Thank you, Anna, for putting down what many of us enlightened women (and thankfully, our spouses) have been thinking. The hypocrisy of the GOP, and especially of the Christian right, has reached a zenith I never thought I'd see. What would James Dobson say if the mother of the pregrant unwed teenager was a Democrat? Sarah Palin's nomination is an insult to Hillary supporters, who are smart enough not to vote for a platform that ignores or dismisses women's issues. It is an insult to the many Republican women who are far more qualitifed to be a heartbeat (or a cancer cell) away from being President. But to the rest of us thinking voters, it is no more than an amusing reminder of how John McBush is really is more of the same--taking bad advice, making knee-jerk decisions, flip-flopping positions. I'm a registered independent, and there was a time when I could have voted for McCain--at least until he showed us that he'll say or do anything to get elected. What a shame, and what a lesson, to see a man of honor so degraded by ambition and politics.

      Good job...

Sarah "dismisses women's issues"??? What you really mean is that you don't like her view on women's issues. Sarah deals with women's issues every day she is a mother and goes to work. Abortion is a women's issue and Sarah is pro-life. Keeping her Down's baby because she is pro-life is not exactly dismissing the issue. DISMISSING the issue is when a candidate replies to a women's issue with the remark "it's above my paygrade".

"thinkingwoman"????? You are describing BHO and the Democrats - must be a typo, huh?

Been-There-Done-That Ask the woman who was raped and impregnated by her rapist, does she want to have his child? Did you know that Cindy McCain approves of abortions due to rape and incest?

  • Posted By: m.nolan @ 09/08/2008 9:30:50 AM

The hypocrisy is dripping on both sides. I am a Hillary Clinton supporter who is appalled at my sisters on the Left who have questioned and derided Palin's DECISION to be a working mom and who have used her daughter's pregnancy as a reason to find fault with her parenting. The fact that the media (who 55% of Americans find are biased and hurting our election process more than big money contributions) are "vetting" this woman more than they ever did the Democratic nominee for president (why the stories about Palin's husband's DUI when he was 22 and not ONE story about Obama's drug abuse when in his 20's??? Why all the stories on Palin's mother-in-law not likely to vote for Palin and NO stories on Obama's father who was an abusive drunk who had children with multiple mothers?) is disgusting and disturbing. I too, hope Hillary Clinton speaks about sexism in this election, particularly as it applies to herself: she garnered 18 milllion votes yet lost out on the VEEP to a guy who while in the race, got less than 3 thousand. Sign me a Hillary Clinton supporter who's voting McCain/Palin in '08.

    • Posted By: Hillaristka @ 09/08/2008 3:52:52 PM

      You are so right!!
Also: Liberal media and demo bosses enabled Palin's Explosion. Had Obama put Hillary on his ticket he would have no Palin but would have solid 18 mlns votes!!
The stupidity of Obama/Pelosi gang takes my breath away.

Why is the DNC sending dozens of lawyers to Alaska to find dirt on Palin? Has the RNC send dozens of lawyers to Chicago to find dirt on Obama?

      • Posted By: muffinb @ 09/08/2008 12:11:00 PM

Oh, I'm sure they have. But one reason they are sending people to Alaska is because the Republicans didn't have any info on Palin. They didn't vet her as they should have, so someone needs to find out the score. Give me a break!!

    • Posted By: navymom06 @ 09/08/2008 9:46:57 AM

Then you never were a true Hillary supporter because this Palin stands for nothing Hillary does. Who cares about her daugthers life it's the fact that she can't even be trusted to talk to the press yet because she know nothing. Hillary is a smart women who can play with the big boys and doesn't need some one to cry sexist remarks when it gets to hot.

      • Posted By: All's Fair @ 09/08/2008 10:03:36 AM

        Go NavyMom!! You are right!

