Palin's speech was not that good. The commentators make their remarks as not to offend. A majority of her speech was lies and there was no substance. To those of you that say while she was mayor Obama was a community activist need to do some research before you post. He was an activist 20 years ago while she was working on a fishing boat. He was out in the community helping people get back on their feet when she was only concerned about herself. He became a state senator some years later to help impoverished communities throughout the state of Illinois while at the same time she was in Washington (as mayor of Wasilla then later as governor) lobbying for money something she and McCain are supposed to be against. This shows she is nothing but a political opportunist who flip-flops when it is in her best interest just as her running mate has.

I was in college gefore abortion was legal and can remember your articles on women dying while getting illegal abortions. I think that it is immoral to talk of removing this option from women. It is not always possible for a woman to go through a pregnancy and birth. Not every community supports pregnant teens, or even older women who must give up a child. The Republicans are not addressing the problems of women's low salaries, how poor and middle income families can get health insurance, child care, and just getting food for the family. I hink these should be addressed BEFORE they take away options.

The only thing she could do is attack Obama and Biden. She has nothing else. The bottom line is taht the country is in the toilet from forgien policy to economics.' that is all Bush's doing she said nothing about how they are going to fix it. They are trying to act like the last 8 years never happen. WOW she sold a jet on ebay I sell things on Ebay should I run for VP. She has also line item vetoed children's health Care and sex education in scholls. We see how that worked out for her'. She doesn't belive in global warming while everyone is saying how wonderful she is we had a large chunk of ice break away out of Canada. What does these people need to happen to see that something needs to be done. This person is just Karl Rove and all the other people that have screwed up this country in a skirt

I definitely noticed that, too. I just finished watching it again and all I heard were snarky swings at the Dems. What does she bring to the table? That's what we really want to know. Also, Obama said that Palin's family is off-limits--apparently the Repubs don't extend the same courtesy, taking a swing at Michelle. I'm so sick of politics where it's basically just trying to make the other candidate look worse than you so you win by default.

      • Posted By: BexHi @ 09/04/2008 12:04:30 PM

Last week in Obama's speech all he did was bash Rep. and mock us and this week when we make comments about you thats bad - it goes both ways!!!
just for the record, AFTER Obama said his family is "off limits" the Dem campaign tore Gov. Palin's family apart - so get the record straight and stick to your words and rules for a change - oh I forgot you dont know how....

MicHELLe opens her self up...with nasty unbridled tongue...."For the FIRST Time in my life I'm proud of my country"....."America is a downright mean country".......She choose to be a part of the debate. It was her and Barry's decision, not the RNC's.

When anyone goes on the campaign trail, and gives harsh opinionated remarks....they become fair game. She has only seen the beginning.

This country is FAAAAAAAR from being in the toilet - in fact if you say its in the toilet now it must have been way far down in the sewer drain before Pres. Bush took power since he was the one to break through and work on freedom and safety for our country he improved the budget which was down far low when Clinton was president - so if it rose from being far down in the sewer and now rose to being in the tilet I would say that is an improvement however since I love my country too much - unlike you who loves to moan about your country and be ungrateful for everything it has to offer therefore you want to vote for someone like Obama who has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for is state so far and so he will bring the country down back to the sewer so you can complain even more - well I have news for you Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin both have tremendous expereince in improving things as wll as experience in all the issues at stake, i.e. safety for our country, budgeting, and energy - these are the most importnant issues and they will fix it since they have experience unlike your Obama who doesnt even know to vote on little issues and so would improve nothing despite the fact he claims in a bluff of lies that he will! Get real we know America needs McCain and Palin they are the best!

the speech sucks, it was all about attacks. she need to show us why she is ready to be vice president. She down play Obama coomunity organizing which in essence put down the work of community organizers in the country and their importance from a grass roots perspective. she is forcing her daughter to get married at 17 because she is pregnant, honestly she needed to talk more about herself because governor of Alaska is not enough.

............................Sarah Palin-----A new type off Political Attack Dog. America is facing something new with Palin as John McCain's V.P. choice. Palin is a Attack Dog candidate Just as Richard "Dick" Cheney was for Bush in 2000 and 2004 only just a new style. Palin is agressive and twists words just like Cheney but she brings a new background......female....young at 44....an ex Beauty Queen...running like she is going for Student Body President. McCain choose her to dress up his stale style and drab oratory inorder to gain support from the Far Right Wing of the Republican Party. Palin will loose her novelty soon and the reality of her past statements and history will surface to where America will realize that she is a fringe candidate representing little of what they want to happen in their lives and to America in the next four years. Palin pleases the Hard Core Conservatives but not most women and families that live everyday lives in our Country.........Let more come out about Palin, time will show her to be a Public Relations Stunt for the established selfish Republican interests.

