the liberals are showing their own racism: "Wow, a black guy that speaks well (as long as it's with a teleprompter). He will be our new Jesus, except we don't believe in Jesus or God."

"..uh, ah, uh, ah, ummmm..." -- Obama

      Beats McCain/Quayle, opps Palin

A women doesn't have to be liberal or Democrat or a member of NOW to be a feminist. It???s doubtful that the founders of the modern feminist movement really believed that only liberal women would rise in power from their efforts. The Republicans at first only gloated at the often derisive treatment Senator Clinton received from her own party. But when the McCain camp recognized the potential power of the feminist vote it acted swiftly to tap into that power with its own form of feminism. Senator Obama's campaign had a similar opportunity before the Democratic convention but passed on naming Senator Clinton or any other Democratic woman as his vice president. That Democrats say they are for women's rights and then ignore the anger of millions of women voters may not only be another form of hypocrisy - it might also doom the Democratic ticket in November.

If McCain wins I hope Pelosi, Reed, and Dean are thrown out on their bottoms. The left wing has taken the democratic party hostage. It was moderate democrats who turned congress over in 2006. Its time to learn from our mistakes !

can't agree more - Pelosi and Dean railroaded the primaries thereby taking the power of democracy away from us.....as a lifelong Dem my head's still spinning over this.....and am gladly endorsing the Repubs ticket this time. No one takes my vote away from me.

I hope they are thrown out on their bottoms anyway. This should have been a democratic landslide

"In fact, all the cries of sexism suggested that, yet again, the Republicans had underestimated the ability of women to lead; when the governor finally took center stage, it was clear that she needed no protections or excuses."

    But... Wait...
So now the obvious skills of somebody you???ve just spent most of an article calling an inexperienced, affirmative action country bumpkin is proof that we???re all ???sexist??? for standing up for her when attacked by actual sexists?

"These are people who have inveighed against affirmative action, a version of which undoubtedly played a part in this selection."

    But...Wait...
So Governor Palin is wholly unqualified and was only selected because of affirmative action now?

What an incredibly misogynist thing to say.

"But she could certainly help move the inevitable tide of women???s rights, the tide that has floated her own boat, by demanding that she be honored with the same tough scrutiny the guys in this race get. Which was, in case these improbable born-again friends of feminism missed it, the entire point of the exercise in the first place."

    But...Wait...
So, encouraging the In-the-Tank-for-Obama Mainstream media to suggest that a candidate???s child is really the child of her daughter and that said child was actually sired by the father of said daughter....

...is "the same tough scrutiny the guys in this race get"?

Honestly - you should probably stop using words...

I do na' thenk they mean what you...thenk they mean.

Ms. Quindlen, your last sentence , "Which was, in case these improbable born-again friends of feminism missed it, the entire point of the exercise in the first place. ", says it all.....I beg permission to continue it..... and was certainly not intended for the likes of a Sarah Palin - she does not walk in lockstep with Gloria Steiman and her ilk. How dare SHE be rewarded the fruits of the TRUE feminist.
Perhaps its asking too much for you to give her a fair chance before draping her in all this baggage - oh, I forgot, she is a Republican. By the way, I'm an improbable Catholic.

The choice of Palin as VP is the antithesis of feminism...because it's based on the callow and inane position that women will vote for a female candidate regardless of who she is, what she stands for, and what her experience is.

Almost every other choice for VP had more executive or legislative experience. There were even OTHER WOMEN in the GOP who had more experience on all fronts.

So ask yourself...why was she chosen? This anti-choice, pro-gun/hunting mom who cut funding for special needs programs by 62%...

And now, for the GOP to cry "sexism" at every criticism of her personally or professionally, and for them to declare all such criticism as "irrelevant to the discourse." If we're not lucky, they'll help to set back women's advancement by decades.

You, obviously, have no idea what the decision was based upon...McCain/Palin are the only morally defensible candidates in this race. Racism, sexism, all those "-isms" exploited so successfully over the years by liberal elites are moral issues.,..they simply don't get it.

      • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 09/08/2008 2:01:58 PM

Moral??? McCain divorces a poor woman for a rich one and who knows how long they shared a bed prior to being wed. Palin knocked up daughter at 17 so she was active at 16 no birth control and then there is this from her own lips!
Palin, who opposes abortion even in case of rape or incest, was a virtual unknown outside Alaska until McCain elevated her to the national stage as his surprise choice to join him on the Republican ticket 11 days ago.
This is the MORAL high ground????? keep on trying
McCain/Quayle, opps Palin will take womens rights bachward 25 years or more!! hope Ted Bundys kids are comming!!! as rape is something you women have to live with for 18+ years!!! 15 after the rapist is relesed, cause you could not get rid of the after affect of RAPE!!! Moral my ***!!! Could you live with that night for the rest of your life, cause of an unwanted reminder, your raiseing a rapist????

