Amen to the article above. I have always voted Republican, yet I am now embarrassed by and angry with the whole lot of them. I can't believe McCain's choice. He thinks that Sarah is perfect for the job. He has shown his true character in choosing a woman who might be a baracuda, but she's certainly no lady. I wish Hillary was still on the ticket - she'd certainly get my vote.

Oh PLEASE!! Spare Me Patti. Snarkiness, give me a break you hack. This woman has guts, poise and character, something you obviously didn't get from the great family you came from, if you are the Patti Davis I am thinking of. The Reagan Patti Davis who appeared in Playboy. Yeah you are a role model for American women. Keep it up, Keep it up, I'm loving in, we all are. Dig dig dig yourselves in a little deeper. I Love it!!!

Bernie12345: Guts, poise, character? I can think of a lot more women who have guts, poise, and character, and don't have to be a "good ole (tom) boy" to prove it. I am the mother of two daughters and I shudder to think that Ms. Palin could be second in line to run this country. Role models? I think you, if you are a gentleman, owe Ms. Davis an apology. Being published in playboy is no more harmful than picking it up and "reading" it. My girls learned more about grace, guts, poise, and character from watching and listening to Hillary Clinton the months she was campaigning for President than Ms. Palin has in her little finger...or her trigger finger...take your pick.

      • Posted By: jonton127 @ 09/07/2008 6:15:15 PM

The only thing that your daughters are going to learn from Hillary Clinton in being a role model is how to roll over and play dead when your husband cheats on you and the whole world finds out and you become a laughing stock for staying with the loser. She would have a lot more respect from the real women of this world if she would divorce his cheating butt and cut her loses. She can no longer "stay together for the sake of her daughter." She should teach her daughter AND yours how to deal with a cheating lying sack of shat like him. You talk about a set back for women's rights! He walked all over Jennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, Hillary and EVERY other woman that he DID have sexual relations with. He mocked family values and rubbed her face in it to boot. And she just sat back and took it like some dutiful Stepford wife. Who wants that as a President?

You are quite entitled to your opinion, but do not dare underestimate or speak for the intelligence of my daughters. They know exactly what it is like to see a woman cheated on, abused, and walked all over...who stayed with her husband for many years for various reasons before she got out of the marriage. My daughters have been taught there are much more gray areas in the world than black and white. They have also been taught that one's personal life is exactly that...personal and private. Americans will agree or disagree forever about Bill Clinton's choices. They were his to make and Hillary's to deal with, but it was and should have stayed a private matter. If my girls can hold their head up against the cowards of this country, speak their minds openly and honestly, and they do and they will....then I will be the first one to thank Hillary for making my job a bit easier.

You come across as bitter and angry that your party has stabbed you in the back, first by not allowing Hillary to be the nominee, then by snubbing her by not even considering her to be the vice presidential candidate. " I feel your pain" , but don't take it out on Sarah just because you are pissed off at your party and its choice of Joe Biden. Isn't there a saying that if a woman is strong willed she's a bitch, but if a man does it he has character? Take your bitterness and turn it on to the ones who slapped you in the face, not on the party that had the insight to pick a woman who can lead this nation into the future. You should be proud of her, not try and tear her down just because you are bitter and angry at your own party. Shame on you. And, NO, I will not apologize to Ms. Davis, who chose to pursue the path of exploiting women by making them out to be nothing more than sex objects by appealing to the Prurient Interests of others. She should be apologizing to all women for helping to keep them in second status. I hope you can get over your bitterness.

        • Posted By: bernie12345 @ 09/06/2008 10:36:30 PM

I meant second class status. I'm sure you know what I meant. As far as my pick goes, I'll pick Sarah. ;o)

          • Posted By: tarafff @ 09/06/2008 11:20:23 PM

Not all women are bitter and emotional. Just like not all men are idiots. I have always been on my soap box for womens liberation. I was also a subscriber to Playboy. Why, because I liked the articles. And because it was one of the free choices that I believe every woman should have to do with her own body. If men want to pay us hundreds of thousands of dollars to take a few pictures, go for it girl!!! If that pisses you off, too bad.

            • Posted By: bernie12345 @ 09/07/2008 12:09:18 AM

I went back to re read my comments, I couldn't find where I said all women are "bitter and emotional" I was commenting on what this person was saying about Sarah, and how she came across as pissed off at the fact that her party snubbed her candidate. I have no problem with women posing for pictures for money either. That is capitalism, free market economics. Something your party wants to destroy. But, for the most part, the extreme feminist movement has focused on the exploitation of women by men, and my only point here is that you are hypocrites. You say one thing, as long as it supports your agenda, and when things don't go your way, you turn right around and attack people because they are different from you in their beliefs. You are party loyalists. It's not the issues that matter to you, it's your party loyalty. It's is primarily your fear that you will no longer be able to have an abortion. That is really your biggest concern. You want the freedom to remove a life from your body. Well, let me put your mind at ease on that issue. That issue has been decided, and will never be reversed, ever. It has been in effect for too long, and will never be reversed. Those are scare tactics that the party you are loyal to use to scare you into voting for their ticket. Trust me on this, it will never be over turned. "Move On" If it weren't for that issue you would be celebrating the choice of Sarah Palin, and you all know it.

