The launch of the GOP convention was muted by concern for those in the path of Hurricane Gustav.

Republican Party activists have been gearing up for this week ever since the GOP picked St. Paul, Minn., to host the 2008 convention two years ago. But the party got off to a quiet start, as organizers scaled back the schedule out of concern for those in the path of Hurricane Gustav. Celebrations were curtailed, amid a push to emphasize service, and the need to provide humanitarian aid. The program for day one was largely scrapped; President Bush and Vice President Cheney announced that they would not attend. But the party will still conduct its necessary business, namely, nominating their candidate and unifying behind him.
