Hear, hear! I don't like her views on abortion, but that doesn't mean we have to bash her as a mother and soon-to-be grandmother. However, the Republicans shouldn't trot her out as an exemplary person for deciding to have a Down's Syndrome child. Nor should the same Republicans that don't want people to bash the Palins on the teenage pregnancy thrust her teenage daughter out for all to see as an example for pregnant teenagers everywhere.

I can agree with you that Sarah's family choices should not grist for the mill. I do think if you choose to bring 5 children in the world, you should recognize that parenting them will take a great deal of time and energy and there are some jobs that make parenting more possible than others. I suspect that the Vice Presidency is not one of those jobs that leaves you with that kind of flexibility. However, she has made her choice and it is not for us to argue with it or, worse, condemn her for it. It is reasonable to wonder whether she can truely devote hereself to the rigors of being the number two person in government (or the number 1, if something happens to McCain). It is a sacrifice to take the kind of job where you might not be able to be there for your family, but I think that decision was hers to make.

On the other hand....there are plenty of political questions to scrutinize in this pick, including those regarding her experience with or even exposure to the national stage; her extreme positions on choice, creationism, sex education, etc., which are not by the majority of Americans (even if they are held disproportionately by Republicans); her involvement with an abuse of power case that is still very much up in the air; her affiliation with, if not membership in, a radical Alaskan independence organization that has, at times, espoused secession, to mention just a few. These questions are real and relevant and should be the subject of much scrutiny and debate as we determine if we want to vote for her.

Lastly, while I think the National Esquire-like headlines about whether her baby is even hers are pretty stupid. If, however, a real story ever came to light that she, in fact, did lie about whose baby he is, the fact that she lied would be germane to her suitability for the VIce Presidency. Not what she lied about, mind you, but the fact that she lied (if she did).

    On the other

I am stunned at the polarizing effect she is having.. people either love or hate her. As a died in the wool democrat, business woman turned stay at home mom.. I LOVE her!!! I would not do what she is doing I damn sure want the opportunity to do so. I will support her & wish her & her family well. I do find that I can relate to her and that makes her likeable to me. I am offended by the comments that have been posted against her. Go McCain!!

    • Posted By: jjla01 @ 09/03/2008 4:01:38 PM

This is exactly what the Republicans want. For you to be blinded by her competency and go "awww..she's a mom. She's like me..I'll vote her." You're not a democrat for the sole reason that you're putting personality over her political views and competency.

That's the most ignorant thing I can see.

I really am not interested in "The Mommy Wars," nor in hearing about Palin's 17 year old pregnant daughter. All that speculation is simply a smoke screen and detracts from the real issues. What I want to hear about is the current investigation into her alleged abuse of power as Alaska's governor. I want to learn more about the $6.1million in federal funds given to a town with less than 9,000 residents. What and when did she change her mind about earmarks? Exactly how does some time spent on a city council...especially of such a tiny town...a couple of terms as mayor, topped off with 20 months as governor qualify her as ready for taking over the presidency?

    • Posted By: bojack27 @ 09/03/2008 3:33:41 PM

First of all she is not running for presidency .... she is in the vice-presidents position... secondly ... how does running a community organization, working a total of 100 days in the Senate, and campaigning for President qualifies Obama as ready to take over the job as president?

everybody is saying that Alaska has 700,000 residents and so on...... but have said how many people Obama has been in charge of , how big his budget was.... Oh yeah he just said his campaign is his experience in running a executive size branch... get real.... he has a few hundred million being raised compared to a 11 billion dollar budget governor Palin has been in charge of.... oh by the way he (Obama) doesn't even handle the budget his campaign managers do....

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:59:56 PM

You won't win the argument. McCain stepped in it big time when he took away his only real point of argument against Obama in this race. No longer can he harp on the experience canard. It was a stupid mistake, but I'm glad he made it.

I am having these same debates with women in my office and in my family... what I have found is a consistent pattern of liberal/democratic women who are condemning or judging her... It's ridiculous... My mother and I had this argument for an hour yesterday and I told her she should be ashamed of herself... if Palin were a democrat like her my mother would be absolutely rabidly defending her every choice... instead she is criticizing and ridiculing her... It made me sick. I'm a hospital administrator and single mother of 3 and she calls me her "hero" for the sacrifices I have made to be "supermom"... she is a college professor and mother of 5! But I am a conservative and she is a liberal... that's the difference...

