Sounds like the liberals don't quite know how to relate to such a powerful woman, just shows sexism is alive and well especially in the democratic party. So much for change!!!!!She is inspirational, smart and the new feminist. Perhaps a bit jealous that you have not achieved what she has as Governor, 20 years of marriage and 5 children? She has our support and I hope she focuses on the goal and doesn't listen to the constant whining and negativity in the media.

I never realized that Brooklyn was so large. I understood Alaska was the largest state. "Palin's vote totals for mayor were measured in the hundreds; she has served only 20 months as governor of a state half the size of Brooklyn, and knows nothing of national or international issues beyond energy." per Jonathan Alter. Mr. Alter should get his facts in order. As for Sarah Palin, I have a feeling she will be attacked from every direction, because she is a woman. A very outspoken woman, and people have trouble with that. A man can have a Down's Syndrome child, and run for public office, and the fact barely gets mentioned. His daughter can get pregnant at the tender age of 17, and not be criticized, for not staying at home and taking care of his family. But a woman in the same situation will be and is critized. It wouldn't have happened if she'd been home tending to business as she should be.

    • Posted By: harvey74 @ 09/04/2008 1:13:23 PM

And your point is? Obama's not a woman, so why is he attacked from every angle? I'll answer that for you...because he is running in this election. When you step into the ring, you better get ready, man/woman, black/white. She's fair game, and she should have been properly vetted.

      • Posted By: petersot @ 09/04/2008 1:23:10 PM

Eh? What is vetted? The nominee can appoint anyone he/she choses, vetting is just a standardized process of reducing risk. Vetting is not an approval from anyone other than the nominee, and especially not from the media, bloggers, or forum trolls.

If McCain accepts the risk, so be it, she is then vetted.

        Get a life.

        • Posted By: harvey74 @ 09/04/2008 2:20:19 PM

You are absolutely right! And because McCain took the risk, she deserves to be properly scrutinized because he chose not to do so. I'm glad we agree.

Oho! So that is why Nobama has avoided all the real talk shows? He has been hiding behind softball questions from the main-stream-media-in-the-tank-for-nobama

    you all make me laugh

and you are making all of our arguments...ALL of them

'cept for you, it's too late

  • Posted By: Angm @ 09/04/2008 2:19:23 PM

If Sarah Palin does as you anticipate and only does interviews with Sean Hannity, Larry King and the like wouldn't she be following in the same footsteps as Barak Obama who until tonight wouldn't appear on the Bill O'reilly show? And his appearance was only after meeting with Fox to be sure he would be treated fairly.
Sean Hannity has requested an interview with Obama for months and he has yet to appear but you are already critical of Sarah Palin in anticipation of what she will or will not do. After last night's speech I don't think she is afraid of you, Katie Couric, Keith Olberman or any others of you that call yourselves journalists. Edward R. Murrow must be rolling over in his grave after watching all of your performances this year.

  • Posted By: Tiger184 @ 09/04/2008 2:18:44 PM

Oho! and tell me why Nobama has refused to go on anything other than softball main stream-in-the-tank-liberal shows?

    you liberals make me laugh

you are making all of our arguments...ALL of them

but, for you, it is too late

Obama is supported by Hamas and Hizb'allah, and most Americans within 10 miles of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Johm McCain and Sarah Palin will get most votes in between although they may lose in Gaza.
Mr. Alter; you do the math. By the way Joe biden is of NO CONSEQUENSE in this election.

Someone tell me what is so DEVESTATING about our economy.

    • Posted By: Deus_Ex @ 09/04/2008 1:38:04 PM

What world do you live in man?

our national debt went from 4 trillion to over 9 in less than eight years.

This is the first time since the great depression that this nation has lost jobs.

People are losing their homes in record numbers and real property values have plummeted.

Major banks are facing bankruptcy and our auto, airline and other manufacturing industries are in shambles.

Health care costs are through the roof and we have people filing for bankruptcy due to the fact they can't pay their medical bills.

Gas prices have doubled since 2000, the stock market fell from a high from over 14,000 in early 2007, to now just hovering within 11,000.

The dollar has lost 25% of it's value.

What more do you need to know to understand that our economy is going down the toilet?

      • Posted By: petersot @ 09/04/2008 2:09:13 PM

And what makes you think that I want to 'roll the dice' on a first-term senator with no governing experience, in these dire and scary times?

    • Posted By: epryor @ 09/04/2008 1:41:49 PM

Have you been at the gas station lately? Have you gone to the grocery store? Have you been to Europe, where 1Euro is equal to about $1.50. Have you followed the stock market or noticed that many banks are going belly up? Have you noticed the home mortgage crisis? Maybe you are one of those "rich people" who make over $5,000,000.

      • Posted By: Deus_Ex @ 09/04/2008 1:51:06 PM

epryor -- considering that guys other posts on this page, it's obvious that like John McCain, he simply "doesn't get it"

  • Posted By: onevoiceofameriaca @ 09/04/2008 2:08:14 PM

Don,t know about everyone else but I quiver at the thought of her being plunged into the oval office God forbid John McCain dies. I mean really!!!! He has had cancer 4-times! 4-times. I don,t know the British Prime Ministers name let aline the Prime Minister of Turkey!!! Does she????????

