Enter Your Comment The speeches last night were interesting. Basically, Thompson got up and said to the delegates "dont worry, he's one of us" and then Lieberman got up and said to the viewing audience "dont worry, he's not one of them"

I guess it took eight years of increased suck-up to the Bush Administration for the GOP to finanlly nominate McCain. He's more like Bush today than the 'maverick' he claims to be. He can't even choose his own running mate! How 'maverick' is that? And, as for the POW story . . . we've all heard it, we all respect it, but like Fred Thompson said last night, being a POW doesn't qualify someone to be president. Stop clinging to the ONLY thing he has going for him. I don't even think I heard anyone mention an issue last night . . . just more jibberish.

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/03/2008 11:21:45 AM

Dead wrong. Republicans knew that anyone who was closely aligned with Bush would lose, so they held their noses and voted for the one candidate who had shown his independence: John McCain.

And if you don't think McCain bucked party know-it-alls with his selection of Palin, you are not reading or listening to the news. He found another maverick out there in Alaska, one whose philosophies on government were aligned with his own, one who would rather risk her political career by challenging the power structures in her own party than let government corruption continue.

McCain has voted more in line with other republicans only since the democrats gained a majority in congress.

Joining republicans to vote against bad bills is not the same as voting for bad bills. Like the one the democrats are pushing now that will eliminate secret ballots in union elections.

How American is that? I wouldn't want anyone to know how I vote.

I can only assume that this is an example of the kind of "change" we could expect with the democrats controlling both the Congress and the Executive branch.

Yes they are two peas in a pod. They're pod-people. The Maverick and the Annie Oakley coming out with their six-guns a'blazin'. Yes sir, John "I'll call you the C-word when I want" McCain and his trusted side-kick, Sarah "You're fired" Palin. Go team.

      • Posted By: sdguy1 @ 09/03/2008 11:35:53 AM

Well I guess you got your Fox News/GOP talking points brochure. McCain didn't even want Palin -- he wanted Libermann! Do you watch the news? He bucked nothing -- Charlie Black made the call.

Anger and hate fromthe right? Hmm what was the Dem convention all about if not anger and hate against the left - it was all Obama was able to say!

    • Posted By: sdguy1 @ 09/03/2008 11:46:00 AM

Obama and the Dems showed more class and tact at their convention -- honoring and praising McCain for his service to this country -- then the GOP could muster in a lifetime. John McCain is a great man, we happen to disagree . . . that's about the extent of it. Show me some of the hateful words they've used (and the ones Fox News makes up).

  • Posted By: cobalt6 @ 09/03/2008 11:39:49 AM

The Republican convention was great tonight! Mrs. Bush her speech was nice, she knows how to be a true first lady! Fred Thompson's speech was really good, true, and interesting. Joe Lieberman's speech was great too, 4 years ago another democrat, Miller came to the rep. convention and endorsed Rep. this year it was Lieberman. The democratic party is falling apart, and no matter how the media especially MSNBC tries to talk against McCain and the republicans it's not going to work. There will always be people like Pat Buchanon around who will not just let Chris Matthews and the rest of MSNBC get away with everything they are trying to sell the American people. Newt Gingridge was also great tonight when he told the media guy all the things Sarah Palin has done and then told the reporter Obama has done nothing, then he looked at the reporter and said tell me one thing Obama has ever done and the reporter just looked at Gingridge and said I have to let you go now! It was a great convention night!!! McCain/Palin 2008

I know everyone wants the rich to pay but do think of the out come, since when is it a crime to be wealthy and successful in america? The rich are already paying a great deal of the taxes inour country. Its simple mathematics and common sense. If the wealthy are pinched too tight they will not take risk that they normally would, they will spend less all together. This country was built on risk and when theres money the economy has no choice but to rise. I am not rich and a democrat but I just have to go outside my door and can see that people spend less when they have less. The point is if the rich do not invest in companies via stocks, loans,or mutual funds buissiness will suffer and shut down. A inventor is only as good as his financial backers. If not think about the waitresses, store clerks, and anyone who relies on tips...they will get less because people only spend when their happy and successful

You are descibing the failed policies of the current adminstration. It is called "supply side economics" I liked the name George H.W. Bush gave it, "Voodoo economics." I have news for you, the rich are not taking risks now, they are just enjoying their increased wealth. The rich can afford to pay more taxes.