Rick Davis (McCain's campaign manager) - "This election is not about issues," said Davis. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."
They are the ones creating the mess to take everyone's attention away from John McCain and the issues at hand.
We will see in November if Americans really are the stupidest people on the planet. As P.T. Barnum said "You will never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

"Right or wrong, women overall still shoulder an unfair burden when it comes to childcare and household duties. But how each family strikes that balance is hard enough without a shrill chorus questioning every move." This is a difficult statement to disagree with. Our society is filled with imbalances based on gender, race, religion, weight, height, etc. etc. etc. A VP candidate should not be subject to one set of standards if a woman and another altogether if a man. So let me go on the record in saying the following - Any parent, whether they happen to be the mother or the father, who chooses to pursue such a high profile, high pressure job when they have just welcomed a baby into their family, one who happens to be disabled on top of that, and also has a pregnant teenage daughter to counsel and protect from the glare of the media, is an awful parent. Can an awful parent be a fine VP or even president? Certainly. Would I vote for such a person? Not a chance, especially when they're claiming sole proprietorship of morality despite the fact that nothing could be further from the truth.

My mother is a successful business women with five children. She has worked as long as I can remember. I'm grown now with children of my own, and looking back I can't recall ever feeling like I missed out on anything because she worked full-time. Our family is very close and she has always been there when I needed her. I've also always felt that my getting pregnant at 18 was due to my indiscretion and not hers. Why can't a woman work and raise a family without getting so much heat for it? And why is there a double standard for wed and single mothers? A single mother is doing her best, and a married mother is picking work over children? Maybe she's doing her best , too!

    • Posted By: jjla01 @ 09/03/2008 3:59:02 PM

McCain wants a media circus and Palin show "family values" and not her competency of running a VP slot. It's not about the children, it's about the role and if she's prepared for it. She's not.

    • Posted By: dawgluvher @ 09/03/2008 3:56:36 PM

A woman CAN work and raise a family. My mother did it, too. But with a teen who is now pregnant, it makes you think that maybe more/different parenting should have been occuring. AND, when you have an infant that is 5 months old AND has downs syndrome, it seems to me that the VP job is not the best choice because it could be difficult to work a "flex" schedule.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 09/03/2008 3:53:16 PM

Palin can do anything she is qualified to do, like run Alaska, but look at her own statements. She hasn't bothered to learn about foreign policy, military policy, or national economic policy; so how is she qualified to run this country. Simple answer, shes not; and its got nothing to do with her gender or number of children.

How "Right Winged" is that for Your A!! Sarah & Her Husband Todd Palin was a 7 Yr. Member of this Alaskan Seccessionist Group !!!

    -------------------

Founder Of Group Palin Courted Professed "Hatred For The American Government"; Cursed "Damn Flag"

    By Greg Sargent - September 2, 2008, 6:10PM

The founder of the Alaska Independence Party -- a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years -- once professed his "hatred for the American government" and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag."

The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991, in an interview that's now housed at the Oral History Program in the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP.

"And I won't be buried under their damn flag,"

Vogler continued in the interview, which also touched on his disappointment with the American judicial system. "I'll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home."

At another point, Volger advocated renouncing allegiance to the United States. In the course of denouncing Federal regulation over land, he said:

"And then you get mad. And you say, the hell with them. And you renounce allegiance, and you pledge your efforts, your effects, your honor, your life to Alaska."

Palin has courted the group over the years.

3 years after the controversial interview, in 1994, Palin attended the group's annual convention, according to witnesses who spoke to ABC News' Jake Tapper. The McCain campaign is disputing her presence there, but Tapper found two people to attest to it.

The McCain campaign today produced Palin's voting registration records, and said they proved she was never a member of the party.

But she has repeatedly reached out to the group. The McCain campaign has confirmed she visited the group's 2000 convention, and she addressed its convention this year, as an incumbent governor whose oath of office includes upholding the Constitution of the United States.

Palin's husband, Todd Palin, was a member of the party from 1995-2002 with a brief exception in 2000.

It's worth noting that Vogler isn't just some figure from ancient history. He is still being hailed on AIP's site this year, the same year Palin addressed the group's convention.

As a Granddad, Gov. Palin's personal life is NOT an issue with me. Stick to the issues.

I am so SICK of the lack of leadership in this country. Congress plays their little partisan games while the taxpayer suffers and picks up their check.

