Oh, Susannah! Long ago and far away I was so impressed by your dogged determination during the Rathergate thing. That said, how about easing off your inner cynic? If the woman had appeared on stage without that baby her detractors would be yelling about how she was "hiding" him. She appears with him and cynics call it a pr stunt. Speaking from experience I know (and so should you with 2 new babies) that being up late at night or in a noisy, bright setting has 0 impact on 4 month olds as long as he was being well cared for.

THAT IS VERY TRUE AS A FATHER OF 6 I KNOW THAT IF A BABY HAS SAY COLIC YOU SHOULD RUN YOUR VACUME CLEANER THE SOUND HAS A CALMING EFFECT ON THE BABY FOR SOME REASON !

...continued...Sarah's family is not a media show. They are real and no one has the right or knowledge to judge her character based one night. The biggest night of her life. Surrounded by ALL her family is how it should be.

What a beautiful picture. Stop the bickering and just look for a moment at the love this mom has for her baby. No one

Oh, Susannah! I was so proud of you during the Rathergate stuff, please ease off that inner cynic. Mrtoadhall's comment was EXACTLY was I was going to post. Plus, as I know from experience, and you should as well from your babies, 4 month-olds are not at all impacted by bright lights, loud music and late nights (unlike say 19 year olds).

  • Posted By: mrtoadhall @ 09/08/2008 3:10:13 PM

As a fellow cynic, the media firestorm would have made a big deal if her baby had not been there. Can you hear the comments? Is she ashamed of him? Does she have a sitter that doesn't speak English? Obviously she doesn't have time for her baby? Where is the baby? Is he sick? Does he have an Alaskan virus? There is no winning, when it comes to media reports. Media is just something to be tolerated, so you can try to form your own views.

Palin family shoud not be brought into this, this race should be about the America public issues. The Economy, health care social security, immagration and the Iraq war just to anme a few. Instead anme calling has won the day and the general public cheated out fo plans and response to the real issues. I feel fro Palin daughter the spot light will be on her and her to be husban, all unwanted.

what do we think of women who answer the call to serve the country in the Armed Services? Are they all "bad" mothers too? Sarah Palin is clearly a patriot who wants to serve and we should be grateful. She, her immediate family and extended family of caretakers appear to be entirely competent to take care of their own. Mother knows best.

  • Posted By: texasmamma @ 09/08/2008 1:15:42 PM

yeah, and the baby looked miserable too, all the screaming, crying and carrying on every time the camera caught him, held by one loving family member after another. Please get back to your own mothering and leave Sarah Palin alone.

I'm amazed that people believe the current McCain-Palin talk about changing America -- has anyone noticed that the chief strategist of the McCain-Palin campaign is Steve Schmidt -- a Karl Rove protege and former staffer of the 2004 George Bush campaign. Are McCain-Palin & Schmidt really all about change? I personally find this very hard to believe - maybe I'm more cynical that this author

It is fascinating that people are contending that candidates for President need experience as US Senators, rather than Governors. After all, how can one have foreign policy experience? The irony, is that in the last 20 presidential races (going back to 1924), only ONE president was a US Senator: John F Kennedy. Why? Because Americans have tended to be more comfortable with candidates with executive experience, rather than senatorial experience.

This year marks an exception to the rule, in that our new President will be a Senator. So the selection of a Governor as Vice-President, as John S. McCain has done with Sarah Palin, helps to provide the executive experience the American people have traditionally expected.

I am proud to see Senator McCain round out his ticket with someone OTHER than a US Senator.

    The speech was excellent.

Recheck you history books. Do the names Truman, Johnson, Nixon and George H. Bush sound familiar? They all came from the Senator. Even Gerald Ford came from the Senator, but he wasn't elected.

      • Posted By: osteonc @ 09/07/2008 9:27:50 PM

Truman, Johnson, Nixon and Bush were all Vice Presidents before becoming President. Truman and Johnson succeeded to the presidency after the sitting president died. Gerald Ford came from the House of Representatives and was not elected to the presidency.

