I cant believe people can make such false statements and not be called out on it. She didnt cut anything in Alaska, she actually created a separate program that is obviously in a different category. She didnt cut anything, she just moved some of that money to a different location in the budget!!!! Please go check it out before spewing lies.

    • Posted By: swe123 @ 09/06/2008 10:09:06 AM

What a joke! Try googling Alaska Youth Challenge Academy which is where the money was moved too...it's a military training camp for 16-18 year old disbled children!!!!

This is not special education!!! Totally disgusted by the misleading information posted on this board!!

      • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/06/2008 12:50:22 PM

Misleading? Right. The only link you've provided to support your claim went straight to 404.

Before you rush to decide that Palin cut funds in Alaska--I'd wait to see her address it directly. She has a
80%+ approval ratin in Alaska for some reason---if people were screwed over there it would show in her %'s

    • Posted By: dcwblackhorse @ 09/06/2008 12:42:16 PM

From what I've been reading lately her current ratings are not nearly so high and she replaced an EXTREMELY unpopular gov.

I would suggest to everyone reading each Candidates's plan for Americans with disabilities. I havee posted a link to Barack's plan here. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/disabilities/
I also tried to post a link for McCain's plan, but I could not find any plan on his website under "Issues." There is a statement from a disabled American, but I did not see a plan. I have a autistic son, and a brother and sister who are level 5 mentally challenged so trust me, this is a HUGE issue for me. Having a child with DS does not an advocate make. Please do your research!

If my passion for these kids seem a bit "much", please understand I do relate to all you parents who have children with what I like to really say is "Learning Difficulties". Every child is "special" and that is why it is so important that, all of us, especially those with "special needs" kids, really do see what is happening in our country. Everything for the past eight years seems to be "my way, or the highway" syndrome. This is why Americans feel like their Government is no longer working for them, but, Americans have to "fight" our Government to do the "right" thing for all Americans. Only God knows the tears we have cried over our children..and He knows our hearts...many of our kids have had a really hard time just being accepted by their peers and other kids that don't have these issues...so when you see our Government not really accepting these kids for who they are and giving them a "hand up", it cuts deep...other than this issue, I have seen too many other people in America have to "fight" our own government to do what is right and honorable..it gets old, we need a real change...a change that is not "covered up" by the same "words" of eight years ago..maybe I am more mad at myself for hearing the words "No Child Left Behind" and "Jesus" so I voted being totally naive, before really checking it out...nevertheless...May God Bless All these Great Kids that deserve to be treated fairly and justly no matter what party the parents are voting for...

Palin is no friend of families of special needs kids. While governor she cut funding for special needs kids by 62%!!!! That's no advocate. Goggle Palin and special needs funding and see for yourself.

You're mis informed. Govenor Palin actually increased the budget by 175%.

    People are good to be skeptical. When elections are tight many things are said, sometimes even with good intention, that are never see the light of day. It doesn't seem reasonable to say, She knows the special needs, she's a mother of a special needs child;

    1. The baby is only 4 months old, she doesn't have any idea yet.
    2. She's campaigning for Vice President of the US, check her schedule, she's not going to have a lot of time to learn her child's needs over the next few months.
    3. If she is elected, someone else will be doing the majority of meeting the child's needs.

While I fully support anyone who wants to be in politics, it would seem to me that someone who was REALLY concerned with the special needs of their children would pass on the overwhelming opportunity of the potential vice presidency, and potentially the president of the United States.

    • Posted By: ihateeveryoneincludingyou @ 09/06/2008 9:59:48 AM

shultis, Trig's father is staying at home to take care of him. Surely you aren't so backwards as to believe a man can't care for a child as well as a woman can, even one with special needs?

      • Posted By: Aurexa @ 09/06/2008 11:33:19 AM

Did it ever occur to you that now that she is a parent of a special needs child that she could affect some real change in our federal government and how it actually helps our children? Yes, at 4 months old, she may not yet see the full affects like some of us now know, but she will know and I am hoping that becoming a mother of a child with special needs has somehow led her to truly understand and make a difference.

A diploma does not garantee a job if you do not have the abilities and skills that warrant a diploma. We should concentrate and teach these children skills beyond "Do you want that super sized?" They can and will be very productive in important jobs with the correct attention.

