No thinking woman is going to believe that Sarah Palin represents Clinton voters. She's simply the same close-minded Conservative Republican as the rest, male or female, Her beliefs on key issues is out of step with the majority of female voters, and sooner or later she will go on TV and show that. To call her views that of Feminists is rediculous. She is to be applauded for her rise in politics, but her politics and Clinton supporter's politics are not at all alike. Everyone sees the Republican game in this, and the thinkers who pay attention to policy issues won't buy the story. No real affect on voters, other than the Conservative/Evangeliocal far right, who are jumping with joy after not caring much for John McCain. Nice try, but not now, not ever.

Has Obama BEEN getting "tough" scrutiny? Really? Where in the 19 months he's been running have you all asked him about Ayers, Acorn, his cousin Odinga, etc?? I've been hearing about it, but not from you guys.

Also, Dobson was elected to what position in the government? Oh right, he wasn't.

I hope one day REAL soon, the people who vote for the top of the democratic field, come to understand they only care about being in power, they don;t give a whit about your situation. their goal in life is to destroy the freedoms we have and turn this country into a communist polce state where they tell you how many children you can have, what doctor you can see and when. where your kids go to school, and what kind of job you can have. all they want is TOTAL control of your existence becaus that is all they will give you.

Folks would be drunk, high, stupid AND CRAZY to ask HIllary to work against Palin - unlike the Democratic Party Leadership , the Republicans are standing with her!!! Had the Dem leadership not carried Obama like a bunch of schoolgirls with a crush - ESPECIALLY after ALL that HIllary and BIll did for the party - we would have candidate worth voting for.

The hypocrisy and sexism are yours Anna... unless you can point to your article questioning a male candidate's ability to serve due to a large family. Radical feminists (ex: NOW) blew credibility when they defended Bill Clinton's sexual misconduct and looked away in the face of a credible rape accusation. There is certainly a double standard at work here, and it is yours and other liberal feminists who refuse to acknowledge that there are other strong, independent women out there giving lie to their liberal lockstep.

  • Posted By: happyboy72848 @ 09/08/2008 5:28:25 PM

Is anyone really surprised by the callous hypocracy of the Republicans. I think not. People who actually think, instead of walking in Conservative/Evangelical lockstep, know the rediculous nature of phoney embracement of the feminist movement. There are few real Republican feminists. Ms. Palin is a feeble attempt to win Clinton supporters. It won't work, because Clinton supporters understand that Ms. Palin just represents more failed Republican policies and in-sync lip-service about improving the lot of America,s women. Thinking folks won't be fooled by the Republican ruse. It is time for real change and not the time for McBush/Palin. Vote on November 4th please. This was a truly substative article and spot on the mark.

Your editorial piece is neither here nor there. What word of REFORMIST didn't you understand??? There a whole new revolution going on, and McCain / Palin are going to kick butts in both the democrats and republican camp of fools ... do nothing Congress. You're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Idiot!

I recall there was this guy who came into the oval office 8 years ago to reform Washington and to be a uniter not a divider. How did that work for you? You right-wing nuts never learn.

      • Posted By: Porkeebear @ 09/08/2008 5:05:04 PM

Yea, and I can recall another president 8-yrs. before that that allowed a bunch of fanatics to bomb the Cole, embassies in Kenya and Nairobi, allowed the genocide of Bosnia and Rwanda; and couldn't reform congress either. So what are you trying to say, Obama/Biden can do better - I think not. If you want to continue to stick your head in the sand - oh well lol.

Anna Quindlen is 100% correct. Republicans have always been against women's rights. I remember Rush Limbaugh always referring to women fighting for equal rights as "feminazis". The religious right is the most guilty. They were never in favor of women with children leaving their home every day to pursue a career. Republicans are indeed the biggest hypocrites that exist.

