Indeed. They attack Obama for inexperience but think it's OK to have an even less-experienced person in a VP slot with an above-average chance of becoming president suddenly. Looks more like quota hiring than breaking a glass ceiling.

Palin also has lots of hypocrisies in the whole story about Alaska. Here's a state that talks a great game on self reliance yet is #1 inb the country by a good margin in federal spending per person.

She talks about how taxes are bad, yet her state government is basically financed by taxing oil and oil companies rather than people (who, BTW, are addicted to the Permanent Fund Dividend checks).

And all the stuff like the Bridge to Nowhere came from her OWN PARTY. And from GOP-leaning voters who kept voting the likes of Sen. Stevens and Rep. Young into office based heavily on how much spending they brought home.

Sarah Palin doesn't possess the self-awareness to question her own beliefs, and this comes across as confidence. Intelligent people realize that they do not know the answers to all questions... so what I see in her is a lack of the depth of thought or character to be a true leader.

So I guees Palin first needs to write a memoir to demonstrate her self-absorption.

This entire election cycle is a nightmare. McCain is not Bush, but as far as domestic policy is concerned he and the republicans appeal primarily to white, straight, rural voters; and white wealthy conservative voters. Governor Palin exceeded expectations last night, but we already know Obamas deficits, and her outreach was not comprehensive.
Obama has little foreign policy experience, and his domestic policy appeals primarily to urban, elites, young, and minorities. Urban and suburban middle class democrats are left wondering what do. Hillary called us invisible. Now we really are.
After Bush gay bashed his way into a second term, I was looking forward to 2009. Now I've suspended my optimism to 2013.

Well of course she looks poised - she's a former beauty queen (do they know how to work a stage and crowd or what?) plus she has the whole RNC staff writing her material. Let's see how she does when - make that IF - the press actually gets to ask an unscripted question on, say, the economy or foreign affairs, e.g. the crisis in Georgia.

Her answers can't compare to Barry's. First he blames the Georgians...Then he wants the U.N. Security Council to handle it...UNTIL one of his handlers informed him about Russia's veto power(even I knew that)...then he repeated McCain's words from earlier in the week. Barry is clueless.

I'll bet Hussein thought Atlanta was under siege.

I want to thank Sarah Palin for an outstanding speech! She energized the Reublican base and gave the media a taste of what a force she will be....for the republicans. I also want to thank her for energizing the democrats because now, the gloves are off baby - her mockery of community organizers, liberals, and pretty much the workers and middle-class of America will now stand up to the smug and shameful display that was put on at the RNC. I mean Americans should ask themselves if that's what they really want to see for the next 4 years - seems a heck of a lot of what we had to deal with for the last 8 years if you ask me. Sarah Palin is just George W. Bush with heels and lipstick.

  • Posted By: NotaHockeyMom @ 09/04/2008 10:11:04 AM

I continue to be alarmed at McCain's decision to select Sarah Palin as his VP. Not because of her seemingly complicated personal life, but because I think that Palin is not the only member of the McCain-Palin ticket who doesn't know what a VP does on a daily basis. Is he choosing her to be his trusted confidante like Mondale (or Gore)? Doubtful, since he is investing the energies of experienced Republican party members to educate her on the nuances of international and domestic policies. Is he choosing her to take on some administrative bureaucracy issue (reducing government inefficencies) like Gore? Scary, if he is since her credentials show that she wants to reduce funding for unwed mothers, yet build grossly inappropriate hockey complexes (yes, she is a hockey mom!). Tell me that he didn't choose her to be Dick Cheney to his George W. Bush; I can't take another 8 or even 4 years with a Machiavellian VP pulling the puppet strings - although she does profess to be a hunter, I think that shooting Republican party members while on a hunting party isn't in their best interest either. So why? It seems clear that this was another maverick choice by McCain that wasn't fully thought through or, at the very least, only thought through until inauguration.

