the missing piece in the argument is that the American people followed their election process and selected as the democratic nominee, Barack Obama. He won the most delegates. That's how the process works. Eighteen million Americans had the chance to review and vet their candidate and that is who they selected. The outcome of that process says the American people (mostly Democrats and some others) have decided the level of experience is sufficient. Let the American people do their own determination about McCain Palin. In case we have all forgotten, it is up to the people to decide. The electorate already made their decision about Obama. He's in. Palin has been appointed and it is now our turn to do our own personal vetting process for her. Obama stood up to the test during that arduous primary and he came through in a fashion that led to the American people putting him on the national ballot.

Very well said. I think the problem with this country is not Democrat or Republican. I really believe it is dorks like the yahoo who wrote this article trying to tell us how to think. The media stirred this into a frenzy all this week. When did the media become a branch of the government ? They are mad because they were left out of the vetting process so it is now their opinion it wasn't done correctly. Bunch of BS if you ask me.

I was not impressed with Palin's speech tonight at all. It was too rehearsed, too choregraphed and felt so impersonal. At times you could even tell when she forgot the next part because she would pause and then cut those made-up eyes over to the moniter. I guess that is what's expected from someone who just a week ago had no idea what was going on outside of her little "world" of Alaska. The media has stated that Palin was taken out of the public eye for several days to prepare for her speech and I'm pretty sure that consisted of watching tapes of the DNC the week before to know exactly what parts of Obama's AMAZING speech to tear apart. Face it! This woman is ill prepared and double-minded. And furthermore I wish everyone would stop hailing this woman as a HEROINE because she would not abort her little Twiggy born with down syndrome. *violin strings cued*. Boo Hoo. She is pro-life!! That is expected of her! Pro-life means baby has no legs, missing a lung, a kidney, has one eyeball ITS GONNA LIVE!! That's like praising a cop for writing a ticket to someone who is speeding. Its his freakin job! *Yawn* please come up with something better. John McCain looks like a walking corpse who can barely lift his hands above his hands to wave. Sure, put this "maverick" in the white house if you want to and our country will be on its way to hell in a pretty little handbasket with a big red bow!!

i agree. it was a string of one liners devoid of all substance. it sounds like a newscaster making a speech

  • Posted By: mydiadem @ 09/04/2008 9:54:15 AM

Where does she stand on issues? The economy? Foreign policy? Alternative energy away from oil dependence? Did she go to college? What are her qualifications? All I heard in her speech last night was attacks on the opponents, including barbs at community organizing which I found personally offensive. As someone still undecided I want solutions, ideas, and change - not just interesting character stories whether it be Obama or Palin.

    • Posted By: Eng_Nic @ 09/04/2008 10:23:29 AM

i made a spreadsheet of many issues for all four candidates
she is AGAINST abortion(even rape & incest), FOR drilling in Alaska (even in national parks), FOR the death penalty, FOR teacher lead prayer in schools, FOR the right of all to bear arms (with gun saftey), Strongly AGAINST gay marrage and wants to refuse health care to gay couples, FOR abstinance only sex ed, AGAINST stem cell research, AGAINST public health care, AGAINST finding alternate sources of energy, and so far has NO OPINION on immigration. you can find more at this web site and on other candidates http://www.ontheissues.org/Sarah_Palin.htm

  • Posted By: mydiadem @ 09/04/2008 10:22:31 AM

If the federal government isn't here to be my 'babysitter' as Dumplin so wrote, than why are we spending so much of my tax dollars on a war on terror? Let the terrorists come, screw national defense whether it be abroad or at home, and give me back my money (I know this might seem extreme, but hear me out). My taxes haven't decreased lately, and if either the Republicans spend us silly into mountains of debt (a weaking dollar and economy in the process) on war because they won't raise taxes or the Democrats do it without tons of debt and raising my taxes and spend it on things like social programs what does it matter? The economy is still screwed up because THEY JUST KEEP SPENDING! Stop the spending on the war and social programs in Iraq, on needlessly social programs here, and put it to only good use like on alternative energy policy so we can control our own destiny in the next 50 years.

Palin has more executive experience than Biden and Obama combined. Alter's and the mainstream media bias is readilly apparant and blatantly elitest and sexist.

    • Posted By: Dduellman @ 09/04/2008 10:22:00 AM

With your criteria for experience, she is also more qualified then McCain. Such hypocrisy. There are none so blind as those who would not see.

    • Posted By: paul962 @ 09/03/2008 11:48:12 PM

Heck, the president of my local PTA has more executive experience. You gonna vote for her?

  • Posted By: Lora1234 @ 09/04/2008 10:20:26 AM

This writer is clearly biased and it is a shame that Newsweek gave him a platform to aire his garbage. I am ashamed for Newsweek. They should change their name to Opinion Week. But you know what they say about opinions....everyone has one. I was impressed with Palin and know enough about Obama's tax and spend politics to know that McCain has my and my family's vote. Hard working American's need to wake up.