              • Posted By: got2BU @ 09/07/2008 4:22:07 PM

You know, Bernie...you are right when you say I am pissed off "at my party." I believe I mentioned in one of my posts that I am a registered Republican who will be changing to Independent ASAP. You say we are bitter and resentful because we want to be able to have our abortions. I believe that is every woman's right and a topic for another day, because believe me, you brought up a hot one. Let me just say this: I HAD the option of aborting a child because she was going to be born with a severe brain disease called "hydrocephalus." I chose to have this baby and I have solely cared for her for 19 years. We recently lost our health insurance. Will Medicaid be there for her if McCain/Paolin takes office? Ms. Palin has a disabled child, but is healthcare on her agenda? I have not heard of it if it is. She is adequately insured, I'm sure. Yes, we, who wanted Hillary nominated are saddened, and this forum is attributed to her, hoping she will sound the voice of those of us who often have no voice at all, especially when it comes to health care. She will continue to "speak" regardless of her role in America and our politics. I'd "speak" for myself, but unfortunately, Bernie, you are about the only one who would hear me. G-d Bless us all, regardless of this election's outcome. We are going to need it no matter who is elected.

              • Posted By: Esencia08 @ 09/07/2008 2:26:25 AM

yes this is true because 7 out of 9 supreme court justices have been appointed by republican administrations and Roe vs. Wade is still intact. I perceived the same fear tactics being used against women of the democratic party about women's rights issues so that they would remain loyal despite the betrayal of Hillary Clinton. But really, if democrats retain a majority in congress and can work with the more moderate republicans, they can still get womrn's rights legislation passed. Bill Clinton signed off on the welfare reform bill in a republican dominated senate.

I am not a republican and I am pro-choice, but I really like Sarah Palin and what she represents even if her views are more conservative than mine.

If Hillary is smart, she'll stay away from Obama as will Bill. Nothing either one can say will make me vote for Obama and attacking Palin will ruin her. We don't expect all women to share our beliefs in abortion or birth control and we don't make it a point for running for political office on the Republican ticket. The amount of disrespect shown to women was from the DNC side of the aisle and is still going on. Roll call vote in the hotel? During breakfast? Taking votes from one candidate to give to another in a primary? (Michigan) Oh yeah, the DNC is a private organization without any real rules or regulations. Well the Obama people got what they wanted and they shouldn't expect us to anoint it or vote for it. Obama doesn't get my vote nor does he get many other voters. The RNC is not to blame, the DNC is. I will not stand for Hillary and Bill being trotted out like animals to please Obama at every turn. They need to realize that the DNC is no more.

Are you quoting the same economists who got us into the mortgage mess we are in now? Figures. By the way copying quotes from the WSJ to justify your position is pretty biased considering it's one of the most conservative news sources. McSame offers more of the same. If you are better off today than you were 8 years ago by all means vote for McCain. Note while you you're doing your calculations take account for our inflation levels which with the price of gas and other commodities has gone through the roof while our 401Ks sink into an abyss. Real change is comming but only with OBAMA/BIDEN come Nov.

    • Posted By: jonton127 @ 09/07/2008 7:43:25 PM

Mortgage mess? You can blame Joe Biden for the mortgage mess!!!!!! You think that he's somehow NOW going to change it? Maybe you should Google Biden and MBNA and just see what kind of bed partners Joe Biden has been keeping in this whole mortgage mess. You are ignorant if you want to blame George Bush and not lay any blame on the Democratic Congress AND Joe Biden!!! McCain is obviously trying to disassociate himself with the Bush Adminstration because of the messes that they have allowed. But they have only allowed them. Biden and the Democratic Congress have caused these messes.

    • Posted By: wossenschmidt@earthlink.net @ 09/06/2008 11:53:42 PM

Wake up and smell the roses. The democratic controlled congress is the cause of much of the mess we are in now. Bill Clinton vetoed a bill that would have given the go-ahead to drill in ANWAR. It that would have passed gas prices would be much lower. The economist didn't have anything to do with the mortgage mess we are in, the liberal democrats did, so its people like you that are to blame. Do a little research before you write your ignorant comments! Obama is UNQUALIFIED, PERIOD. Anyone who votes for him is a total idiot. Have a nice day.

