The Real Economic Scorecard

The economic report card is crap... and not because it isn't acurrate but because it doesn't make sense to generalize the american population. In my eyes our economic report card will never look good until we realize that a family of four cannot live in this economy on $21,000 a year and a family of one can barely live on that rediculous poverty line. Also I love how samuelson used the median household income and not the average... of course it isn't going to look that bad when you use the number in the middle. i just disagree... things are economically bad in this country. Maybe the numbers lie.

What a load of rubbish. If rising health insurance costs (usually for decreasing coverage) is cutting into take home pay, by definition, we are worse off than we were previously. There's less money for savings, less money for college, less money for discretionary purchases, not to mention less money for paying the regualr bills, buying groceries, gas, clothing, etc. Samuelson only mentions inflation in passing in the next to last paragraph of his article. What has been the cululative rate of inflation on the last 5-7 years. I can tell you for a fact the basket of groceries that used to cost me $30 bucks just five years ago now costs double that. By contrast my wife has not had a raise in five years and I, as a self-employed designer, have had to raise my rates and take on more and more projects just to maintain our standard of living.

But we can reasonably conclude that these government statistics provide evidence that directly contradicts the argument that the economy does better on average under Republican administrations. With lagged effects and other causes considered, the difference may be insignificant, but the economy may actually perform worse under Republicans.