  • Posted By: jcain232 @ 09/08/2008 12:50:53 PM

Newsweek has lost touch and is no longer the unbiased source I sought out.
As a Republican male, I have no idea what you are talking about. Women are and have been the backbone of the Republican party. I live in Texas and look at our leadership -- Kay Bailey, Elizabeth Ames Jones, Tina Benkiser, Jane Nelson, Florence Shaprio, Betty Brown, Debbie Riddle, Lois Kolhkorst, etc...
The feminist movement you stand for is similiar to Al Gore's fake enviromental movement (he had 8 years in the White House and we never heard "global warming"). You want it to be a political talking point and that talking point only exists if the good 'ole boy democrats + Obama's team continue not to believe in everyday women that multi-task, balance budgets, raise children, run businesses and hold political office.
The R's also lead the way -- Clarence Thomas, Sandra Day O'Connor, etc... But the D's take credit because they have more congessmen that are minoirites. Well, that's a district by district issue and ya'll don't mind as long as you are "keeping them in their place."

So Anna, get over it...move out of the way....we will lead the way again.

    • Posted By: Jurr @ 09/08/2008 1:12:10 PM

Uh dude republicans have been leading the way for the last 8 years. Where has that gotten us? $500 billion budget shortfall, wars on 2 fronts with over 4,000 dead & another trillion in debt, millions of Americans are losing their jobs & homes, wages are stagnant, everyday Americans are suffering from high cost of living, high energy costs, the gap between middle class & wealthy growing by leaps and bounds while more middle class americans are falling closer & closer to the poverty level, our seniors are having to work longer & harder even after they have 'retired' .

The only bright spot is that the BIG OIL has been making record profits since the end of Bush's 1st year in office. McCain promises to continue these trends as he has adopted most of Bush's economic policies and voted in favor of Bush 90% of the time. But hey let's label Obama a babykiller & a muslim terrorist to rally the base so we can continue business as usual.

McCain represents the status quo that AINT WORKING. I voted for Bush TWICE because I believed his BS- shame on me I know, but know we have a chance to break out of this downward cycle. McCain has sold out to special interests with a special mention for BIG OIL, he is not the maverick, he is a old, broken down puppet that gets angry a lot.

I wish logic and facts actually got through to conservatives. Unfortunately, they really don't care.

        • Posted By: MidAmericaMomma @ 09/08/2008 5:13:49 PM

No, really? Facts, you say? Maybe it would do the libs a bit of good to TRULY look at the facts for once. Clinton didn't do much of anything except NAFTA when he was pres, and despite the fact that unemployment is at 6% now, it was even higher before Bush took over... It's only been in the last 5 years that it started going up again. And, for your info, Dems voted for the war, too. Everyone in this country was angry when 9/11 happened, and a vast majority of the people here wanted revenge and protection. Get the facts straight. Liberals all want to blame the administration for the position we're in now, but you know what? It wasn't just the Republican members of our government that did this to us. It was ALL of them, Dems included. As an Illinois citizen, I can guarantee that I wouldn't vote for Obama if someone gave me money to do so. "...my Muslim religion..." "You mean your Christian religion?" "Huh? Oh, yes.. my Christian religion." Yeah...Obama's a great man. Can't even remember what his own religion is. If a man that's been in a Christian (...if you want to call it that...) church for over 20 years can't even remember he's a Christian and not a Muslim, how can you expect him to remember what side we're on in a war against terrorists?

As a "feminist" you should be happy for the success of any woman, even if you don't agree with her views.
Also, I don't believe Palin was chosen to appeal to the Hillary voters. They are two totally different people with very different views. Palin was brought in to energize the Republican party with a sense of freshness and change. It remains to be seen if she motivates Republican women the way that Hillary moved Democratic women. I hope she does- we need a champion too! By the way, I'm very grateful to Hillary for what she has accomplished for ALL women.

