What substance did Palin have with the economy? Its the economy people. Beyond that, it was all hot air political bs that comes around every four years.

We community organizers, are definitely organized to vote against you. You have insulted 90% of the American people who have benefited from community orgainizer.

    • Posted By: blackcourt @ 09/04/2008 1:38:29 PM

Another post to tell everyone just how important you think you are. Please spare us having to read past your posts. Or perhaps you could tell us all how a community organizer has more to offer than a mayor. I'd love to hear that one.

      • Posted By: latinosunidos @ 09/04/2008 2:30:15 PM

You try running for Mayor in your town and see if you can win without the help of community organizers. Your mom and a lemonade stand will only get you so far. Community Organizers get politos elected. Just see in these next few moinths when S Palin goes on the road with McCain..guess whose help she'll be asking for?

      • Posted By: shenice @ 09/04/2008 2:14:35 PM

Easily, The first community organizers, participated in the Boston Tea Party, maybe you heard about it...The start of the American Revolution

Listen, the next time someone runs for Mayor in your towm go see who she/he looks to knock on doors, send emails and letters, orgaine rallies..etc. Politicians turn to community organizers (political science 101 would have taught you that) because they are the ones who help get politicos elected. You try running for mayor and see if hiring your mom and selling lemonade will get you the job!

How easy is it to give, not write, a speech. How easy is it to sling insults that are written for you. Good for Sarah Palin & her accomplishments & family, but how does she explain how & why she has 3 houses when most people can't pay for 1. There are many POW's & ex-military who are living on the streets because they can't afford a house. Having babies is not a skill. And how is it that if she says something hateful it is ok but if anyone has an opinion about her it is considered sexist & rude. Why is it she can call Hillary a whiner but she is not whining if the press says ANYTHING about her. Why is it the Republicans released the story of her daughter's preganancy but then says noone should say anything about it. Why is it her state believes there is enough warranted for a violation of ethical conduct but people (voters) are picking on her if they want to know if she is trustworthy. John McCain picked this woman for 1 reason only, he panicked after Obama's speech & grabbed on to a woman he thought could put him in the whitehouse without vetting her as all others are. George Bush all over again!

  • Posted By: PH2008 @ 09/04/2008 10:29:08 AM

It was amusing to listen to Palin's attack on the "Washington elite." It made me wonder if she knows which party has controlled the White House for the last 8 years and Congress for 12 of the last 14 years. Who is this Washington elite anyway? Obviously it's a group which she is very anxious to join. Election after election, we hear candidates proclaim that they are "outsiders" and not part of the Washington elite, and then they get elected and become part of the Washington elite. Will American voters ever get tired of this charade?

    • Posted By: wakefuldyer @ 09/04/2008 10:34:29 AM

If she ever does get to be in a position to go after the "Washington elite," and she has acquired her own voice, her own thoughts, and her own freedom to act, the Republcan party could possibly regret this day...

    • Posted By: josh22 @ 09/04/2008 10:41:03 AM

I agree with a lot of what you said. But it is true all the way around. Obama promises change. But his ideas of government is not much different than that of Carter when the Economy was also in recession. Democratic politicians love the fact this country is in a recession, because it makes people more receptive to their message. However, I don't think the Democrats have the answer either. Borrowing more money from China to give more government handouts is not a good long term solution.

      • Posted By: ron_from_the_boonies @ 09/04/2008 10:51:02 AM

I don't get it. The last Democratic administration basically cut the deficit completely, so there was no borrowing from anyone. The Republicans have now incurred huge deficits. Who exactly is borrowing from China? It would be useful to discuss the reality instead of repeating empty and often invalid knee-jerk rhetoric.

        • Posted By: careerdaytrader @ 09/04/2008 11:46:46 AM

Clinton didn't balance the budget it was Newt Gingrich and the Republican congress "Promise to America" that did that. Add the Internet BOOM and the millions of jobs that created and tax money collected soared! Giving Clinton credit for that is rediculous to anybody who knows the history. Did Clinton MAKE the budget during his years? No!

        • Posted By: Texas-conservative @ 09/04/2008 11:26:43 AM

Part of the difference between the 90's and the Bush administration is that we are funding a war through foreign financing. The economy was doing well through most of Bush's presidency by most indicators, although the media chose to focus on some of the more negative data. I frequently wonder if the focus on negative data has been someonwhat of a self-fulfilling prophesy.