Frankly, I will vote for ANYONE from "outside" Washington.

In all truthfulness, how could ANYONE do WORSE ??? Answer THAT, if you will !

Torture, illegal wire taps, Katrina (nice job Brownie) an energy policy determined by oil execs and Cheney, Roberto Gonzalez, outing a CIA agent (I thought that was treason during a war and got you shot in the head), And this is just the short list.

        • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:10:55 PM

          Agreed.

How many times have we been attacked by terrorists since 9/11? Think that is just luck? How low is the unemployment figures? Oh, yes, they are rising now - in light of cut backs due to energy costs (no drilling remember? Just inflate those tires) - and as in many cases in my town - the hike in minimum wage for small businesses. (Not Bush's policies)

          • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:22:39 PM

Bush is an unmitigated disaster. 70% of the population now knows it and has given him the lowest approval rating of any president since they've been keeping track, even lower than Nixon.

For you 30% crowd out there that still support this clown, then McCain is your man. He's running for Bush's third term. For the rest of the people, who actually have a functioning brain on in their skull, his candidacy is problematic, and Palin made it much more so.

They are SO serious. What a relief to have some normal people on a ticket for a change. I'm surprised that no one is talking about how masculine Todd Palin is and how effete Obama seems in comparison.

It's all just another case of "do as I say, not as I do." Bush/Cheyney are vehemently against gay rights , marriage, the whole nine yards. But Cheyney's gay daughter is just fine with them all.

Palin is totally in favor of teen pregnancy when it comes to her own daughter, but in Alaska she vetoed funding for a program that provided housing, education and support for unwed teen mothers. She's just another one who's pro-life until birth.

    • Posted By: bojack27 @ 09/03/2008 3:08:58 PM

Why should the government pay for teen pregnancies with tax payer's money? My daughter got pregnant her senior year in high school and I took care of her and let her live with me until she could get on her feet.. She has since graduated from high school, gotten her associates degree, and is enrolled in the University of Houston pursuing her Bachelors Degree. It is not the governments responsibility to raise children it is the parents and when you have family support everything will work out...

Are you criticizing her for supporting her own daughter? If she would have kicked her out and told her to get help else where then you would have complained about that... but now she supports her daughter and you are complaining....

At least she is pro-life and don't want to kill children or her grandchildren because she considers them an inconvience.....

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:17:04 PM

I agree. None of Palin's salary if elected should go to supporting this teen. It's the tax payers' money.

        • Posted By: bojack27 @ 09/03/2008 3:41:22 PM

So taking your line of reasoning .... none of the military personnel should support their families neither since it is the tax payer's money... no senator, no governor, no congressman or congresswoman, no police officer, no fireman, no 911 operator , no state troopers, no government employee should be able to spend tax payer's money.....

If you going to make a comment at least think it through........

          • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:56:14 PM

It's a joke. Palin, if elected, will be on the public payroll so effectively tax dollars will be used to support her teen and family.

    • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:03:35 PM

No - Palin supports Bristol. This is in keeping with her views as stated clearly.

She is also against welfare for popping babies out at will. I don't see her asking for welfare for Bristol. Again - in keeping with her views.

Cheney's daughter is gay - no denying it. As social conservatives, Cheney is not going to support gay marriage - it goes against humanity and history. However, in keeping with HIS views, he can object to his daughter's choice while still loving her and having compassion.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:18:32 PM

Of course she won't need welfare. She's well off. Now, to the rest that aren't, screw you. Typical right-wing hypocrisy.

      • Posted By: chelseafran @ 09/03/2008 3:16:36 PM

Sorry, nice spin, but not remotely on point. The aims of the program she vetoed was to keep teen mothers off of welfare. These young women seemed to have made the same "mistake" that her daughter did. And how can you say her own daughter not popping babies out at will? Oh right, she's not poor uneducated and possibly a minority.

And the current VP and the missus were proud as punch about their daughter and her partner's child. A right that they don't want to extend to gay women/men (who also have families BTW) who are not Cheney family members.

  • Posted By: kshephard @ 09/03/2008 2:55:13 PM

Don't children need their fathers just as much as they need their mothers? I think so. So why aren't we asking if Obama can handle being President while having two kids? This is totally a double standard.
Oh and how many of you had sex as teens? Yeah, I though so. You just didn't get caught or get pregnant. Get over it!

    • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:00:56 PM

5 is more that 2. Down's Syndrome is more challenging than normal.

We had sex as teens, and we used contraception. The right is basically saying that it's better for a teen to not be taught sex ed and end up pregnant, then for them to be given access to information and contraception and prevent that pregnancy. I have no choice to but conclude that the right's real problem is sex NOT resulting in procreation (something the Catholic church has condemned for years), not necessarily teen sex per se.

      • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:08:14 PM

Really? You always used contraception? Every single time? I doubt it.

Just like teens with contraception in hand often do not use it.

        • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:16:13 PM

          Yes. I did.

Contraception may not be 100% effective, and my not be used in the heat of the moment. However, some contraception is more effective than none at all and prayer.

          • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:34:59 PM

Wow! You really are one in a million.

Statistics show MANY kids with contraception do not use it. Unless Palin was present (sick thought) and applied the condom herself; abstinence view or not - she had NO WAY to control the outcome.

            • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:55:02 PM

Statistics show that 100% of kids without contraception don't use it. Palin was derelict.

  • Posted By: hollyp @ 09/03/2008 2:56:01 PM

Palin put out her choice to give birth to a special needs infant for discussion. (And I'm not ripping her on that.) Why then should we disallow discussion of her other parenting choices?

    • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:01:05 PM

Because Bristol's pregnancy is not a reflection of Palin's parenting. It is a reflection of a young adult making a choice - and getting pregnant.

Mothers across time have taught their children - and teens across time have defied those teachings. It is human and a mistake. Leaders are also human - as are their families.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:14:32 PM

So she gave her kid contraception? If she did know Bristol was active, and didn't then she was derelict. If she didn't know, then she wasn't paying enough attention.

        It's the hypocrisy stupid.

        • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:31:52 PM

Actually, it is the stupidity, hypocrite.

You liberals are all for a woman's 'choice' and privacy - yet you cannot allow privacy in this matter?

How is a parent derelict who is against birth control? Why should Palin give Bristol birth control? How do you know Palin knew the girl was having sex? Ever hide something from your parents as a teen?

Palin demonstrates her morals and views in her actions.

Stupidity? Perhaps looking in the mirror would help.

          • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:54:05 PM

"Why should Palin give Bristol birth control?"

Because it can prevent conception. Duh? Obviously, you need some sex education yourself.

  • Posted By: Chicago_08 @ 09/03/2008 3:16:30 PM

    • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:23:37 PM

How is her family NOT successful? Their baby with Down's? Ridiculous. Bristol? I doubt Palin chained her ankle to her daughter's.

Bristol's pregnancy is NOT Palin's failure.

      • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:34:27 PM

        • Posted By: kas_wolf @ 09/03/2008 3:36:10 PM

Who said this? I guess this is another flawed liberal conclusion.

          • Posted By: Johnsonium @ 09/03/2008 3:51:57 PM

Brisol is a minor. Every bad thing she does does represent a failure by her parents. After she's 18, then she's responsible for herself. A pregnant underage teen is a failure of parenting on one level or another, with rape being the exception.

  • Posted By: Redrose40 @ 09/03/2008 2:52:28 PM

I am tired of this double standard garbage too. You make the children so raise them. Husband or wife. Most of you whiny working women who cry double standard live in huge houses, drive expensive cars and have paid help. Now before you all jump on me. I am college educated. I own my own company. I had a child 7 years ago and struggled financially until he went to kindergarten full time. I gave up the stuff and raised him on my husbands salary alone. It was hard but we did it. I work during his school hours and he will always be the bbetter for it. Sarh Palin and her husband can not have it all. None of you power hungry couples can and the unsupervised children pay forever

So what about the single parents out there who don't have help and look to advance themselves career wise? Are you going to tell them that they can't have it all and sacrifice careers and goals? There is more to life than your side of the story... it is admirable that you invested in your child's life and your husband and you decided to raise them together... Now why are you concern about Sarah Palin ? She and her husband have agreed to raise the children the way that they choose. .... if the father is there supporting his wife then why are you complaining?

So your analogy is telling all couples not to strive for bettering their childrens life and stand up for issues that could very well effect their future.... Sarah Palin has 5 children and you have stated only having 1 child but you manage to go to college and get a degree and run and own your own company.... quit being a hypocrite!.......

