I just want to say that I listened to all of Palin's speech and I was impressed! I am not a Republican and never will be but she nailed it last night! She made a clear case for why she had more practical, hands-on and relevant experience than Obama. If this country is willing to accept a man with few accomplishments and experience to be president than they should have no problem accepting a woman with a similar level of expertise (perhaps even better) as a V.P. No, she is no Clinton but she's not running for president, either. We can't have one standard for a man and another for a woman. I'm sure if Obama was a female, the media and public would be screaming about his lack of experience, too! But...he's a man and apparently that "different"...

A clear case based on lies is not a case at all.

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/04/2008 2:41:45 PM

That was not well thought out. It was vague. Not Republican?

  • Posted By: redheaded blue girl @ 09/04/2008 2:30:24 PM

Sarah Palin brings absolutely nothing to the GOP ticket except XX Chromosomes. Her views, to the extent she has any, are those of McCain, Bush and Rove. She has a lot of questions to answer about her past actions in Alaska - abuse of Governor's office, almost recalled as Mayor of Wasilla, association with Alaskan secession movement. She offers nothing to the American people. No thanks!

Incredible- did you hear what was said last night- all night from the so-called leaders of your party? You call them leaders, I call them brownshirts.

You're kidding, right? You repugnicans INVENTED the politics of personal destruction because you couldn't win on the issues!

Liberals are the ones that have corrupted this country with your carnal ways and me,me,me type thinking. You leech off the government, then when the economy goes to pot, you want change! Get a real job and education and be glad you weren't born in Ethiopia or Iran!

    Beyond the Palin

When Palin can win a national primary (over a political dynasty no less), then she will have the standing and credibility to be mentioned in the same breath with Obama. This woman is not anywhere near the most qualified person to be tapped for the VP slot. Again, for those complaining about Obama's lack of experience as a counter agrument to this valid argument - he has campaigned for 20 months and earned the nomination with over 18 million votes from the American people (not to mention an 11 year record as a State and U.S. Senator from a state with an actual population to manage).

Sarah Palin is no leader of a movement - she was Governor of Alaska for 18 months - which is the equivalent of a kid running a lemonade stand and claiming to have the experience to run Wal-Mart. How many states could she win in a primary?

She was abrasive at best last night, and showed she could effectively read a teleprompter. The fact these Republicans can actually (pretend to) get behind her exposes a far more troubling issue for them; Poor judgement and desperation. In private, they freely admit that this was terrible for this campaign but are playing the only cards they have - Culture wars, Fear, and running to the right.

It saddens me that McCain has turned in to such a sad, old puppet of the right. How could he name her as VP when he's met her once? Judgement? Country First? Really? One heartbeat away from the leader of the free world? Cute story, but let's get back to reality folks. The Republicans should be ashamed of themselves, and have lost any credibility they might have been clinging to.

As far as the sexism claims - please get real. If She wants to throw her 19 year old heading to Iraq in our face, and her special needs baby, then she will need to field questions about her pregnant daughter as well when she wants to ban sex education......So I say to her stop using the kids and the media will stop asking, which is as it should be.

The only thing more pathetic than Palin being named is that so many will actually vote for these clowns.

Palin and these goons don't think we're stupid............They know we are.

    Obama / Biden 2008

Wonder if anyone will have a competent response to this dose of reality.

    • Posted By: y585 @ 09/04/2008 2:48:33 PM

People keep taling about sexist etc...The fact that we seem to be missing is that had McCain chosen a male running mate as unknown as Gov. Palin, I would be asking the same questions of that 'unknown', as I am asking about Palin. She just happens to be a woman - so what? There is still a lot that is not known - too much - so of course investigations will be done. This is not the job to e chairman of a company - this is a job to be the second in command of the USA!!!! .......for goodness sake -

We should be thankful he is not running for office. God forbid if that would have been the case because we would be in real trouble.

Just thought I'd remind you all that you are not choosing American Idol or Pope. You are choosing the next LEADER of what USED TO BE the finest country on earth.

G.Bush has managed to put that office a breath away from a dictatorship to where our Olympic team cannot wear their colors while traveling, we are OWNED by China, and republicans show absolutely zero intelligence.

