Why does this reporter who wrote this article not do the due diligence to do some checking about Sarah Palin's record... if she had not written this article with zero fact checking, she would have found that, as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin cut funding for special needs children by 62%....

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/06/2008 9:24:11 AM

You're exactly right. The reporter did not do any checking. Had they done so, they would have found that she did not cut funding by 62% for special needs children, she ulitimately raised it by 175%.

Pallisor, ain't it amazing how low the Obamabots will go? I mean, spamming a comment forum is pretty desperate.....

I support Obama, but my support of my child comes FIRST AND FOREMOST! Anyone who presents a detailed plan and has the votes to back up support for prior similar causes has my vote. It is ridiculaous to think that just b/c she has a DS child, she would support programs and legislation we need. She has the healthcare and benefits to care for her child regardless, so I do not assume that she would automatically care. I mean, she is a woman, and doesn't support too much of anything that would actually support women. Why would I believe it would be any different in this case? I have searched McCain's site for a specific plan for helping people and especially kids with disabilities and I found no such plan. Barack's was quite easy to find and is VERY detailed. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/disabilities/

check it out. BTW, I am a mother to an autistic son and sister to both a brother and sister who are mentally challenged. And I support Barack Obama!

Before you support Obama please inform your self as to his position against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act.
Show me a person who would deny and infant born alive medical care and I'll show you a person who will NEVER care a rat's a$$ for a child with disabilities. That's Obama in both cases! Because neither votes!
I am a nurse and a mother of a child with autism. I will NEVER fote for Obama.

silentreader, I don't believe anything either in the MSM. My niece means the world to me. Palin has raised the amounts for disabled kids while in office.

            http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2008/04/30/35recaps.h27.html

Detailed plans are nice on a website, but they are just plans. Obama hasn't sponsored any legislation to help disabled kids or adults. Nothing.

And also Pallisor - puh-leeeze give us some proof other than quoting the Weekly Standard again and again. She's basically said kids with disabilities can go to public schools, she just won't pay for supplemental services to help them learn.

Why in the world do magazines/internet sites like Newsweek continue to print all these glowing things about Palin when even a little research shows her record is FAR from being supportive of special needs programs. I also find it interesting that she has apposed at every turn all sex education except for abstinence and now has a unwed teenage daughter who's now engaged to a self-proclaimed foulmouthed redneck (according to his personal profile on line-since her nomination removed). While all of this has been praised by the conservative groups, I can only imagine whate the media and conservative response would have been if all of this was coming from one of the family members on the Dem. side.

Governor Palin voted AGAINST programs for Special Needs Children.

She also voted AGAINST programs for Single Moms.

Why are so many things swept under the carpet ?

Global Warming: Governor Palin is unsure whether Global Warming is man-made.

She said she does not believe in that, "that stuffy old Evolution thing", either.

If elected, how would her viewpoint help improve our Education issues on any level?

This demonstrates her own lack of education folks. It is a problem for the future of America.

    Wake up folks.

Palin has cut funding for special needs kids in Alaska. She is parading around her Down Syndrome son with pledges to parents and advocates of the disabled. Her kid is only a few month old. She has no idea what is ahead for her family and Trig. There will come a day when Trig's needs cannot be met because of the lack of funding (at her hands). I can't trust her to make sure my Down Syndrome daughter gets the services she needs. Parents and advocates of special needs kids have had to fight for anything that is gained in the way of help for these kids. From what I have read Palin hasn't been much help to parents in Alaska. I would hate to see what she wants to do for us on a national level - no thanks!

That was absolutely a disgusting display of pandering and waving a disabled child around for votes. I certainly hope that those who actually do have special needs humans at heart could see right through that as I did. I would think they'd be very offended as well as outraged.

I saw a family with a lot of love between all members of the family.
If that is "pandering" then we need more "pandering" in families.
I did not see it as pandering at all.

In response to someone's outlandish and false claim that Obama would leave a child to die unmedicated:

In connection with this accusation last week, Senator Obama's response was aired on TV. He said the idea that he would recommend leaving a newborn (or anyone) to die without medication under any circumstances is" ridiculous".

We all know that with birthing there can be extenuating circumstances. In rare cases, Mother may die while birthing or following the birth. Perhaps she will choose her own death while birthing if she's very ill, and let baby live. Perhaps doctors will recommend otherwise. I don't know and you don't know because we aren't there. These are personal decisions, or there may be no choice when it actually happens.

If it is true that hospitals are not taking care of dying newborns while Mum is unconscious or otherwise, whose fault is it?