Apparently you have not been following investments in carbon trading, clean energy, and new technologies here in the US. Tax those companies too much, and all of those jobs will go overseas. Tax the investors too much and they will put their money into foreign investments that don't earn "income" in the US.

I never knew I would have the unfortunate experience of watching a Judas in the flesh. Looking and speaking like ???the joker??? you would never believe Joe LIEberman was once on a democratic ticket. He strikes me as an opportunist politician who just blew his political career right down the toilet should McCain lose. I hope he does and I hope he is toast.

Generally, I looked at the crowd at the RNC, which was predominantly white except for a smattering of other ethnic people. Is this the face of America? Are the policies of the RNC so skewed towards one group they have become polarized? If I was part of the RNC hierarchy I would be concerned about its growth and future, especially as evidence shows the white population is on its way to being a minority group.

    • Posted By: joewoj @ 09/03/2008 1:35:10 AM

At least Lieberman makes a decision based on what is right, and not what is politically correct in order to feed and advantage his own political career. At least Lieberman supports someone who has guts and can make a decision based on values and not political polls. The Democratic party may attempt to look like America, but it is always orchestrated for political gain. In reality, the leaders of the Dems are racist, elitists, and very often liars. Don't criticize the Repubs, unless you are sure the Dems truly care and have the heartfelt goal of REAL change, not artificial, look good change

      • Posted By: TheVigil @ 09/03/2008 3:11:59 AM

He needs to switch his party affiliation already. He has next to no support left among the left, but he keeps trying to flap his former support and act like things are still all good. It's disrespectful to try to claim the values that would get you liberal support and yet consistently vote in support of the Iraq War and foment war with Iran. It goes against everything the Democratic Party stands for right now. He calls himself an "Independent Democrat", but he's lost the right to the title.

I will also just come out and say it - I think the man wants to tie us inextricably to Israel, policywise. I don't want the U.S. to ideologically align itself with any religious state, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or otherwise. It goes against the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment and there are really good reasons not to - avoiding entanglements in holy wars being one of the big ones.

        • Posted By: tman445 @ 09/03/2008 10:59:40 AM

Do any of you Republicans really believe that if the Dems had chosen a woman to be president/VP that Big Mac would have chosen a woman as his VP? I think I already know the answer to that question. Big Mac had to do something to energize his party and that was a political move pure and simple. Whether it was the right move is yet to be determined.

      • Posted By: spicegirl @ 09/03/2008 2:07:56 AM

You seem to be skewed cockeyed like the policies of your party. It is the republicans who are racists. Have you ever seen a black redneck? Because someone has the ambition to educate himself or herself does not make he or she an elitist. It takes grit, determination and courage to pull yourself up and sacrifice for that education. It did not come on a platter and it did not come cheap. To generalize and call Dems liars is disingenuous. You need to cite examples to be credible. Now I can tell you Palin lied. She was for the bridge to nowhere and when it became politically expedient she was against. She used the services of lobbyist and obtained $27million in earmarks, a system that McCain detests. Shall I continue? When it come to lies and being pseudo look to your own party for they are masters at this game. If you are really looking for Change that you can believe in then it is Obama/Biden that will give it to you. Your party is washed up! They cannot even come up with their own theme and is parroting Obama with Change and fired up. Boring boring boring.

So you think it look good huh? Should we count that as a vote from you?

  • Posted By: patriotusa1776 @ 09/03/2008 3:44:24 AM

The saddest thing of all is that too many people make their judgments on which party's nominee they will vote for based on their personal feelings, the price of gas, and unrealistic views of human reality. George Bush may not have always made the most popular decisions, but a true leader isn't in place to win a popularity contest. Leading means making hard decisions, and President Bush has done that. Obama is popular because the President isn't. However, Obama does have the ability to speak well and engender mass support. Obama will be the worst choice for president simply because he is too controlling and too willing to appease the world community by not standing for America first. His color, age and experience are not deciding factors. Our country exists because we have a spirit of democracy and patriotism. To hell with the European Union and any other country that doesn't support us. We don't need to compete in the "Popularity" contest. Lets elect a president that will NOT try to appease other nations, that ISN"T afraid to fight for our security, that WON"T ignore reality and that DOES NOT want "Change" that hurts our existence as a country. Lets put the USA first. If you love Obama, you would be better off in the European Union. Please leave my country alone! DO NOT LET Obama DESTROY OUR SOVREIGNITY AND OUR DIGNITY!

