What I found so interesting last night is that the Eskimo claimed that Obama is going to raise taxes on middle class families. When are the GOP and their pandering band of morons going to start telling the truth.

Under Obama's plan, the TPC estimates that people (or couples) making between $37,595 and $66,354 a year would see an average savings of $1,118 on their taxes.

Under McCain's plan, on the other hand, those same individuals would save $325 on average ??? $793 less than the average savings under Obama's plan.

Also they call Democrats Tax and Spend. Apparently they haven't been living on earth for the past eight years as it was their party that ran up record deficits and increased the national debt from 4 trillion to almost 10. That is what happens when you have a complete Republican Government. McCain's latest ads claims that Democrats and Barack Obama will create even higher deficits.

That couldn't be further than the truth.

The ad also claims that Obama and congressional Democrats would bring about "years of deficits." But (and we've reported this before, too), the fact is both candidates' economic plans would fail to bring an end to deficit spending, and by that measure, McCain's is worse than Obama's. According to the TPC analysis, Obama's tax plan would increase the debt by $3.5 trillion by 2018, while McCain's plan would bring about a projected $5 trillion increase in the same time frame.

This is how we debate issues Republicans.

This column is laughable. Alter is no journalist. His bias is transparent and his attacks will be discounted by all but the dyed in the wool liberals. Most independents can see right through this and will reject this commentary and move the otherway. Keep up the good work Jonathan Alter! The populace will reject this and vote in the McCain Palin ticket !!!!

WHAT ABOUT THE ISSUE????/ SHE IS NOT READY AT ALL!!! MCCAIN IS STILL CONFUSED!! CAN WE GET TO THE ISSUES? SHE (PALIN) NEED TO VETTED BY THE PRESS TOO. WE DONT KNOW HER!!

I agree Tonn. If they can drill Obama and Hillary they sure as hell can drill this woman. It's amazing how the GOP claims the media is liberal, when the media gives them passes on everything!!!

Well, after seeing both conventions and being an independent, it is obvious that the Republican Party is willing to do and say anything to win this election. Politicians will do and say just about anything but John McCain and his VP Pick (Palin) have gone beyond anything I've ever heard.
With all the respect John McCain Deserves for serving our country and suffering for our cause, HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO KEEP HEARING ABOUT HIS TIME SPENT IN A POW CAMP? I think the entire world KNOWS. My wife's grand father fought in WWII in the pacific. He was a squad leader. He served his country, fought for our freedoms, fought in the philipines and I am sure endured and saw the worse a human bein has to offer and suffer. He died in his 80's with fragments of a bullet still in his hip!!! I only heard this ONCE! He didn't feel the need to keep talking about it to make or have people like him.
My question about his honorable service and sacrifice is this: Where is the conection and relevance of his 5 years in a POW camp and our say his ability to resolve our current housing crisis? Or our Job crisis? or our energy independace goal? Health care of lack of it? Where was his JUDGEMENT when deciding and approving to Invade Iraq INSTEAD of giving all America had to Hunt and capture Osama Bin Laden when we had him cornered?
About Palin, I really have nothing to say except that she is very new to this, looked nervous and it showed.
I think that women should be offended by McCain's move on picking her. Just because she is a woman and a hard working mom, doesn't mean that all the women in this country will switch and vote for her since Hillary lost her battle. Her ideas are completely different that Hillary's. They don't compare at all! The republican party should be informed that Women are just as smart as men. That naive thinking that just because Palin is a woman, the will get all the Hillary votes is what got us into trouble in Iraq! They thought the Iraquis ( the oldest civilization in the world ) would want to be occupied indefinitely by the Americans telling them how to live and be happy about it.
On closing, the Republican party this time around seems to only represent the white elite citizens of America. Look at that convention and you will see who is being represented. There are virtually no minorities. America is diverse and the Republicans don't seem to be interested in diversity as well to do whites seem to be their focus of attention.

Why are we surprised about McCain's pick, don't we have Bush as our president, whose records have always come-up missing. They figure we are gullible. First it was the scare tactics, now its the media, and obviously they do not have any solution to the mess Bush and the conservatives have got into. Thats why Palin spent so much time not talking about any real solution. Of course, we have a first hand look at how she has successfully run her ideal home. Now, ask yourself if the republican party fully represents today's America, looking at the people at the convention, just reminds us of the 18th and 19th century America....they are all white people. Guess how much minority was at the convention? 36! Now, if these conventions, the DNC and RNC, where an exact representation of who the parties planned on focusing their attention and help on while in power....then the minorities will once again be left out if the republicans get office. The republicans have this evolution like mentality...only the strongest will survive ( ie.. the wealthy and powerful) and we are going to make sure they do according to our policies we have set forth with the Bush admin and now Mc Cain's if they stay in power. We need a president who is going to insure that the no child left behind policy is an mentality that is resonated in every aspect of American living...to no American left behind. Voting for the republicans this term will ensure the country on its downward spiral...I wouldn't be surprised if another term of this mess would bring a modern day civil war. Now a days..nothing surprises me anymore.