    • Posted By: MADMOMINTENNESSEE @ 09/06/2008 11:08:08 AM

Absolutely, that is why, I CHOSE TO STAY HOME WITH MY SPECIAL NEEDS DAUGHTER, unlike Sarah Palin, who is busy out on the campaign trail and NOT home with her children. Why do you think I am so "furious". I DID give my daughter every opportunity I could to help her "be the best she can be"...,and the Republican party DID NOT CONSIDER HER 3.043 GPA FOR HER FOUR YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEING AN HONOR ROLL STUDENT HER ENTIRE SENIOR YEAR WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THEM FOR HER TO TRY AND LEARN MORE IN COLLEGE....apparently, you do not know much about how Learning Difficulties such as CAPD, severe expressive and receptive language delays, dyslexia, etc. are PHYSICAL impairments not intelligent impairments...but, because these students have difficulties on taking tests...they get discarded...being denied the RIGHT TO FURTHER YOUR EDUCATION by "1" point on "1" test after 13 years of hard work and challenges...please..how arrogant and elitist is this..your darn right these kids can learn more, IF THE REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS WILL GIVE THEN THE CHANCE....

She cut funding in Alaska for special needs children from 7 million to 3 million. Sounds like someone who really cares.

  • Posted By: SoCal Mama @ 09/05/2008 9:15:46 PM

I am the mother of a special needs child who is mainstreamed at school. I have seen the mistrust that results between parents and the schools when administrators have to try to slice up too-small portions of an inadequate pie to try to help all the special needs children in the school. Despite her words, I have a very hard time believing that Sarah Palin will do anything to increase funding to meet those needs, especially if she's failed to provide funding to address those needs in her own state. It's only common sense that you can't shrink government and cut taxes and still have the money to pay for programs that have never been fully funded.

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/05/2008 9:37:09 PM

      Rest assured, she didn't.

      • Posted By: SoCal Mama @ 09/06/2008 12:51:01 AM

I actually have done more looking into this now, and it's good for Alaska that she managed to increase per pupil funding by $100 and increase the special education budget. Considering that at the same time she gave each citizen of Alaska $1,200, though, it hardly seems earthshaking. Alaska is a sparsely populated state flush with windfall oil taxes, unlike our country, which is deep in debt. I remain skeptical that she will produce any real change for us, and we'll be stuck between underfunded public agencies and private health insurers who will do anything they can to shift responsibility for helping our children away from themselves onto the overburdened public system.

        • Posted By: swe123 @ 09/06/2008 10:04:29 AM

I work in public school special education, $100 per child will buy 2 more physical therapy sessions a YEAR
the truth is that our special education funding has been cut by thousands every year by the republicans now in office..and mccain and pallin are just two more republicans...same old

          • Posted By: SoCal Mama @ 09/06/2008 10:24:16 AM

Don't know if you'll see this, but I'd like to say thank you for the work you do. My son has benefited enormously from the efforts of public school speech therapists, physical therapists, and paraprofessionals, and we know from first hand experience how shrinking budgets have put those dedicated people in the awful position of making choice based on what they can afford to do, not what constitutes best practices for the children in their care. So again, thank you; politicians may talk, but people like you are the ones who deliver for our kids.

  • Posted By: jojotwins @ 09/06/2008 10:20:02 AM

Come on! All you'd have to do is check her budgets, which are public knowledge. Her first year as Gov she slashed the Alasaka School District supplemental services for kids with special needs by 62 percent!!!!

    • Posted By: swe123 @ 09/06/2008 10:45:10 AM

Even worse she moved the money to Alaska Youth Challenge Program...very scary! A military training camp for disabled teenagers. Try googling is...I was disgusted.

  • Posted By: MADMOMINTENNESSEE @ 09/06/2008 10:33:26 AM

Just one more thing...The Democratic Party are the ones who helped push Senate Bill 1015 May 2005 through...unfortunately, Gary Nixon, the Executive Director of the TN State Board of Education and the rest of the Board Members ALL support the NCLB and President Bush...They refuse to create an appeals process for these kids to get their diploma even though it was voted on and passed Legislation...I was told by Gary Nixon, Tennessee State Board of Education I needed to read a book called "The World is Flat"...CEO Globalization concerns and "greed" that sends jobs overseas and don't want the kids who may not be able to become "math scholars" and "scientists" to put money in their pockets...Crockett in TN voting for Obama

SARAH PALIN CLAIMS THAT SHE SUPPORTS SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN. TRUTH: SHE LINE ITEM VETOED AN INCREASE IN FUNDING FOR SPEICAL NEEDS CHILDREN FROM HER OWN STATE'S BUDGET. WHAT WHAT SHE DOES, NOT WHAT SHE SAYS.

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/05/2008 9:56:37 PM

      Wrong. Again.

Like CNN, you want to put out only the part of the story that serves to harm her. She increased the budget by 175%, not decreased it by 62%.

As the father of a 5 year old who has down syndrome who made the same choice as Palin did, I can tell you that her pledge to be an advoicate did pull at the heartstrings. At the same time however, actions speak louder than words and the actions and pronouncements by the McCain ticket with regard to health care and education don't show any indication of advancing the cause of people with learning disabilities at all.

While my wife and I have faith in the public school system and fully support integration, we also realize that it's us who ultimately have to do the heavy lifting with regard to the education of our son. Gifted programs deal with "abilities". Rather than spending so much time focusing on what a child can't do it's important that society spend a little time trying to enhance the "abilities" of those who have challenges.