    • Posted By: freshMeat @ 09/03/2008 4:17:45 AM

Obama can't be any worse then Bush. Bush can not even inspire 200 Republicans but Obama on the other hand... well I rest my case. But I guess in your eyes those 85K are not American enough.

      • Posted By: Senator Snort @ 09/03/2008 10:55:05 AM

I had to laugh at the Obama coronation...talks of energy conservation in front of 85k or so people in a football stadium (wonder how many were season ticket holders0) at night...wonder what the energy consumption was (that would be wasted electricity Meathead) as compared to the Pepsi Center. And 85K would be the less than size of say Billings, Montana. I doubt if Billings would be a significant sample size to measure patriotism.

      • Posted By: Appalachian American @ 09/03/2008 6:48:34 AM

Oh yeah! Has Bush tried to eliminate the 2nd Amendment? Obama criticized the Supreme Court's decision on the 2nd Amendment, his voting record shows that he was told how to vote by his seniors. I understand that he did have a leadership role once.....he joined the Cub Scouts as a youngster. The Den Mother, let him lead the Den to the van in the parking lot, he made a wrong turn and ending up at another picnic shelter.

The Gift of Gab is not a requirement or qualification for good leadership or the Presidency. Your a liberal...what if Stephen Hawking wanted to run?? Would he not be qualified simply because he does not speak in the same rousing manner as Obama....you make me laugh

        • Posted By: freshMeat @ 09/03/2008 4:58:53 AM

I'm and independent my friend never voted for Clinton only voted for Kerry because I was smart enough to see 4 more years of Bush meant disaster. Stephen Hawking is still a step up from Bush... he is WAAAY smarter.

Back to the point... you are right executive experience like Palins qualifies you as a leader... ooops wait Bush had more experience as governor of Texas some good that experience did him or us.

    • Posted By: brinder @ 09/03/2008 9:44:17 AM

Patriot... Please explain to us how engendering friendship and partnership with other nations makes us any less secure. History seems to conclude otherwise. Strong alliances = SECURITY.

The fact that Mr. Obama is able to generate mass support for his message is exactly what will make him an effective president. The only way to clear away the debris of status quo will be through the overwhelming support of the people. Without it, we are all left to the mercy of monied special interests.

    • Posted By: brinder @ 09/03/2008 9:36:21 AM

Please explain how engendering friendship and partnership with other nations makes ours weaker. It seems to me that strong alliances strengthen US. They certainly don't threaten our sovereignty. The fact that Obama is capable of creating mass popular support is exactly why he will make an effective president. Think about it.

  • Posted By: freshMeat @ 09/03/2008 4:11:59 AM

patriotusa1776: Yes democrats are rats and republicans are perfect. Oooh wait... Republicans have given us 8 years of Bush, who is so popular that he can not even make it to his own parties convention. As Laura said Bush gave 50 million Iraqis and Afgans democracy yet he can't figure out how to help 50 million uninsured Americans with adequate Health care. My retired parents can't get affordable health insurance and only way they qualify for MedaCare is if they divorce. That is way as in Independent I am voting for Obama.

    • Posted By: Senator Snort @ 09/03/2008 10:43:15 AM

Speaking of unpopularity, the democratic Congeess is hovering right around 10%. The economy was doing pretty good (check the dow jones and S&P 500 graphs from 2002 to 2006) until the dems took over in 2006.

    • Posted By: patriotusa1776 @ 09/03/2008 4:35:03 AM

so your saying your voting for Obama to support a socialist ideal like "Universal Health care" ?? You should be a Democrat. Maybe instead of hammering on Health Care, ask why the Welfare Crowd gets better health care than your parents...that is the appropriate issue to focus on. Don't blame Bush...I dont believe in universal health care...let people work for what they need.