With all the snazzy comments and sarcasm, where were the meat and potatoes of ; THE ECONOMY STUPID, THE HOUSING CRISIS STUPID, HEALTH CARE AND THE LACK THERE OF, AND OUR JOBS BEING LOST. Maybe I missed the whole reason that we are looking for a change from the doctrines that got us into this mess. Sarah Palin's speech was good news for the rich. I JUST AIN'T ONE OF THEM !!!!

  • Posted By: Mwalimu @ 09/04/2008 11:35:31 AM

Palin is very definitely the GOP???s North Star.
In her debut, she already lied several times. For instance, she claimed to be an outsider, but she is no stranger to Washington, going there frequently to lobby for earmarks and porkbarrels for both her home town and Alaska.
In addition, she lied about the energy crisis. More drilling will not bring down the price of oil. And nuclear energy, McCain???s pet pork barrel solution, contains many environmental risks.
While she trashes Obama for being a community organizer and seeking to help workers displaced by the global economy, She also trashes Obama???s energy plan which would free us from fossil fuels in 10 years and provide millions of high quality green collar jobs.
Although she loves to smear Obama, Palin seems totally that in 2006 alone, 5,840 American workers died in fatal workplace injuries, and that 50,000 to 60,000 workers died from occupational diseases. My source for this inofmration is USW@Work, published by the United Steel Workers Union, which brings up another irony.
While Palin claims to come from a humble background, she hates labor unions and blames them for unemployment. If only American workers would accept the same wages and working conditions as the workers in Bangladesh, India, or Colombia, we would not have unemployment.
This of course is the BIG reason Palin is the GOP???s North Star.
She can successfully turn one segment of the working class against the other: the workers in American against the workers in Colombia, the blue collar workers against elitists like Obama and the Democratic party who want to help the little man. The GOP thrives on this sort of division because they want to keep a large segment of the population bitter, angry, frustrated, and divided so that the corporations an rob this underclass of every penny they earn. The GOP is of course joined by the mega-buck, mega-church preachers of the evangelical right, who use the Sunday offering plate as an additional way to rob working class people.
No wonder the GOP hates Obama.
Palin, as well as the GOP, assume that the Bubbas of this country are stupid. They fell for this plan of attack before - they???ll fall for it again. What we???re seeing is is Palin not a new, maverick, reformist GOP, but the same old GOP in a new package. (Old product, new label.)
I just hope the working class of this country gets smart and gets smart fast.

At least McCain had the guts to choose someone different and outside the Washington crowd. Obama could have picked Hillary and electrified the Democrats and almost guaranteed his election. Instead he showed what a true panty waist he is and picked someone who has been in Congress for over 30 years. How is that change?

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 09/04/2008 8:43:11 AM

How could have Obama picked someone he spent MONTHS beating up? How could Hillary have accepted the nomination with all of the ridiculing she did of him? The Republicans would have had a field day with that hypocrisy. While it would have been the "dream ticket" it just wasn't feasible.

      • Posted By: Red Meat Democrat @ 09/04/2008 8:52:31 AM

Beating each other up is just part of politics. Once the dust settles then everyone puts their differences aside and works together, just like they are all doing now. If Obama can't get past that then maybe he doesn't have the temperament to be President. The point is he has promised change and then when he has a chance to prove it he plays it safe and boring.

        • Posted By: BexHi @ 09/04/2008 11:02:43 AM

Biden spenth months last year bashing Obama and now Obama picked him what difference would it have made had he chosen HIlery who did the same?