As a cynic, I immediately thought she was playing the "special needs" card, for which I felt scorn, not admiration. She's already thrown the pregnant daughter to the wolves for her own political ambition. But I hadn't thought of the hour until I heard someone else mention it, and you're right, what was he doing out late at night in a hall filled with screamers? I know I was really digusted by the number of times they cut to the shot of the girl or first dude holding the baby, and Spindly McCain rocking her own black one. These horrifying phonies will stop at nothing and people keep buying it. Chilling.....

So it is ok for Obama's children to be on stage at their age (possibly past their normal bed time) but not the Palin children?? This is the family she has and using children as a photo op is what is done in these situations. As far as whether Trig should have been there, where else would you have him other than in the arms of the family who loves him?

      • Posted By: meowbaby7 @ 09/06/2008 2:27:49 PM

Don't you see a difference between 7 & 10 year olds and a 4 month old baby? The 'fact' that children being used as photo ops to manipulate your emotions is what is usually done in these situations doesn't make it right. That's a poor argument and no excuse. It's still wrong. They are exploiting their children for political gain. That's the only reason the baby was there. Do you think she should have, or is going to have the baby around all the time while she's working? If not, will she be able to spend enough time taking care of him? Don't Evangelicals have people who can babysit for them? Where else would I have him? Perhaps at home asleep snuggled in his crib .

        • Posted By: buckosu @ 09/06/2008 11:00:47 PM

Additionally, your sexism is showing. Why should you ask whether Gov Palin will be able to spend enough time with her child unless you also ask the same question about Senator Obama? You also chose to throw in a dig at Evangelicals (I am one). I will say again, the best place for the baby is snuggled in the arms of his loving family. BTW - I am also the parent of a son with Down Syndrome.

        • Posted By: buckosu @ 09/06/2008 10:56:10 PM

Since you ask - No I don't see the difference in this context. Both the Obama children and the Palin children are trotted out to illustrate that the candidates are loving parents (as are the McCain and Biden children although they are all old enough to make the choice about whether to appear themselves). It appears to me that all four of these families are very special.

  • Posted By: illinoisgmh @ 09/04/2008 3:04:28 PM

am I supposted to vote for John McCain because Sarah Palin has a child with Downs Syndrome or a 17 year old daughter who is 5 months pregnant? These are the cirumstances of her life and I wish she and her family well in dealing with them, but are we Americans really so simple minded? I want to know how she and McCain will fix the economy and get us out of Iraq. I want to know why after 8 years of horrible governing, any republican anywhere should get anybody's vote.

I agree, Inever heard a word concerning the real issues facing the American population...$4.00 gasoline, health care premiums that I don't know if I can pay, electric rate sky rocketting, heating oil? Give me a break, amd I'm supposed to be impressed with an ignorant, nasal toned , broad with a barrel of problems of her own making. Go home Lady, and get your own house in order before you even consider making choices for me

Could be because of the Dems blocking everything so they can try to win the election by simply saying Hope and Change LMAO How is that 9% approval rating of your democrat congress doing anyway? 9%? So much for change.....

  • Posted By: forte88 @ 09/04/2008 7:51:00 PM

You gottta be friggin kidding me!!! What impresses me is when a single mom who works two jobs waitressing and has a sick child at home, and little or no health insurance makes sacrifices to take care of her family. This over priviledged lady is no where close. I don't feel sorry for her in the least. 5 kids? Someone needs to tell her that it's a vagina, and not a clown car! This right wing, bible thumpin', polar bear hatin', environmental disaster waiting to happen needs to go. We already had 8 years of this ideology and look at where we are. At war, record debt, soaring fuel costs, shredded constitution, no habius corpus, and the list goes on. Last time you voted for the person you wanted to have a beer with. Now you want a hockey mom for president because your impressed she has a disabled kid? Wake up and vote for someone that can really heal the wounds from this last adminstrations abuses. All of our allies would get behind Obama. In fact a poll showed that Europeans would vote (if they could) for Obama: 94% Obama, 6 % McCain. These are our friends and allies talking to us. Not terrorists. I guess I can sit here and spill out facts forever, but there are always going to be a large number of people that will vote for the person they can discuss diapers and face creams with, or have a beer with, over someone that is ivy league educated, charismatic, and loved by our allies. And i'm sure these are the same people that will say being loved by our allies is not a good thing too. Ignorance abounds at dangerous proportions.