The two party system is crap and these candidates are crap. They will decide your fates. Good Grief. wake up. Demand a man or woman of substance. Except every step of this "election" is choreographed in advance by the 2 party system.

  • Posted By: bigalphaonkc @ 09/04/2008 11:26:17 AM

I don't think they get it....you simply cannot compare what Sarah Palin said to less than a 20k crown to what Obama said to over 40 million...The Republican party will lose in November no matter what they say or what they do..and here is how. In no time in AMERICAN history have we had the kind of voter turn out we have have in the primarys...EVER..Imagine what voter turn out would be in the actual election.? .If Obama receives HALF the vote of the same primary voters.. he wins in a landslide. That idiot Rick Davis has already said Mc Idiot is concentrating on the working-class "white" and disenchanted Hillary voters. Disenchanted does not mean dumb. What woman would throw away her right to choose by voting for Mc Idiot?? Quite honestly there are simply not enough republicans or "others" that can swing this election towards MC Idiot. All this is is a dog and pony show and Sarah Palin is the main attraction..

    • Posted By: mewalters @ 09/04/2008 12:30:51 PM

You ask what woman would throw away her right to choose? Me. Killing an unborn child is not a choice I want to have. There are other, more positive, choices out there no matter how a woman becomes preganant.

      • Posted By: dsqard @ 09/04/2008 2:46:59 PM

If you don't like abortions DON'T HAVE ONE!!!!! That doesn't mean you get to tell another woman what to do with her womb. The right to chose means just that. CHOICE!!! Never saw a pro-choice person going to a church and shooing the pastor because they oppose their view. Pro-life includes the people who have been already born, doesn't it????

  • Posted By: dsnyder @ 09/04/2008 2:46:41 PM

Palin needs a slap upside the head from a real champion of women, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

  • Posted By: metzlerd @ 09/04/2008 2:45:43 PM

So all you have to do is smile while lying and hurling insults at the opponent?
I didn't see all of her speech because I just couldn't take anymore. Are we giving her a pass because she's new? Why didn't she compare her mayoral experience to Obama's time in the state Senate? Why did she pick 3 years of his life before he graduated from Harvard?

If found her obnoxious disrespectful and a liar; 3 things we have in Republicans already in power; and 3 things we don't need again.
If she's a good looking woman does that mean we don't have to hold her accountable for the things she says? I hope her good looks can help the gas prices, but really I doubt it since she has in the past, been working to RAISE oil prices for Alaska.

Alaska first? I'm sorry I thought they were saying country first.

  • Posted By: vmac @ 09/04/2008 2:45:19 PM

It sounds like Palin's speech was written forgetting that she hasn't been involved in the whole 19 months of this campaign. She came off to me like a snotty wholier than thou hypocrit. All attack no substance. We need someone a hearbeat away from the Presidency that can do more than lash out and does not understand the issues facing this country. McCain does not even have the courage to pick who he wanted for his VP--He fell to the conservative Right---Hopefully they are Wrong!! For our COUNTRY's Sake--They couldn't even praise their own Party Leader (the current President) because it would remind people of the last 8 years . And, they can talk about the Congress--but Bush VETOED everything that didn't fit his scheme. The non-inclusive Right Wing Conservatives--are not going to fool the American Public with this ticket..

    no color no gender,

If you have done any hiring, you know that after a while it gets easier to spot a person who will produce results. They often haven't done the exact job you want to fill, but they show an ability to think on their feet, to learn as they go, to get quick results, work well with others, and to lift the spirits and expectations of everyone around them.

I've done some hiring, and Obama stands out as such a person. Every president learns on the job. There's no other job like it - so no one has experience.

I opt for the guy who has a vision for this country that appeals to our better nature - not our fears and limitations. I don't fear change. I don't fear people of color. I don't fear people with diverse experiences. I don't fear people with no desire to start a war. I don't fear people with an education. I don't fear people who recognize we live in a global community but who want to protect our interests in it. I don't fear moving forward and innovation. I don't fear inexperience if balanced by talent.

