Do not harp too much hope on the smooth functioning of the LHC after its technical fault is remedied later this year. This gigantic device can certainly be difficult to manage. Given its mind-boggling complexity, there will be no guarantee that it will not go into hibernation again.

Much has been said about the near $10 billion monstrous machine, and its millions of dollars of monthly maintenance. In the final analysis, are we not paying an incredible hefty price for piercing into the innermost mystery of atoms?

Perhaps Dark matter is somehow connected with the anti-Higgs boson but that would take us into the supersymmetry realm.

Yet again, dark matter could somehow be rolled up along the hidden dimensions of Sting theory.

There will be no end to the findings because surely the boson could still be broken down to smaller pieces similarly with the quarks and what not. What about the space between the bosons and the quarks? What is in between?

Regarding the security concerns it seems to me some people just play "fear tone". So far none of the accidents (like Chernobyl) were caused by science output itself i.e. by error or miscalculation in the science behind, but by human factor, politics and other reasons. Anyway if the world is going to be destroyed, it would definitely be better end by a black hole than by nuclear missiles or pollution :)

sorry, there are many big bangs on the story of the univerese than own beggin 13 700 million of years.

the collition and discovered of the behavior atoms, could give me the reasson, there are many black holes in the universe than one like Sir Hawkins said.

I like read things like this, I avoid topics like war or hungry in many cowntries abroad, altough I know that the bad news are many that good news, I would rather read about the development and research inside the universe near and far.

I agree, excellent article but focused on science before safety (cart before the horse?)

Collisions are weeks or months away and it may take years to determine if dangerous particles were created.

The safety opposition argues that CERN is minimizing the danger and misrepresenting the facts.

Several papers recent papers all conclude that Hawking Radiation is fundamentally flawed conjecture, micro black holes will not evaporate!

A common argument is that cosmic rays prove safety, they do not. If cosmic rays create stable neutral micro black holes, all will travel through Earth, and super fluidity may allow the same mBH to travel through Neutron stars or other cosmological bodies without harm.

If micro black holes are created by head-on collisions in particle colliders some percentage will travel too slowly to escape Earth's gravity.

The safety opposition includes senior Physics PHD Dr. Rainer Plaga who refutes CERNs conclusions of safety.

The opposition includes visiting professor of Physics Dr. Otto Rossler who is famous for inventing Chaos Theory's Rossler attractor and founder of Endophysics. Dr Rossler theorizes that Hawking Radiation is not possible, micro black holes would grow exponentially over decades or centuries and CERN's cosmic ray arguments are flawed including failure to account for super fluidity of neutron stars.

Former cosmic ray researcher, California math champion and Nuclear Safety Officer Walter L. Wagner discovered flaws with CERN's safety arguments and prompted CERN to write a new safety report.

The opposition argues that the Large Hadron Collider may be safe, it may be disastrous. Like launching shuttles in freezing weather, we should not launch until the safety or danger can be accurately calculated. Currently it can not.

This article greatly enhanced my ability to understand the possibilities the LHC may provide modern science. Fear of the unknown, is a risk worth taking to unleash the many answers that may come form this awesome tool. Good Luck and God Speed

Excellent article! I am thrilled media outlets such as Newsweek are looking into this machine-- and its impact.

With that said, I am still very concerned about the lack of third-party, independent research about th risks of this machine. Although the Internet chat boards are filled with people criticizing those who are speaking out, calling us "ignorant" "naysayers" and "brain-dead" individuals as nothing more than Chicken Littles with an active keyboard. But the reality is, when you dig deeper, you will see CERN's independent, third-party safety reviews are clearly lacking, and are merely set-up to "complement previous studies." They say there is "no conceivable threat from the LHC." But many of mankind's most famous tragedies came from "inconceivable threats" which, if those closely involved only had more imagination, would have clearly seen the threats-- such as icebergs, Chernobyl, and terrorists using aircraft as missles.

A healthy dialog about risks and rewards of the LHC should be encouraged and embraced -- but instead, CERN is more concerned with demonizing those who want us to move a bit slower examining the ramifications of these experiments. I think the people of this planet deserve more than a flippant response such as "we're still here aren't we?" when you're dealing with a much, much, much more powerful machine that can create temperatures "100,000 times hotter than the core of the sun" on Earth.

I've seen the info and seminars led by CERN to supposedly ease our concerns about this contraption, and it only leaves me much more concerned. The bitter animosity exhibited by the top scientists, such as Jonathan Ellis, toward any one who dares raise concerns about the LHC is truly frightening-- and shows how dangerous this whole project is. They are clearly blinded by their ambition-- and it is us, the people of the Earth, who may pay the ultimate consequences of their actions.

The LHC should not be fired up until more experiments by third-party groups are conducted. And CERN should quit attacking those who rightfully question the safety of the LHC. For example, what could possibly go wrong with this device? Who really controls it, and what are the ramifications of people with questionable motives harnessing the power of this machine?