There are many more women in this country who can relate to Gov. Palin's life than Hillary Clinton's life. Palin is the real deal. No victim role, no riding on the political coat tails of a spouse, no Ivy League education. Just plain old hard work, and sheer determination. Go Sarah Go!

Not only is Sarah, one of them, her entire family is like people in small and medium sized towns in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin. She is SO much like people from those places it's spooky. Why? You don't usually see folks like this in Washington and these small towners are going to send someone like Sarah thinking that's exactly what the doctor ordered.

It's Karl Rove who has repacked "Dubya" into a northern Alaska version of the real live person, who just like Bush is like someone you find youself taliking to at the church picnic and you like him. The Texas based brand is poison in politics today ( unlike 4 years ago when "W" was like a rock star that people in Kansas and Colorado would drive hundreds of miles just to see ). The interesting thing is how Alaska is an energy rich state that has been prospering because of high oil prices unlike the rest of the country.

QUINDLEN: "I hope Senator Clinton will travel the country and say so."

Why is it Sen Clinton's job? Is she still running for president? Polls slip, Palin's a hit and suddenly barry needs help and the Clintons are back in the picture. Hypocrisy? Read any article in the days before the convention about how the Clintons only care about themselves, they're just about saving their legacy, they'll sabotage Obama because Sen Clitnon wants to run again, they're stealing attention from Obama, why can't they just go away, don't they get it it's not about them anymore. A week later who does he need? The Clintons. And are they there? Yes.

Where's DODD? KERRY? DEAN? PELOSI? CLYBURN? BRAZILE? RICHARDSON? DASCHLE? LEAHEY? RENGEL? OBAMA himself?

Are they out campaigning to make sure a democrat gets in the WH? Did they ever campaign for their opponent before the convention? No. No one has and no one has ever had 18M votes as a runner up. Are they standing up finally and saying leave Sen & Pres Clinton alone? Thanked them? Ever? Oh that's right - they each got 17 words of "lavish praise" in barry's styrofoam pillar speech. His camp is still saying nasty things and the MSM is still going after them. Why hasn't Barry paid down her debt? Why do the Clintons get called on when needed and trashed when they're not. And who will be blamed if Obama loses?

    Hypocritical?

    • Posted By: Hillaristka @ 09/08/2008 4:52:56 PM

To Katvan: I so agree with you! To ask Hillary to go and fight Palin? Have not the demo bosses and liberal media tortured her long enough?
Hillary--who is a liberal feminist--is probably saluting Sarah Palin for her accomplishments, toughness, intelligence and more. Hillary must be shocked as she sees the same viscious attacks on a successful woman as she had endured: from the same demo-Lib party/media elite. I supported Hillary because I saw her bravery and I would Palin except for her ideology.
So I salute Palin as woman and a feminist in her different way but cannot vote for her.

Obamistas enabled Palins phenomenon --their stupidity in wasting 18 mlns votes is monumental!!
Hillary would be laughed at by Palin: after all Palin got full support from her party when the media machine started to trash her. whereas Hillary was kicked for 6 months by the likes of Quinland. Republicans elevated Palin with all her 'warts'; the Demo party destroyed and humilaited Hillary even though she was the best candidate with the most votes. They dragged her through Demo convention and wallowed in joy at her harakiri. enough. Fend for yourself--send your good Joe to do the dirty work.

All other issues aside, "How do we beat the bitch" is not sexist, any more than "how do we beat the SOB" would be sexist: it is purely a statement of distaste for the opponent. That Quindlen sees it otherwise demonstrates the lengths to which she's grasping: "see, we media types and Feminazis aren't being sexist against Governor Palin, anything we say is really the Republicans' fault." Which is just another way of saying "It's okay to be sexist against a Republican." Which is itself yet another variant of "We can say ANYTHING about a Republican, or all of them collectively."

Fine if you want, Newsweek. But you just managed to convince most of America that you're not real journalists anymore. And that will cost you both your bully pulpit and your revenue base. Stupid move.