I do fear those who try to lead with fear. I fear those who will not admit their biases and seek to bring biases out to control others. I fear isolationism. I fear leadership that will not adapt to a modern world. I fear leaders that look back instead of forward. I fear those who prefer ignorance to looking outside "the box". I fear that our own sense of America being the best will in the end lead us to not recognize what we need to fix.

So - my hiring decision is for Obama. If he doesn't work out, in 4 years you can replace him.

I 100% agree with you. I am an indepoendent and now I am voting for macCain/Palin ticket. She is a rising star.

        "palin a rising star"

She has a journalism degree from Idaho state- she received less than 115,000 votes in Alaska for governor. Let's put the country first and worry about where she might lead us! McCain is old and could possibly leave the hockey mom in charge. I bet she couldn't even show us iran on a map.

sad....a pretty face and fear chosen over issues and education.

  • Posted By: mewalters @ 09/04/2008 2:29:35 PM

I keep reading statements about Bush wrecking havoc on us. His administration has kept us safe here on American soil. How quickly people forget what happened on September 11. We fight abroad using trained, armed military personnel to keep untrained, unarmed citizens from having to fight for their lives in burning buildings. Let's drop our shortsightedness and see the world for what it really is. A dangerous place. Yes, that is scary and most people don't like to hear it. But it's true. And when you are running a country, you have to make decisions that aren't popular but are necessary to protect people. Even those who hate you and are ignorant.

    • Posted By: navymom06 @ 09/04/2008 2:42:58 PM

To bad he has not punished the people for 9/11. Like Joe Biden said a noun a verb and 9/11 that's all you people know. The Rand Study just came out and has shown we are less safe since Bush took over the terror cells have almost doubled since we have had are ass in Iraq

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 09/04/2008 2:32:02 PM

well a whole 30% of Americans agree with you.

  • Posted By: ftsorigin @ 09/04/2008 1:43:08 PM

Sarah Palin hit a grand slam with her folksy mix of family values and downright straight talk on what the priorities of this country should be. She is 44, the same age as my wife, and she very much associated with her as a mother, as someone who puts country frst and family second and someone who will be a straight talker getting things done. It shoud resonate very well in the heartland and midwest where the Republicans will need to close the gender gap to have any chance to win this election.

    • Posted By: latinosunidos @ 09/04/2008 2:41:16 PM

Would you vote for her for President right now?

    • Posted By: JoeBear @ 09/04/2008 2:04:48 PM

You have to be kidding me. Being folksy, funny and downright ir-respectful is not my idea of straight talk. You Republicans have run this country to the ground over the past eight years, and you act like it's the Dems fault. Why don't you get a brain, take resonsability for your mistakes, and start telling the truth instead of all the crap and lies you spill so easily everytime you open your mouths

  • Posted By: onepoker @ 09/04/2008 12:58:50 PM

Guess what democrats if Bipartisanship means bowing to your side we reject it wholeheartedly! Sarah Palin stood up and said what we have all been feeling. We will win or lose this election standing for what we believe in not based on compromise to a socialist society we will fight tooth and nail until the last one of us is dead and buried!

    • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 09/04/2008 2:40:14 PM

I wonder if Sarah Palin can forthwith be deployed to Afghanistan. Since she so loves to shoot wildlife, she's perfect to track down and dispatch Osama bin Laden. Give the beautiful Alaskan wildlife a break from her itchy trigger finger.

The chilling photograph of Pro Life Palin gloating over her fresh 'kill' caribou with her young child at her side can be circulated throughout the Arab world. It should be enough to frighten those lawless Al Qaeda goons into a Pentecostal Epiphany.

    • Posted By: Jack 8590 @ 09/04/2008 1:26:26 PM

What exactly is it that she believes in? I didn;t hear anything from her that I haven;t already heard on Ruch Limbaugh.....

    • Posted By: ponders3 @ 09/04/2008 1:02:56 PM

The sad truth is that she did not stand up and tell us what she truly believes in. I know her family from top to bottom though.

  • Posted By: LetiRowe @ 09/04/2008 1:41:29 PM

All I heard last night were jokes and say no diversity. It's funny how all the media outlets are saying the same thing, just as they did after 911... and we all know what happened after that. America was deceived.