IIt's almost a week, and Gov Palin still hasn't answered any questions, other than she can read a pre-programmed speech, to her choir.
The GOP treats the electorate, as if it's dumb. And judging by the comments, to a degree, they're right.
If Sarah Palin was anything but a puppet, she would've demanded to asnwer questions from the Media. Instead, she's letting her strings be pulled, by her puppet-masters.

Mayor vs. community organizer. I liked that one. I don't think we will be hearing much more from Barack about the time he spent as a community organizer.

Sarah Palin took her gloves off...let the fight begin. The speech was a well crafted no issue Rovian attack speech against Barack Obama. What was surprising was her jibe against Michelle Obama after the McCain position of keeping the families out of it. I reckon that is back in play....the prescription drug addicted Cindy McCain, the adulterous Cindy and John McCain, the promiscuous 16 year old daughter of Sarah Palin who preaches abstinence but failed to convey her message to Bristol her own daughter. Palin's statement about Iraq war as God's will....does she think that George W. Bush is God. Her attempted removal of books offensive to her religious beliefs form the Wasilla Public library. Her indictment on misuse of her gubernatorial office for firing the Alaska Commissioner of Public Safety, her firing of the Wasilla Police Chief to receive campaign contributions and the list goes on.

For those who think we are currently giving out money to China, take a hard look at our foreign trade deificits and our unbalanced federal budgets. There is no way Obama can do worse than Bush and McSame! No way! Palin believes that global warming is not "man made" as the arctic melts away on her states north borders. Palin believes creationism should be taught in public schools...nothing wrong with teaching creationism or intelligent design in churches where it belongs! This country was formed in part on the basis of religious freedom and we don't need a dimwit like Sarah Palin to force religion down our throats.

You people are amazing. This woman does not have a clue. You would do anything to not vote for a black man as president. Get over it already. Look past his color look beyond your prejudices join the real world. You claim black folks hold on to the past you are the ones stuck in the past . You would rather vote for a white woman than a black man. People do you realize that if anything happend to John McCain she would be the PRESIDENT!!! How scary is that?

    • Posted By: josh22 @ 09/04/2008 10:07:52 AM

I'm not at all again a black president. I could vote for Colin Powell or any number of black men or women. It is his policies that scare me. I don't want the United States become the new France. Yes, times are hard. Yes, we are struggling. But I don't believe borrowing money from China to give more handouts is the answer.

    • Posted By: josh22 @ 09/04/2008 9:56:10 AM

Well, lets see Obama wants to move in the direction nationalizing health care. He wants to give out money across the board for college education. And a million other promises. So we are going to borrow more money from China to give out handouts. Somehow, Palin doesn't sound so scary.

  • Posted By: missconservative @ 09/04/2008 10:07:11 AM

I quite honestly was not impressed. Sarah "Token" Palin (or the Stepford Veep, as I like to call her) recited a rehearsed speech written for her by Bush's speech writer. She attacked Barack with gusto but never once spoke about how she empathizes or helped the working class in Alaska. People in the lower 48 have lost their homes to foreclosure, have to decide between filling their gas tanks with just enough gas to get them to work, how will they buy groceries, etc. It's all good and well that she sold the state's private jet, but does she plan the same thing for Air Force One? Maybe she can funnel the proceeds from sale of that plane to help people who have to travel to work by car as there is no public transportation as an alternative. Or maybe she can send the chef at the White House to prepare meals for the homeless within blocks of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Berate Obama all you want about being a less-than-thou Community Organizer, but I appreciate the fact that Obama understands what's going wrong for the working class. His solutions may not all be the best, but in rehab a person is taught that the first step is understanding there is a problem. John McCain just doesn't get it.

  • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 09/04/2008 9:14:21 AM

Palin only had to show one night of Star Power to match Obama. Obama is now in a crossfire of McCain attacking him from the middle (moderates) and Palin attacking him from the conservative position!
Bitterly clinging to each other in the far Left extremo-Lib corner are two extremo lefty Libs. And Biden thinks he's the BRAINS of the outfit!!!