  • Posted By: BexHi @ 09/04/2008 10:55:12 AM

bennettsusan - is merely describing the effects of Obama's speech from last week - a bunch of bluff which he spoke and not proving that he has any experience - and that???s because he has none.
Sarah Palin HAS got lots of experience. How can you even mock her experience when Obama has none and all he has ever done especially when it came to making decisions was voted present rather than voted for one side or another - why because he CANT make decisions because he doesn???t know enough!
Gov. Sarah Palin CAN make decisions and has actually voted AGAINST any bills which would???ve cost taxpayer???s money, She is not here to "cheat" Washington nor has she ever done so - she is here to reform Washington. Obama does not want to help us with the energy problem - he just wants to spend more money on creating different ways of finding energy - in the meantime we need to drill in order to help us with the energy crisis - with the earnings of that drilling oil money we will invest in ways of finding new forms of energy. The country needs to earn the money before it has what to spend and that is what Se. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin will do!
In addition to which they will finish the war which was started and which is steps away from winning and move on to secure other parts of the world which affects our security. Iraq was a major threat and we could not let them grow stronger - and all Obama wants to do is pull out all the troops there - however he keeps changing his mind about that too. One day he says he will pull out right away and another day he says he will give them a time line ??? just like with everything else, he keeps changing his mind since he doesn???t know so he cant decide - I guess former mayor Rudy Giuliani was right Biden should get a written contract from Obama to accept as running for VP - since who knows what can happen there!

What Sarah Palin proved last night was that she could take a speech, who's tiny attempts at substance were either outright lies or bent truths, and use self-satisfied sarcasm to whip up a totally partisan crowd who desperately wanted to like her.

The speech itself was little more than a personal smear of Obama with very little substance. She used heavy sarcasm to denounce Obama's community organizing history, stating that at the same time she was

making "executive" decisions as the mayor of Wasilla, a town of some 7,000. She used a broad stroke to paint herself as a reformer, but failed to mention that she supported the bridge to nowhere until it became
politically unpopular, and paid lobbyists lots of money to get Washington earmark money disproportionate to the population of her state. Of course they like her there! Most people think it's okay to cheat Washington
    when they are the recipients.

In her speech, she said that Obama was a celebrity senator who has done nothing in the senate. She failed to mention that he has coauthored a major ethics bill. She said he will produce no new energy, gee I heard
him talk about all the same new forms of energy she mentioned earlier. She said he will weaken our
military and allow Bin Laden to win. In his exceptance speech Obama talked about rebuilding and
repositioning our military in Afghanistan, where it is common knowledge that Bin Laden has been hiding.

Palin said all this with relish and a smug expression as if that alone were proof of her credibility. Better be careful Sarah Palin. The American people are smarter than that and they are not biting on that old kind of Republican politics....fear and smear. You may have brought down the Republican house last night...big deal. There are not enough Republicans this time around to carry you. You must win over independents and they are independents for a reason. They are the people who don't float along on party hype. They have make decisions based on facts they pay attention to and understand. Your job last night may have been to secure conservative votes and you probably did that. What the rest of us on TV saw was just more Republican spin. The words reform and change were mentioned consistently, but they never showed up at the arena.

John McCain wanted Joe Lieberman as his running mate. His party leaders said no, because Lieberman does not believe in the Republican platform line for line. Instead, he chose an ultra-conservative in a skirt to cow-tow to the conservative base. So much for being a maverick.

Palin's speech may resonate with the emotion and confidence of someone who talks to the world as if she is talking to a small town - because she's from a very small town and has frankly never been cut down to size by living in a larger metropolis of millions of people like many Americans - and the reality is she lacks the gravitas, foreign policy experience, and national experience to protect the welfare of 301,139,947 people.

Any high school teenager who has no concept of his or her vulnerability in the world (because he's never been out there, let alone out of the state) could have delivered that speech confidently.

Palin simply has no concept of the scope of what is at stake. If she did, she couldn't possibly even accept the position in good faith. There are thousands of Americans who have more foreign policy experience than Palin. And she doesn't have the support of international leaders like Obama has, two national bestselling books discussing domestic and international issues like Obama has, and even a graduate degree for that matter.

Senator Obama was very gracious when he urged people to leave Palin's family out of the public square. He was very gracious when he said on 60 Minutes that he wished Palin luck, but not too much luck, with a smile. Palin frankly was not gracious - which is particularly surprising from a new comer to national politics

Class and style don't go far in this country. Obama's reluctance to mudsling (untl recently) has hurt him, I think. He's gained a lot of respect in my eyes, but unfortunately the general public is not respectable nor educated.

      • Posted By: busby @ 09/04/2008 9:33:33 AM

Speak for yourself. It's not that Obama is above mudslinging. He just assigns his people to do it. And, after all, he has you haters. The people who have driven moderate dems like myself from the party. So go kiss the feet of the DNC and pray that you don't need us.

I believe that she gave a passionate speech that showed she was a fighter, but what is she and McCain fighting for. It is easy to bash and spew out lies, but please give some substance. Tell us how you are going to reverse all of these problems that are on most Americans' minds. I don't need to see who can sling the most mud. We all know that it is the Republicans.