The deficit was also cut inthe 90s (at least partially) by cutting back defense spending by downsizing the military and cutting intelligence budgets. Whether or not that contributed to 9/11, we can all speculate. But how do you pay off our current debt when you plan a trillion dollars of additional expendatures for programs?

      • Posted By: LA2000 @ 09/04/2008 10:59:22 AM

No one has borrowed more money from China than your beloved President Bush. He has doubled the national debt in 8 years. Half of our debt came in the first 224 years, the other half came in the last 8 years. The reason we borrowed all this money: Bush tax cuts to the wealthy(that McCain was AGAINST before he decided he was for them) that the nation couldn't afford. At least Obama will try and balance the books.

Hey Holy Roller - check this out:

Barack Obama is, in fact, a natural-born citizen of the United States, for the simple reason that he was born on American soil (in Hawaii, two years after it acquired statehood). The age and citizenship status of Obama's parents have no bearing whatsoever on Obama's citizenship.

Any confusion on this point is the result of misunderstanding the legal concepts of jus sanguinis (right of blood) and jus soli (right of birthplace). Here is how the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service explains the difference:

The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees citizenship at birth to almost all individuals born in the United States or in U.S. jurisdictions, according to the principle of jus soli. Certain individuals born in the United States, such as children of foreign heads of state or children of foreign diplomats, do not obtain U.S. citizenship under jus soli.
Certain individuals born outside of the United States are born citizens because of their parents, according to the principle of jus sanguinis (which holds that the country of citizenship of a child is the same as that of his / her parents).

It is a fact that under the provisions of Article Two of the U.S. Constitution naturalized citizens are ineligible to hold the office of president, but this disqualification does not apply to Barack Obama, who has been a citizen since birth.

Hey, Jack, a well-written post , but you are wating your efforts on old unholy. He is one of the pathologically obtuse who still smear Senator Obama as a Moslem, unpatriotic, etc. A sad example of what happens when the demons Karl and Rush possess a once functional brain. We usually just let him rant and rave and thank God that he REPRESENTS the republican point of view. They can have him...

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 09/04/2008 2:13:17 PM

Well said, and wasn't John McCain born in Panama? Yes it was on a military base, but if we are going to quibble on semantics, than is that not a fair arguement? Or we could all just shut the f*ck up and focus on any of the dozen issues that are actually important to America's well being.

  • Posted By: dsmb2007 @ 09/04/2008 10:46:44 AM

Does anyone else feel like their watching a real life version of The Emperors New Clothes? As a conservative republican, we're being sold on the fact that she's the real deal, a perfect candidate. We know better, it's obvious she was a rushed political choice, a gimmick. But because they are selling it to us with a straight face and such force, pushing us to believe it, we start to doubt our better judgement. I start to feel dumb for not going along with it and not seeing it, so I have to pretend to see it like they do. But I just can't do that. She's a great face for the republican party, her experience in TV and beauty pageants makes her a confident speaker. She makes a great cheerleader for the republican party, but when I realize they are trying to make her VP of the US, next to Senior McCain? I shudder to think of the consequences.

    • Posted By: Texas-conservative @ 09/04/2008 11:11:52 AM

Even still, you must admit she has had a favorable impact in her state government and sticks to her conservative principles. I'd say there may be some "reactionary showmanship" in the decision to select her for VP, but I do think that she is a good choice and has proved that she has the capability to fulfill her duties of working for the people instead of strictly working for the party.

You shouldn't feel dumb, and don't let all the negativity in these blogs shake your confidence. There's no such thing as a perfect candidate. I think it is important to support a candidate that will try to reduce government expendatures when we have such a massive deficit. I think it is irresponsible to support a candidate that seeks to change so that reality matches his idealized fantasy of what a better place America would be if we were more socialized, spending hundreds of billions of dollars for programs while we are already hundreds of billions of dollars in debt. That's like buying a mercedes when you are 2 months behind on your house payment.

Do your due dilligence and research voting records and accomplishments. Don't rely on the speech writers. They are, after all, only speeches, and the candidates actions while in the public trust are the only examples we have of how they will actually execute their policies once they are elected to office.

      • Posted By: RiversideWarrior @ 09/04/2008 12:56:20 PM

I wouldn't say that she sticks to conservative principles when she took a debt-free Wasilla City and left it $22 million in debt. How about her hiring a lobbyist to get federal government hand-outs (aka "earmarks") for her city and state?

