Fact One: The Commissioner of Public Safety works at the pleasure of the Governor. It's just like a cabinet position. The Governor doesn't have to justify letting him go.

Secondly, as the article states, it was when the security detail first questioned Palin when she took office if there were any threats against the Governor or her family that this issue came up.

An Alaska State Trooper internal investivation in 2005, (before Palin was governor) concluded that Trooper Wooten had:

    a) threatened Sarah Palin's father
    b)tasered a 10 year old boy
    c) illegally shot a moose.

Ask yourself, if a law enforcement official had been shown to have done these things to someone in your family, wouldn't you ask why that guy was still on the force?

So far, there is no proof that the Governor had any abused her power. The sequence of events started and took on a life of their own when her security detail asked her about threats to her life or family.

Spin, Spin, Spin....Palin's father was with Wooten when the moose was shot. The 10 year old boy was his stepson who asked to be tasered to see what it felt like...some people I know spent a day in training volunteering for the experience...creepy I know....but I guess if you are curious. It will not kill you. A lot is said during a heated divorce... but if you cannot get past that... Sarah Palin was governor not her father, what did those threats have to do with her position as governor? In my mind direct family is spouse and children...will secret service be expected to cover Palin's parents, sisters brothers and extended family, I am more concerned about reports that her husband was given access to records and Alaska state business can we expect Mr. Palin to be involved in international dealings? That is scary a man who was part of an Alaska seccessionist movement (2002)may now be involved with high level US secrets... Let me guess the GOP spin, he joined to spy on the group not because he was interested in Alaska severing their relationship to the United States. McCain you are not a good enough liar to keep up with the tales that Bush, Cheney and the Rove machine have been spinning for the past 8 years....Give up uninvite Palin to the ticket and give us a ticket we can actually vote for.

Don't let repugnikkkans come on here and tell their lies and try to spin the truth. Sarah Palin abused her office as Governor and if she thinks that she can step in with mcsameasbush-cain and obstruct Justice, we will take her down. She is unfit to enter our White House.

Interesting switch for Republicans -- they don't usually begin the cover up until after they're elected. It's a wonder John McCain can sleep at night knowing that he is attempting to place the country in the hands of such a blatantly unqualified person. Her positions on every cultural issue is so far right than many republicans do not think that she is right for the country. John McCain is desperate to be president, so much so that he has lost all credibility. He has also lost any respect I have for him. Shameful. He is also protecting her from the media. She needs to answer for her record.

Thought Palin said "bring it on" and that she welcomed an investigation???? Guess that was another not so true thing she has said. I do agree it should be fair however. Remove this guy and put someone else in charge. But do not delay this. The investigation has already started and the date it was scheduled was set long before she became cadidate for vice pres. Soon, we will be seeing them blame the Obama camp for this.

Most of you guys posting hadn't even heard of Sarah Palin until a week ago. Now you're experts on her whole life story.

I live in Juneau, this story has been in the news since the spring. There's nothing there except a wacko cop married, then divorced to the sister of someone who became Governor.

Any reasonable person who looks at the facts as they have come out and ask, "Why is this guy still on the force?"

And you know what, he still is on the force. So where is the abuse of power?

The only person who lost his job in this whole thing is the Public Safety Commissioner which is a political appointment anyway. The Governor has the right to pick or changer her cabinet appointments as she sees fit. End of story.

The democrats here in Juneau are just trying to keep this story in the newspapers a little longer.

It's not just this case....it's the never ending stories that are perpetuated not just by Democrats, but also by Palin, herself. It's just too much of a leap to imagine this woman a "heartbeat away" from leading the free world.... I am sure that many people are pleased with her in Alaska. It appears that she has a lot of unfiished business up there and should do what the voters that know and love her best elected her to do....govern Alaska!

That argument might be plausible if she didn't do something similar with the librarian who wouldn't go along with censoring the library books in the Wasilla library while she was mayor of Wasilla. After refusing to censor the selection of books, she tried to fire her but the librarian of 7 years who had a good reputation in town and Palin had to back off. The problem with a short record is that there is not a lot of evidence. The problem with Palins short record is that in comes with a lot of problems for such a short record.

Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are proclaiming that they want to bring reform and transparency to Washington, but they turned their backs on transparency less than 7 days after forming their ticket. To demonstrate their commitment to transparency and reform, Sen. McCain needs to make Gov. Palin openly available to news media requests for interviews, and Gov. Palin needs to instruct her lawyers and surrogates to discontinue any actions that could be viewed as obstruction of the ongoing ethics investigation, in Alaska, related to Gov. Palin.

McCain/Palin profess to want business as usual in Washington to stop. They want to end corruption and backdoor dealing. Pretty admiral talk, but they are not elected yet and they can't muster up the walk. The investigation was authorized and funded by a bipartisan committee, if Palin is on the up and up she should welcome the investigation to prove her innocence. Now that the Palin's are lawyering up makes one think they have something to hide. The fact that the McCain/Palin election committee is trying to squash the investigation and delay the results only reassures the American people that Palin wasn't fully vetted (McCain said she was), because they wouldn't be scared of the outcome if they have already done their job.

Are they going to get away with it yet again? Firstly, they try to scuttle the investigation. Then, if they can't do that, Governor Palin will welcome the opportunity to discuss the case as long as she is not placed under oath and no record is made of the proceeding. (Translation: she will speak as long as she can lie with impunity). Finally, if worse comes to worse, there's still plenty of time for a pardon.

McCain/Palin wants full disclosure and and end to Washington as usual. Ummm I guess that means for everyone else but themselves. If they were really serious about doing what is right for the country (as they say they are) they would welcome the investigation as if Palin is on the up and up they shouldn't fear the outcome....now 1st dude is lawyering up, can you say COVER UP!

patiens,in using the statement "BTW, Todd and Sarah are both pretty easy on the eye. At least we can all agree with that." to express some inarticulate argument, you probably need to lay off the sauce and start learning to read the news again ...

I apologise for the double post.

  • Posted By: Logans_mom @ 09/06/2008 2:37:02 AM

It is just disgusting. How is the McCain camp going to spin this one?

  • Posted By: Dashcat @ 09/06/2008 2:35:29 AM

Gov. Palin doesn't seem to understand the concept of "abuse of power" since it seems she's been abusing her power since she was elected as Mayor of Wasilla. Now John McCain, having chosen her to be his VP, apparently without an in depth vetting, is interferring in Alaska's governmental proceedures in order to bail her out of or cover up her difficulties. First of all, if she has nothing to hide, she should get on with the investigation and prove herself right. Secondly, if she's so tough and self reliant, why does she need the almighty power of the GOP putting pressure on Alaska Republicans in order to save her skin? In my eyes this is just another abuse of power. I sincerely hope the Alaskan legislature is tough enough to withstand this power play. Truth is truth, you can't make it go away but you sure can try to bury it.

What a corrput, disgusting situation. Sara Palin is the vile, tacky, trashy side of America at it's worst!

  • Posted By: 530Rose @ 09/06/2008 2:34:10 AM

This investigation was initiated prior to her official pick as McCain's VP candidate. If the McCain camp wanted to quash it, they should have done so earlier. To interfere with the investigation at this late date looks extremely suspicious.

  • Posted By: TopJack @ 09/06/2008 2:32:54 AM

Sarah the Panzer is nothing more than an old, white, Nazi Republican dude in drag.

  • Posted By: Carolyn20 @ 09/06/2008 2:24:26 AM

I would have hoped that McCain would stay out of this and let Alaska's special investigator take care of it.
McCain's moving in to quash the investigation sounds like Nixonian politics, and it does not bode well for an independent process.

The fact that the McCain camp is getting heavy handed means there may be more of a problem then they had anticipated. Maybe he just should have vetted her first.

  • Posted By: McPalin @ 09/06/2008 2:23:59 AM

This is all just too rich! This investigation began months ago, with the support of a bipartisan legislature. Palin and her aides agreed to cooperate. Then, Palin was *inconveniently* drafted to be VP, and now suddenly the McCain camp is using bully tactics to suppress the investigation. Do I have to remind everyone that Palin filed ethics charges AGAINST HERSELF in order to move the investigation to the board that she appoints? (http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/05/legislature-steps-up-palin-ethics-investigation/) It just gets weirder and weirder.

I'm surprised by how willing people are to fully embrace a politician that they've known for a week. It's like going on an online dating site and then getting married once you meet. Sure, they look good on paper - they checked off all the right boxes - but what do you really know about them? Can you keep an open mind while you find out?

If Palin was a true patriot, she'd say, "Thanks, but no thanks." to John McCain and save us all the grief.