McCain and the republicans need to tell us how they would cater to the necessities of all AMERICANS, regardless of race, religion, culture, sexual orientation and otherwise. And when GOD blesses America, its not just the conservative whites and their families.

We need preson in the WHITE HOUSE that cares for all the people and John McCain is not the person to do it.

  • Posted By: NamelessGenXer @ 09/04/2008 11:37:01 AM

Executive Experience = building from nothing the leanest, meanest, most disciplined political machine ever seen, that took on the big bad Clintons and the Democratic Establishment, beat them and their own game, and is now poised to relegate the rotting carcass that is the GOP to the last century where it belongs along, with good old boy ownership of elected officials and coat-hanger abortions.

Extra Added Bonus: The Obama Machine has done this without resorting to the despicable, gutter-sniping, scorched-earth, vicious personal attack strategy that is the only weapon left in the arsenal of the weakest, most pathetic, lying, cheating, pandering, presidential candidate in U.S. History in the person of John McCain (make the the only weapon besides the P.O.W. Card and, now, the Down Syndrome Baby Card.)

Please all of you who support Sarah Palin, name one progressive thing she has done nationally. She has ZERO foreign policy experience. Barack Obama sits on the Foreign Relations Committee and we already see how he is received by the world leaders.

Being the CIC of the Alaska national guard doesn't count. And if you guys wanna talk executive experience, we can make the case about all governors. Don't forget Bush had executive experience as governor of Texas and look where that got us. You expect a man who has been part of broken politics for over 30 years and Eskimo to do a better job than a legislator with nearly 12 years of experience, and a sitting US senator with over 30 years of Foreign Policy experience.

Barack's team will consist of Clinton advisors and we all know how good our economy was under clinton. McCain's advisors consists of lobbyists and big oil who are also part of Bush's political team. Who do you expect to do the better job?

I watched along with my family the Palin speech last night. Frankly we were miffed. All she managed to do was talk about John McCain's POW experience and 9/11. As if being a POW makes you a war hero. From what I understand and have researched of prisoners of war since wars started, they (political prisoners) are taken by force, they do not volunteer to be tortured for their country. That argument alone is such unrealistic crap but it is obviously such that we as Americans have come to accept in order to justify a war or get pity from the "middle America" crowds that prove to be the most gullible people in this country. Why gullible, they do not research facts and history for themselves. They listen to other preaching and then they just shake their head in agreement.

Everyone made attacks and attacks on Obama - OK that's what candidates do against each other but when does the attack stop and the real issues begin. What are John McCain and Palin's strategies about the economic nightmare that we're living in right now. How do they propose to get it moving again. What are they prepared to do about the energy crisis that is crippling the working class of this country. She talked about bringing this country out of its misery but isn't it a situation that her president created in his eight years of nightmarish decision making and not one of those so called network anchors brought that up. Play the entire video again and you will see that she attacked George Bush's policies left and right, and everyone just stared. Truth is they were probably confused. Furthermore it's insulting for the Media to suggest that women in this country are so stupid and gullible that they would vote for the McCain/Palin ticket simply because he nominated a woman.

Another thing is this country today is more diverse than ever before. Why doesn't this convention show a fair representation of that fact. Where are the other people of this nation? I cannot believe my ears when the so-called respected anchors in the Media whether it be MSNBC, CNN and of course FOX called her speech a great speech. If that is what a great speech is then we are doing a great dis-service to our children who are learning ELA in their first year of Middle School because to call that a great speech is to make a mockery out of all the great speech writers of the world.

This rally at the Convention looked more like a PTA Meeting at a Middle School and the only thing you come out knowing about this woman is that she's married with kids, she was a soccer mom and she compares herself with pitbulls.

America, please! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE ESPRESSO!

The sad reality is if this party is elected, we will face the biggest nightmare that one can ever imagine by way of security of this land, economic disaster and an energy crisis never before seen in the entire world. Pardon the cliche but you can take that to the bank.

