I thought her speech was better than Obama's. She did manage to stay on message that Obama is just another liberal in a long line of liberals that thinks we can tax our way out of any problem. She is the veep pick. The fact that we are compairing her quialifications to the top of the Demacrats ticket speaks volumes about where the Dems really are at on this. She was the correct pick for McCain.

Thank you Jonathan for making sense of it all. A governor less than two years, who is now under investigation by her own state, who compares herself to a bitt bull with lipstick, wow, this is pathetic!!

This woman is a joke, she has an abismal record on energy and conservation and no experience on econcomic or internation issues. Does McCain seriously think he can pluck any woman out of obscurity and get the female vote?

"like what? 1/2 the black teenage mothers in America? "

Duh! That made no sense 100% of the black teeanage mothers in America were pregnant!

Wow, what is it in Obama's resume that is so much stronger then Sarah's, I fell to see it. She like Obama can rally and communicate her ideas, that I may add are more appealing to me. McCain's experience dwarfs Obama's so this is a perfect compliment to McCain as she learns the ropes even better. She is a very worthy contender for President if she learns all that Reagan knew. Reagan's 1964 speech was biting as well, but he also know how to connect to the middle American's, which it appears Sarah can do as well. This has now become a philisophical battle that Sarah and Obama can speak to. I lean on traditional and proven values that are based personal responsibility, integrity, and compassion that grows from self not government. Sarah has become my voice as well as many, .............others.
    Thank you Sarah.

Ragan was the Governor of California the nations most populated state, with the nations largest economy. In addition, Ragan debated on Issues not attack his opponents, plus the man knew the leaders of other nations. I can guarantee you that Palin can't even tell you who the Prime Minster of Canada is, or even the Governor of Kansas for that matter.

Mike Kilo, why would the Obama camp, leading in national polls and the electoral college, be desperate? It was mccain who chose out of desperation, to try to crack that lead!

    • Posted By: Mike Kilo @ 09/04/2008 12:37:01 PM

Simply because the tide's turning. In part because of the focus on Palin, Obama didn't get the bump he needed after the Democartic convention. This unrelenting flood of commentary on Palin can only benefit the GOP ticket. Obama who? We're already forgetting.

No doubt who you are voting for.
    B. Hussein Obama has no executive experience...As a matter of fact he has under 200 days experience.
On "Yes-No" votes he votes(?) that he is there.
The only "No" vote is to save the life of a live , born baby that was able to live through an abortion. He did that three times.

Its also funny that Dems are ripping on her being the governor over a small population state and not having any foreign policy experience. . .ever hear of a governor from a back-country little state called Arkansas?

    • Posted By: Deus_Ex @ 09/04/2008 12:21:43 PM

Yeah that governor's state become first in the nation in economic, job creation and health care coverage for it's citizens. That governor's state also had one of the highest averages in education.

That governor from no where lead this nation with an economic policy that created 22 million jobs, reduced the national debt and created a 555 billion dollar surplus. That governor was President William Jefferson Clinton and unlike you republicans, he placed people in his cabinet who understood foreign policy, energy policy and fiscal discipline.

Now compare that to Sarah Palin's record of deficits, high uninsured, and terrible educational standards, and it is no contest.

Next time you want to debate come with facts and not GOP slander.

Having just read some of the comments it is easy to see that the ONLY people reading Alter are the Obama zealots. This pretty much is the case for newsweek which I won't even bother to pick up and read when it is free. Jonathod Alter is one of the most sexist of them all, making journalism a dirty word. Guess what, no one is hanging on his words to form an opinion. NO ONE

The Republicans have revealed that they are not just against "pro-choice??? they are for "no-choice." Mitt Romney made it very clear that the last 8 years of government had been liberal in their eyes and that we had not seen what "conservative" really means. It sounds like a mixture of Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451!
Mitt and the others talked about BIG government for democrats (a government made of agencies to actually help people) whereas conservative government additions will be Palin's choosing what we can read and call art, writing laws into the constitution that disallow Americans choice (even God gave Adam and Eve choice)...Their government agencies will be ramping up for enforcement of all the things they will take away because god told them to. That kind of government needs lots of spies (because you aren???t living in a small town where relatives keep you informed), lots of phone taps, lots of police arresting reporters....Mitt, choosing the current republican candidates is choosing the end of free-will..I am sorry I ever sent you money. You have disappointed me...you guys are talking about a totalitarian government...Bush is looking better these days.

From what point of view, the back?