Has anyone stopped to think that Trig might get some of the best medical available in the US at Bethesda Naval Medical Center, you know the same place where they take the POTUS. Does anyone consider the educational opportunities the children will have to see parts of the world they only read about in text books now? Does anyone consider that maybe Trace who has volunteered to serve his country in the military (I wonder where he got that idea from?) might feel happier knowing his mother is in the White house and helping to make decisions on this war? Would any mother want to saddle her daughter with the knowledge that her choice to get pregnant cost your mother the opportunity of a life time.

    • Posted By: Mom of disabled @ 09/03/2008 3:44:59 PM

The best medical care is great, but his parents need to be involved. Again, this is from professional and personal experience, the child needs both parents. She will not be able to ignore his needs or demands. You cannot get a cab and send the kid into the doctor's with Secret Service while Dad attends school conferences. This is not the same as a single mother working or any mother working. She is in an exceptional situation, make no mistake about it. There is a high divorce rate in families with these challenges without the demands of a job that is 24/7. Comparing it to your situation is not reasonable unless you have a child with Down's Syndrome and a job as demanding as what she may have in January.

I think this is the most intelligent response I've read on this issue thus far. Thank you for phrasing it so well.

Whether you like Palin or not-it's a double standard. Too much of one especially in 2008. Sadly sexism is alive and well even in this day and age. Obama has young children at home- it's fine to leave his children in total care of their mother- so what about Palin's husband- didnt he take a loeave of absence from his job. These are his children too- is he like most men that won't step up and do their fair share?

Now tihs passport thing- apparently only 27% of Americans have a passpoprt- I don't and I don't see why she is now being penalized for that. It's just any little thing and it's clear that a man would not be treated in this manner. Obama has a passport but my husband has traveled overseas more than Obama has.

Yes, i'd agree, if she were a knowledgable and capable candidate, then having 8 kids wouldn't be an issue. It's not as if there arent proffesionals with the stated job of minding VP and Presidential children. The issues is, McCain and Palin don't want to talk about the issues until Palin has a crash tutoring course to sound knowledgeable; so they keep this sideshow alive and stong, until shes ready to front policy knowledge. The problem is, it's just a front, she hasn't been paying attention. Say what you want about Obama, at least he's been studying up on, and paying attention to, the issues of this campaign. Palin, no such luck.

The liberals are the joke here and they don't even get it. Funny.
Here is a woman who runs a state - a big state albeit smaller in population than others - but a state nonetheless. She has a set of morals that she teaches her children. One of her kids goes in the opposite direction for a bit and gets 'caught out'.

What does Palin do? Supports the girl's decision to have the baby. Easy choice? No - but the right one given Palin's morals.

The big joke is that Obama would view this as his daughter being "punished with a baby (his own words, remember) and opt to abort the child. Easier way out - right?

The difference between the 2 tickets is this:
Obama favors abortion as the way to handle a "problem". Palin (and McCain) favor life.

    Clear choice in my book.

Face it, the Republicans laid a big egg with Palin and are now spinning faster than ever to try and make it seem like a good pick. It's fun to watch. I like to see the Republicans sputter.

The problem here is that if the press pounds Palin too hard, the Republicans will pull her. I'd rather see them stick with her, which would guarantee that they go down in flames in November.

Laugh now - either way conservatives win.

McCain elected - America will win.

Obama elected, the conservatives and proven correct - and the Democrats lose all hope of a chance at the White House for decades to come...

You better pray to your God that the latter comes true because Obama is going to win.

I wish we were only talking about Sarah Palin's professional life, but she has defined her persona as much from her family life and personal beliefs as from her professional life and policy positions. She continues to do so. Having announced her daughter's pregnancy to the world, she is now bringing the teenage father-to-be to the convention! Her life is like Desperate Housewives meet the Dukes of Hazard, and she trots it all out for the world to embrace.

Let's ask one serious question: President Bush just sent Dick Cheney to the Caucasus following the Russian conflict in Georgia. Is Sarah Palin ready to go? McCain could have chosen many other Republicans who would be ready, including a number of women.

Lets see she has been traveling on her own since she became major.... she has been to Iraq, been to Germany to visit wounded service members and has been to Washington for Governors meetings.... so I think that she can handle going over to Georgia and other places deemed necessary....

Your post is just another weak attempt in discrediting a woman.... especially when you don't even have a clue on what she has done......

She didn't even have a passport until 2007. 'Nuff said.
