It is fascinating that people are contending that candidates for President need experience as US Senators, rather than Governors. After all, how can one have foreign policy experience? The irony, is that in the last 20 presidential races (going back to 1924), only ONE president was a US Senator: John F Kennedy. Why? Because Americans have tended to be more comfortable with candidates with executive experience, rather than senatorial experience.

This year marks an exception to the rule, in that our new President will be a Senator. So the selection of a Governor as Vice-President, as John S. McCain has done with Sarah Palin, helps to provide the executive experience the American people have traditionally expected.

I am proud to see Senator McCain round out his ticket with someone OTHER than a US Senator.

    The speech was truly fascinating.

I'm glad that Ms. Meadows identified herself as a cynic; although the self-identification really wasn't necessary. It was apparent from her comments suggesting that 4-month-old Trig was only present at campaign events as a prop and to gain votes.

Ms. Meadows is indeed fortunate that she has two healthy children. Were she the parent of a child with Down Syndrome or other special needs, she might have realized that to leave Trig home with a babysitter on such an important evening for his family would have caused some people -- dare I say cynics? -- to charge that the Palins were ashamed of him and that they left him home so that his disability would not be photographed.

Including Trig at this momentous occasion signals that he is a member of the Palin family, and has every bit as much right to participate in family occasions as his siblings.

Im intrigued by the theme of the RNC last night, being that they are going to shrink government and eliminate social service funding, but then apparently the shameless pandering was just to much to resist, because Sarah Palin "would be a friend and a fighter for you" special needs children having families. What? So the idea is to eliminate social rograms that don't matter to you? Sounds a little bit.... whats that word? Douchebagish.

  • Posted By: cbinpa @ 09/04/2008 8:22:59 PM

Please, America, can we use our heads and not our emotions in making this decision? If you want the government to continue on it's path to trounce your civil rights in the name of "national safety" and "pro life",if you want to stop scientific research that promises REAL solutions to major health issues, if you want to continue to have this nation go further into debt, if you want to continue to be viewed negatively by the rest of the world, then vote Republican. If you want a forward looking administration that wants to diversify our energy production and get us off our dependency on foreign fuels by developing new technologies, if you want the government OUT of your personal reproductive decisions, if you want your civil liberties back habeas corpus, privacy, if you want our nation to be a leader in scientific research, not hamstrung by religious zealots. if you want to regain the respect of the rest of the modern world, than vote Democrat. It's that simple. Don't vote for a disabled child, don't vote because you agree or disagree with how late a child should be up, don't vote because she's hot or he's a vet. Vote on the issues, know what you believe, and vote with your mind, not your emotions. Vote for the candidate team who will LEAD this country forward, not backward.

The issue isn't "bring special needs child along" or "leave special needs child at home". It should be "stay at home with your special needs child". And maybe keep an eye on the other children.

Hey, let's pick a president on baby pictures. Cutest babies win.

    • Posted By: olderwiser @ 09/04/2008 7:57:04 PM

Better, let's take scenic pictures of the candidates' state scenery. Best panorama wins. Of course, we'll have to vote on it to get a president, but it let's us avoid all of those touchy issues that plague us from lack of attention while we look at the pretty pictures.

  • Posted By: keepperspective @ 09/04/2008 7:32:17 PM

Actually, the Obamas live full time in Chicago, not D.C. I don't care about a baby being up for a parent's big night either, but let's keep our facts straight.

  • Posted By: agingactor @ 09/04/2008 6:48:44 PM

I, too, was pregnant with twins late in life - also my first pregnancy. They were not identical, and my son did have Down Syndrome. For many reasons - no life insurance, looking forward to a daughter with aging parents and a brother who always would need extra care, etc., not to mention that his condition threatened my pregnancy and the health of my daughter if i miscarried - we chose to have my son stopped (I suppose one might say "killed") in utero at 23 weeks. I thanked God when we found that neither kidney would function and that he would have died shortly after birth anyway. As a result of that experience, I do not judge anyone's decision - but I firmly believe that the entire topic of abortion is more complicated than many accept.

Actually, St. Paul is in the Central time zone, and Alaska is 3 hours earlier, in the Alaska time zone. So, you see, Trig's internal clock was telling him that it was only 7:00, not 10. And, by the way, he was ASLEEP. The Obama children, however, having lived in DC for the past 2 years, in the Eastern time zone, were in Denver, on Mountain time, which made their internal clocks registering midnight rather than 10 pm when their daddy was giving his big speech.

Frankly, I don't really care if the kids were up too late. It was their parents' big night, and they should be permitted to share in the excitement. But BE FAIR, FOR GOODNESS SAKE!

  • Posted By: Lora1234 @ 09/04/2008 2:33:33 PM

I watched very carefully and that baby did not look as if he was in any distress at all. In fact, he was loved and cuddled the whole night. More disgusting was the Obama's kids interrupting adults "what city are you in, Daddy?" I wanted to barf.

    • Posted By: mdteacher @ 09/04/2008 2:57:33 PM

yikes. you're really going to chastice a 7 year old for speaking enthusiastically to an image of her father? scary.

      • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 09/04/2008 3:07:07 PM

Yet you chastize a successful mother of five? Scarier

        • Posted By: mdteacher @ 09/04/2008 3:35:50 PM

I didn't chastize a mother of five. I simply responded to the comment about Obama's beautiful daughter. Palin's children are beautiful, too. Sportlock, are you suggesting that we should discriminate against children based upon their parents' political affiliation? That is your suggestion, not mine. I am simply stating that the view that children should be "seen and not heard" is antiquated.