I too want Hillary to speak up on the inadequacy of Sarah Palin's candidacy, but NOT because either of them is female. And though I agree that shooting caribou isn't "tough," I certainly don't define the toughness I want in a politician in terms of caring for one's own sick child. In fact, I don't judge politicians male or female on their parenting skills, thank you very much, and I hope and pray that most women and most voters don't either. Give me someone with the toughness to stay up all night fighting the health insurance lobbyists instead.!

Then you should have voted for Hillary. Because it strikes me that Obama is too cool to worry his pretty head about that. Likely he will call Hillary. So why must she be the supporting actress all the time? Just maybe she should have gotten the lead role this time.

  • Posted By: Sarahh @ 09/07/2008 12:56:42 PM

It is Hillary's responsibility because she is responsinle for the smears with which the republicans are running. They never could have gotten away with calling someone with Obama's history an "empty suit" or "elitist" raising Farrahkahn and Ayers, or distorting the "bitter" comment. Their false claims of having actually won due to voodoo math "fraud" without evidence have also helped the Republicans.

If the republicans win, Hillary owns the consequences.

She needs to come right out and say "In the heat of the battle we said a lot of thing that ware not true. Here is a list:

    I am very, very sorry"

Otherwise her future and her legacy are dirt.

    And I voted for her

    • Posted By: Esencia08 @ 09/07/2008 7:00:41 PM

Joe Biden made similar statements about Obama and now he is the veep nominee. Similarly, Joe Lieberman said the same things about Obama at the RNC. No Hillary is not responsible because she was running a campaign to win and was speaking the truth about Obama.

  • Posted By: LMAO @ 09/07/2008 6:53:03 PM

She has no future anymore - the ship sailed without her. Get this - the new bar for a woman President is whether she can field dress a moose and Arctic fishing. You have to understand that a lot of men AND women are in awe when they read about Palin's exploits. Now that is a much bigger constituency to play to than just women. So poor Hillary will have to pick up hunting and fishing in her old age. Is that feasible?

I am so amused when I think of Obama's scathing Annie Oakley comment. Well the real Annie Oakley showed up in response to his taunts.

Because she actually believes that the issues on which she ran are important-- she actually wasn't in it just for ego and power?

Because she doesn't want responsibility for 16 more years of disastrous republican rule?

Because she'd like a future in public life?

Patti Davis' article reinforces gender role sterotypes about women when she says that --

"Most women would probably define it as meeting the daily challenges of raising a family in an increasingly treacherous world. They would think about the nights with no sleep sitting up with a sick child, or a race to the emergency room with a child in pain. Most would not define toughness as the ability and willingness to shoot and kill an animal. "

But then Patti Davis herself exclaims that there are many different ways to define toughness! Unfortunately, there are many women who have internalized sexism of toward the female gender. A woman can hunt, branish an assault weapon, take care of their children, or better yet, women can have house husbands and Mr. moms to perform roles and duties that have been traditionally assigned to women.

Sarah Palin does not fit into the narrow gender stereotypes that have restricted women's ascent in society and this makes Ms. Palin a good role model for women irrespective of her political party affiliation. Not every woman will identity with Sarah Palin, nor do they need to. But that doesn't mean that Sarah Palin should be trounced upon by liberal minded women like Patti Davis who have not the expanded consciousness to understand the greater implications of Sarah Palin becoming the first Vice President in the history of this nation.

Sara Palin is being pawned off as America's GREAT WHITE HOPE. Think about it you have Obama who the presss has dogged and who has been made to explain himself to the the nation for the last 19 months, and there have been some outlets such as Faux news that would have dug up his mother and asked her questions if it was possible. In contrast you have Sara new on the scene who is surrounded by a cone of silence and the mainstream press is Dead Silent.

Man America is just freaking amazing!

Did we really dig up on Obama? How many times he attended Rev. Wright church? What did he hear at that church and what did he do about it? What passport did he travel on when he visited Indonesia? What schools did he atend in Indonesia and was he adopted by his Indonesian step-dad? What about his long relationship with Rezlo & the Iraqi billionaire? And what about his birthpaper to make sure he was born in Hawaii and not Kenya?

Gov. Palin is atrue American and past is easy to read up on. Obam own is very shady

  • Posted By: enigmaInCA @ 09/07/2008 5:38:24 PM

Ms. Davis appears to be confused in assessing that Senator McCain was going strictly after Hillary voters; it would appear that he was speaking more to his Republican base by nominating Gov. Palin. As such, pimping out Sen. Clinton would be quite useless, and says that the Democratic Party is the one to view women as one monolithic entity that can and should only take heart in the women they deem politically well-aligned.