      • Posted By: freshMeat @ 09/03/2008 4:52:08 AM

No I am saying that the system is broken fix it rather then borrow money from China to fight wars. Don't blame Bush? Okay I'll blame Bill Clinton oh wait he's been out of the office for 8 years. BTW retired people, unless they've married rich and own 11+ homes, can't "work for what they need". I don't believe in welfare i think its a band-aid on a bigger problem; but the richest country in the world needs to take of their poor. Its what Jesus would do; I don't think he would turn is back on people.

Why McCain selected Mrs. Palin (the secret operation) (VP or Ralph Nader = Palinader)

As it stand right now the McCain Campaign is struggling to the point of losing the election. Even if the polls boaster they are closing the gap, we all know that isn't true. McCain could easily lose in an electoral landslide. I must say, I too, like so many of you laughed so hard , a few times even, at McCain's choice for VP and the speech she gave. That speech seemed to have a juvenile tone to it. It was like a person interviewing for a typical everyday -Joe job. When I stopped laughing I felt sad for Mrs. Palin when I realized how serious this choice is and why McCain selected Mrs. Palin to be his VP while passing on more seasoned candidates. Here's why McCain selected Palin. You see it doesn't matter who Palin is, as long as she is a women. It doesn't matter if she is or isn't qualified. It doesn't matter if McCain doesn't know her or if he disagrees with her. The idea (strategy) was formulated before McCain and his advisers chose Mrs. Palin. The only question was which woman will he choose. A pipe line from Canada to Alaska made the choice easier. The McCain strategy is to select a women (any women) to implement a well thought out plan. McCain's secret weapon is (a women ) operation "Tear Drop".

Oh I don't believe that the McCain Campaign is struggling. I think this is a very good Pres race and it is just getting started. I love the debating (as long as people keep to the issues and don't discount other opinions) Elections in this country are always exciting!

Under Nixon and Ford, the United States built 100 nuclear power plants and American owned Westinghouse was the world leader in nuclear plant construction. In the last thirty years there has not been a single new nuclear power plant built in the United States. Today John McCain calls for the rapid expansion of forty-five new nuclear power plants. Barack Obama and some of the Democratic leadership want to study the issue for another thirty years.

Look folks do the simple math. Our current 108 nuclear power produce 20 twenty percent of our electric power as opposed to the 80 percent that is produced in France. If 108 nuclear power plants can produce twenty percent of our electricity power than 500 nuclear power plants can produce 100 percent of our electricity needs without a single pound of greenhouse gas emissions. Naturally we are not going to tear down hydroelectric dams and geothermal plants and wind production of electricity. So we will not need 500 nuclear power plants but if we could only double the number of plants we would be on our way to relative energy independence. John McCain???s proposal for rapid construction of 45 nuclear power plants accompanied by increased offshore drilling, investment in solar energy and renewable energy and energy conservation technologies will help us attain relative energy independence both over the short-term and longterm. Instead of studying the issue for another 30 years John McCain wants to do something now.

You are aware that over the last 28 years, (of your 30), Republicans have been in the White House for 20 of them. In that time, I think contol of Congress is probably split about 50/50. That being the case, how exactly does having another republican in the White House get more power plants built? Bush had the Congress all to himself until 2006 to do his bidding, and he didn't build any new 'nook-you-lerr' (nuclear) plants in that time.

How and where are we going to dispose of the waste? In your back yard? France has a total population of 62 million people. The US has over 300 million, that's 5 times the nuclear waste. I agree Nuclear Power should be look into, but before we we open up the flood gate, let's consider the consequences. Obama is open to Nuclear power. But he wants resolution on where to store the waste. Putting it all in Nevada mountain is not a solution. It's not big enough to store all of the potential waste. You got a suggestion?