Every year we produce a video for our son's educators which gives them some idea of where he is at in his development. You can view this year's video at:

      sjredmond,

I think you'll get the support from Palin that you need. She stepped up in Alaska on the state level:

      http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/09/newest_palin_smear_she_cut_spe.asp

There's no reason to believe she won't do the same on a national level.

I wish you and your family well.

If Donna Martinez believes that Palin will keep her promise to help children with disabilities, she???s living in La-La Land
    Let???s get real.
We are $ 9 trillion in debt. We are planning to go to war with Iran, Syria and Georgia. Rigid conservatives like Sarah Palin oppose all forms of taxation and John McCain has pledged to make all tax cuts permanent. The only public expenditures rigid conservatives like Sarah Palin will support are police, war, and prisons. Granted, McCain will give an extra exemption for children, but Donna Martinez??? 22 year old ???child:??? won???t qualify.
In addition, the Republican platform is opposed to all forms of stem cell research, even though this research might produce treatments that would alleviate some sorts of disabilities. Palin is opposed to all abortions as well as the Plan B morning-after pill. John McCain has promised to appoint only anti-abortion judges, who not only will ban all forms of abortions, but all forms of stem cell research.

Furthermore, when McCain pledges to banish lobbyists and special interest groups from Wasington, he???s not talking about lobbyists for the rich and powerful. They???re funding his campaign. He???s talking about special interest groups for the poor, the elderly, and young - including special interest groups that advocate for disabled children
All of child disability advocates need to wake up and smell the coffee. They can expect no government aid from the Republicans. If they want government aid, they???d better vote a straight Democratic ticket and do everything they can to ensure a landslide Democratic victory.
Otherwise, it simply ???ain???t gonna happen.???

We don't need more money for IDEA --- the public school districts are spending that money on private attorneys to battle the needs and rights of children with disabilities.

We need vouchers. Read more here:

that generalization is totally unfair...I work in special education and every year we have to service more children with less money thanks to the republicans. I've never been involved in a law suit because my parents know I will do everything I possibly can for their kids...they also fully realize how difficult this is becoming. my special ed. funds from the federal government have been cut every year!

  • Posted By: PleaseSaveAmerica @ 09/05/2008 10:34:46 PM

I honestly don't care about the economic, foreign policy, etc. policies that Palin may or may not have passed or known about. If McCain/Palin were to get elected, they at least have Congress to check them in those areas.

My sole biggest worry as an independent voter is the Supreme Court. I can guarantee you that if retirements or deaths happened to current Supreme Court members, McCain/Palin would nominate the most conservative judges in history to the bench -- which would, in turn, start stripping current social rights away. I lean on the side of freedom of social rights (e.g., gay marriage) because those things are private issues. I hate for the government to get involved. Had McCain not picked such an extremely socially conservative person, I would not be as concerned.

    • Posted By: ihateeveryoneincludingyou @ 09/06/2008 10:05:08 AM

Yeah, because the Democrat-controlled congress is just going to let them do anything they want, right?

  • Posted By: Alaskamom @ 09/05/2008 11:52:33 PM

If she is going to be an advocate for special needs children, why didn't she announce she was pregnant with a special needs child when she announced her pregancy at 7 months? Also why take the chance of flying from Texas to Alask when your contractions had started when you were a high risk mother carrying a special needs child who now is being born premature? Does any of this make sense? And what kind of judgement does she have?

    • Posted By: ihateeveryoneincludingyou @ 09/06/2008 10:02:17 AM

Did you ever think that maybe she and her family wanted to come to terms with the diagnosis before it became plastered all over the news? Or maybe that she, like other mothers who get that diagnosis, was hoping against hope that the test results were wrong?

  • Posted By: calico @ 09/05/2008 8:54:04 PM

Republicans were only "advocates" for unqualified Affirmative Action Candidates with unwed pregnant teenage daughters until they recruited Queen Palin and her disfunctional family. They have been arrogant condescending and holier than thou until THEY DECIDED to SHOWCASE one of their OWN. They have been dismissive and divisive for ALL OTHER NON- WHITE sections of our nation's population and NOW THEY EXPECT the world to KISS UP and WALLOW over their "NEW STAR". WHAT A JOKE!

    • Posted By: Pallisor @ 09/06/2008 9:51:40 AM

Quote: "and NOW THEY EXPECT the world to KISS UP and WALLOW over their "NEW STAR". WHAT A JOKE!"

Funny... that sounds exactly like what the democrats has wanted all along with Obama.

It's painful how true this is. The daily show has some great comparisons (Sep 3 episode, clips at thedailyshow.com) of what they said and what they're saying now. Although, to be fair, it's true of most politicians. although rarely this obvious.