This woman is NOT like Obama. She is not an agent of change. Her speech was nothing more than cheap insults to Obama and vague information about herself and what she has "accomplished" in the last couple of years. She is cut from the same tired old Republican cloth as McCain . I know the GOP wants to paint her as their Obama and make her a dynamic figure, but it's not going to work. What kind of a mother puts her own ambitions ahead of her pregnant 17-year old single daughter and mentally handicapped infant son? I think Republicans need to seriously consider this woman's decision making abilites and her values. I have to say it is going to be fun to watch Biden mop the floor with Palin and show the American audience what she is really about. Go Obama and Biden!

Some Democratic leaders including Obama but not Joe Leiberman have asked what have we accomplished in Iraq? John McCain was right in his support for the Iraq surge. Iraq today is in relative peace and is no longer hostile to the United States. Iraq is currently producing two and a half million barrels of oil a day and is capable of producing four and half million barrels a day. At $120 one hundred and twenty dollars a barrel Iraq has current oil revenues of $300 three hundred million dollars a day. Those revenues can grow to $500 million dollars a day with increased production. Thanks to the John McCain support of the war and the surge $300 million dollars a day are not being funneled to enemies of the United States to support terrorism around the world and to buy missiles and nuclear weapons that can be used against the United States. With an income stream of three hundred million dollars a day, Iraq was capable of purchasing hundreds of nuclear weapons. Our current progress with North Korea on nuclear issues is a result of cutting off the money flow and purchase of missiles and nuclear technology from North Korea to Iraq.

    • Posted By: Zig Zag @ 09/04/2008 10:02:24 AM

First, don't call Joe Leiberman a Democratic leader. He is a self-serving, opportunist, who realizes he is going to lose his next re-election bid and his only hope now is that McCain will win and throw him a bone.

Second, the idea that Iraq would have used all that oil money to buy hundreds of nuclear weapons if we hadn't invaded - well, that's just stupid. The whole case for the war was that Iraq was building weapons of mass destruction - hence they couldn't buy them - and guess what? There were none.

      Just more empty republican rhetoric.

    • Posted By: alan.lockett @ 09/04/2008 9:55:06 AM

I am afraid in your zeal for McCain you are misstating the facts. Iraq gave up its nuke program in the mid 1990's, and all its intransigence on the matter was only intended as posturing for Iran.

There was no good reason to go into Iraq in the first place. McCain did support the surge, which has been a success. However, I only support the effort in Iraq from a "you broke it, you bought it" point of view. After killing 100,000 Iraqi civilians and destroying their country for no good reason, we have a responsibility to help them rebuild. McCain's surge was effective for this purpose, and I'll give him the credit he is due.

Hopefully, I'm right in thinking that McCain is no neocon, and won't actually engage in more preemptive wars. I'm not convinced, though.

As a dissapointed Hilary voter I was uncertain still about who I was voting for. I watched the Democratic convention and felt good about what I saw and heard but was still unsure but after watching Palin's disgusting performance last night there is no doubt in my mind who I should be voting for. The disrespectful way she mocked Senator Obama was too much for my taste. I understand that politics will get tough but she was downright nasty. I also found it in bad taste for her to be complaining about the media's treatment of her when she was complaining about Hilary being a whiner. If McCain thought that he could get Hilary's voters with this woman he is dead wrong. She did get the republican base going but she also got the democratic one fighting together again.

Joe Biden, The American People, The National Enquirer & The People of State Of Alaska will EXPOSE Palin for the Fraud she is !!

ST. PAUL, Minn. ??? Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her Republican supporters held back little Wednesday as they issued dismissive attacks on Barack Obama and flattering praise on her credentials to be vice president. In some cases, the reproach and the praise stretched the truth.

    Some examples:

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform _ not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

    • Posted By: pinkvik @ 09/04/2008 10:00:18 AM

thank you for posting the actual facts. I saw a McCain commercial claiming that "Liberals" had "years of deficit spending" -- which made me laugh considering that Bush has been the one spending money we don't have like water (when Clinton left him with a SURPLUS in the budget). I guess Bush is a liberal now.

Makes perfect sense as we have seen it before -- the GOP re-writing history when it is convenient and when they need to grab votes from uninformed Americans.