the majority of the "working" class people are NOT democrats. Most democrats are rats running the race in their European car, drinking starbucks while they listen to music, driving to their job as a bookstore clerk in the CITY. Republicans are americans who work for a living. Find me ONE welfare recipeint with 5 kids that votes Republican AND ACTUALLY REALIZES WHAT THEIR DOING! Bet none of you liberals can find one. Nobody wants to lose their paycheck and government cheese and WIC and all the other free things they get. TOTAL GARBAGE.!!! The dems are mostly fake and idealistic. They want to appease Europe and weaken the US just to get back at Bush....how very very sad. I work for a living but can't afford a new home. Where's my WELFARE!? Wheres my FREE MONEY!? Guess what, I dont care. I take pride in my country and pride in working hard to make my own way without help! THOSE ARE THE TRAITS OF AN AMERICAN! it doesnt matter what party your in. But Obama isnt one of us. Neither are most of the ignorant fools that he counts on to vote for him. YOU liberals take your nonsense and move to Canada or the European Union.

Why is this not in the Bible it would make for a great story. Be more like Jesus. Hmm so first become Jewish. Then care more about others than you do for yourself. I guess lastly don't cast judgement lest ye be judged. Jesus was pretty cool. Too bad none of those things even remotely fit the description of the crap you are spouting.

His style has consistently been the same as he has dealt with the people of Connecticut. All of these and more can be aplied to Lieberman. Lieberman will have to deal with himself, before he can again be taken serious in American politics!

    • Posted By: BexHi @ 09/03/2008 9:27:11 AM

Dear Druboats, have you ever thought what the reason may be - why we went into war???? Did you forget what those animals did to us on 9/11 as well as in the past and in addition had many more planned attacks, Did not enough people die already in those attacks. Perhaps it did hit close to home for you, however as myself living in N.Y. it hit home very close with people we worked with and new got injured or passed away in these attacks. So the only way to stop these attacks from coming was by going into war against these thugs in the middle east and beat them all so we once again have our freedom and do not have to be afraid that we may be hit again and loose more of our innocent people. Our troops have done a phenomenal job fighting in Iraq and as EVERYBODY including the media knows it (of course they wont admit it since after all at first they couldnt beleiv eit could be done) but now that the success has been so obvious as well as so many planned attacks have been thwarted by our intelligence and fighters in Iraq - this is money that should come out of our taxes not for these bogas programs Obama wants to initiate. Perhaps you have not much experience in business, however, let me tell you, by cutting taxes for the rich - the same people who run the big companies and employ our citizens - these "rich" people who run the companies will be able to provide us at a lower cost - of you tax these "rich" people/big companies it will only raise the prices of everything. Since Bush has been in office he has managed to cut our taxes giving us tax refunds and improved our economy (which once again the media will not announce since after all Dems. only like to bash and lie about what Republicans offer). So get real, I know you dont want to pay more taxes or pay so much for gasoline nor would you like to live in fear of being hit by our enemies, this is exactly what our future President John McCain will be able to help us with. Unlike Obama who will definitely raise our taxes just like he did in his own state, he will not support the war since he doesnt care when people hit our country and he will not allow us to drill in the US for oil/gas and so we would all continue to pay through the roof for our gasoline. All this is not what you want, nor does anybody in our country want. So, its ok to vote for Sen. John McCain even though he is not a leader of your Dem. party since he has the right principles and leadership to run our country just like he has ALREADY proven to us through his experience. All that would happen is that he will help you have a better life!

      • Posted By: dsqard @ 09/03/2008 10:07:47 AM

You haven't done your homework. There is ABSOLUTELY no connection between what happened on September 11, 2001 and Iraq. If you want to make war, make sure you are doing it in the right place. There has not been success in Iraq. If we pulled out tomorrow there would be full scale civil war. We have done nothing but destablize that country and made it a haven for Al Qeda which it was not before the war. Stop perpetuating the lies of the deciever. I don't know about you but I do not feel safer after 8 years of the Bush administration. Republicans are always saying less government but I have seen my freedom and privacy shrink in the last eight years. Warrantless wiretapping and tourturing "detainees" that haven't even formally been charged with anything. We have sold this country down the road for oil and I don't know if we will ever recover. By the way, I am not a Democrat and I served for ten years in the military.

      • Posted By: GD38 @ 09/03/2008 10:04:08 AM

"Those animals" - You mean Osama Bin Laden the SAUDI? Yes he is Saudi born NOT IRAQI. The last time I checked it was his Al-Qaeda faction that killed 3,000 innocent Americans. Hmm when was the last time Iraq attacked the U.S.? Oh what was that? Never?.