So, running a presidential campaign should, in itself, be enough to truly qualify one fof the presidency, is that it? That seems to be the gist of your argument in claiming that McCain has a problem because of Palin's "inexperience" but that Obama doesn't have an inexperience problem despite the fact that Palin has considerably more actual executive experience at running governmental entities than he does. Somehow, I doubt most undecided voters will be able to make that leap.

Jonathan, you've written some idiotic stuff before, but this takes the cake. Do they actually pay you for this crap?

We already know that Gov Palin has not become good friends with the Ayers, doesn't atend Wright's church and would have probly gone crazy yelling at him for his racist and demeaning comments about America. Palin didn't need $10 million from Resko. She and her husband may have drank but last I knew that was a legal sub, Also - Obama earmarked like what? 20 million to his church last year- where is that story? As far as her daughter being pregnant - yeh-that it like what? 1/2 the black teenage mothers in America? Why don't we pull Obama's daughters out and see what they think of the USA after being in Wright's church all their lives? Has Palin's husband ever said America is a mean country? Yes I think Gov Palin has more experience than Obama anyday. How do you really know what she knows about foriegn policy? She is next to Germany last I checked a map. Think about how stupid the Media looks. It is foolish to think that they can pull another attack on a female and have people fall for that again. Obama can sit back a laugh but it comes down to this - he said "sweety" first to that reporter a few months ago. With the Obama people and media trying to tear Gov Palin down will bring more votes to McCain. That is simple truth. So keep up the good work Dems and media.

Sure you forgot her pastor her biggot and sexist. Or how about the lobbyist she spent to bring home the pork. You people never cease to amaze me. Sarah Palin's job in Alaska is not that great. Palin's value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women's wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves "abstinence-only" programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers' millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn't spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.

Comment: "like what? 1/2 the black teenage mothers in America? "

Duh! That made no sense 100% of the black teeanage mothers in America were pregnant!

There are a couple problems with saying that Palin isn't experienced enough to be VP - One of them is Teddy Roosevelt, who was Governor of NY before being picked for VP, and the other is Woodrow Wilson, who served as Gov. of NJ two years before winning the Presidency.
I find it difficult to believe that Jonathan Alter doesn't get the executive experience thing. Americans get it; this will be only the third time that this nation has elected a sitting Senator to the White House.

    • Posted By: Divina @ 09/04/2008 11:27:48 AM

Susan, don't ya think...the world has changed a little since the late 1800s/early 1900s? Be well.

      Teddy Roosevelt -
      US Civil Service Commision 1889-1895
President of Board of NYC Police Commisioners 1895-1897
Assistant Secretary of the Navy 1897-1898 (widely credited with preparing the US Navy for the Spanish American war)
Founded the first volunteer cavalry regiment (also known as the Rough Riders) and awarded the Medal of Honor.
      Governor of NY 1898-1900

      Woodrow Wilson -
      Began practicing law in 1882 - 1883
Completed PHD in Political Science in 1886 (Only US President to have earned a doctoral degree)
Professor at a number of Colleges and Universities including Princeton
      President of Princeton 1902-1910
Governor of New Jersey 1910-1912 (Established state primaries, removing party bosses from power)

      Sarah Palin -
      Wasilla, Alaska City Council 1992-1996
      Wasilla, Alaska Mayor 1996-2002
Chair of Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Comission 2003-2004
Governor of Alaska 2007-2008? (After accepting the money for the bridge to nowhere, she canceled the project for a bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island but kept the Federal money, thus making it a bridge to nowhere.)

Wasilla has a population of about 5000 people. Really? You want to compare her experience to theirs?

    • Posted By: ARAD10K @ 09/04/2008 4:30:03 AM

Anyone who equates being governor of Alaska with the same office in either New York or New Jersey has about as much grasp of the issues as Sarah Palin has. Really.

  • Posted By: mrg1164 @ 09/04/2008 11:26:21 AM

Jonathan Alter epitomizes the like-minded view of the journalistic elite. He truly believes that they are smarter, better educated and more mentally capable of deciphering the political issues of the day than those of small town, middle-America. This growing disrespect from journalists toward those that are less than cosmopolitan and do not share in the predominate liberal culture among major media outlets has provided licensing for someone such as Sarah Palin to emerge and take on their establishment with such political fanfare. Ironically, the very same media machine which in large part has served in elevating the senator from Illinois, will also be responsible for the destructive force that will likely take him down.

    Palin???s top ten:
    1. No abortion - even in cases of rape and incest

    6. Support the NRA, or you???ll be fired
    7. Leave your beloved hometown in a deficit
    8. Be schooled on politics by Bush???s administration...but...