  • Posted By: J.Gleason @ 09/04/2008 11:32:51 AM

OK let???s start with McCain. First off he just like all other POWs is a hero. But to hear the Republicans tell it you would think McCain single handedly took over the POW camp and released all of the POWs. Let???s face it the only person telling the story is McCain and only he knows what part of it is true and what part was added for his political career which I am sure is most of it. If he was such a great military commander why wasn???t he promoted? Seems that job was for show too! He still to this day has not given the country a straight answer on his policies. He chose a VP running mate on a whim and blew his chance to show the world that he truly means what he says when he claims he will go against his party if necessary to do what is best for this country.
As for Silly Puddy Palin she is being molded by the Reps to try to steal women???s votes. It was obvious when the moved the men at the convention so they could put women in front of the podium. The Dems never had to do that even for Hillary. Doesn???t she have to be accepted by men and women alike? Palin???s speech which was written for her was full of lies and fear mongering as usual the same ole dirty politics. Have any of you been to Alaska? I have. I have also been to Wasilla. It???s nothing to brag about and there are fewer people in Alaska then in Los Angeles or New York so please lay off the experience issue, she has none! As far as her not being involved with her husband and his group to secede Alaska from the United States, try again! Don???t tell me she doesn???t support her husband and don???t tell me she would not have benefited if they had succeeded. She would have been President of Alaska! Maybe that was her plan all along!
For anyone to say she got more votes than Joe Biden, well that person is just an idiot and it???s a good thing he didn???t make it through the election. Shame on you Huckabee, I thought you were better than that.
Let???s be honest here, McCain didn???t even want Palin. The choice wasn???t even his because he didn???t want to go against his party. What does that tell you about what it would be like with him in the White house? What???s next rigging the polls at election time? Wouldn???t surprise me, Bush did it! He agrees with everything else Bush has done!
As far as leaving the families alone, Palin unlocked the door last night with her comments about Michelle Obama. Palin took off the gloves for a bare knuckle fight and I hope Obama/Biden blacken her eyes.
For Obama/Biden Please don???t let this go unanswered. Defending your self does not constitute same ole dirty politics but it does show back bone! Let???s knock out the Republicans once and for all!
For all of my fellow middle class American citizens, who like me and my family can not take anymore of the fear mongering and warmongering Republicans let???s take back our country! Consider this a call to arms! Let???s take back our country! Vote Obama/Biden 08

Everyone, my apologies for the many posts of the same write-up. I was trying to get the whole thing in. The last paragraph to my earlier post follows:
Picking Palin and calling her "change" is the McSame camp attempt to pull wool over our eyes and hope no one notices. To have supported the infamous "bridge to nowhere" and now flip for political expediency and make it seem like you've always opposed it is not being straight. To have secured some $27 million in earmarks for Wasilla and say you are a reformer leaves more to be desired. To have recently addressed the Alaska Independence party with their secessionist quest raises questions about her patriotism. To have submitted proposal for more earmarks this year raises questions about the kind of reformer she is. To have an on-going bi-partisan ethics investigation leaves doubts about fairness in executing official business. To get tutoring from the Bush people - the same people responsible for this nation???s downward spiral - is more of the same and not change. We should tell them "ENOUGH!" So when people say Sarah Palin, you say, Old wine in new wine skin, if even!

I am a single unwed mother. I have earned a bachelor's and master degree. Also, I have friends who made the choice to raise their special needs children. So what Sarah Palin is trying "play on" is something women in America deal with everyday. She chose to make her personal life public when she was introduced to America and stated she had a down syndrome child that she chose not to abort. But she chose to leave out that little detail that her daughter is pregnant...oh and now, she and the boyfriend are getting Married....that's convenient. Now the Republican Party/John McCain's campaign want to shush the Media and accuse Obama's campaign of slander. Honestly, who really cares?!...But don't patronize the American people with downplay and convenient tactics to make things seem like they shouldn't be geniune concerns. The real issue is however - Can Sarah Palin lead this country?..... Last night she stated that she started out as a "Hockey Mom". But as an educated, middle class working woman who supports family, is active in my child's school, and supports women's rights, I could NOT relate to her. Sarah Palin did not make any distinction for herself from the history of the 8 years of arrogance, negativity, and bad decisions we have dealt with or the childish and underhanded attacks that the McCain campaign has repeatedly been sending out the past few months. Additionally, she did more attacking the democratic platform and "inexperience" of Obama, than adddressing her ideals that would help lead this country to something better than what we have experienced in the last 8 years. It is almost insulting that the McCain campaign would bring someone like this in to attract women and undecided voters that the McCain/Palin campaign has the country's best interest in mind. My plea to women and undecided voters in the next few months is to look beyond the silly ads and statements that do not deal with real issues of this country but look toward the future and see which campaign has this country as a whole's best interest in mind.