Nice of you to lump all deep skinned cultures into one group. You probably think Pakistan and India are the same place and are part of the Middle East. Sigh. You should be required to take a test before you can vote. It's just frightening.

      • Posted By: just me & my 2 cents @ 09/03/2008 10:00:24 AM

I remember why we went into the war ... weapons of mass destruction. Where are they? Bin Laden was the alleged culprit who committed the 9/11 atrocity. Where is he? As for the "thugs" that we are fighting in the Middle East, I thought World War II was supposed to beat them all so we can "once again have our freedom and not have to be afraid that we may be hit again and LOSE more of our innocent people." Face it, war has been around since before Jesus was born and will be here till the end of time. Don't use that as an excuse. Next, what constitutes "rich"? My family sure seem to pay a hell of a lot in taxes and I have yet to see one of these Bush tax refunds come to my address.

re "NEWSWEEK contributor Michael Gerson helped craft some of President George W. Bush's most memorable speeches."

Seriously do you live in a different world or are you talking of another George W Bush when say George W Bush's "memorable speeches." Where in the world are the memorable speeches? Please tell us where the supposedly ???memorable speeches??? were made... please give us link(s); name one place. George W. Bush's speeches were never brilliant... Economy is good; America is safe from Al Qaeda; Al Qaeda are on the run all over the world; America is winning??? America must act now to wipe out the axis of evil; Sadam sought and obtained Uranium from the tiny country of Niger. Bush's speeches were nothing but tired old Republican clichés recycled to scare people. No; I can't think of any memorable speech from Bush!

in response to the comment below by BexHi, do you seriously believe that Obama is a Muslim? really? how ignorant of you. you need to check into his background and how he was raised. he was not raised as a Muslim, he was raised a Christian and he is a Christian. you are assuming because of his name that he is a Muslim. not true in the least. as far as raising taxes for Americans, Obama only wants to raise taxes on the wealthy ones. it seems they have been getting most of the tax breaks in this administration. go to his website and read about him and his plans for America.
PS I am not a democrat, just so you know, I just think that comments like like Obama is a Muslim are ridiculous and ignorant. it sounds like you are making up lies about Obama. where did you here this crap? it is not true, none of it. you sound like a very prejudiced person, too. not all Muslims are bad people - just the extremists (however, i wish more normal, peaceful Muslims would speak out against the extremist Muslims). i am currently and seriously doing my research on both McCaine and Obama so i can make an informed decision on who i want to vote for. i will watch the debates with great interest. if i feel at all that McCaine will lead this country in the same way that Bush/Cheney did, then i will have a huge problem with that.

When somebody befriends AND follows people of a religion which Obama DID. He is a Christian and I know that however he is a sympathetic supporter (friend and follower) of those who tried to destroy our country and this makes him part of those groups otherwise he would not choose to befriend/follow those leaders. Whom you befriend follow shows who you are.
I have done research for many years and have read many articles which the media would never publicise since they support the left however we cannot hide the truth - and so I am not making up stories!
I want a leader who is proud of country, wants to help our country and not someone who has repeatedly said our country is bad and complained about our country. Complaining about people being poor and then wanting to tax the rich so all of our products will cost us more (since the rich are the ones who own the companies). You tax them the tax gets passed onto us - we pay for the goods and will only end up paying more if the rich have to pay moe taxes - this is a simple finance issue!

Maramara: He has passed legislation that other people have come up with and signed his name to them! In Chicago he helped Rezko get Millions in state money to rehab buildings and when the buildings were done people moved in, shortly after these people had to move because the work that had been done in these buildings was so bad they were unlivable in! Anyone can make proposals thats all Obama has! He will never do anything good for this country, he is too inexperienced!!
Enough with Obama's dreaded path he wants to lead this country into! No Experience!!!

Can you pick a single side of your mouth to speak from? If Obama only gets credit for voting on bills in the IL State Senate, then how can he be solely responsible for a developer getting state funds?

If you make a well reasoned argument, I may disagree, but I will respect the argument. Your statement isn't worth more thought than this response.