I would guess that the plan is to let McCain fill in the details tonight. If he doesn't, then I am clueless. But I have to say I really, really like her. Whether I would vote for McCain is another story. But both he and Sara Palin seem real. Which is quite a departure for politicians.

  • Posted By: metzlerd @ 09/04/2008 5:08:45 AM

I'm amazed at the press coverage of Palin's speach. It's as if they can't get past her being a woman. For somebody who is supposed to know something about energy, she seems to know very little. While we have less than 3% of the declining world oil reserves, she said we have "plenty". Either she doesn't have a clue or she just doesn't have anymore regard for the truth than George Bush.

She pretended to not understand what a vote of "present" is in Illinois, equating it with indecisiveness. I'm not saying that everybody should know that it is a NO vote with an Explanation for why they are voting no vs a NO vote that has no explanation. But, somebody who is making a judgement based on that, yet really seems to have no clue what they are talking about, is clearly not making rational informed decisions. Here again, this is not unlike the worst of Bush/Cheney/McCain.

Forgetting all of the lies, I expected the Republican party to at least take some kind of responsibility for the problems of the last 8 years, if not the last 30, since they've controlled the government for nearly all of it. If you can't own up to your mistakes, how can you begin to take steps to fix them.

I am not impressed by taking dishonest pot shots at the opponents. What would impress me more is some demonstration of an understanding of our problems, beyond just calling Hillary or Americans in general a bunch of whiners.

    • Posted By: busby @ 09/04/2008 9:13:08 AM

I thought a "present" vote signified that, due to political considerations, a politician did not want to commit one way, or another. Frankly, that fits Obama more than a no vote with expanations!

    • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 09/04/2008 8:13:18 AM

The DNC will not accept responsibility for it's inability stemming from low public approval! This is because the liberals and the Left offer explanations and excusses while encourage everyone to whine to justify expanding government... waging discrimination campaigns against gun owners, christians, achievers, police and military experts.
These activities may be applauded by far-left and liberal kooks but there is not a lot of actual activity here! It's all explanation, excuse, whineing and waging discrimination campaigns against segments of the RNC constituency (waging discrimination campaigns against AMERICAN PEOPLE, and your nieghbors, and perhaps relatives, too!).
So while the DNC has had majority control over the Congress this important majority has been squandered because the DNC leadership has only used that majority to campaign! And AGAINST American people. If Obama could lead his party out of this Left-wing dementia he would have by now! Obama can't lead his own party toward productivity. He can't lead the country.

    Appalled.
That???s the first word that comes to my mind after vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin introduced herself to the American people.
First she claims to be an outsider. Then she brags her status as an average hockey mom who signed up for the PTA and ran for city council.. This automatically makes her qualified for vice president.
What she did not mention was the truth. For example, she didn???t mention her crusade against the town librarian for refusing to remove objectionable books from the library. I found out about that ignoble accomplishment courtesy of Tim Rutten in the September 3 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Also according to an article by Peter Wallsten in the Los Angeles Times (September 2, 2008) Palin frequently on lobbying trips to Washington. As mayor of Wasilla, she netted $ 26.9 worth of earmarks from 2002-2003 As govenor she requested 31 earmarks worth $ 197 million. She also originally supported infamous ???Bridge to nowhere.??? which McCain uses as an egregious example of outrageous pork barrel spending.
Considering that Palin got the endorsement of former crook and indicted Speaker of the House Tom DeLay, I would not be surprised if Palin has found ways to help herself to some of the money she earmarked to Alaska.
In addition, Palin???s energy proposals are also made up of deceptive advertising. Her priorities do not promise clean energy. Instead, they reflect the wishes of the lobbyists for the nuclear power industry who are financing McCain???s campaign,
More drilling will not bring cheaper gasoline; it could pose severe environmental risks. Nuclear power, which Palin promotes, is not renewable. It also has severe environmental risks - and Palin has not come up with a sound, way to dispose of nuclear waste, which will be a multi-billion dollar tax burden for future generations. Palin shows no understanding about the environmental risks of global warming, probably because she refuses to believe that global warming comes from carbon-based, fossil fuels. These are dangerous misconceptions for future generations.
Palin again has lied to the American people.
Palin's debut, full of lies and deceptions proves that there is no such thing as a new Brand Republican. Palin and McCain are merely clones of George Bush & Co.