The last time I checked, the Obama's candidacy have enjoy the lack of vetting that the Obama supporters are now demanding of Sarah Palin. So when you say her speech last night did more attacking than suggest what she will do to help move the country forward; I believed mean what she will do to help John McCain move this country forword --- afterall, she not the top of the ticket and if you ask me, it speak volum that she's being discuss in context with Obama and not Biden. Maybe Obama should bebate Palin and McCain, Biden. That will be a fare senarior won't you agree.

I'm glad there are still some in MSM like Mr. Alter who are willing to stand up and represent the media with true journalism, unfamiliar, of course, to the likes of Sean Hannity et al, with their intentional parochial understanding and representation of issues. Am even gladder there are still a great many Americans out there who can see through the smoke-screen of the Republican innuendos on Senator Obama and the rest of us, as opposed to talking about the bread and butter issues that affect majority of us. But I guess like was said of Senator McCain, "it's not that he doesn't care, he just doesn't know", what with eight homes scattered around several states when many of us are struggling to meet stifling mortgages for one home and put food on the table without losing our sanity.

The American people have been fooled by Senator McCain as a war hero and POW, no mean thing. But it shouldn???t be the default answer for every thing. On the Tonite show he was asked how many homes he owned, he said he did not have a house while a POW for five-plus years, and didn't even have a kitchen table. How deceitful! I imagine if he were asked about job loses and the worsening economy he would say he didn't have a job while in Vietnam, etc. I just wish more people would rise above partisanship and VOTE ISSUES this election. Let's not be dragged back to McCain's Viet-days - that's not forward-looking or how you make progress. Let's move ahead with a forward-looking candidate and let Senator McCain remain stuck in the past and as OUT OF TOUCH as can be. With all the talk by McSame people about READINESS they go for not-ready-for-the-job Palin after the Senator met her ONLY once, just to please the base and women ??? country first my foot! Then inside of 48-hours we learned more of this Lady than probably Alaskans do. What this rushed-pick tells us is that a lot of thinking doesn't go into the senator's decision. Likewise he might rush this country into another wrong war like the Iraq war.

I dare any of the Republicans in this blog that are so big on Obama's inexperience to please explain to all of us how W Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald's Rummsfeld's, Paul Wolfowitz, Condi Rice etc, etc.. stack up Vs. Obama.

They have more experience than Obama right?????

So how come your incredibly "experienced" guys were a no show at your little party?

Can it be that that's the "experience" you don't want Americans to be reminded off maibe? Can it be that your "experience" created what can be called the worst administration in American history . Is fun to talk about Obama's inexperience when you don't have to show what you did with your "superior experience"when you had the chance is it not Republicans?

So, again Republicans I ask you. If you are so proud of what your experience has given us in the last 8 years how come none of the main characters of your Republican administration in the White House showed up???? After all you supported them 100% of the time, and Sen. McCain 90% of the time..... Go on Republicans!!!! Show your pride in more than empty words!!!!

Have McCain take pictures with Mr. Bush in a pack convention sheering the men!!!

They have a lot of experience don't they????

So again, Republicans don't be shy..... Tell me where were your "experienced" people? Obama was out there showing his inexperience to 38 million Americans in his convention, where was Bush, and Cheney, and all the rest Republicans?

I dare you to tell me!!!!

So Sara Palin supporters I have yet to see anyone defend her record of running up deficits in Alaska and her congressional earmarks.

Oh and how about the final nail in the coffin. This woman's husband was part of the Alaska Independence movement. Yet they slam Obama about patriotism and love of country. You want that type of person to be your commander and chief, a person who supported a group that was totally against America?

I don't understand this experience argument. You can have a hundred years of experience and learn nothing. For example; a five year high school student is not smarter than the class valedictorian. ???John Mccain has been wrong about the war, wrong about the economy, wrong about the conflict between Russia and Georgia, wrong about using diplomacy with Iran and on each and every one of these issues Obama has been correct so much so, that Bush has been taking foreign policy advice from Obama the last three months.

      • Posted By: Lora1234 @ 09/04/2008 10:28:47 AM

Shuntashay, obviously you have never applied for a job. Experience is everything.

        • Posted By: Tonylnbv @ 09/04/2008 12:13:37 PM

Your argument is flawed. A highschool class valedictorian is smarter than a highschooler who's been there for 5 years. I can't even believe I have to say this, but a person doesn't become a valedictorian without having the best grades in their class. A person stays in highschool for 5 years because they couldn't successfully advance to the next grade.

When should the people start taking care of themselves?. What we need is a person in the White House that will create the opportunity for every America -- Poor, Middle class, and including the rich; so we can all take care of ourselves.