  • Posted By: smalltownidiot @ 09/04/2008 1:52:36 PM

Wow what comments in the last hour or so. Let me start with the small town idiot comment. Listen pal, we small town idiots are the agricultural backbone that feeds you. You want Obama change, try eating your carpet or asphalt because the day a man gets elected that will not salute the flag or put his hand on the good bible will be the day us rural small town idiots stand up and give you people some change. Senator McCain is a war hero, was a POW, and respected for his experience in Washington. Sarah Palin is a welcome addition to the presidential race. She came off last night as a simply proud American who us small town idiots believe should be given an opportunity to be heard just like that Muslim named candidate. Every time I hear his name I think of 9/11 and two towers falling. So America lets see the press really look into Mr. 9/11. What are the truths about his family and their backgrounds?

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/04/2008 2:01:36 PM

Why would you comment about awful comments then write this? Do you want to make them right?

    • Posted By: Deus_Ex @ 09/04/2008 1:57:17 PM

Your name says it all. "smalltownidiot"

Tell me one thing that the small town she was mayor of ever did to contribute to America on a substantial basis?

Oh wow we should be afraid to attack McCain because he was a POW. Don't forget John Kerry was a decorated War Hero and you idiots in the republican party attacked him. John Kerry did more for his country than John McCain, Kerry lead his squad to victory, McCain lead his to defeat and had to be rescued.

So we'll leave you small town idiots to your small town bubbles and isolated views of the wider world.

Is this actually a place for educated adults to post comments about the articles, or is this a chat room for 6th graders to banter and call each other names? There's a lot of posts here, most with replies by one or two people who appear to be desperately trying to show that they were at least smart enough to get through middle school.

  • Posted By: O'BryanforDem's @ 09/04/2008 10:48:49 AM

I hope the republicans get removed from office all together and we have jus a straight democratic government and president maybe then this country can get back to being the old glory i learned about 20 years ago and served for.

    • Posted By: valark @ 09/04/2008 11:03:58 AM

If we never had Republicans in the seat of President of the United States, we would have missed out in several amazing leaders...Thomas Jefferson would be a prime example.

      • Posted By: retired @ 09/04/2008 1:51:56 PM

Thomas Jefferson was a "Republican" this party grew to become the Democratic Party. At the time of Jefferson, the Federalist were the background of the Republicans. Check your history.

Hello America: I did watch the speech by Ms Palin last night and it seems to be the usual political garbage. She talked a little over a hour but never said anything. I wanted to find out what her take was on the political mess we have and HOW she would change anything. There was not one word about this. I'm sorry but being a mother of 5 doesn't qualify you to lead the USA.

  • Posted By: wink193 @ 09/04/2008 1:19:29 PM

If Barry has been vetted, why do we know very little about him and his past? We have learned more about the Palin family in six days than we have learned about Barry in two years. We still don't even know exactly what it is that he wants to do to America other than change it.

    • Posted By: Deus_Ex @ 09/04/2008 1:21:24 PM

It's obvious you live under a rock and can only see red.

      • Posted By: petersot @ 09/04/2008 1:46:35 PM

And it is completely obvious that no amount of 'red' will change your mind, so you will continue to spew 'facts' and cling to your talking points. Remember, America was founded on 'good citizens' who rise to the occasion and lead. Not everyone has to 'vetted' by you or the media.

If John McCain opts to select Sarah, so let him. Why are you so scared? Why are you so hostile? If she is the inferior candidate America will choose. Then it is your choice as to where you'd like to live, since you are obviously surrounded by trolls, zealots, ideological idiots, and unversed in all things Deux.

I hope for your sake your horse wins. I've always wanted to see America become a socialist nation that taxes its people into oblivion, passifies the world with a hug, and gets soft on drugs and organized terror. Actually, I would just find it an excuse to move to somewhere, where my money is mine, and I don't have to subsidize someone else's boo-boo...

  • Posted By: keitholberman @ 09/04/2008 1:43:48 PM

Look, I know that Palin's performance only added to your angst. I get it, Mr. Alter, we all do. But your dyspeptic assertions as to what Mrs. Palin knows and doesn't know are astounding. Climb out of Obama's tank for a bit - smile, breathe in the fresh air, relax. The you can go back to your nuttly crystal ball.

What she does have experience in is actual, real reform. Taking on your own corrupt party is much harder than entering the political machine, staying locked step with them, and schmoozing your way to the top with teleprompter driven speeches.

All in all, it's truly pathetic to be criticizing the vp slot on one ticket, while wholeheartedly defending the TOP slot on a ticket who is immensely unqualified to run anything except maybe a rock band tour bus.

"Comment: What she does have experience in is actual, real reform. Taking on your own corrupt party is much harder than entering the political machine, staying locked step with them, and schmoozing your way to the top with teleprompter driven speeches. "

Let me take you out of the dark ages. That woman has accepted more than 400 million in earmarks during her 20 months in office. The quality of education in Alaska is terrible in fact Alaska is in bottom of the barrel in education standards. The amount of corruption that woman is tangled up in that the MSM isn't writing on could make an insect in a spider web look like a winer.