        • Posted By: KUHawkFan @ 09/08/2008 11:02:36 AM

This is the same Hillary Clinton that had to lie about fleeing bullets and then recant her statement when they had a film clip showing the opposite. In all honesty I would have rather seen Hillary Clinton win the Democratic nomimation, least I know where she stands and what her core beliefs are. I know Sara Palin's core beliefs and I admire them, i can see them in full glory in her family. Obama on the other hand cannot complete a full sentence about core conviction she does not iether know or understand himself. He stammers on the simplest of questions because he has no core convictions. His statements change according to his audience, just as Biden's do. McCains message may bore some but it is consistent. Give me McCain/Palin any day.

      • Posted By: MotherOfOne28 @ 09/08/2008 10:16:13 AM

I second your comment. Palin sister came our for an interview resently and I am wondering why are they interviewing her, she is not running for V.P. where is Sarah Palin? why isn't she talking, is it that she is still being prep. so she wont mess up and say the wrong thing!!!!!!!!!!!
You could throw Hillary out there with the boys and she would be able to hold her own, and sarah had the never to say Hillary needs to understand that what the media is doing to her comes with the territory during the primaries and now she and the GOP's have the nerve to be crying sexism now that they are at the end of the media tough questions and investigations.......Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton and could never handle the things she went through during the primaries, or accomplish all she has.

  • Posted By: VinceP1974 @ 09/08/2008 1:38:52 PM

You know what's dangerous, there are so many of these intolerant Leftists in the media making decisions based on their perverted politics that determine what we see and don't see on TV. I trust NONE of it.

    • Posted By: dark.energy363 @ 09/08/2008 3:52:32 PM

Intolerant- again, your kidding me. I have been sitting here reading all of this self rightous BS. I can hardly contain myself. Intolerant- shall we list all of the types of people your ilk seemingly never tire of condeming. Albeit, in the name of the lord. Intolerant....now I have heard it all. The right is now claiming tolerance....

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 09/08/2008 2:06:27 PM

I agree to many left and right but trust is non-exsistent!

  • Posted By: Lorraine_Berchtold @ 09/08/2008 3:36:16 PM

Anna, your anger towards Republicans and "the right wing" was palpable as i read your article; however, i think your anger is misdirected. Why don't you and the rest of the liberal media ask yourselves one simple question, "Why DIDN"T Barak Obama pick Hillary Clinton as his running mate?!" if Obama had picked Hillary as his VP, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.

    • Posted By: popmanifesto @ 09/08/2008 3:49:18 PM

Because the question we're really asking, and that you might take a minute to ask yourself, is What the h*ll have these Republicans done to our country and how did we let them get away with it?!!!

  • Posted By: Insight1997 @ 09/08/2008 3:26:15 PM

To me it boils down to: are you seeking to advance your cause or your party? Would Abe Lincoln be proud today to see a black American running for president? One would dare to guess yes regardless of which party's ticket he appeared. Woman should be proud of Gov. Palin and the inroads she has made not only for women but for mankind and politics in particular. And, if she can advance the slow moving conservatives along where other advocates and methods fail, isn't the women's position fortified not the less?

    • Posted By: seriouslynotrepublican @ 09/08/2008 3:48:44 PM

Are you aware that Abe LIncoln was not an advocate for Blacks. He felt the best resolve for the Black problem is America was a quick exodus to South America. He did not sign the Emancipation Proclamation because he wanted to free the slaves. He signed the proclamation because he needed the slaves to fight on the side of the Union in the Civil War. He most likely would not be happy to see an African American running for President. He would gasp.

  • Posted By: mistermcfrugal @ 09/08/2008 1:47:01 PM

How sweet it is! As I look at the polls showing McCain beating the Messiah, I have to thank the Messiah for saving the Republican Party by kicking Hillary into the sewer. He could have won with her but hated her too much to put her on his ticket. Fine, but let's try to hold down on the "Obama lost because of racism" postings on Nov. 5.

