I think the article is very logical. For Mr/Ms Iconoblaster, Kashmir became a part of India when the Pakistani rangers invaded Kashmir in 1948 and the King at that time had to come to India for protection. I agree that the people at that time wanted Kashmir to remain independent but with Pakistan and China as neighbors it would've mean a monumental defense task for India to keep its sovereignty intact had Raja Hari Singh not come to India for help. As it stands, India, never having instigated a war India against any nation still spends about $40billion a year because of the misfortune of having China and Pakistan as neighbors. Most Kashmiri's who want to align with Pakistan do not realize that their life and freedom will cease to exist under the Pakistani Government.

Has newsweek lost it's mind? They get a Hindu living in Baharat - a Hindu who is a policy expert on INDIA's SECURITY to write an article about secession? How biased can you get than that? Whoever hired this blundering idiot from culcutta needs to get his head examined. Its like getting a Nazi sympathizer to write an article about the holocaust.

"Let them suffer for the greater good of World Peace" is that your bottom line Mr Ganguly? You have earlier in the 90s argued that if India lets kashmir go then it would cause problems for Pakistan etc etc.
Perhaps you should read what Arundhati Roy and others with a more realistic outlook on the issue have to say- so you may sound less like the Serbs who argued Kosovo is better left under their suzerainty of Serb Republic.
Perhaps time has come for all Indians to realize that Nehru made a grave error in judgement when he decided to jump into the civil strife in Kashmir in 1947 against the Maharaja. Indian troops and money have not succeeded in the last 61 years to pacify Kashmir. It could easily have been a problem between China and Pakistan with India being a good neighbor perhaps as it is to Afghanistan.
As things get worse, India invites intervention from far afield in the form of UN,NATO and others as well intentioned, third parties taking advantage of a staging area next to China,Tibet, Pakistan and India..
Today, India needs Azadi from Kashmir more than Kashmir from India.

Fact: Kashmir was promised by Indian gov't. a plebiscite to determine its own future. India never followed through with this promise. It is interesting to note the authors of the article conveniently do not mention this fact.

it appears the Kashmir folks want to keep the lands among their community. and this is enforced by the constitution. how about we do this for every other state in the country. live in your own well. and fester.

I think this story is very balanced. And for your information Mr peace in kashmir, hindus are not fascists. They are very very tolerant-too tolerant some might say if you studied your world history and could see that Indias problems with muslims being there at all is because of the tolerance of Indias hindus.
