Oh and for the ignorants... Most of europe offer 4 weeks paid vacation to all their citizens.. What you people do not understand, we rather have a good quality life than quantity.. Living a mega homes or driving sports cars is not what brings quality life or happiness... this is what most of you have not understood!! we rather have good safety nets and vacations and be happy!!

Europeans don't have a pot to piss in and never will.

This median household income baffles me. I've checked around. Very few of my neighbors and none of my friends have household incomes of $50000. Most have 2 people working and earn less than $42000 combined. The hourly wage around here is $10.75 or less and we have low unemployment. Play all you want with the numbers, Most of those I know are on thin ice or already sinking. We feel we are symbolic of most of main stream USA. Somebody need to go out and take a look at the us and not just the numbers on a spreadsheet projection as the Census Bureau seems to be doing.

Median income means 1/2 earn less than 50K and 1/2 earn more than 50K, not that most people earn that amount. If you are earning less than 50K, more than likely you are uneducated and unskilled. Sorry but those of us who went to school shouldn't have to pay for those who didn't. If you studied very hard and received an "A", would you give half of your grade to the bum who always gets an "F"?

And as far as a national energy policy- I haven't seen anything come out of the Democratic controlled Congress which currently has a 9% approval rate. Plus they have never tried to solve the 8000 lawsuits against oil companies drilling on current leases by environmentalists since those environmentalists current send a lot of money to the Dems.

commomsnese- the point of the article was to show it is unfair to compare current the economy to 8 years ago in 2000. The economy in 2000 was coming off the irrational exuberance of the 1990s and the tech bubble which inflated incomes. As far as Obama and taxes, he is all over theplace.- I guess Obama said something different in April in the interview with Maria Bartiromo. Under 75k would only get tax relief. Of course as I said he was trying to get the primary and appealing to his base. I don;t believe his current plan because he is appealing to the moderates and his history is anything but ,being the most liberal Senator. So I have to believe he is the tax and spend Democrat that he will revert to when elected. MoveOn, Daily Kos and George Soros are not bank rolling him because he is a moderate, he is as far left as you can go and his social programs will damage the economy. It is very simple, I don;t trust him.http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_15/b4079017876246_page_2.htm

To gioball 22, your spelling ability is terrible along with your implied statement that the "good ole USA" has top quality healthcare. Is your real name Rip Van Winkle? Have you been asleep for a long time? Perhaps you've been a patient at a quiet sanitarium? The "good ole USA" ranks last (20th out of 20), in all aspects of healthcare, among the top 20 industrialized nations of the world. Check your facts before needlessly using up bandwidth.

REPUBLICANS vs. DEMOCRATS ON THE ECONOMY....Did you know that Democratic presidents are better for the economy than Republicans? Sure you did. I pointed this out two years ago, back when my readership numbered in the dozens, and more recently Michael Kinsley ran the numbers in the LA Times and came to the same conclusion.

The results are simple: Democratic presidents have consistently higher economic growth and consistently lower unemployment than Republican presidents. If you add in a time lag, you get the same result. If you eliminate the best and worst presidents, you get the same result. If you take a look at other economic indicators, you get the same result. There's just no way around it: Democratic administrations are better for the economy than Republican administrations

    • Posted By: delfairchild @ 09/03/2008 7:04:14 PM

You have to remember that Republicans were once the Democrats and the Democrats were once Republicans. Ronald Reagan was a Democrat his whole life until what the Democrats stood for changed and he turned Republican., The "Democrats" who run the Democratic party today are not True Democrats. They are more socialist.
In 1787, the states got together to form a Consittuion as the Federal Government couldn't work in the present state of affairs. Countries in Europe were leary of doing business with 13 independant states, so they got together and wrote the Constitution. The Federal Government was even asked to have a standing army to protect the states, but there wasn't any money to have an Army. A number of states would not sign onto the Constituion as they thought that there would be a King or even the Pope as head of the Federal union, so they got together again and came up with the 12 original "Bill of Rights". Ten (10) of them were adopted to show that the states (People) had control over the Federal government.

If you get rid of any one of the 10 original "Bill of Rights" (now 27 Amendments) you will leave the Federal Government open for a change called Dictatorship or maybe a Kingdom. Ask yourself why the Democrats of today want to trample on the 2nd Amendment (Gun Control) and on the 1st Amendment (Fairness Doctrine). Get rid of those two that protect the rest, and you can rule the USA for as long as your army lets you.
This is why it is extremely important to elect someone that will nominate Supreme Court Justices that view the Constitution as the "Bill of Rights" for all Americans. Not just a few.

Median family income is lower now than it was eight years ago. During that same period, inflation has exacerbated the problem. By standing on his head, squinting, and sticking his tongue out just right, the author argues that some of us are really better off, but we just can't tell. The real conclusion to be drawn seems to be that the author is doing just fine fnancially, but he'd like an opportunity to bash immigrants (though perhaps merely because it is fashionable to blame them for all our nation's real and imaginary ills at present).

John McCain has offered yet more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires like himself and his wife. The middle class will pick up the tab, and middle class children will have to pay down the national debt later.

Obama will at least give the middle class a break for a change, and will expect the ultra-wealthy to pay their fair share of the tax burden in this country.