I'm a 30 year old republican male and I could not care less about your ancient gender and race wars. While you and your ilk run around TALKING about transcending these issues, the Republicans have leap frogged liberals all throughout history with their ACTIONS (abolishing slavery, appointing Sandra O'Connor and Clarence Thomas and now Palin). That's because regardless of what might have been said in the past by some in the GOP, repbublican voters as a whole vote for those who we believe to posess character, judgement and the courage to stand up for their own principles, regardless of that person's gender or race. Really, though, I don't expect a liberal to understand that concept or, to accept reality.

    • Posted By: dark.energy363 @ 09/08/2008 3:45:50 PM

Clarence Thomas? You've got to be kidding me. That "uncle tom" was a "C" student who was put on the bench so the pappa Bush could say they had their token black. You ask the average black person about Mr. Clarence "uncle"tomas. See what they/we have to say.

  • Posted By: kaywayMI @ 09/08/2008 3:24:44 PM

With Obama it's about race, with Palin is about gender, who cares about race and gender and look at the bigger picture!!! People are so in "shock and awwwwwwwe" with Palin (using her family to get votes) that they don't see how truly out of touch she is with the lower 49, and the rest of the world for that matter. Have people developed amnesia since 9/11?? Religious fanatics are what make leaders dangerous! How does she know God's will!!!!

    • Posted By: BeALady @ 09/08/2008 3:43:04 PM

How is the nomination of Barack about race? If you had presented Clarence Thomas to blacks and said, hey here is your candidate, we would have spit him out and had nothing for him. His views don't align themselves to many of the issues that African Americans care about. Blacks are voting for the democratic candidate in the same percentages that they always have because of issues. The talking points about blacks voting on race is a justification for women voting gender. It's a bunch of crap.

Republicans are pragmatics. The Democratic party does'nt get it and they going to loose this election. In a act of affirmative action at its best they have nominated the most unqualified candidate in the last 100 years. Sarah Palin is a product of the women's movement. Women will address their fustrations on election day and a lot of us will vote democratic in the congressional races but will vote MCcain/Palin for the White House. After all the candidate to VP is a woman.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 09/08/2008 2:12:29 PM

Enjoy your ride! don't forget you WILL lose more rights than just this,, you re-live a rape every day for life!
Palin, who opposes abortion even in case of rape or incest, was a virtual unknown outside Alaska until McCain elevated her to the national stage as his surprise choice to join him on the Republican ticket 11 days ago.

      • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/08/2008 3:40:04 PM

Let's wait and see if Governor Palin's personal views translate into policy . She's got some interviews coming up, it should be interested

  • Posted By: THOMMIE @ 09/08/2008 3:39:35 PM

My dear lady, I suggest you think back a few years ago to the newt Gingrich days when a certain susan molinari followed newt like his little pit bull. She was good at barking the radical rights positions even when they hurt women and families, her natural constituency. It was not until newt sent her on the floor to debate sheila jackson-lee in opposition to affirmative action that she realized she had been used. When sheila reminded her how many white women had benefitted by affirmative action, you could visually she her light bulb moment, she fled the chamber, and within 60 days fled the congress. And what ever happened to katherine harris who stole the election in Florida for jeb and w. They gave her a congressional seat for one term and now she has been banished to oblivion, And what about christine todd-whitman. Where is she or liz dole. The repubs have no long term use for women period..

  • Posted By: holmantx @ 09/08/2008 2:33:03 PM

Men look at Palin and see their mothers. It is visceral. Momma is tough. Momma enforces the budget. Momma has my best interests at heart ??? always. She will always love and be faithful to me. To redact a phrase by McCain ??? we are ALL momma???s boys at heart.

  • Posted By: jamiel @ 09/08/2008 2:05:42 PM

Talk about slanted, ranting diatribe. That article was one of the worst pieces of journalism I have ever read. Why would someone with obvious irrational, biased, untruthful viewpoints be given a place on Newsweek to spew it?

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/08/2008 3:38:44 PM

Nobody was angrier than I when Bush got re-elected in 2004. If McCain wins, however, it will be the fault of the DNC, party elites, and Obama. This was a no lose year for Democrats. You can't blame the republicans for this debacle.