In any case, it is facile to demonise or ascribe blame to any one of our presidential candidates. Senator Obama is one of the most compassionate public figures we know, and he has demonstrated this quality indisputably in a long career of working with those in need.

Spreading this kind of thing is deeply wrong.

Thank you for providing this clip! It pretty clearly states part of Obama's position on this. This clip unfortunately doesn't include Obama's statement that to require an abortionist to make a phone call to another doctor to get care for a born Alive infant is "TOO BURDENSOME" for the abortionist! BTW Carvel was not up to speed on this topic so I would suggest you discount his statements. I would like to have someone provide more info also on the statement at the very end that Rev Wright is on the board of this hospital... Also Jill Staneck's web site is very informative on her testimony on this very important topic.

    Fact-checking Palin: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/04/politics/animal/main4414049.shtml?source=mostpop_story
Palin: "To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters. I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House."

Sarah Palin might have changed her mind on this one recently. However, a comment here notes that Palin actually slashed funding for schools for special needs kids by 62%. Budgets: FY 2007 (pre-Palin), 2008, 2009 (all pdfs).

          I wonder which it is?

first of all...anyone with a username of Pallisor can't be too objective...but if you want the real facts you can google Alaska state budgets for those years and see line items where she reduced funding by 300,000 the first year and an addition 300,000 the second year for a total cut of 600,000 in two years. I think you are simply a Pallin troll looking to confuse people on these boards with misinformation.

Quoting from a blog in the Weekly Standard (not exactly a reliable source) is probably not a good idea. Equally biased is dKos, but this article is better than the one you cite: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/4/144547/5612
The Education Week article it cites is the original reference, but you left out the final quote:
Bill Bjork, the president of the Alaska state affiliate of the National Education Association, said that he was pleased with those changes, but that the plan, and the increase in per-pupil spending, ???doesn???t do enough, soon enough,??? particularly given the state???s strong oil revenues.

I have a son with Fragile X Syndrome. He is now 25, but boy has it been a long, hard haul. I had to do most of it by myself. I didn't have family members or collegues wives (e.g. Cindy McCain) to hold my son when I had other things that I needed to do. I am not complaining - he is my son and I love him dearly. I took steps to insure that I would not have another pregnancy once I found out I was a carrier of this genetic defect and had a 50% chance of passing it on, but accidents happen. . . .On top of the personal cost, my son's therapies and education have cost untold thousands of dollars. Thank You to the taxpayers who have shouldered these costs. My vote will go to the candidates who a) will let me and others like me make the hard choices, instead of making them for us, and b) who have a track record of putting their money where their mouth is and actually voting for legislation that will improve the quality of life for those like my son - instead of leaving them to fall through the cracks of society.

Why do sites like Newsweek continue to write only these types of stories without showing the other side (reality)...she has NOT supported special needs rights, which even cursory research would show. It also puzzles me why the media and conservative base are so enthralled with her unwed, pregant daughter who is now that Palin has been nominated will be marrying her boyfriend. Imagine if the Dem candidate had such a situation...the media and conservative base would be all over them with hate filled stuff. Yet these guys are being held up as such an ideal family. Frankly if Palin hadn't fought comprehensive sex education her daughter might not be where she is now. Just boggles the mind of rational people.

Two minutes of googling, and I found this. If she hates special needs children, why is she increasing the funding for them?

If anyone bothered to do their research they would find that Governor Palin cut the funding in the Alaska State Budget for people with disabilities from $8 million to $3 million. Shouldn't that record tell you enough to realize that, like John McCain, she will say anything to get elected.

Uh, not so. Current spending per child in special needs in Alaska will go up to a little over 73k per year in fiscal 2011 from $26k in fiscal 2007. Doesn't look like a cut to me or to Education Week, either (unless you think they are a disreputable wingnut rag for some reason?)

Any child with downs needs therapy, especially within the first years of their lives. Because of the physical limitations such as short stubby fingers which makes fine motor activities difficult and cognitive delays they will need occupational therapy in order to become more independent in their growing lives. Early intervention is key. It worries me that for Trigs first years his mom might be so pre occupied with helping to run a country or even god forbid RUN the country that he wont receive the full attention he deserves! I think her priorities may be backwards at this point in both her and his life.

You're absolutely right about therapy....which is why Todd Palin is a full-time dad for Trig. Or do you think he can't do the job because he doesn't have a uterus?

And then, there's the inevitable silence.

        Dead on....