As a hick in rural New Mexico, I've learned much here. I learned that liberals think that conservative women should stay at home with their kids while liberal women work at jobs at which they assert that Republicans want women to stay at home with their kids. As a hick, I'm not sure that makes sense. The liberals are right, aren't they? Or is Ms. Quindlen saying that both liberals and conservatives want conservative women to stay home?

Palin, who opposes abortion even in case of rape or incest, was a virtual unknown outside Alaska until McCain elevated her to the national stage as his surprise choice to join him on the Republican ticket 11 days ago. Hope Ted Bundys kids will get to be born and a woman has to endure that night for the next 18+ years of her life 15 years after the rapist is relesed! This is GOP S.O.P.!!!FACT

      • Posted By: MidAmericaMomma @ 09/08/2008 4:32:05 PM

You've made this comment several times already, and it was idiotic the first time, not to mention this time as well. Just because someone opposes something doesn't mean she is going to try to take the rights away from everyone. I personally oppose abortion. Note the 'personally'. I would never have an abortion myself. But even God gave every human the right to choose her own path. And many of us pro-life believers feel the same way. I believe abortion shouldn't be a readily available form of birth control for women that want their fun without the responsibility. Being a victim of rape shouldn't excuse the murder of a child. It certainly isn't the child's fault a woman was raped. Rape is a horrible tragedy, but it doesn't mean that the child can't find a loving family out there somewhere to adopt it if the mother finds she can't keep it. By the way, my best friend was raped, and she kept her child. And she loves her very much.

I'm nearly speechless after reading these comments. I???m grateful for the debate, but it appears that most everyone here has completely missed Quindlen???s point. I'm torn whether to support Palin, mostly because she's a woman, and this might shake up Washington like it's never shaken before, but I'm appalled by her policies. I'm disgusted by the GOP's claims that everyone is sexist unless your vote Republican because they have a woman on their ticket. After the past two weeks, I???ve decided that the U.S. isn't ready for a female in either party to run as high as Sarah or Hillary are reaching, because our whole damn country is still sexist, in both social and political veins. Where was the GOP complaining when Hillary or Nancy Pelosi were being ridiculted on matters completely unrelated to their political agenda like their clothes or their families? Fair is when you question politicians about their beliefs and how they plan to run government, not when different questions show up for different people on the basis of their gender or race. Regardles, Palin continues to throw the gender card when anyone asks about her record in AK. As Quindlen noted, Palin has no problem throwing elbows but anytime some come her way, she and the rest of the Republican party start yelling"sexist", kinda like McCain so often resorts to "POW". I think what Quindlen is trying to say in her article (which I though was quite articulate and concise), is that the GOP has quickly taken new reins on an old horse (GOP platform) so that its rider (the lovely Palin) doesn't fall off because the GOP is so used to its eroded wealthy white man???s trail to glory. It's rather ironic. I don't think anyone saw this coming. It could either be a genius move for the GOP, or if Palin???s issues from AK eventually bubble up, it could be a disaster. Now that Palin is in the good ol??? boys??? saddle, they???ll have to be extremely careful with their old standards (if they really mean change, hurray! But I doubt it). I find it discouraging that so many readers have completely missed Quindlen's mark. I guess if you don't want to see something, you close your eyes, and blindly walk into the desert. Which is exactly how voters seem to be going (over and over again). I won???t be voting for Palin because she has ovaries and she can???t run a country on the basis that she???s a woman. I???m voting against Palin because she is a step backward in the women's movement. Not forward. And frankly, her policies suck. Time will tell if she only becomes a ???progressive??? write-off to push the GOP???s main man into an office that has been crucified by idiots. Apparently everyone here has been under a rock for the last eight years, and maybe longer, since no one seems to remember the sacrifices that came with the women's movement of the past century. What a tragedy Palin is for this country already. I almost feel bad for her because it's Palin who completely missed it.