Can a woman who abuses her public office position due to family issues, to fire others who are working very very hard in the interest of the country, really be a VP or even the president ? Just guess to what extent she can abuse her position to the detriment of others and the nation as a whole if she should become the VP. America should simply say no to this woman. She doesn't care enough about the country.
lest I forget..........! It is really amazing to listen to the republicans lie again and again. For what reason do they tell such great lies. Only to win an election? How hard should it be for a normal human being to look into the cameras and peoples faces and tell very obvious lies? And these are the people who want to rule this great nation. Is the united states of America built on lies? Do Americans want to pick up liars to rule this great nation? Isn't it quite shocking to see people jubilating while being told lies? Are these people so short sighted and only caring about their short term interests that they neglect the future of their children?
OBAMA has the common sense, wisdom and experience to rule and lead the country into a brighter future.
God bless America, and open the eyes of Americans to see his plans for a good, prosperous, stable and peaceful future through an OBAMA administration. And may God also have mercy on the liars and forgive them, after all they are also Americans - but only without a vision

No matter how biased you are you can not shrink Alaska as in your remark "she has served only 20 months as governor of a state half the size of Brooklyn" I think Alaska is larger than Brooklyn by quite a bit, but good try.

    • Posted By: Texas1980 @ 09/04/2008 10:14:01 AM

You never been to brooklyn huh??? NYC area has over 8 million people alone. How many you think are in Brooklyn.

  • Posted By: drmarkevans @ 09/04/2008 9:35:38 AM

Wow- you are so misguided.... and just plain ignorant in your view of the american personna. Did you see her speech, hear her story?? Do you think Obama is 'more qualified' to assume the most powerful position in the free world--- because he impressed the liberal media establishment? Palin is not running for president-- she running for the number two spot.... and she may do just fine. Have you met Joe Biden? I have--- maybe a nice guy, but lets be honest-- he's just not that bright. Jonathan- there's a change in america, where now our news and our impressions of people are available in multiple media outlets. Those who hope to succedd need to be fair, honest and impartial--- do you think you are???

    • Posted By: jnakhoul @ 09/04/2008 9:41:14 AM

what kind of rock do you smoke? do you honestly believe that the media is owned by liberals. Each and every news outlet is owned by republicans. This idea of the liberal media is a ploy to push conservative agendas and only a fool can't see through that. Do alittle research and you'll find where the money comes from *special hint* they were at the convention last night wink wink

      • Posted By: Mikestheman1984 @ 09/04/2008 10:12:48 AM

Please lib put down the crack pipe you like to pay people on welfare to smoke all day. Call Dan rather he will understand you.

      • Posted By: hornetfan @ 09/04/2008 9:56:56 AM

And I'm sure that when all of the major players in the main stream media accompanied Obama to Europe, while leaving the Republican Campaign to fend for itself, that it was in the spirit of "fair and unbiased reporting", right? (wink wink right back at you)

  • Posted By: krogstak @ 09/04/2008 8:41:46 AM

The criticisms of this article don't address any of the points made by Alter. The point very simply is that Palin doesn't have much more experience than many of the hockey moms she used to hang out with. That's not a criticism of these mothers, it's just pointing out what should be apparent from her resume. Whatever you think of Obama he does have a longer history of interest and involvement in national issues. He also has been widely available to the media for several years. People have some idea of what his political philosophy and principles involve.

    • Posted By: hornetfan @ 09/04/2008 9:12:59 AM

yes - he's been accessible to the media, but where are the tough questions? The questions that require him to make a stand on issues and remain on that stand, regardless of where he is and what day of the week it is. Oh, I forgot - the media has been too busy being Obama groupies rather than doing the job it was intended to do, in an unbiased manner . . .

      • Posted By: Mother of two @ 09/04/2008 10:12:33 AM

Is this the only responce you or anyone who slams the media can come back with?? It's just the media's fault. They are not asking the tough questions. And no one is off the hook here, both sides do it. If there is a "tough question" that has not been asked, then do it yourself. Write to the networks that will be covering the debates, write to your new papers, write to the campaigns themselvesselves. But that argument is so old, and far from accurate. If your need for information and 'tough questions' is so unsatisfied, than do something about it!!