    • Posted By: blackcourt @ 09/04/2008 1:44:24 PM

Oh right... we should vote for Obama because he's black... otherwise your racist right?

      • Posted By: Disgusted American @ 09/04/2008 2:39:29 PM

Why don't you just say you won't vote for him because he is black.

      • Posted By: torres6510 @ 09/04/2008 1:52:38 PM

No, we should vote for Obama because he is new, fresh, brilliant and the real change that is needed in Washington. I don't know about you, but BUSH has been a real embarrassment to the American people. He can't even speak intellegently. WAKE UP! OBAMA / BIDEN 08

  • Posted By: bobpboston @ 09/04/2008 2:39:21 PM

This commentary is as far beyond the bounds of what is needed as was Palin's speech. You fail to see it for what it was- a neo-fascist rant devoid of truth, filled with ad hominen attacks while building a cult of personality for a hack of the first order. Hail Palin!

  • Posted By: oldjoe1938 @ 09/04/2008 1:51:16 PM

OK, let's do some serious discussion. Alaska has a population about the size of Milwaukee, WI. That's where I was born. When your high-school daughter gets knocked-up by a football player; Either they have a safe abortion or the new grandpa puts some vinyl carpet down in the basement, throws up a few 2X4's and some masonite paneling. Then comes the dropped ceiling panels. The relatives chip in some used furniture and everybody hopes the father will marry the girl. If not, she's on food stamps and trys for her GED. If the father marries her he gets himself a carrer start at WalMart at Federal Minimum and they propogate another generation.

In any case the new grandma does not wear $400.00 custom eyeglass frames because she's out working to feed the kids without RNC funding or a Federal job where, in her words, the only thing she needs to do is check on the health of the President every morning. Then again, that'll keep her on her toes and the rest of us on the edge of our chairs.

    • Posted By: football Mom @ 09/04/2008 2:13:52 PM

So, let me get this straight. The "knocked up" daughter gets her GED and the bum of a boyfriend (now turned hubby) gets a job at Walmart making minimum wage and they're now on food stamps, as they go on to make more babies and repeat the cycle all the while living with Grandma & Grandpa. No wonder you want the liberal Democrats to win! They're putting my hard earned money into your pocket! Here's a thought.....how about the grandparents help support (not enourage) the parents, UNTIL they can finish school and get a decent paying job! That way, they can now support themselves, instead of the rest of us having to pay for them!!!!!! But no....that can't be right. That would mean that someone would actually have to stand up & take responsibility for their actions!!!!!!!!

      • Posted By: mrzoid @ 09/04/2008 2:38:55 PM

I'm guessing that Carl Rove has had something to do with all the snarling Republican rhetoric. The speeches last night had that phony, hypocritical ring.. But something has changed that we can believe in. In 1984 Barbara Bush criticized vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, calling her a "rhymes with rich", apparently it???s ok( now that it???s a Republican woman running for VP) to be a ???rhymes with rich??? since Palin likens herself to a pit bull with lipstick. I also wonder what Bush the elder thinks of his Points of Light volunteers and community organizers being so totally dissed. Apparently participatory democracy can be thrown to the dogs too.

  • Posted By: Memnoch1985 @ 09/04/2008 2:37:14 PM

Excellent piece. Intelligent, well-balanced and spot-on...

Count me as an indy in the the Republican camp...

  • Posted By: Abots22 @ 09/04/2008 2:33:35 PM

"Social work is fair game now?"...Yes, and why shouldn't it be when it's the ONLY "social work" on his resume. And, especially when social work was the exact angle the Dems were taking against Palin. It is so true that Dems will accuse their opponents of what they themsleves are guilty of the most. Dripping with irony is the mainstream media.

I love how most people think they know what qualifications are needed to run for VP. An 18-month governor isn't qualified as a VP candidate but a 12-month Senator is "qualified" as a candidate for President? I have yet to run into a Dem who can logically lay out why the socialist, err....I mean Democratic platform is better for this country right now. It's sure a far cry from, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but for what you can do for your country."