  • Posted By: rbolend @ 09/08/2008 3:07:10 PM

Anna Quindlen, So are you jealous or simply scared that your view of feminism has always been wrong? Your words prove the fact that the sameness feminism of the 60???s has attempted to force down the throats of the American public have proven to be false. Does that fact scare you? The conservatives have always objected to that fake feminism, still do. While you speak of rank hypocrisy when observing the conservative acceptance of Sarah Palin, proving you still don???t know the difference between sameness and equality. I don???t pity you, but rather take pleasure in the squirming you and those like you are experiencing these days. Anna, you had better get ready because change, real change is coming and I???m not so sure you???re going to like it.

    • Posted By: dark.energy363 @ 09/08/2008 3:38:10 PM

So now all of a sudden the republican party is the bastion of feminism. Give me a break. Let me get this right Sarah Palin will provide the kind of open mindedness necessary for change. Give me a break. This is a woman who doesnt even beleive in contraception. Who doent beleive in choice even in instances of rape or incest. Yea, shes really really a supporter of women rights. BTW, if this pregnant girl had been the daughter of a minority group you would/do raise "holy" hell. but with her its a private tragedy. And where was Sarah when her daughter was getting knocked up. Apparently she cant work and run her family cause the kids are straying. Also, so much for abstinence only. Me thinks it fell short this time.

  • Posted By: DemNoLongersince June 08 @ 09/08/2008 2:05:05 PM

Can you please find some other reason why I, as a feminist and former Democrat, should not vote for a competent woman whose career trajectory has been far more similar to the women I know than the elitist women decrying her nomination. So what if it took the Republican party a long time to get here...at least they are here which is a hell of a lot more than you can say about the Democrats. I hope and pray that Hillary does not degrade herself for a man who did not even vet her for the VP slot. I know the liberal media establishment is afraid because you said women would not matter...wrong again.

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/08/2008 3:37:05 PM

If Obama loses it will be because he thought he was too good for Hillary. Now the elites are mad because McCain responded brilliantly. It is sickening. Hillary is too good for Obama

If Obama is empty then Palin is transparent and mean spirited tword your own. Can you re-live a rape for 18+ years EVERY DAY???

Hypocrysy=MSM saying they aren't biased when they clearly are. I can only laugh at the idiocy in this article. What a waste of the time it took to write this garbage. With stuff like this written daily, I am getting happier by the day as Palin is clearly public enemy #1 to the Democrats and thier adoring fans in the MSM...

McCain/Palin=The ticket that finally drove the MSM over the edge and openly exposed them for who they really are and have been for years. Especially the last 8!

  • Posted By: philmon @ 09/08/2008 3:13:57 PM

PTA, huh? Going lower than even Obama's "Mayor" diss. Governor. She's the Governor. And they only did brought it up because Obama 1) glossed glaringly over that fact, and 2) he doesn't have any more experience than she has and he's running for the #1 spot.

I know those on the Left have this cariacature of conservatives where we're all a bunch of racist, sexist, back-woods idiots, or greedy, corrupt businessmen keepin' the rest of our own constituency ignorant and down by having them wave flags. It's really amazing how silly we look when people pretend we believe things we do not.

Conservatives have generally been against affirmative action. That's not because we hated women or minorities, it's because we hated racism and sexism -- affirmative action only institutionalizes them. As I recall, Maggie Thatcher was a conservative and by all accounts a woman who did it all. Resident Regan put Sandra Day O'Connor up for the Supreme Court. She appears to be a woman. Condeleza Rice, woman. Secretary of State. One of five in GW Bush's cabinet.

When Geraldine Ferarro suggested that Affirmative Action attitudes might have had something to do with Obama's success, she was kicked out of Hillary's campaign. But that's cool. Only Republicans can be hypocritical.

See, when you dismiss any woman who disagrees with you for being some sort of zombies, then you can pretend that Conservatives have "suddenly" found their inner feminist. We've been on the women are equal bandwagon for quite some time. We've just had a different perspective on what the implications are.
