow it.

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 09/05/2008 12:11:51 PM

It's not politics -- it's a fundamental difference of opinion about the policies that should direct this country. McCain believes that we should continue our current foreign policy in Iraq for as long as it takes to establish a settled democracy in a country where tribal and sectarian differences have dominated for centuries. He believes that our foreign policy should empahsize military might rather than diplomacy. On the domestic front he believes in the "trickle down" theory that holds that giving big tax breaks to the richest in our country will eventually trickle down to benefit people in the lower income brackets. He believes that market forces will solve problems in health care, education, job creation, mortgage and investment irregularities, Social Security and most the other domestic issues.

On the other hand, Obama believes that we had no business going into Iraq and we should withdraw as soon as we reasonably and responsibly can, leaving the Iraqis to govern their own nation. He believes that diplomacy is the main vehicle of foreign policy and that military action should not be threatened easily or often. On the domestic front, he bellieves that the middle class is due for a major tax break, while the highest earners should carry a more proportional share of the tax burden. He believes that quality public education (including college for those who want it and can benefit from it), quality health care and a stable Social Security system to ensure an income for the elderly and disabled are social rights that ultimately make this country stronger. He believes that government has a role in job creation and, at the very least, it should not subsidize the exportation of American jobs overseas with tax breaks. He believes that pepole who are in danger of losing their homes because of fradulant lending practices should have some relieve that allows them a second chance to maintain their homes.

So, you can see, there is not much common ground here. I'm not sure that even your evaluation of their personalities is accuract. McCain is impulsive and tempermental. Obama is deliberative and constant. It's not a "Dream-ticket" you've imagined. It's a nightmare.

Did it strike anyone else as odd that John McCain warned the "Washington establishment" that "change in coming"? Hasn' the Republican Party BEEN the establishment in Washington for the past 8 years? Was he warning his own party? Were the people in that convention hall cheering their own dissipation? If change is coming, doesn't that mean that a Democrat will take over the White House? How can McCain run against his own party's record -- especially when he was a major advocate of that record? Can he do that? Are there really enough voters in America who are that clueless to make this a viable strategy? I am very confused!

  • Posted By: bonnetteblj @ 09/05/2008 12:22:59 AM

Tonight, at the Republican Convention, being televised by all major networks and major
network news stations, the Republicans ran a video on 9/11. The fact that they are
politicizing 9/11 and trying to use same scare tactics to get voters to vote for John
McCain, as the Bush Admin. after 9/11 and in the 2004 election, is disgusting and
    dishonorable!

The Bush Admin. and John McCain have both said they will get Osama Bin Laden and
the people who did the 9/11 attacks. Neither has done anything remotely close to
    going after the people.

Now, since the Republicans don't believe this election is about issues, they are playing
the fear card which worked so well for the Bush Admin. McCain said tonight that
he is a 'Maverick' and 'there will be change'. There is NO CHANGE with these people
who continue to play the same old games instead of fixing anything in our country.

Jobs, healthcare, the economy, ending the Iraq war, fixing our infrastructure, finding
new renewable energy sources and limiting our dependence on foreign oil, restoring
our civil liberties and Constitutional rights, etc. There are SO many problems, real
problems that need addresssing. Senator Obama was right when he said 'McCain
just does not get it.' The Republicans think they will win by fear tactics again,
but they may just be surprised. The American people have finally caught on and
that is why Senator Obama is so popular. He offers REAL CHANGE and the
opportunity for all of us to get our country back to prosperity, peace and
    happiness!

    • Posted By: NewsWkDickG @ 09/05/2008 11:44:11 AM

While it was minimally done you are still correct, they did refer to and try to use scare tactics and get credit referencing 9/11 and terrorism in that context. It is a common effort on their part and as often noted, there isn't much substance anywhere else, some slander but nothing (as they say) with meat in it.

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 09/05/2008 12:43:33 AM

I dont know what major stations you were watching to see this video, but i didnt see anything like that on FOX and the CNN channels. They mostly had the reporters / pundits talking about the candidates, etc. as speeches went on in background. Im not saying it wasnt shown, just that the major networks I was watching didnt run it. You must have been watching C=span cuz the pundits dont talk through the convention on that channel.

I think if they did show it , it all depends on how it was presented cuz I do think it could be effective in reminding US citizens that we must never forget the tragedy we were presented with and how important this election is to get a President elected who will continue to keep the US protected (since 9/11 under Bushes terms we have not had another US attack . . . ) . Whomever we are to elect we need to consider which man would be must prepared (Barack or McCain) to be prepared to protect this country that we love. I have no problem with the video concept . . but, like I said, it depends on how it was presented. Maybe I cant catch it on youtube. Glad you mentioned it cuz I know I didnt catch it on any major network myself.

The hoopla is finally over and now we are left to digest what we have been presented. It would seem that:

If you want an attack dog, as she says, ???a pit bull with lipstick???, a feisty individual eagerly waiting to take over, then Sarah Palin will fill the bill. However if you want a Vice President with all that entails, with the appropriate qualifications, capabilities and stature, then Joe Biden superbly meets those requirements.

If you want someone who has flown an airplane, someone with a patriotic and influential military ancestry, someone who is unquestionably patriotic and who has been a heroic POW, someone who has a history of supporting Washington as it is yet who advocates the need for change, someone who admits that his party has ???lost the people???s trust???, someone who challenges the people to create the change, then John McCain answers your needs.

However if you think what is needed is someone with the stamina, the intellect, the compassion and understanding to implement change, someone with the clear thinking, someone experienced in fighting for the average person, someone who won???t just bore you but instead sincerely feels the meaning behind the words, someone who is not only patriotic but capable of and committed to being President for all Americans, then Barack Obama is ready.

In any case, at least it has been very clearly identified and completely admitted by all parties that we desperately need change and that we just can???t have more of the same!

Heroic? Yes! Patriotic? Yes! Qualification or experience for President? NO! Give credit where credit is do but don't exaggerate. John McCain is even no more of a 'Maverick' than he is a true Republican, of course not a Democrat either. John McCain has always tried to go with whatever benefits him. He was different before the Keating scandal, when he almost got nailed, and then different after. He was again different in 2000 and then after when Bush, he thought, played dirty politics to defeat him. He was once again different after committing his full and constant support to Bush in 2004 and then got their return support now in 2008. He is also now demonstrating a different McCain as he tries to portray a 'Maverick' and still move to the right to appease the conservative money and leaders (a difficult charade). Is there one McCain? Very doubtful and it is very unlikely that there would be one as President - whatever way the favorable wind blows!

'After unleashing Guiliani, Graham, Palin, etc, etc, with their tirades of hate, McCain calls for an end to constant partisan rancor'. What a joke.

McCain loves his country to the point of destroying it, either through starting a another Cold (or Hot) War or continuing the illegal occupation of Iraq, which is making us into a target not only in Iraq, but around the world. Goaded into a war by the lies and half-truths by the Bush administration, we have become the pariahs of the world, not the moral leaders as in the past.

He offers REAL CHANGE and the
opportunity for all of us to get our country back to prosperity, peace and
    happiness!