        • Posted By: Texas-conservative @ 09/04/2008 2:24:26 PM

Because of a bond package (tax increase) that the citizens voted for.
That's different than just deciding to spend $22 million on your own. She was trying to attract business to the community. It is very common. We just voted a cople years ago here in Dallas on where the new Dllas Cowboys stadium would be built through a bond package of several tens of millions of dollars because the jobs it wold create and the business the facility would generate (re: jobs and tax revenue).

So you could call that debt, but it was directly voted for in a bond election by a majority of the citizens of the city.

Obama was a street organizer for a short period of time on the southside of Chicago but he wasn't in the Englewood neighborhood where it was needed but at age 17 he was very heavy on drugs and booze for a period of time. How he ever graduated college is a wonder. He was only a real estate attorney for a crooked businessman who wheeled and dealed just like Obama does. He sounds sincere in his speeches of lies and its people like you that eat it up. Just like the JFK speech he used last Thursday because he has used the speeches of RFK especially the words of hope and change. Do I think he can run the country? Yes, run it to the ground.

    • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 09/04/2008 2:21:37 PM

Sen. Obama is not and never was a real estate attorney. He worked in a Chicago law firm for a period of time and Reczko was that firm's client. If you have to distort the facts to make your case against Sen. Obama, you have no case against him.

Barack and Michelle Obama will be first rate as President and First Lady of the United States of America.

And the article I'm reading is dated May 2008-wasn't he busy campaigning then? He's been campaigning for over a year now, when has he made the time to introduce his own bills, rather than piggybacking on other's work?

I sat and listened to the Republican Convention last night and felt nothing but sadness. Sadness that the same old divisive, attack politics are still alive and well. I guess it???s true ??? Republicans love America ??? they just hate half the people in it.

I am saddened that the Republicans have not taken responsibility for what their policies have done to the country. There was no mention last night of President Bush. Was this just an oversight or a calculated omission since a vote for McCain would mean an extension of the Bush/Republican policies of the last eight years?

I am saddened at the hypocrisy of what I heard last night. All the same Karl Rove style attacks, all the fear mongering, all the ???America is great??? and who cares about the rest of the world??? rhetoric that was used to get Bush re-elected for his second term.

I keep hearing about ???experience???. George Bush had the executive experience they all crave. He was Governor of Texas for five years and made executive decisions. He even crossed party lines to build consensus. He filled his cabinet with some of the most experienced people in US politics ??? Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Cheney to help him run the economy and foreign policy. Look what they did to the country and the reputation of America in the eyes of the rest of the world.

I don???t want an ???experienced??? candidate if George Bush and Sarah Palin are the examples of experience. I don???t want someone I could have a beer with or a pit bull with lipstick on. I want an intelligent President who has the foresight to examine the issues and opinions of others before making a decision. Not someone who uses their ???gut??? instinct. I want a President with good judgement and not someone who uses their position to saber rattle and cast the world as a place of ???good??? and ???evil???. I want a President, who after working as a community organizer, understands the struggles of the middle class. I want a President who will restore the status of America in the world and not someone who will continue the bullying tactics of the Bush Administration. I want a President who understands the Constitution and not someone who will continue to abuse it.

I can only wonder if the McCain of Campaign 2000 ??? the campaign where Sarah Palin supported Pat Buchanan ??? would have been railroaded into picking a right-wing, evangelical as a VP choice. If he has allowed them to make the most important decision of his campaign for him, then what role will they have in his government. Look at how they have influenced the Bush Administration and the consequences of that.

    • Posted By: dsqard @ 09/04/2008 12:27:11 PM

Very well said. Just one thing. Palin did not support Buchanan.

      • Posted By: amber09 @ 09/04/2008 12:46:39 PM

Check our your facts, she did support Buchanan. He talked about that on MSNBC last Friday. Thats how he met her.

        • Posted By: dsqard @ 09/04/2008 1:22:10 PM

So the question is this: Did Palin support Buchanan in 2000?

No. Shortly after Buchanan's visit to Wasilla, and after the AP story, Palin wrote a letter to her local newspaper making clear that her appearance at the Buchanan event wasn't an endorsement of his candidacy. Published July 26, 1999, the letter said:

"As mayor of Wasilla, I am proud to welcome all presidential candidates to our city. This is true regardless of their party, or the latest odds of their winning. When presidential candidates visit our community, I am always happy to meet them. I'll even put on their button when handed one as a polite gesture of respect.