I think liberal pundits ought to be more nuanced in their analysis of what's going on in the Republican Party vis a vis women - the WSJ had the most interesting article regarding the increase in working mom's in the country at large...whatever reason, probably mostly economic - women across the country are finding it increasingly necessary to work outside the home and with that comes some enlightenment about this new lifestyle. Perhaps people like Quinn who'd rather mock than empathesize with this evolving trend should take another look....and instead of being incredulous or flip...hail this as a good change for womanhood and society at large.

  • Posted By: SharlaLee @ 09/08/2008 1:38:46 PM

I became a Republican when the Democratic Party and so many within it exposed themselves to be hypocrites on virtually every subject it claimed to support, whether it was feminism or the troops or even the country. This election and particularly the last ten days have proved it beyond any doubt. With their eyes and ears closed, they failed to notice that Republicans were embracing women and minorities. Quindlen proves she was in that group.

Then to read all the lies about Palin, that have been exposed as false, reposted in the comments shows that the hypocrites only read and believe what they want to, ignoring the truth. If you want to understand what is really happening, I suggest you read Tammy Bruce in today's San Francisco Chronicle.

Until we have civil discourse on the issues, none of us will make any progress. To hear the Deans, Pelosis, and Reids of the country openly politicize EVERYTHING is shameful. To see their close-minded followers post their trash without a critical thought or bit of self-awareness is sad for our country but good for Republicans.

    • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 09/08/2008 1:59:54 PM

Excellent comment - I read the Bruce piece and it is enlightening. This election was a choice between a hero and a zero. Now, it's a choice between HEROES and zeroes. McCain/Palin all the way!!

To say that Anna Quindlen ???just doesn???t get it??? is an epic understatement. The GOP hasn???t undergone any sort of ???metamorphosis???. It is, and has been, made up of strong, free-thinking, action-taking women???and men who have the privilege of having as our friends, bosses, wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and nieces these wonderful people who happen to be women. The only thing that???s undergone a ???metamorphosis??????and almost overnight at that???is the conventional wisdom about what being a ???feminist??? truly means.
Gov. Palin has shattered that, hopefully for good. Her political ascendancy is not the ???direct result of the women???s movement???. Rather, Gov. Palin now stands at the brink of becoming the first woman to be Vice President of the United States because of the grand sum of all her actions and choices as an individual, not as a member of ???the women???s movement??? as previously defined and enforced by liberal conformists. That Gov. Palin???s political ascendancy up until Aug. 29 took place in Alaska, whose frontier culture is derided by some as male-dominated and chauvinist, makes it all the more remarkable.
Republicans have always known that ???women can do it all???. And now they???re especially proud that one of their own is proving it???to independents, Democrats, discouraged nonvoters, and Republicans alike.

A disgusting smear piece. The GOP's ideological roots are based on American conservatism not sexism. The author has trouble seeing them apart. Also she fails to realize that there are different ways to approach the ideas of feminism but this author views it as a dogmatic liberal faith (probably what it is to her). Many first feminists were quite pro-life and there are large organizations of pro-life feminists, but thats not mentioned.

I find these abortion supporters repulsive to sanctimoniously cry about Palin's refusal to believe in the "right" to kill your own child or support even more welfare programs than we already have. What mainstream feminism is interested in is strict adherence to liberal dogma, not the huge opportunity for women here. It is no surprise that NOW and this author refuse to support Palin, they are more interested in preserving their sick twisted and evil "right" to infanticide than in advancing women's rights.

  • Posted By: boredinmidwest @ 09/08/2008 12:58:13 PM

If the GOP ever considered a woman as a viable candidate then they would have picked a woman to run in the primary, not as a last half gimmick to grab women voters. Nothing has changed in the party. All they see is a chance to grab another four years. MCcain cannot even motivate his own party.

    • Posted By: gunlingbluecollarman @ 09/08/2008 1:49:51 PM

Since when do parties "pick" candidates to run in primaries? I'm sure some candidates are merely willing tools of machine politics, but most make the decision on their own to run without waiting to be picked. After all, what party machine is going to "pick" Dennis Kucinich ?