"All in all, it's truly pathetic to be criticizing the vp slot on one ticket, while wholeheartedly defending the TOP slot on a ticket who is immensely unqualified to run anything except maybe a rock band tour bus"

What's pathetic is how you bought this story that this woman is so qualified hook line and sinker.

pandering, racist, lunatics.. Alter an excellent article. It makes clear that republicans do not and never will have any concern for middle America. McCain and muckluc Sarah will as usual draw the republican nutcakes out of their caves. Let's hope there are enough rational, thinking people left to defeat these

Osama is only 7% black (African) he's roughly 40 % Arab and the rest is various European nationalities. So says the internet, and as we all know, whatever the internet blogs (daily Kos, etc) say is correct!

    • Posted By: Mikestheman1984 @ 09/04/2008 10:58:35 AM

Oh I see because Obama is black we cannot question his ability. Hey nutcase this is not an affirmative action presidency.

Put the bong down and get a job.

The snarky Ms Palin wants the media to report on her undereducated teen son going to Iraq, but would prefer that they leave her HS drop out whiskey-swillin' daughter and her HS drop out drunk boyfriend out of it. She also doesn't want the media to get too close to the fact that the Lady Bristol is having a baby after being impregnated at 16. That's bad of the media - they should leave it. She does wants the media to report her opposition to the Bridge to Nowhere - after she supported it with deed and money. But, she does not want the media to report she left her little small town broke while mayor, but please do talk about the 80% lovefest-rate as a 1 1/2 year Gov. The media should steer clear of oil talk, oil-job hubbies, oil conflict of interests, murdered dogs and Library books.

The media should stay far away from her being under investigation by a bipartisan state legislative body. And Ms. Palin really promised to cooperate with a legislative inquiry, but this week she hired a lawyer to fight to move the case to the jurisdiction of the state "personnel board" - which Palin anoints and appointed. In her cloud of rhetoric musings and snaps, Palin said speeches are just a "cloud of rhetoric." Which the media should ignore altogether. And for God's sake - for the religious right - don't talk about the lobbyist hired and ear marks received, squandered and hidden. Instead talk about how she was vetted two week ago in three hours.

But she's apparently a good hockey mom, who should be forgiven. A bit nasally though like Fran Drescher. I bet those glasses cost more than a haircut too. Stylish. She'll look good giving her sister's ex the boot.

Someone please explain how you can define the qualifications of the presidency. What made Bush qualified to lead because whatever he did I don't want my next president to do or be anything like him. And fact McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time clearly says he is not Qualified.

    • Posted By: Deus_Ex @ 09/04/2008 1:09:33 PM

Republicans play double standards my friend. They forget that their executive governor of Texas completely destroyed American Foreign Policy and the Economy in a span of 8 years. Keep in mind no other president in the history of the United States has done this.

      • Posted By: JJ4770 @ 09/04/2008 1:25:11 PM

Bush had zero foreign policy experience. When questioned, he had something close to an isolationist view of foreign policy. He specifically critized Clinton's intervention in Bosnia which he characterized as "nation building" something that he was against. Skip ahead 7 years after 9/11 and we are essentially building nations in Afghanistan and iraq. My point being that what a candidate is told to say by a pollster and policy advisor to get elected likely is not what they actually believe, and certainly does not reflect what they may do once elected. Reagan and Clinton were both critized and scrutinized for their lack of foreign policy experience and they both managed to avoid WWIII. It is foolish to put too much stock in perceived lack of experience for the ruler of the free world. I wil decide on the candidate I think will exercise the best judgment, who has a moral compass, who will be decisive, who puts the country's best interests first.

Mr. Alter, do you similarly beleive it is up to you, and the press, to examine Mr. Obama? What about the numerous reports of frustration from your brethern for Mr. Obama not making himself available for interviews and questioning during these wonderful 15 months of running for President.? what kind of follow-ups and digging have you undertaken on him? where was your exhaustive interview of him re: Jeremiah Wright's comments? Oh, I guess his one short press conference weeks later, no questions please, is sufficient. Or questioning him about Wiilaim Ayers? how many people does Newsweek have in Chicago now looking at newly released dopcs on Mr. Ayers/ Mr. Obama's relationship? As a comparison, how many do they have in Alaska? How many questions habve you asked Mr. Obama about his direct attempts to censor an intereview with the journalist who reviewed the Ayers files? how many questions have you asked Mr. Obama about his wife's comments - Oh, I forgot, those comments are all off base, and to that request you comply,, but any similar request by Mr. McCain is viewed with deep ridicule and skepticism.

So Mr. Alter, I appreciate you have taken upon yourself the role of annoiiting and burying candidates, but please do it for both sides. Equally. If Mr. Obama's prime qualiification for President and executive exprerience is the long and expensive campaign he has run, then certainly shouldn't you have asked him just a few digging questions during and about his 15 months of comments, positions, qualifications? Aftre 8Newsweek cover stories, I would think a little digging in additon to the PR would happen, but i guess you've both been very busy.