The Republicans have ruined the nation's economic prospects, turning a prudent budget surplus into horrendously irresponsible budget deficits and mounting national debt. We are now exporting jobs faster than we export manufactured goods nd we have no national energy policy. These are serious problems and deserve the attention of thoughtful, intelligent leaders. I don't trust a guy who graduated in the BOTTOM ONE PERCENT of his class to handle such complicated matters.

Fact: Studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) find a correlation of brain size with IQ of about 0.40. Larger brains contain more neurons and synapses and process information faster. Race differences in brain size are present at birth. By adulthood, East Asians average 1 cubic inch more cranial capacity than Whites who average 5 cubic inches more than Blacks.

A ballot initiative in California:- granted this is from a conservative newspaper-
Hard-line socialists in California, where voters have the power to bypass the constitutionally prescribed lawmaking process and legislate via the ballot box, want the state to impose a wealth tax. They want to ???soak the rich??? in a state where the rich regularly get soaked and the state still can???t make ends meet; two months into the new fiscal year, the state budget already is $15.2 billion in the red.
The socialists want a 17.5 percent tax on every dollar a couple earns above $250,000 and 35 percent above $500,000; for singles, the income thresholds would be $150,000 and $350,000, respectively.
That would raise the marginal rate paid by someone making $1 million from 35 percent to 61 percent, and increase the taxes paid by 74 percent. ???Marginal rates this high would undoubtedly curtail capital formation, productive investment, and economic activity,??? the foundation observed. The socialists??? response: Viva la revolución!
Next door in Nevada, the marginal rate is 28 percent, but if the rich try to flee there, the new law would seize 55 percent of their assets exceeding $20 million and hit them with the ???Hasta La Vista Tax??? of 36.8 percent on assets, including unrealized appreciation, above $5 million. The latter tax also would be imposed on people who try to beat the wealth tax by dying; the rich who choose to live, however, would pay a one-time tax of 55 percent on their assets above $20 million. We did the math: People worth upward of $50 million would be better off dying, which, we suppose, is the whole point of this exercise.
The coup de grace? ???The money raised would be used to eliminate the state???s budget deficit and for purchasing controlling shares in large corporations,??? the foundation said. Wouldn???t it be easier to pull a Fidel Castro and collectivize?

Socialized healthcare will break the bank. Stock trading value reflects the fears of the business sector finding Obama signing huge tax increases and mandating health insurance coverage. The ILLEGAL immigrant population must be brought under control. No amount of federal money will fix the damage illegal immigration is doing and taxing to pacify those who require healthcare will simply lower the fringe benefits of those who earn them fairly. popularity isn't always the right path.

So the bottom line to this article is that since the math "says so" then all that people are personally experiencing (rich, middle class and poor) is incorrect. Hopefully the author can call my mortgage company, credit card companies and insurance companies and tell them that I'll be caught up on payments any day now since the numbers show that I'm doing far better today than a few years ago and I'll be finding that windfall of cash somewhere in my yard.

    • Posted By: antoha @ 09/03/2008 5:22:58 PM

Hey Flemdog - if you aren't cought up on your payments - OBAMA won't save you. Learn to manage your finances better and stop buying things you cann't afford

Hey wildlifeusa, you live in the greatest country in the world. Without the usa there probably wouldnt even be a Sweeden, Norway, or the Netherlands. I to have lived in a socialistic country where your taxed to the max and pay nothing for healthcare, when you can find it. I will take the good ole USA anyday of the week, along with all the freedom it grants me. If your so miserable, please feel free to exit this wonderful country, your opinions wouldnt be missed.

I couldn't disagree more with the conclusion; though the analysis made sense, the final paragraph is merely an uninformed, inaccurate, overgenaralized mis-statement of fact. With the author's credentials it is unfortunate to display this glaring inability for real-world application.

Locally (southeast US) and nationally a large part of Obama's base includes those yearning for action.

Economic realities must not be apparent to the author in middle-class Bethesda or Boston.

    1. No mention is given to those who are uninsured, and functionally below middle class.
    2. Many, many americans are Under-employed just to make ends meet, hence, #1.
    3. Series of corporate buyours, mergers and failures have placed educated, experienced, and somewhat older workers back to square 1, at a time when they may also be dealing with health issues.
    4. Savings which many had acquired wisely and put into real estate or financial markets, which are both at a trough right now, are either inacessible due to risk of losing capital, or wiped out entirely.

I am not an economist.....your figures really prove nothing, and make me Yawn! This is what I observe every day.

wildlifeusa- one thing about statistics on Democratic and Republican presidencies. The reason why Clinton did so well during his presidency was because the tech bubble brought in record government revenue. Can't say Clinton had anything to do with that. It was a result of technology maturing. Also many of the economic benefits enjoyed druinig the Clinton years were a result of policies started during the Reagan and Bush years. Clinton was the benefactor.. Statistics ignore the policies of one Presidency affecting another. Like the Carter years affecting the stats during the Reagan administration. THe stats can be misleading.
On Obama- why did he never have a meeting of the subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations committee on Afghanistan as chair. Seems irresponsible to me. How many of his legislative bills actually made it to law?

For all who argue my previous post... Sweeden, norway and the netherlands are the happiest and where you will find the best quality of life.. There are no crimes, no one living on the streets, good health care for all, good education for all. Those countries are socialists! and believe me, no one envy the usa.