What are you guys talking about? Obama has plenty of accomplishments that far outweigh hers. He is a graduate of Columbia and Harvard with 10 years at the the University of Chicago as a law professor. He was the first black president of Harvard Law Review. Some of his students liked him so much that they are campaining for him. He has 10 years of combined senate experience. In the state senate he sponsored 780 bills of which 280 were signed into law. During his first year in the senate he sponsered 152 bills and cosponsored 427 or more. He worked with Sen. Lugar to expand and author a program to dismantle stray Russian WMD's left over from the cold war. He has other substantial accomplishments that are not mentioned here. He also ran a powerhouse of a campaign against Clinton and won. He speaks eliquently about foreign affairs, the economy and any other subject. While other candidates were proposing a "gas tax holiday" for the purpose of getting votes, he was rightly against it because he tried it in Illinois and it didn't work. He was against the war in Iraq. If we were not in Iraq, we could respond to Russia's aggression directly toward the west. Al-Queda is regrouping in Afganistan, and the Republicans want to Occupy Iraq, taking resources away from Afganistan? The Iraqis are making music videos of our troops being blown up by IEDs and playing them at weddings. Why should we pour money into their country while we suffer? These things highlight not only his experience, but his judgement. It is a total misconception that he has done nothing and is not accomplished and is not ready to lead.

ELECTING MCCAIN AND PALIN PROVES HOW SMART THE AMERICAN PUBLIC REALLY IS. SHE HAS HER HEAD IN THE RIGHT PLACE ON ISSUES OF WHAT IS THE PROPER ROLE OF GOVERNMENT. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT THERE AS YOUR BABYSITTER TO MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU FALL YOU DON'T GET HURT. EXPERIENCE IS HOW WE LEARN WISDOM AND HOW TO DEAL WITH LIFE AND ITS CHALLENGES. GOVERNMENT IS THERE TO MAKE SURE WE ARE NOT IMPEDED BY GOVERNMENT SO THAT WE CAN SUCCEED. CIVICS 101, LEARN PEOPLE, THOSE OF YOU WHO EXPECT GOVERNMENT TO TAKE CARE OF YOU ALL YOUR LIFE, YOU ARE THE WHINERS.

  • Posted By: angelblue3 @ 09/04/2008 10:05:45 AM

What is happening to Americans' common sense? One speech on one night that she did not write, makes her a wonderful choice as a candidate. I hope that the press continues to question what is really going on here. Perhaps they are under the impression that it really doesn 't matter. The republicans seem to have made a habit of stealing elections, They talk a good game, but they are lousy leaders.

  • Posted By: srob1011 @ 09/04/2008 10:05:07 AM

"It will be up to the press and public to raise enough of a stink about this, that Palin is forced to submit to real interviews with real questions that show whether her real-life experience is any preparation for assuming high office. In that sense, the Palin nomination is as much of a test of us as it is of her."

Jonathan, so far you folks have failed this test as it relates to Mr. Obama. Providing the fawning over him stops and the "real questions" are directed his way as well, we'll all be better off and let the chips fall where they will

  • Posted By: Phil D @ 09/04/2008 10:04:16 AM

Leaving aside your obvious bias, you still couldn't be more wrong. To the extent the ARGUMENT remains whether Obama or Palin has more relevant experience, Obama loses. Period. He's heading the democratic ticket. The McCain camp will be smart to keep this argument alive for the rest of the campaign. By the way, this was my view before Palin's masterful speech, which only served to help the republican cause.

  • Posted By: Mikestheman1984 @ 09/04/2008 9:09:47 AM

You don't get it you liberal snoot. Getting votes and doing well in interviews does not a president make.
The facts are the facts. In Palin's limited experience, she has more leadership experience than Obama.
The are also the facts. McCain has a life time of experience, sorry you liberals don't like that he is a hero and a 27 year Senator, and while Obama and his wife hated the country that gave them everything McCain was serving his country.
I guess thats why all of the print media is in trouble you peopel are so leftist no one wants to pay to read anything you write anymore.

    • Posted By: jnakhoul @ 09/04/2008 9:46:22 AM

are you kidding what does alaska have to do with the rest of the country or the rest of the world for that matter. I live in a city with a bigger population than the entire state. She is the queen of pork barrel spending that she is said to oppose

      • Posted By: Mikestheman1984 @ 09/04/2008 10:03:54 AM

Sorry that you think you have to live in a city or a big state to be a leader. I guess Arkansas is a great powerhouse state and what town did Jimmy Carter come from by the way? Alaska has energy issues, environmental issues and the economic issues that face all Americans, they have all of the challenges that any state in the country has.

Her family looked quite happy and successful to me last night . I guess you liberals like to make moral judgements about a 17 year old girl who chooses to keep her child. I guess that is a shameful act to you doctor. It seems that her daughter keeping her baby is taking responsibility.

I guess spenting 1/2 of your one term as a senaotr running for presdient is a great accomplishment. Please name one bill Obama has introduced.

