too bad this opportunity for tv exposure wasn't in existence when gw bush was nineteen - it may have saved many folks much pain and heartache. then again, maybe not..... any opprotunity to tach a fat, happy and stupid rich american kid anything about the other 98% of the world's population needs to be encouraged. MTV you have given me a tad of faith, the most from you since 1984 when you played dire strait's "money for nothing" video.

These girls are only doing what they ahve been taught. Their parents have allowed them to evolve into empty matieralistic shells. Instead of being their parents they were ATMs and let the things they buy raise thier children. Instead of sending them to some other country they should just let fend for themslves. Give them an empty apartment and tell them they have to find a job and pay for everythin; food rent, electricity, gas, transportation, and show them what real life is like

My relatives from Europe have the same shock when they visit us in the US. they cant believe the level of poverty and how run down thing are here in the US.

Mine also can't believe how big and sprawling our shopping centers are, and see why Americans are so fat and buy too much junk. My cousin from Italy was overwhelmed by an outlet shopping center. -she couldn't get over it, and the low quality of the clothes.

No kidding, MTV! There's REALLY no need to fly your crew all the way to Africa to "educate" these over-privileged teens about "appreciating what they have" or... how some societies end up with economic despairities or... whatever...

Trickle on down some of these budding socialites to my alternative high school classroom right here in the middle of a small town in central Minnesota (we're supposed to have the best education system in the country). I'd be happy to demonstrate how we try to teach classes in a withering pull barn and have ZERO dollars to buy enough textbooks.

Or maybe a homeless shelter in NYC or a high school in a gang infested area of Detroit? Perhaps an experience like this could not only "humble" our embarassing gossip girls (as we beam their reactions around the world via satellite) Maybe they could even go back home and convince their daddy warbucks to re-think some of his economic optimism. Maybe they would even donate 25% of the trust fund to something useful like their local food shelf, the American Red Cross or an organization that supports our homeless veterans or war orphans right here in our own beloved country.

ps: The majority of people who use local food shelves: A) have jobs B) are raising children or C) report it to be "embarrassing to ask for help"

ANSWER: "D" all of the above

This is where the problem is. AMERICA DOESN'T WANT TO ADMIT that in OUR VERY COUNTRY are conditions that exist that are WORSE than in "Africa" or "Thiland" - places that we hear about and think "oh, poor things!" because they don't have Prada. I think they are more enlightened in Africa or Thiland.

I think these girls (who are also always chunky, why are you rich girls so fat? If I have to look at another one of you sqeezed into a Juicy sweat pants outfit I will puke) should instead be sent to rural West Virginia, or Mississippi, or countless other places where poverty is a way of life and kids have to get up to farm, or miss school to take care of sick siblings. It's tougher here in America where you are told to buy buy buy and that you can't possibly LIVE without a $50 face cream, and girls like these young brats are the root of it. "I will still buy Gucci and Prada because I love bags and shoes". This is the future of America - it's sad that they are so stupid.

The idea of this show is to educate these :sheltered" rich kids about the rest of the world. MTV is taking these kids to "third-world countries" to show them about a different culture. And MTV is taking them to an area of that country where the people still work hard while living off the land. I think this is a good idea, as Americans, in general, are ignorant of anything or anybody outside of our borders. Most Americans have no idea about geography, foreign culture and sociology, foreign politics or economics or foreign governments. I thinks this show atleast addressed the ignorance of Americans when it comes to foreign countries

yes they could have sent her to some place in america, but she would have a car and phones so she could talk to her friends. so i don't like the way they portraid africa but sometimes that is what is needed to show the stupid brats that they have a good life and america wouldn't be able to show them that.

Aaargh! Why MTV? I mean I live in South Africa and really, I am offended that developing countries are used as a backdrop to teach spoiled privelidged kids a lesson. lie some of the other posters said Why don't they send them to participate in some sort of grass roots community service in the US, I visited my aunt in New Jersey last year and there were quite a few homeless people around. Show that MTV!!! Thanks for continueing the stereotypes about developing nations MTV.

The premise is silly and ill-informed. You don't need to go to Kenya for a Third World experience. The Third World does not exist, it is an out-dated and ill-informed stereotype. Why waste the money (am I sure MTV had to fly them there at least Business Class to have them sign up for this), you can get a perfectly good Third World experience in Detroit, Chicago or LA. And then take them for a positively modern experience in Kenya, Mozambique, Cambodia or perhaps ultra-modern India or China? I am sure the hard working people of what you call the "third world'' have better things to do than entertain these development tourist brats.

The premise is good, but I agree, there was no need to send these kids abroad. So many here in the states struggle to put food on the table and pay the bills, and take care of their families. Making these kids work for the money they spend on designer clothes and cars for once in their lives would be better than sending them overseas. I bet they don't even know what a real job is!

why send them to Africa? There are places in America where these kids will see that life is not a bed of roses.