    • Posted By: concho rose @ 09/06/2008 3:32:12 PM

This is a stunt to get people talking about everything but the facts... $4.00 gasoline, health care sky rocketing, groceries doubling, heating oil and electricity going over the top..Do we really need a VP that can field dress a moose?

    • Posted By: cm2120 @ 09/04/2008 9:01:01 PM

Yes! I agree 100% with all these comments! It is just so incredibly frustrating to me that so many people DON'T GET IT! This woman went back to work 3 days after her special needs baby was born.... I don't believe that shows fortitude, I think that illumincates the fact that she is a terrible mother who would rather pursue her own ambitions than put her precious family first. I find her to be a mere prop for the GOP, this too will be at the expense of her family.

      • Posted By: ilsalund @ 09/05/2008 10:06:24 PM

you rock. I have been called all sorts of names for saying half of what you said. It heartens me to read that there are other thinking people out there who are demanding better than what the status quo has been for 8 tortuous years. Thank you, friend

I am a middle-aged white woman with a child and a professional career. Unless she and her husband plan to have someone else raise their children, there is no way that she/they can do the job of VP and give full-time to that job--which is what all of us should expect. The problem is that their children should also be able to expect more than this type of position will allow.

I found her "speech" to be little more than a family slide show followed by a series of trite, rude, superficial criticisms of the careers of other people. The tone and the superficiality of it lead me to believe that she is not a person who thinks deeply, there was no evidence that she has any knowledge of current issues, and the persona scripted for her ended up reminding me of one of the characters from the movie "Best In Show". She is hardly ready for prime time and, it seems to me, she (and we) would be better off if she went back to Alaska, dealt with her family issues, got more seasoning as a state-level politician and left the VP position to some other woman--surely there is a Republican woman whose house is in order and who has an appropriate level of experience.

She and her speech left me cold. I am not impressed.

    • Posted By: concho rose @ 09/06/2008 3:23:52 PM

I couldn't agree with you more... I too am a middle age woman, and she offends me. I heard not a word that left me thinking that she is skilled in any way to be VP or Pres. She is a blow hard.. with 5 children, one preg teenager and one special needs child.. Go home Toots and get your act together

Family slide show: Obama???s mother was pregnant when she married his father. Obama???s mother and grandmother were working mothers. Obama???s father was an alcoholic; his father???s friends said that later in life, he "was drinking too much".

  • Posted By: 2006pavelo @ 09/06/2008 1:07:23 AM

I share your concern; here are few thoughts that I and my wife wrote down after her speech.

5 month old baby belongs neither in the audience nor on stage, surrounded by loud screaming and flashing lights, at a gathering of thousands.

Trig Palin was born with Down syndrome. According to NADS (National Association for Down Syndrome) ???Many children with Down syndrome have health complications beyond the usual childhood illnesses??? [they] have a higher incidence of infection, respiratory, vision and hearing problems as well as thyroid and other medical conditions???.

Perhaps Trig Palin suffers from none of these ailments, but any infant???s high susceptibility to infection might be reason enough for the parents to avoid subjecting him to large crowds. Would it not have been wiser if baby Trig made his appearance in the convention hall via satellite from a hotel room in care of a family member or a baby-sitter?

Trig Palin is obviously a very quiet child. He does not scream or struggle the way other infants his age might have done. Down Syndrome genotype affects a toddler???s response threshold and intensity (1). Because of a muted response to stimuli, infants with Down syndrome can appear less volatile and fearful than other babies, and often exhibit less anxiety upon being separated from their mothers (1). Baby Trig's inability to express the level of discomfort and anxiety he is experiencing seems to have made him an ideal political prop for his parents.

Governor Palin would like us to entrust her with the welfare of all the children in this country. Yet in caring for her own baby, she showed an alarming lack of judgment.

I agree, it was a cheap shot to further political ambitions of his mother

    • Posted By: buckosu @ 09/06/2008 1:20:55 PM

I don't know that kind of a doctorate is held by Drs. Osten and Kuhl. Whatever it is, they should know better than to say "Trig's inability to express the level of discomfort and anxiety he is experiencing etc". For myself, my PhD is in Genetics and I am a parent of a 26 year old son with Down Syndrome. I can assure all that inability to express discomfort and anxiety (or comfort and joy) is not at issue here.