    • Posted By: moiramandiga @ 09/04/2008 9:39:10 AM

Comment: I watched Sarah Palin last night and her gutter sniper comments did nothing to sway my opinion of her in a positive way. If she has so much experience, let's hear her to talk about the issues not make assinine personal attacks. The Democrats should take the gloves off and give it back to her just like she dished it. John McCain has no executive experience. Her toughness as a point guard in high school does not qualify her as VP. It's a whole new ballgame these days with global relations. It will be all hands on deck when a new administration comes in. The VP will have to sit down and converse with leaders of the world and earn their respect. What on earth can she talk about? Her educational background is paltry at best. How will she deal with well-educated, culture elite Russian/Georgian leaders and Middle East leaders? Hit them with a hockey stick?
She is a pawn and a shameful one at that. What was really ludicrous last night was watching the Republican stage last that was once the bully pulpit for family values and "morality central" being occupied by a 17 year unwed mother and her baby's daddy and being treated like the Virgin Mary. We castigate inner city minority mothers and their unwed teenage daughters for their promiscuity and lack of parenting. We give this woman a pass. How hypocritical! The most important job she has and she failed period.
Just like a man who is not present in the home and the son gets into trouble and has to bear that responsibility, Sarah Palin should bear this responsibility.
I worked as a physician in underserved communities and it was the community organizers who got people back on their feet with jobs, healthcare, babysitting services, mental health services. They provided coordination with local and state agencies. They were at the ground level delivering services and managing with almost nonexistent budget. It's easy to govern and balance the checkbook when the coffers are filled with oil money. It's a different story when you have to use your intelligence and skills set to do a lot with a little and bring about positive results. Sarah Palin as the British would say couldn't organize a "piss in a brewery".

  • Posted By: chloe659 @ 09/04/2008 9:26:18 AM

I was so empowered by Sarah Palin's speech last night. It is so refreshing to hear someone who wants to work for the American people and not the Washington crowd. You go girl! We've got it in the bag.

    • Posted By: jradmacher @ 09/04/2008 10:01:54 AM

She didn't write the speech and she didn't energize me at all. I have voted as a Repuplican but after the Bush crisis there is no way I am going to vote for McCain. "You go girl", yes girl go away back to Alaska and take care of your children. Having five children one of which has downe syndrome is a big enough job for any one. Unless her husband is going to quit his job to care of their children how is she going to take care of them. What happened to God first, family second and job third?

  • Posted By: Divina @ 09/04/2008 10:01:29 AM

A major consideration that seems to be overlooked re: the Palin choice...while related to experience...is much more relevant in today's multi-cultural, hyper-complex world. And that is: lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge re: histories of "hot spots," lack of knowledge of other peoples and places, lack of knowledge re: past, present, and (potential) future world leaders, lack of knowledge of economics, of technology, of all that interacts with and defines our lives, not only as U.S. citizens, but as global participants.
With all due respect: I would ask you to simply listen to what Gov. Palin has said in these areas (or absence thereof). It's no accident she was kept from appearing on the Sunday morning news programs; no accident she has yet to hold a press conference; even her surrogates have admitted she'll need to undergo an intensive learning process "at the foot" of McCain (quite a visual). And at this very moment, she???s being tutored by numerous Bush policy folk. (Hmm...kinda like cramming for a major exam after you???ve never attended class, no? And what???s this thing about ???change??? when your tutors are Bush-ites?)
Whether she has been an "executive" or not (take a look at the Wasilla City Hall and you'll know why I had to put the word in quotes), I would much prefer two individuals at the helm who know the difference between Shiia and Sunni and who recognize the main purpose of the "surge" (more palatable to say it this way than to tell us hey, we're sending a whole bunch more troops in for an indefinite period of time)...was to settle the overall climate enough to get warring factions working with each other on political solutions amongst themselves (which has yet to happen unless you understand this current lessening of violence has been due, not to the surge per se, but to the money being paid, by the U.S., to new 16 year old Sunni recruits who are being held at arms length by the Shiite Iraqi P.M.)
P.S. I look forward to a time in the near future when our citizens embrace astute intelligence...rather than scorn it.

  • Posted By: neophyte @ 09/04/2008 10:01:20 AM

The happiest people in America last night were the writers for Saturday Night Live. Talk about "not ready for prime time", they could run her speech straight and people would think they were watching comedy. What a tragedy for our country.

  • Posted By: mydiadem @ 09/04/2008 10:00:33 AM

If folks on this board don't know what community organizing like Barack Obama did for years in Chicago is it tells me that they are elitist living in fancy developments with cul-de-sacs and Starbucks lattes. Community organizing is the average American citizens outlet to challenge corrupt or inept politicans and make a difference in your community. Its the antithesis of establishment politics, and if McCain and Palin are a true change from the Washington establishment they would herald community activists around the country as 'mavericks'. Its kind of like being in the PTA, which I think is a very interesting thing on Palin's resume.