The plaintive appeal of "Please help us communicate that putting a woman on a presidential ticket is only a good thing if it's the right woman" falls flat, when you consider the fact that the Democratic Party had no use for putting the right woman on the ticket when it really counted. We gave up the right woman for our party, but the Republicans were not stupid enough to give up the right woman for their party.

If Senator Obama can't fight his own battles now, what on earth will he do when faced with bin laden? Senator Obama is the candidate, and it's his job to speak to the voters and convince them that Sarah Palin is not the change we need. Sending out female surrogates at this late stage speaks volumes about where the real exploitation of women is coming from: no place other than the DNC.

And please, stop with the Roe v. Wade fear-mongering. A great many of our states will handle the issue responsibly, if Roe is ever over-turned.

I'm disappointed that you would pin a potential Obama loss on someone other than the man himself. Do you not believe in personal responsibilty? Senator Clinton is expected to own her loss; why the double-standard for Senator Obama?

I think Palin is pretty qualified - she has humility and desire to do the right thing. Plus she has a track record and understand midlle America needs. As opposed to a puffed up arrogant man who think he is God's gift to humanity. And nigh on 47 years he has zero accomplishments. Let me tell you achieving an Ivy League education is just that. Accomplishments is what move a society forward. And for where I sit that is what Palin have been doing for Alaska.

Yes, Hillary we need your voice to echo the voice of millions of women who are saddened, shocked, and subdued by Ms. Palin. I am/was one of those women teetering between Obama and McCain since you so gracefully and poignantly asked us to support Obama. I am from Florida and feel cheated out of my vote and now I feel cheated by my government in its assumption that I will vote for someone because she is a woman...period. I am insulted by this assumption. I would be happier if it were Biden/Obama and happier yet if it were Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton...but McCain/Palin? I am a registered Republican who is about to change party affiliations. Help us, Hillary!

You assume too much, my friend. I could not care less how our VP choices look and loving one's G-d is a personal matter and shouldn't even enter into politics. Hate her for it? I don't hate the woman. I dislike her inexperience as much as a lot of people dislike Obama for his inexperience. Loving one's family and country is admirable...and expected, especially in the United States, so don't even go there.

    • Posted By: jonton127 @ 09/07/2008 3:18:56 PM

The government did not ask you to vote for Palin because she is a woman. That is the mainstream media. The government ask you to vote for the ticket that you think will do the most for you. Will get the work done. Obama has his own agenda. Yes, he intends to change the government but not for the betterment of joe-consumer. Palin has a clean record for cleaning up corrupt government. Obama's record is only of getting into bed with socialists and terrorists. He attended the same church for over 20 years until it not longer suited him to be affiliated with their socialist views. Given the chance, he will sell out the entire United States just the same way.

Beautifully said. I, too, was offended by Gov. Palin's speech. It is easy to throw barbs when the recepient is not in the room to repsond. It is also a very shallow thing to do when your country is in dire condition. We need serious solutions, but the GOP chose only to have a one sided roast. Clearly, they lack the capacity to solve the problems they have largely created. I hope the rage I feel and others feel will serve as fuel for all of us to fight all the harder to see that Gov. Palin and Senator McCain never get the chance to do any further damage to this country.

    • Posted By: jonton127 @ 09/07/2008 3:05:24 PM

Further damage? What damage has either one of them done to the United States? Alaska is a better place because Sarah Palin was Governor for only two short years! Is Chicago a better place because of Obama? Sarah Palin was only standing up for herself and her family. She was fighting back to all the comments made by the MSM as soon as she was picked as McCain's running mate. If she didn't fight back, you would call her a whimp. The MSM claims they can't see her standing up to Putin or being successful in foreign relations then criticizes her for being a pitbull in lipstick. Vote for the ticket that will do what is best for our country. The person who has THE BEST record of making a change in corrupt government and senseless spending. McCain/Palin have actually ACCOMPLISHED so much more for this country than Obama/Biden can even claim to have done. If Obama is elected, we can kiss our freedom goodbye.

Straight from Palin's natural gas pipeline or what? 9/11 happened with Republicans in the White House, who still have not managed to catch the person who masterminded it and in the meantime sent 5,000 young Americans to their deaths chasing lies. The economy under those same Republicans is trashed, with the highest unemployment rate in yearsand massive deficit (remember Clinton's surplus?). Picking Palin is the height of sexism-- if she were a man, she would never have been selected. We owe Hillary a huge debt and we need her voice to rally us so that this farce called the Republican ticket goes no further than November 4th. dr.j

I think that this is where feminism is evolving, I as a man would like to hear more from Hillary just because she has a strong voice and for the reasons that Ms. Davis states, we need to do what we can to get the country on a track more oriented to evolving into the future than to repeating the mistakes from the past.
