I am discusted about the double standard applied again with such obviousness. Bill said "I did not have sex with that woman." ... but because he is WHITE, he did not loose his job or pension or freedom.... Things happen.. Kilpatrick is an OK guy.. Move ON. This is 21st cen America. Adults too. and just when did whitie get to impose his one way morality on people of color and not himself ???? This is the change Obama wants to make and... This election is most deffinitely about RACE.. the Race is in the Race

Clinton WAS impeached. The Congress of the United States didn't have the votes to convict, though. (Thanks, Democrats!) Read your history books.

I guess you forgot that a whitie gave birth to Barack Obama.

Perhaps you forget that Clinton was IMPEACHED.

Just remember, Obama is part white too as well as part black.

The point is that Michigan voters may backlash against Obama for supporting this disgraced Detroit mayor, fairly or unfairly. It is good to see Newsweek finally doing a story that actually analyzes an issue without bloviating over Obama. Of course, this is a "Web Exclusive" so we won't see it in the magazine.

  • Posted By: forte88 @ 09/05/2008 12:20:00 PM

ok.. so the 20 old white guys that live in Detroit will now vote for McCain. This won't change the election. Racists who see stereotypes wouldn't vote for Obama to begin with. This won't change the election. Detroit is no stranger to corruption or scandal. This is business as usual. GO BUCKEYES!

  • Posted By: wildlifeusa @ 09/05/2008 12:19:52 PM

YOUR QUESTIONG IS RACIST!! WHAT DOES OBAMA HAS TO DO WITH THE MESS IN DETROIT? NOTHING!!! IF THE MAIRE HAD BEEN WHITE, THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ASKED!!

  • Posted By: Yes! We ALL Can @ 09/05/2008 12:17:09 PM

I agree Mr. Ace. Keith - why don't you go do some stories on Palin so we can find out who she is. I hear the McCain campaign won't allow her to do any interview over the next 60 days! Are you kidding me? Do they not want her to insert foot into mouth by revealing more scandals about her?

This story is abosolutely ludicrous! Obama suggested to Kilpatrick to step down so that the city of Detroit could go on with its buisiness!! Don't try and tell us that this hurts Obama. This only hurts Kwame!!!

Do better with your journalistic stories!!!!

  • Posted By: jerseygal @ 09/05/2008 12:16:01 PM

Newsweek is missing the mark here. Attending a political event and complimenting your host is what is expected. Who knew how Kilpatrick was conducting his private life then? No one did. This is piece not worthy of the time it took to write it. Would you link Jack Abramoff, Scooter Libby, or Brownie to the leaders of the Republican Party today because they were at some common political functions? What about McCain and the Keating FIve? There is some proof there of bad judgement. Also, if you want to talk family values -- what about all of the extramartial affairs McCain "admits" to? It is sickening that it has been swept under the rug. How about Sarah Palin and her kids sitting through (without objections) Christian evangelism sermons by the leader of Jews for Jesus? All of these actions smack of hipocracy by the Republicans. I smell a "Rove"!

comparing Palin's daugher getting pregnant to 10 felony charges by a public official, who fired people to hide an affair and had the city pay 82 million of the taxpayers money to cover it it up might just be stretching it a little bit. oh and he also assaulted a police officer.

    • Posted By: NEW GENERATION @ 09/05/2008 10:28:40 AM

My ultimate point is Kwame is an adult. He is responsible for whatever criminal actions or choices he made. NOT Obama. The media is stretching it a bit by trying to pull Obama down because Kilpatrick committed 10 felonies. I guarantee you if Kwame was a white politician we would not be having this conversation. This is all to try and paint an image of the black male in key roles in society. Judge each man for his own actions. John McCain is no SAINT, he has some gangstas he's associate with but they don't just carry guns.

Perhaps someone needs to post McCain with the other participants in the Keating 5 scandal...nah...just keep looping that clip of he and bush embracing.

United States of America v. I. Lewis Libby, also known as "Scooter Libby" (USA v. LIBBY, Case No. 1:2005-cr-00394-RBW) is the federal trial of former high-ranking George W. Bush administration official I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. Libby served as assistant to President George W. Bush, chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, and assistant to the Vice President for national security affairs from 2001???2005. Libby resigned from his government positions hours after his indictment on October 28, 2005.

Libby was indicted by a federal grand jury on five felony counts of making false statements to federal investigators, perjury for lying to a federal grand jury, and obstruction of justice for impeding the course of a federal grand jury investigation concerned with the possibly-illegal leaking by government officials of the classified identity of a covert agent of the CIA, Valerie E. Wilson (also known as "Valerie Plame"), the wife of former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV. Pursuant to the grand jury leak investigation, Libby was convicted on March 6, 2007, on four counts of perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements, and he was acquitted of one count of making false statements. He was sentenced to thirty months in prison and fined $250,000. The sentence was commuted in June 2007 by President Bush, voiding the prison term. The convictions still stand on the record.