  • Posted By: musqua @ 09/08/2008 1:38:54 PM

No Anna, the hypocrisy is with the liberals who pushed feminism and are now outraged that the Republican VP candidate is the WRONG KIND of woman - conservative, fertile, and successful without help from the liberal establishment.

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/08/2008 1:49:47 PM

It is their own fault. Hillary would have made a much stronger candidate than Obama, but the disloyal elites preferred a complete unknown. Don't blame McCain or Palin for capitalizing on Obama's error in judgement

  • Posted By: willlong @ 09/08/2008 1:48:30 PM

Ms. Quinlin is perplexed that the Republicans are acting this way. This is, mainly, because the left usually argues against their straw man construction of Conservatives rather than actually trying to understand the positions and reasons for those positions of their opposition. Easier to maintain their own delusions that way.

Let'shope that they keep it up. They continue to expose their true contradictions.

  • Posted By: News and Notes @ 09/08/2008 1:48:13 PM

Comment: As a registered Democrat for 25 years, I am disgusted by complaining going on within the party. If Obama wanted the best chance of uniting the party and winning the election, Hillary would be the VP nominee. Obama didn't think he needed her. Now he and his supporters realize how much he needed her. McCain capitalized on Obama's mistake, and the left wing of the party is furious. Sorry, this is the DNC and the party elite's fault, not the Republicans or Sarah Palins. Let's acknowledge this before November, becuase this type of complaining will ensure a McCain victory.

It is SO MUCH FUN to see Sarah's selection expose all these "know-it-alls" into the two-faced egg heads they are. If she was a Democrat pick, all their criticism would be all praise. Nice to expose their real motives which were obvious to most (expect them) all along.

  • Posted By: EskimoNanaAlaska @ 09/08/2008 1:08:44 PM

Anna, do you fact check before writing articles ? I guess not. It'll be huge news to the 700,000+ citizens of Alaska that 670,000 of them simply don't exist according to your article. You compared Sarah's service to being Mayor of Poughkeepsie, N.Y which has a population of 30k. And here's a NEWSFLASH for you: there's a difference between being a Mayor -vs- Governor. I hope Alaskans cancel subscriptions to Newsweek for Anna's ridiculous article and comments about Alaska.

    • Posted By: Mark Steven Zuelke @ 09/08/2008 1:43:12 PM

I also enjoyed the comment that Alaska has the same number of electoral votes as Delaware! Plus, the complexity of governing ANY state is equal to any other, just the numbers are different. But at least there is an executive on the Republican ticket...

  • Posted By: Polgary @ 09/08/2008 12:40:18 PM

Can someone explain to me why it is so damn important for the GOP to govern my uterus? PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHY I SHOULDN'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHAT I DO WITH MY BODY???

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/08/2008 1:42:40 PM

You do, and that is not going to change if McCain is elected because he would have to get the democrats to go along with any nomination he might make.

    • Posted By: colddeadhands @ 09/08/2008 1:34:16 PM

It's not your body, it's a baby. Idiot.

  • Posted By: EskimoNanaAlaska @ 09/08/2008 12:50:27 PM

Alaska only has 30,000 citizens ?? NOT! You compared Alaska and the Governorship to being Mayor of Poughkeepsie, N.Y which has 30,000 citizens. First, Anna, do you not know the difference between being a Mayor and being a Governor ? Second, you obviously know NOTHING about Alaska...nothing about Alaska's people, population and land mass. And, you certainly know nothing about Sarah.

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 09/08/2008 1:40:17 PM

Or the business questions that plague Alaskan businesses, the struggle to protect the environment while tapping into oil, the limits on offshore fishing and how private business and the tourist trade must work together to protect the salmon. etc.; the impact of fuel costs on tourism and small businesses out in the boonies like the Sheep Mountain Lodge, which depended on people traveling long distances just to eat their delicious desserts (love that apple thingy they make), and on the cost to deliver basic goods to the stores. We have heard all about how prices have gone up in Hawaii, but I'd bet that Alaska is having even bigger problems with it.

You want someone who knows how these things are affecting everyday people, you could not have asked for a better person on McCain's team than Sarah Palin.

  • Posted By: aniski @ 09/08/2008 12:31:05 PM

What annoys me most is that the GOP actually believes that women should and will vote for Palin just because she is a woman. I find it demeaning to the women who vote based on the politics of a person rather than their gender. Women are more than capable of knowing about issues and voting on them to their benefit, thank you very much!

    • Posted By: colddeadhands @ 09/08/2008 1:39:25 PM

The only people I have heard say that are liberal pundits on TV. I think most would vote for her based on her charisma, accomplishments and deep conservative values - as they would for any man in the race.