I never thought I was capable of aborting a baby. But, as Republicans have become so fond of saying, "life happens."

            TALK ABOUT SCARY!!!!!
Guess life doesn't always happen does it? Depends on the mother apparently. And you have the nerve to speak badly of Sarah Palin?

            • Posted By: mdteacher @ 09/04/2008 5:22:42 PM

One more time, and then I'm done with you:
Your response to me and your careful editing of my comments is clever, but heartless, and ultimately stupid. This is the issue in the campaign, isn't it? Do I want clever, Rovian tactics to win the day? Or do I want compassionate, thoughful governance. (Governance - look it up, Sport .)

            • Posted By: mdteacher @ 09/04/2008 4:58:34 PM

By the way, when I "spoke badly" of Sarah Palin, it wasn't as a mother or a woman, it was as MY potential VP. Stick to the issues or risk seeming like the crackpot that you apparently are.

            • Posted By: mdteacher @ 09/04/2008 4:56:54 PM

Guess what - I don't need to justify my action to you - some anonymous commentator. And I don't need to justify my actions to you because I'm an American woman who has the right to choose. I noticed that you didn't pretend to tackle the thorny issues that I actually addressed in my post. I am afraid for a country in which individuals like substitute provacative, knee-jerk reactions for thoughtful response. I hope that you never have to face the reality that I did. Good luck with your world view.

    • Posted By: mdteacher @ 09/04/2008 2:56:35 PM

yikes. You're going to chastise a 7 year old for speaking to her father's image on a screen. yikes.

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 09/04/2008 2:36:32 PM

Mr. Obama's kids are not welcome? That was awful of you. Typical Rep.

  • Posted By: stacy7 @ 09/04/2008 5:58:11 PM

I've been scouring about her children, too. Frankly, it was the 6 year old spit hair do that did me in, I found it so endearing - it made me think of my 7 year old and my 14 month old. I don't agree that little Trig was there just because of votes - this is the biggest moment that has ever happened in Palin's career - perhaps she wanted him to be there to share it with her. He won't remember it, but God willing, one day he'll see the newsclips of himself and know how important he is to her. The cynic in me says, had she not brought him with her - the critics would accuse her of being ashamed and hiding him...

And, they have my vote - unless they completely blow their own legs off... and that is still possible... (thinking back to past prez races)

  • Posted By: a_proud_prolifer @ 09/04/2008 3:49:28 PM

Seriously? You seriously think that people will vote for McCain because of "poor little Trig"? You should be ashamed of yourself for such narrow-minded and shallow writing Susannah. If the child was NOT present at the speech, people would have jumped at the chance to say she is ashamed of her "disabled" child. Her child was not a "choice" or a manipulative voting tool but a life entrusted to her care; a value she proudly lives.

    • Posted By: ccr123@comcast.net @ 09/04/2008 4:41:08 PM

Thank you for bringing common sense into this. I read this article with horror that anyone would look at that child or any child for that matter with such sick cynicism. You people who write for Newsweek have really fallen to an all-time low. Susannah stay on a permanent leave. Working mothers like me don't need your kind of journalism that tears women and children down. So much for the left being a champion of women. You people are really showing your true colors....SEXISTS!

      • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 09/04/2008 5:50:41 PM

The primaries proved that to be 100% accurate

  • Posted By: lisas @ 09/04/2008 5:43:11 PM

I don,t think that the 2nd highest office in the land is the spot to try out family values issues. Bring a 4 month old child- special needs or not to an event at 10 p.m. shows poor judgement. This poor judgement is mirror in the willingness to sacrifice a teenager's privacy and future on the altar of political ambition. If Palin is willing and capable of making such poor choices for her children, just think about the choices that she may make for the country.

Ms. Palin might be flip-flopping about which Energy Plan she supported also. It seems she picked Mr. Obama's. That's pretty good for someone who said he didn't have a plan:

It was painful to watch the little child being exhibited for the benefit of cynical adults, just as it was painful to watch the shy fiance soon-to-be husband play his part in the choreography. That's for McCain. What about the Obama camp? Sacha and Malia were awfully late in bed on at least two conventions nights. You bet they were part of the show, perhaps everybody wanting them to steal the show (which they did at some point). Are we comparing apples to apples here? I will let you answer this one.

  • Posted By: busby @ 09/04/2008 3:39:55 PM

You are a cynic and you are also every bil as sickening and vicious as the rest of the bloggers who chimed in on this matter. Maybe they need a reality check when they have kids and when they and you walk in someone else's shoes perhaps the lot of you will even turn into human beings.

    • Posted By: ccr123@comcast.net @ 09/04/2008 5:11:49 PM

Mmmm. Why aren't you just as aggresively pursuing the John Edwards "love child" story? The above is so ridiculous but its interesting how the left and the media ignored the story of Edwards affair and the fact that he has had a baby with his mistress. This was happening while he was actitvely running for President. Guess thats just his private business, but Sarah being a woman and "God forbid" a republican is fair game? Nice try. You're desperate.

    • Posted By: ccr123@comcast.net @ 09/04/2008 4:44:49 PM

I've got two words for you: "So what". You really think you're going to bring this woman down with your disgusting lies. Don't you know that you are helping the McCain/Palin ticket by showing Americans how vicious the left is and how you'll stoop to any level to win. Is this the new polictics that Obama is talking about? He can try all he wants to stay above this, but his base is "base" and low and will ultimately bring him down

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 09/04/2008 4:14:17 PM

Couldn't happen. They would gladly murder the child before birth.