Keith Naughton, the author of this article, is crazy if he thinks the Kwame debacle will hurt Obama. Obama threw Kwame to the wolves long ago; even telling him not to show up at the DNC. What more could he have down? Kwame was Michigan's trash to dispose of, not Obama's. Using an Al Sharpton wannabe racist hate monger dimbulb like Adolph Mongo to support his absurd thesis is comical. Mongo is a local, barely known irrelevant laughingstock. I have to give full disclosure though; I am a little horrified that I agree with one of Mongo's statements (for the first time ever) about Obama piling on at the last minute. This is actually true. I believe it was the day before inmate Kwame resigned, when it was more than obvious that the coward mayor had no more than 2 days remaining, that Obama said he should step down. That was extremely lame! Roger Penske did the same damn thing last week. The interim mayor, Ken Cockrel Jr., will do just fine at getting people to come out and vote. It's another absurd notion put forth by an author who drew a conclusion first, then fished for non-existent evidence. Adolph Mongo - haaaaaaaa!

I'm assuming McCain was served as well, because he was not born in America and there is a real question regarding whether he can legally run for President. How stupid can you get, there are a million frivilous law suits out there, a dime a dozen....trying to dislodge our candidates. Use your money more wisely.

      • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 09/05/2008 10:54:53 AM

McCain's issue with Panama was put to rest...in 2000. Frivilous??? Judge did not see it that way. Berg is former Pennsylvania Deputy Attn. General.

We will see how it plays out. Seperate analysts have declared his C.O.L.B. a forgery. If so...he is in deep doo-doo.

        NOBAMA!!!

        • Posted By: raddave @ 09/05/2008 12:06:10 PM

Berg is also a man that filed a RICO lawsuit against George Bush, charging him with causing 9/11 to happen. He is a WHACKO!

What's kind of asinine assumption is is this? What about the real issues?? 6.1% unemployment, Home loans unavailable to a majority of lower middle class people with steady jobs and average credit. Two black males are of one mind, right? Politicians support other politicians. It's as if blacks don't get corruption. do Alaskans get it? Ted just won again! Does Sarah have something to answer for? So we can look forward to Ted Stevens and Charles Keating as article subjects we can look forward to?? Come on Newsweek your conservative skirt is showing!

  • Posted By: goeast12 @ 09/05/2008 12:01:58 PM

I'm really disappointed in Newsweek for running this article. Obama gave a speech in Detroit and he called the mayor "my good friend". That's the normal procedure when politicians of the same party get together and give speeches. This happened at a time when nobody knew the mayor of Detroit was up to no good. There's not a single reason for this to be newsworthy unless Newsweek thinks that all black politicians are guilty by association of race. They wouldn't write the same type of article about John Mccain if a white republican politician he had met with later was found out to have done something wrong or illegal. That's the problem. This is a really stupid article that shouldn't have been written because it puts this nonsense association into people's heads. Shame on Newsweek.

A American hero who came home and dumped his wife who waited faithfully for his return.

  • Posted By: nleath @ 09/05/2008 11:57:51 AM

They are both Black men, but that's where it ends. There is no comparing Kilpatrick and Obama. Kilpatrick 's mistakes are his and his alone. Barack Obama is a highly principled man, with strong family values, a great father to his children and does not cheat on his wife. If you must compare Kilpatrick with someone try B. Clinton - both have low moral character.

While living in Detroit (which I loved), I had a black man stop to help me with a flat tire. While talking, it was apparent that he was not from Detroit. We were a white woman and black man talking normally, not walking on eggshells around each other as is norm for Detroiters. So I asked him where he was from. St. Paul. This "racial tension" in Detroit is real because they can't move beyond the racial tensions of the 60's. They need the leadership of people like Obama to move forward. And I find it hard to believe that there aren't a few thousand of them in Detroit. I met that black talent while I was living there. Why are they not floating to the top of the black community? And I came to NOT trust Kirkpatrick for that reason; he's a power machine, not a community motivator. To the black community in Detroit: You definitely have the potential --now unleash it!!!

Can we stop with the double standard already? Lets not forget that people with much worse deeds to their name fully embrace and are embraced in return by John McCain. Its just that they have the executive branch of the federal government to hide behind.

  • Posted By: ike2000 @ 09/05/2008 11:56:42 AM

You have excused Sarah Palin from responsibility over her teenage daughter's pregnancy, now you want roping-in Obama for the failure of an old friend. This smacks clearly at hypocrisy! If Rev. Wrights teenage daughter was pregnant, I believe the media would have gone agog in blaming Obama. I'm beginning to believe that the constitution does not include the black man, because of Americas propensity at double standards. We can elect a stripper as vice president, but noooooo, to the most qualified black. It's time Obama realizes it is too late to convince those Appalachian rednecks, and return to the streets to turn-out the votes. The Appalachian will despite him in the final seconds, I know this for sure. Get out all the homeless people and the disgruntled majority -- these will guarantee him the election.