"Though no reporter interviewed me for the Associated Press article on the recent visit by a presidential candidate (Metro, July 17), the article may have left your readers with the perception that I am endorsing this candidate, as opposed to welcoming his visit to Wasilla. As mayor, I will welcome all the candidates in Wasilla."

Not long after, Wasilla endorsed Steve Forbes' unsuccessful bid for the 2000 GOP nomination.

The one complication is that Buchanan appeared on CNBC's Hardball on Aug. 30 and claimed that Palin and her husband had been supporters during is '96 campaign. "She was a brigadier for me in '96, as was her husband,'' Buchanan said. "She's a terrific gal. She's a rebel reformer." Buchanan called his supporters the Buchanan Brigades.

But on Sept. 3, Buchanan told PolitiFact in St. Paul, Minn., that while he knew Palin attended his rally in Wasilla because of press accounts, he did not know if she actually supported him as a candidate in 2000 or previous campaigns. "I can't confirm anything,'' he said.

Campaign finance reports on CQ Moneyline show she never donated money to Buchanan or Forbes. The McCain campaign is emphatic in refuting the charge.

          • Posted By: Beth Indiana @ 09/04/2008 1:45:47 PM

I apologize - I saw the same interview with Pat Buchanan. I guess I must have believed him when he said that. However, this was not my main point in my comment. The comment was intended to make people think about what 'experience' really brings and how does it compare with intelligence and judgement. My concern is this... if McCain is elected, will the evangelicals still have such a large say in the governing of this country?

            • Posted By: dsqard @ 09/04/2008 2:13:22 PM

I was not picking on the lady's comments, I really thought they were well presented. I just wanted to make sure that we try to stop misconceptions. I am an Obama supporter and want to make sure the facts are straight no matter what side anyone is on. I did not take your questioning me as an attack, and I did go back to make sure that I had read the info on Buchanan right. That is why I copied it directly from Politifact and pasted it here.

How could Obama have the nerve to be a street organizer when he was heavy on drugs himself and booze. Also a chain smoker. The only college he attended was Harvard to become a lawyer to a crooked real estate broker. You don't have to go to Harvard to be a real estate attorney. He never used his law degree. How many years did he attend fou or eight? And why did he get involved with scum?

        • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 09/04/2008 2:11:54 PM

Not so fast. Sen. Obama's degrees from Columbia and Harvard easily outclass Sarah Palin's post-secondary education. Sen Obama is intelligent enough to be gracious as well as kind, something clearly lacking in Gov. Palin's 'I'm so clever" juvenile performance last night.

As for her self-ikmportant 'administrative experience,' Sen. Obama is not planning when he is president to auction Air Force 1 on E-Bay or serve moose stew to visiting dignitaries.

Also, Sarah Palin has admitted to experimenting with marijuana in her youth, chirpily adding, "Unlike Bill Clinton, I did inhale."

      • Posted By: ELLENMILTON @ 09/04/2008 1:15:39 PM

You ask why did Obama get involved with scum----ask McCain about his involvement with the Keating 5. Ask Palin why she had the top cop fired because he wouldn't fire her x brother in law. As they say in the Bible Belt - you who are without sin - cast the first stone.

Palin showed she had "no class" last night by degrading Barack Obama...When the media attacked her daughter Barack Obama told his staff to back off...what a class act...Secondly, she gave the typical scare tactic Republican speech. I voted Republican in the last 3 elections, this time I will not....I am a Republican and I know when I have been duped....Republicans let's be honest with ourselves "Bush. Cheney" politics has reeked havoc in our nation and world....no more..Palin isn't ready now...maybe in 8 years.

I listened to all of Palin's speech and I was impressed! I am not a Republican and never will be but she nailed it last night! She made a clear case for why she had more practical, hands-on and relevant experience than Obama. If this country is willing to accept a man with few accomplishments and experience to be president than they should have no problem accepting a woman with a similar level of expertise (perhaps even better) as a V.P. No, she is no Clinton but she's not running for president, either. We can't have one standard for a man and another for a woman. I'm sure if Obama was a female, the media and public would be screaming about his incredible lack of experience, too! A man who's only major accomplishment that got him national recognition has been writing 2 memoirs about himself. But...he's a man and apparently that "different"...

I have to leave. We're a group of scientists that meet with Christian Fundamentalists every Thursday. Our job is difficult. They have one book and we have many. Ours were recently written based on scientific results, theirs was written in 832 by a Spanish monk after the Council of Nicea where they threw out 25 other books of Jesus' life and decided on the four they got by stealing the book from the local motel.
